ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)

kalai (p. 96) s. A digit or one-sixteenth of the moon's diameter, a phasis, சந்திரன்பங்கு. 2. A minute portion of time equal to thirty காட்டை, or about eight seconds,காலநுட்பம். 3. The arts and sciences, being sixty four, viz.: 1. அக்கரவிலக்கணம், the knowledge of spelling and reading, orthography, the science of reading. 2. இலி கிதம், caligraphy, penmanship. 3. கணி தம், the art of computation, arithmetic, the science of numbers. 4. வேதம், the Hindu Veda or law. 5. புராணம், a class of sacred books comprising the whole body of Hindu theology. 6. வியாகரணம், grammar. 7. நீதிசாத்திரம், jurisprudence. 8. சோதிடசாத்திரம், astronomy, including astroloy. 9. தருமசாத்திரம், ethics, moral philosophy, code of laws. 1. யோகசாத் திரம், the knowledge of abstract or silent devotion, rules for religious and abstract meditations. 11. மந்திரசாத்திரம், A division of the Vedas in the first practical part; it includes prayers and hymns addressed to particular deities and used at particular sacrifices, and it also comprehends incantations in religion. magic, medicine, and every other art or practice in which enchantments are used. 12. சகுணசாத்திரம், the science of prognosticating by omens and augury. 13. சிற்ப சாத்திரம், architecture and mechanics, symmetry, shapes in general including sculpture, painting features, lines, hair, &c., of the human system, and their various effects on life. 14.வைத்தியசாத்திரம், science of healing, physic, pharmacy and surgery which may include restoration to life of the dead, the reunion of severed limbs. &c. 15. உருவசாத்திரம், physiognomy, the art of discovering the temper and foreknowing the fortune by the features of the face, metoposcopy, chiromancy, the art of foretelling the events of life by inspecting the hand, சாமுத்திரிகம். 16. இதிகாசம், history, traditional accounts of former events, heroic history--as found in the Bharata and Ramayana. 17. காவியம், epic poetry --as சிந்தாமணி, நைடதம், &c. 18. அலங்காரம், science of rhetoric. 19. மதுரபாடணம், eloquence. 2. நாடகம், dramatic science. 21. நிருத்தம், the art of dancing. 22. சத்தப் பிரமம், directions for the modulation of sounds. 23. வீணை, the art of playing on the lute or stringed instruments. 24. வேணு. the art of playing on the flute or pipe. 25. மிருதங்கம், the art of beating the tambourine. 26. தாளம், the art of beating the cymbals. 27. அத்திரபரிட்சை, archery, the art of throwing darts. 28. கனகபரிட்சை, the art of an assayer in gold, &c. 29. இரதபரிட்சை, the art of driving chariots, charioteering. 3. கசபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of an elephant. 31. அசுவபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of a horse. 32. இரத் தினபரிட்சை, the art of examining and choosing gems, knowledge of precious stones. 33. பூமிபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the different kinds of soil, rules for determining by the surface, the nature and depth of soils, underneath which water is to be found, &c. 34. சங்கிராமவி லக்கணம், military art, tactics. 35. மல்ல யுத்தம், wrestling, pugilism, gymnastics, athletic art, boxing. 36. ஆகருடணம், the art of calling or summoning by enchantment. 37. உச்சாடணம், exorcism, dislodging devils or exciting them to injure others. 38. வித்துவேடணம், exciting hatred between parties by magical spells-one of the eight performances of enchantment. 39. மதனசாத்திரம், erotics, modus coeundi. 4. மோகனம், libidinous fascinations occasioned by enchantment. 41. வசீகரணம், the art of subduction by magic, the art of bringing one over to another's side or interest by enchant ment. 42. இரசவாதம், alchymy and chemistry. 43. காந்தருவவாதம் the knowledge of the condition of the celestial choristers. 44. பைபீலவாதம், the language of brute creatures from emmets upwards. 45. கவுத்துகவாதம், the art of restoring pleasure to a sorrowful mind. 46. தாதுவாதம், the knowledge of the pulse. 47. காரூடம். charms, incantations against poison. 48. நட்டம், information respecting any thing lost obtained by astronomical calculations. 49. முட்டி, information respecting any thing concealed in the palms of the hand (lit. in the fist.) 5. ஆகாயப்பிரவேசம், the art of entering into the air and becoming invisible. 51. ஆகாயமனம், the art of walking in the air. 52. பரகாயப்பிரவேசம், the power of leaving one's own body and entering another lifeless body or substance at pleasure. 53. அதிரிசயம், the power of making one's self invisible. 54. இந்திரசாலம், the art of conjuring, juggling, &c. 55. மகேந்திர சாலம், the art of performing wonders in heaven and earth. 56. அக்கினித்தம்பம், restraining the action of fire. 57. சலத் தம்பம், The art of counteracting the yielding quality of water so as to be able to walk on its surface. 58. வாயுத்தம்பம், the art of restraining the power of the wind. 59. திட்டித்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the eyes. 6. வாக்குத்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the mouth. 61. சுக்கிலத் தம்பம், the art of restraining the semen virile. 62. கனனத்தம்பம், the art of preventing the discovery of things concealed. 63. கட்கத்தம்பம், the art by which the power of sword or any other weapon is nullified. 64. அவத்தைப்பிர யோகம், the power of stationing the soul at pleasure, in any of the five stages in full energy by virtue of abstract devotion for converse with the deity. See அவத்தை. கலைநாதன், s. Argha, a divinity of the Jainas. கலைநாயகன், s. Budha, புத்தன். (திவாக.) கலைமகள்--கலைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati--as the patroness of the arts, சரச்சுவதி. (p.) கலைமலைவு, s. காரணம்
kārṇm (p. 104) s. Cause, origin, source, தோற்றத்துக்கு மூலம். 2. Principle, essential element, மூலம். 3. Instrument or means, கருவி. 4. [in logic.] Cause, reason, the ground of an assertion or argument, ஏது. occasion, நோக்கம். Wils. p. 213. KARANA. 6. One of the twenty-eight Agamas, ஆகமம் இருபத்தெட்டிலொன்று. According to the Hindu Philosophy, காரணம் is three fold, viz.: முத ற்காரணம், துணைக்காரணம், நிமித்தகாரணம், முத ற்காரணம், material, proximate cause--as clay from which pottery is made, or the primitive Maya out of which the universe was produced. துணைக்காரணம், secondary, instrumental, or co-efficient cause--as the wheel used by a potter, or the Sakti (energy) of the god Siva. நிமித்தகாரணம், the efficient cause or the agent--as the potter, in the manufacture of wares, or the god Siva in the production of worlds. சர்வத்துக்குமாதிகாரணமானவர். The first cause or creator of all things. காரணகர்த்தா--காரணகடவுள் s. The Supreme Being--the Chief Agent in all things, முதற்கடவுள். 2. Any supposed miracle-working deity, அற்புத கடவுள். காரணகாட்சி, s. Demonstration 'a priori', or from an axiom. Rott. 2. A pleasing and marvellous sight. காரணகாரியம், s. Cause and effect, காரமுங்காரியமும். காரணகுரு, s. A guru whose sole object is the spiritual benefit of his disciples, மெய்க்குரு--opposed to கரியகுரு. காரணக்குறி, s. [in gram.] Derived names or appellatives, as one of the classes of nouns--opposed to இடுகுறி,கார ணப்பெயர். 2. Presage, omen, prognostic, a sign showing beforehand what is to happen, முன்னறிகுறி. காரணங்காட்ட, inf. To affirm a cause, to ascribe or show reasons, ஏதுகாட்ட. காரணகேவலம், s. Absolute unconsciousness of the soul during its involution in காரணமாயை. It is one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசகலம், s. Conscious state of the soul during its manifestation in the world, and consequent subjection to births and deaths; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசரீரம், s. The most subtile embryo of the body, as originally and eternally existing with the soul. (See சரீரத்திரயம்.) In the Vedantic philosophy, the original principle of spiritual ignorance, in which the soul is enveloped during the period of its non-absorption in Brahm. காரணசுத்தம், s. Complete liberation from பாசம், and the attainment of perfect purity and happiness; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names limited in their application--as முடி, a crown so called because it is put on முடி, the head, ஒன் றற்குரியகாரணப்்பெயர். காரணச்சொல், s. A story, a narrative, கதை. (p.) 2. A derived word. காரணப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derivative names. காரணப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names extending to various classes--as அணி, jewel; so called because it embraces various kinds of jewels, which are worn, பலவற்றிற்குரியகார ணப்பெயர். காரணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be the author of the thing. காரணமாயை, s. Maya as the primitive, original substance from which all the manifestations of matter and spirit are evolved, and into which they are again resolved at the destruction of the universe, அகிலத்துக்கும் வித்தானமாயை. see மாயை. காரணமுகாந்திரம், s. Motive. காரணவணு, s. According to some atheistical schools, primitive or original atoms, by the fortuitous combination of which, the worlds were originated. காரணவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the cause is, by the way of metonymy, used for the effect--as in திருவாசகம். காரணவிசேஷம், s. Chief or principal things. (p.) காரணவிடுகுறி, s. A name which, though given originally as descriptive of a class of objects, is applied to individuals of the class, though destitute of the qualities which it describes--as மறவன், கறங்கு. காரணவிலக்கணை, s. [in rhetoric.] Metonymy of a cause for the effect. காரணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Negation of effects from the absence of a cause, ஓரலங்காரம். காரணன், s. The first cause, நிமித்தன். 2. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 3. Any deity supposed to work miracles, அற் புதகடவுள். 4. A king, அரசன். 5. The name of a kind of arsenic, மிரதபாஷாணம். காரணாவத்தை--காரணாவஸ்தை, s. The three principal, causative states or அவத் தை of the soul--கேவலம், சகலம் and சுத்தம், --as distinguished from காரியாவத்தை. காரணானுமானம், s. [in logic.] A priori reasoning; inference from cause to effect --opposed to காரியானுமானம். (சிவ. சி.) மூலகாரணம், s. The primeval cause. மொழிமுதற்காரணம், s. The first principle of a word. காரணி, s. kāriym (p. 104) s. Affair, thing, business, concern, matter, subject, occurrence, circumstance, incident, topic, event, transaction, கருமம். 2. An action, operation, a deed, process, செய்கை. 3. Object, purpose, design, விஷயம். 4. Effect, result, product, issue,--as apposed to காரணம், பயன். Wils. p. 215. KARYYA. 5. Expediency, fitness, profitableness, இலாபம். காரியகருமமில்லாதவன். One not concerned about any thing, not troubled with business. அதுனக்குக்காரியமல்ல, நீயேன்பேசுகிறாய். You have nothing to so with it, why do you speak? அதுகாரியமல்ல, இதுவே உனக்குக் காரியம். That is not expedient, but this will be profitable for you. காரணகாரியத்தைக்காட்டுகிறது. The effect shows or implies the cause. காரியகேவலம், s. Transient unconsciousness of the living soul during its station in any of the five அவஸ்தை. காரியசகலம், s. Imperfect knowledge of the living soul during its station in any of the five அவஸ்தை. காரியசுத்தம், s. Clear and distinct perception of the living soul during its station in any of the five அவஸ்தை. காரியகர்த்தா, s. A maker, an accomplisher--as in educing, sustaining and destroying worlds, &c. 2. An agent, a superintendent. காரியகாரன், s. An agent, a commissioner, காரியம்பார்க்கிறவன். 2. An attorney, an advocate, காரியதுரந்தரன். 3. A man of business, one clever in business, வேலை யிலே சாதுரியன். காரியகுரு, s. A guru who seeks his own interest, whose living is his chief object-opposed to காரணகுரு. காரியக்கெட்டி, s. A man successful in his undertakings, adopting proper means; a business-like man. காரியசாதகம், s. Perseverance in an undertaking, காரியத்தில்முயலுகை. 2. Accomplishing an object, காரியசித்தி. Success in an undertaking, accomplishment, காரியங்கைகூடுகை. காரியதரிசி, s. Secretary, superintendent, manager, காரியத்தலைவன். காரியத்தலைவன், s. A superintendent, a manager. காரியந்துரந்தரன்--காரியஸ்தன், s. A competent manager, superintendent, agent, one who conducts business, காரியத் தில்வல்லவன். காரியத்தடை, s. An impediment or obstacle to business, கருமவிடையூறு. காரியத்தவறு, s. Failure in a business, வேலைத்தவறு. 2. Ill success, கைகூடாமை. காரியத்தாழ்ச்சி, s. Ill success, கைகூ டாமை. 2. Loss; காரியநஷ்டம். காரியத்தாழ்ச்சிவராமற்பார்க்க, inf. To see that there be no failure of success. காரியத்துக்குத்தக்கதாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak as the nature of a thing requires. காரியத்துக்குவர, inf. To answer the purpose; to be expedient, profitable; to be prosperous. காரியநிருவாகி, s. A manager, a superintendent, an advocate. காரியபாகம், s. Good management, frugality, economy, judicious or prudent direction. காரியபேதம், s. Disappointment in an affair, காரியம்வேறுபடுகை. காரியப்பட, inf. To be effected; to be produced, wrought or operated on, காரிய முண்டாக. 2. To succeed, to avail, கைகூட. காரியப்படுத்த, inf. To effect, to accomplish, காரியமுடிக்க. 2. To transact, to manage, காரியநடத்த. காரியப்பாடு, v. noun. Effect, result, production. காரியப்பிழை, Failure in an undertaking, காரியவழு. 2. Ill success, கைகூடாமை. காரியப்பொறுப்பு, Responsibility. காரியாகாரியம், s. What is and what is not to matter. 2. Circumstances, affairs. காரியமாயிருக்க, inf. To be busy; to be useful. காரியமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak of a thing as important. காரியமாய்ப்போக, inf. To go on an errand. காரியமானபேச்சு, s. Important conversation; a speech well adapted to the occasion. காரியமுடிக்க, s. To accomplish, to execute. காரியமுடிப்பு, s. The sum and substance of a business, an affair, &c. காரியமுடிய, inf. to be accomplished --as an object; to terminate--as one's life, &c. காரியம்பலிக்க, inf. To succeed, காரி யஞ்சித்திக்க. காரியம்பார்க்க, inf. To do a business, to manage a business. காரியம்பெற, inf. To attain one's object. காரியம்பேதிக்க, inf. To change or alter--as an affair. 2. To be thwarted. காரியவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the effect is by metonymy, used for the cause, as in அலங்காரம். காரியவிசாரணை, s. Superintendence, supervision. காரியவிரோதம், s. Opposition in an undertaking, rivalry. காரியவிலக்கணை, s. [in rhetoric.] Metonymy of an effect for the cause. காரியவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] The negation of a thing or event by the nonexistence of the effect, &c., or by the presence of contrary effects, ஓரலங்காரம். காரியாவத்தை--காரியாவஸ்தை, s. Subordinate, minor states or அவத்தை of the living soul, being five in காரியகேவலம், five in காரியசகலம். and five in காரியசுத்தம், and thus constituting fifteen காரியாவத்்தை. (சிவப்.) காரியானுமானம், s. [in logic.] A posteriori reasoning; inference from effect to cause--opposed to காரணானுமானம். (சிவ. சி.) காரிரத்தம்--காருன்னி s. A plant, ஆடு தின்னாப்பாலை. Aristolochia, L. 125) *

kiriyai (p. 110) s. Act, action, deed, operation, performance, emphatically good manners, orderliness, cleanliness, செய்கை 2. Religious rites or duties as prescribed by the Shastras, சமயநிஷ்டை. 3. The second degree in the religion of Siva-entitling the disciple to the privilege of performing puja, &c. (See பாதம்.) 4. Works, rites, &c., in religion--as distinguished from abstract or silent devotion, in which these rites and dispensed with. (See சிவபூ சை.) 5. Funeral rites for a deceased ancestor, உத்தரகிரியை. 6. One of ten rules for keeping time in music, தாளப்பிரமாணத்தி னொன்று. (See தாளப்பிரமாணம்.) 7. [in grammar.] The verb or attribute. (See அன்னுவய விலக்கணம்.) Wils. p. 257. KRIYA.--Note. In Sanscrit compounds the word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation, கிரியா. கிரியாகாண்டம், s. Those parts of the Vedas which inculcate works, rites, and ceremonies, கருமகாண்டம்--opposed to ஞா னகாண்டம். கிரியாங்கம், s. Worship, rites and ceremonies, chiefly applicable to prescribed individual practice--as preparing the sacred ashes, repeating the incantations, touching the joints of the fingers while repeating them, &c., கிரியையுறுப்பு. கிரியாங்கம்பண்ண, inf. To perform the several external actions in the daily worship. கிரியாசத்தி, s. lit. The operative energy or power. [in the agama philosophy.] One of the three active or female energies of Siva, by which he effects the creation or evolution of the universe. 2. the faculty or power of action, operation, &c., as applied to any agent. (சிவ. சி.) கிரியாசாதனம், s. Being trained or inured to the performance of works, religious duties, &c., கிரியையனுட்டிப்பு. கிரியாசைவம், s. One of the sixteen divisions of the Siva system. See சைவம். கிரியாசொரூபன், s. One who is the embodiment, கிரியை; (appropriately) Ganesa, who is considered the impersonation of Siva's divine operations. கிரியாதீதன், s.கிரியையொழிந்தவன். கிரியாபதம், s. [in Sanscrit grammar.] A verb, வினைச்சொல். கிரியாபாதம், s. The second of the four stages or degrees in the Siva worship; [ex கிரியை, et பாதம்.] கிரியாபூசை, s. The worship offered to Siva by one in the second degree. (p.) கிரியாமார்க்கம், s. The practice of duties in the second degree of the Siva religion; the performance of rites and ceremonies, கிரியைநெறி. கிரியாமாலை, s. Inflection or conjugation of verbs, chiefly in Sanscrit, வினைச் சொல்லின்ரூபகரணம். கிரியாவதி, s. A person who practices the rites and ceremonies enjoined in the Vedas. கிரியாவுத்திரி, s. Transcendental and symbolical instruction in the most spiritual rites, by a guru to an advanced disciple--opposed to ஞானாவுத்திரி. (சிவ. சி.) கிரியைகெட்டது, appel. noun. Any thing disorderly, slovenly, ஒழுங்கற்றது. கிரியைகெட்டவன், s. One destitute of good manners, slovenly in dress, or irregular in habits. கிரியைக்காரன், s. One in the second degree of the Siva religion. கிரியைக்கேடு, s. slovenliness, debauchery, beastliness, ஒழுங்கின்மை. கிரியைசெய்ய, inf. To perform actions, duties, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 2. To perform funeral rites, உத்திரகிரியைசெய்ய. கிரியையனுட்டிக்க, inf. To perform rites, and ceremonies. 2. To practice the daily rites, to perform the duties of the second degree. கிரியையொழிந்தவன், s. One who has dispensed with works, having attained a higher degree, கிரியாபாதங்கடந்தவன். காட்டுக்கிரியை, s. Obsequies, funeral rites in the place of burning or burial --as distinguished from வீட்டுக்கிரியை. 2) *
