aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. The word which makes sense with the preceding word, or words; being often the concluding one, பயனிலை. பொருண்மை, s. Meaning, purport, or matter of a treatise, as பொருள். (p.) பொருளகராதி, s. A dictionary of synonymous words. See சதுரகராதி. பொருளதிகாரம், s. That part of ethics, which treats on the four themes or subjects embracing all kinds of knowledge and practice. See நாற்பொருள். பொருளாசை, s. Covetousness, avarice. பொருளிலக்கணம், s. Properties of things. This in grammar embraces: 1. அகப்பொருள், rules for amatory verses, see அகப்பாட்டுறுப்பு; 2. புறப்பொருள், rules for war-chants; which see. பொருளுதவி, s. A pecuniary aid. பொருள்கோள், s. Modes of constructing verse of which eight are given; 1. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், natural, as the nominative accompanied by its various attributes, adjuncts, &c., followed by its object, if any, and concluded by the verb; 2. மொழிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், construction, in which the nominative and verb are interchanged, with another nominative and verb; 3. நிரனிறைப்பொருள் கோள், when subjects, and attributes, or nominatives and their verbs, are given in distinct series, see நிரனிறை; 4. விற் பூண் or விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், when the nominative is at the beginning, and its verb at the end, or the contrary; 5. தரப்பிசைப்பொருள்கோள், when a noun or verb belongs alike to the preceding and following parts of a verse or sentence, see தாப்பிசை; 6. அளைமறிபாப்புப்பொ ருள்கோள், another kind of construction, see அளை; 7. கொண்டுகூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், a construction which requires the words to be selected here and there; 8. அடிமறி மாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், a verse in which the lines of the stanza are interchangeable, see அடிமறிமாற்று. பொருள்விளங்கவைத்தல், v. noun.
