aṉl (p. 33) s. Heat as of fever, warmth, a glow, உட்டணம். 2. (p.) Fire, தீ. 3. One of the twelve afflictions which a living body suffers, உயிர்வேதனையினொன்று. அனலசனபட்சி, s. A bird said to devour burning coals, &c., the ostrich, தழல்விழுங்கி. (p.) அனலி, s. The sun, சூரியன். (p.) அனலேறு, s. [ex ஏறு, entering.] The thunderbolt. (p.) அனலோடுவேந்தன், s. aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

aviẕ (p. 31) s. A single grain of boiled rice, ஓர்சோறு. (c.) வடித்தபானையிலோரவிழுங்கிடையாது. A single grain of rice will not be found in a well cleaned vessel. கலவுமிதின்றாலோரவிழ்தட்டாதா? If you eat twelve marcals of husks, will not one grain of rice touch (your teeth?) i. e. if you take much trouble, will you not derive some benefit? 11)

aviẕ (p. 31) --அவிழு, கிறது, அவிழ்ந்தது, அவிழும், அவிழ, v. n. To become loose, untied, unfastened as a knot, &c., கட்டவிழ. 2. (p.) To open, expand, &c., as a flower, மலர. முகையவிழ்கோதை. A garland of opening buds. கள்ளவிழ்சோலை. The honey-distilling flower-groves. 12)

aviẕ (p. 31) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To loosen, slacken, untie, unbind, unpack, unfasten, unsew, முடியவிழ்க்க. 2. To cause to open, as the sun opens flowers. Humming insects are also described by poets as opening the flowers. மலரச்செய்ய. 3. To solve an enigma, unriddle, explain a difficulty, விடுகதைவிடுவிக்க. அவன்காலால்முடிந்ததைக் கையாலவிழ்க்கக்கூடாது. What he has bound with his foot, none can unbind with their hands; i. e. he is a crafty man whose schemes no body, though ever so skilful, can defeat. 13) *

avukkvukkeṉl (p. 31) v. noun. Sounding as hawking, vomiting, &c., severely and in quick succession, ஒலிக்குறிப்பு. 2. Being eager, hasty, earnest, விரைதல். (c.) அவுக்கவுக்கென்றுதின்கிறான். He eats greedily, hastily, &c. அவு்ககவுக்கென்றுவாந்திக்கிறான். He is vomiting greatly. நாய் அவுக்கவுக்கென்று விழுகிறது. The dog attacks (us) barking eagerly. அவுக்கவுக்கென்று வேலைசெய்கிறான். He works with great diligence, or with eagerness, for his pay. அவுக்கவுக்கென்றோடுகிறான், He runs about his business with great eagerness. 15)

ā (p. 34) . The second vowel of the alphabet, இரண்டாமுயிரெழுத்து. 2. A contraction of the infinitive ஆக, to become--as பெண் ணாப்பிறந்தவள், one become (born) a woman. 3. s. A neat, a cow or bull, பசுப்பொது. 4. A cow, பெண்பசு. 5. A she buffalo, பெண் ணெருமை. 6. A she elk, gayal, பெண்ம ரை. 7. An interjection of pity, regret, pain, desire, contempt, admiration, இரக்கச் சொல். 8. A particle expressive of eager desire, gaping for a thing--as, ஆவென்றுதிரிகி றான், he wanders in quest of what he can get. (See ஆவெனல்.) 9. An affix of interrogation, வினா--as விழித்தானா? is he awake? 1. The termination of the neg. neut. plural of verbs, எதிர்மறை யஃறிணைப் பன்மைவி குதி--as, அவைசெல்லா, they will not go. 11. A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)
