To set a stone on the forehead as a punishment, the head being bent backward, and the face set toward the sun, நெற்றியிற் கல்லுவைக்க. 4. To crect a stone at a funeral ceremony (a சாச்சடங்கு, personifying a deceased ancestor, whose spirit is supposed to enter and remain in it while the ceremonies are performed. A deification of the soul is supposed to take place and the stone is made an object of worship, சிலைதாபிக்க. கல்லுவைத்துப்பார்க்க, inf. The distance of a stone's throw, கல்லெறிதூரம். 3. A sling, கவண். கல்லெறிய, inf. To throw or fling a stone, to pelt with stones. கல்லெறிதூரம், s. The distance of a stone's throw. கல்லைநீராக்கி, s. A kind of ore, மாமிசபேதி. கல்லொட்டி, s. A snail, நத்தை, (M. Dic.) கல்வீடு, s. A stone of brick-built house. கல்வெட்டி, s. A stone-cutter, a lapidary. கல்வெட்டுபவன். கல்வெட்டு, s. A stone cutting, engraving in stones, சிலாசாதனம். 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. koṭumai (p. 146) s. Cruelty, tyranny, oppression, violence inhumanity, கொடுங்கோன் மை. 2. Severity, harshness, vehemence, impetuosity, barbarousness, குரூரம். 3. Vileness, turpitude, wickedness, baseness, flagrance, flagitiousness, தீமை. 6. Injustice, அநீதி. 7. Sharpness, poignancy, severity, கூர்மை. 8. adj. Satirical, offensive, injurious, கடுமை.--Note. In most of its meanings, bad or injurious qualities are implied. It differs from கடு மை, in Several meanings. Like that and similar abstract nouns, it drops the termination and combines with other nouns as an adjective, according to rule. வறுமைகொடிது. Poverty is cruel. வயிற்றுக்கொடுமையினால்வருந்துகிறான். He is vexed by want of food. கொடிது--கொடியது, appel. noun. That which is cruel, கொடுமையானது. கொடியகாடு, s. A wild, inhospitable desert. கொடியகூற்றன், s. The cruel Yama. கொடியசண்டாளர், s. A desperate fraud; a base imposition. கொடியவன், s. A vile wretch, a hardhearted cruel man. கொடியவீரன், s. A kind of prepared arsenic, கோடாசொரிபாஷாணம். (Rott.) கொடியவெப்பம், s. Oppressive, vehement heat of weather or climate, &c. 2. Poignant qualities of medicines. கொடியோன், s. A cruel man. 2. The plant, கற்றாழை, Aloes. கொடுங்கண், s. [fem. பல்லி.] A man with long or large teeth. பல்லிடுக்கு, s. Partings between the teeth, in reference to food sticking in them. பல்லுகட்ட--பற்கட்ட, inf. To fasten teeth [with gold] 2. To make and place [artificial] teeth. பல்லுகிட்டல்--பற்கிட்டல், v. noun. Chattering of the teeth from cold. 2 Closing together the jaws in convulsions; (lit.) approaching together of the teeth. பல்லுக்காட்ட--பல்லைக்காட்ட--பற்கா ட்ட, inf. பால்
pāl (p. 313) s. Milk, பசுவின் பால்முதலியன. 2. Milky juice in plants, trees and fruits--as the eocoa-nut, மரமுதலியவற்றின்பால். 3. Lymph, matter, fluid in pustules, &c., அம்மைப்பால். 4. (சது.) Whiteness, வெண்மை. [a contraction of Sa. Palana, milk of a cow recently calved.]--Note. In combination the final ல் is changed by rule to ற், sometimes to ன், பாலுக்குங்காவல்பூனைக்குந்தோழன். A guard to the milk, but a friend to the cat. பாலும்வெள்ளைமோரும்வெள்ளை. Milk is white, whey is white--spoken of persons or things apparently similar, but really very different. பால்வார்த்துமுழுகுவான். He will bathe, putting milk on his head (in token of his joy at your death, &c.). பாலடை, s. A shell for a milk-ladle, பாலடைச்சங்கு. [loc.] 2. A shrub, பால டைச்செடி, Hallia sororia. பாலடைய, inf.
