அக்கினி
akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

ஆயுருவேதம்
āyuruvētam (p. 40) --ஆயுள்வேதம், s. One of the four உபவேதம், that which teaches medicine, உபவேதத்திலொன்று. 2. The medical art, pharmacy, வைத்தியம். Wils. p. 118. AYURVEDA. (p.) ஆயுருவேதாக்கினி, s. A kind of fire used in preparing medicines, which consists of three kinds; viz.: 1. தீபாக்கி னி, flame of a lamp. 2. கமலாக்கினி, fire glowing as the lotus flower. 3. காடாக் கினி, immoderate fire. (p.) ஆயுள்வேதியர், s. Physicians, doctors, medical practitioners, வைத்தியர். (p.) 8) *
காருகபத்தியம்
kārukapattiyam (p. 104) s. One of the three sacred fires--that which is maintained by the householder as received from his father and transmitted to his descendants or successors, from which fire is taken for sacrificial purposes, வேதாக்கினிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீ. Wils. p. 288. GARHAPATYA. 126) *
தட்சணம்
taṭcaṇam (p. 222) --தக்ஷிணம், s. South, southward, தெற்கு. 2. Right, right hand. வலப்பக்கம். (Sa. Dakshin'a.) (See தக்கணம்.) 3. The same moment. See க்ஷணம். தட்சணகௌளி, s. A lizard to the south of one, the chirping of which is auspicious. தட்சணாக்கினி-தக்கணாக்கினி, s. The fire kindled by the brahmans in the sacrifice towards the south; called also வேதாக்கினி. தட்சணாஸ்தம், s. (St.) The right side; [ex அஸ்தம்.] தட்சணாமூர்த்தம், s. The posture of Siva teaching the four sons of Brahma, seated with his face to the south, under the shade of a banyan, குருமூர்த்தம். தட்சணாமூர்த்தி, s. A name of Siva, சிவன். 2. Agastya, as dwelling in mount Pothiyam at the south, அகஸ்தி யன். (சித்தர்பாடல்.) தட்சணாயனாந்தம், s. The southern solstice. 25) *

tī (p. 242) s. Fire, நெருப்பு. 2. Elementary principle of fire and heat, caloric, பஞ்ச பூதத்தொன்று. 3. Hell, நரகம். (சது.) 4. As தீக்கணம்--Note. A three-fold class of elementary fire is given in சதுரகராதி. 1. உயிரி லுள்ளதீ. principle of fire in the sentient soul, and animal body, being a source of warmth, and energy or principle of fire in the stomach, assisting digestion, causing appetite and hunger. It is seated in the peritoneum, 3. சினத்திலெழுந்தீ, fiery principle developing itself in anger. Instead of the first, other authorities give காமத்தீ, the heat or fire of venereal appetite.-Note 2. A three-fold class of sacred fire, வேதாக்கினி, is also given. 1. காருகபத்தியம், the sacrificial fire of the Brahmanical houesholder, received from his ancestors. and kept alive. 2. தட்சிணாக்கினியம், a fire kindles from the standing fire on the southern side of the house, &c. 3. ஆக வனீயம், consecrated fire, taken from the standing fire, for sacrificial purposes. தீக்கஞ்சி, s. A kind of camphor. See தீபக்கொடிச்சி. தீக்கடன், s. (sometimes தீக்கருமம்.) The duties of the son of heir to one deceased, such as cremation and other funeral rites performed with fire. தீக்கடைகோல், s. Sticks for producing fire by friction. See கடைகோல். தீக்கதிக்கும்பச்சை, s. A precious stone, as நாகப்பச்சை. தீக்கதிர், s. A smith's poker, உலையா ணிக்கோல். (R.) தீக்கரண்டி, s. A little cup or bowl for taking up fire, தீயெடுக்குங்கருவி. தீக்கல், s. Flint, தீத்தட்டிக்கல். தீக்காய, inf. (com. குளிர்காய.) To warm one's self at the fire. தீக்குடுக்கை, s. See குடுக்கை. தீக்குதிக்க, inf. To leap into a pit of fire for self-destruction, as தீக்குளிக்க. தீக்குருவி, s. The Ostrich. See தழல் விழுங்கி. தீக்குவெறுங்குகை, s. Soap, சவுக்காரம். (R.) தீக்குழி, s. A pit with coals of fire on which persons walk. தீக்குழிபாய, inf. As தீக்குளிக்க. 2. To pass through burning coals, as a ceremony. தீக்குளிக்க, inf. To plunge into fire, for self-destruction. See குளி, v. தீக்கூர்மை, s. Rock-salt, இந்துப்பு. 2. Salt extracted from sesamum, as திலாசாரம். (R.) திக்கையோன், s. Siva, as holding fire in his hand. 2. See தீக்கை. தீக்கொளுத்த, inf. To kinde a fire &c., to set fire to any thing. தீ தீச்சட்டி, s. A vessel of coals, for warming one's self, or heating any thing; a chafing dish, கும்பிடுசட்டி. 2. A vessel for fire carried on one's head in performance of a vow. தீத்தட்டிக்கல், s. [prov.] (sometimes தீத்தட்டி.) A flint. தீத்தாங்கி, appel. n.. A fire-fender, தீம றைக்கும்பலகை. தீத்திரள், s. The deluge of fire, வடவா முகாக்கினி. தீத்தீண்டல், v. noun. s. A marriage ceremony, ஒருசடங்கு. தீத்தெய்வம், s. The god of fire. தீநா, s. [in seamen's language.] A lighted torch, held up in a vessel, or on shore, as a signal, அடையாளப்பந்தம். தீப்பறக்க, inf. To flash as fire, to be red hot. (c.) தீப்பற்ற, inf. To kindle, as fire. தீப்பொறி, s. A spark of fire. தீப்போட, inf. To set fire to any thing. தீமுறுகல், s. A kind of prepared arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். தீயிறைக்க, inf. To belch fire. 2. To persecute with wrath. தீயெச்சம், s. See எச்சம். தீவட்டி--தீவத்தி, s. [prop. தீவர்த்தி.] A torch, a flambeau. (c.) தீவட்டிக்காரன், s. Torch-bearer. தீவட்டிக்கொள்ளை, s. Plundering one's house, as robbers with torches. தீவட்டிபிடிக்க, inf. To carry a torch. தீவலஞ்செய்தல், v. noun. Worshipping fire, as in the marriage ceremonies, by passing around it to the right, அக் கினிப்பிரதட்சணஞ்செய்தல். தீவளர்க்க, inf. To kindle or argument a fire, more especially the sacred fire as one of the duties of the Brahmanical house-holder, or a fire for a widow to plunge into. தீவளர்ப்போர், appel. n. Brahmans. தீவறை, s. [prov.] A hole dug in the ground for a fire, குழியடுப்பு. தீவிழ, inf. To be consumed by fire, as form heaven; used in cursing, or lively description. தீவிளங்கும்வயிரம், s. Ambergris, மீன ம்பர். (R.) தீவேட்க, inf. To perform a sacrifice. யாகஞ்செய்ய. 2. To marry a wife, கலியா ணஞ்செய்ய; [ex வேட்க, to sacrifice, &c.] தீவேள்வி, s. A wedding, கலியாணம். (சது.) தீக்காலி, s. A hag, a mischievous woman. See துடைகாலி. 3)
வேதம்
vētam (p. 402) s. The holy books of the Hindus--said to have been revealed by Brahma, but compiled from tradition by vyasa. They are four in number; 1. இருக்கு, Rig Veda, chiefly relating to ritual worship; 2. எசுர், Yajur Veda, concerning the ceremonies observed in sacrifices; 3. சாமம், Sama Veda, containing odes, hymns and chants; 4. அதர்வ ணம், Atharvan'a, with mantras or magical formulas, the least esteemed of the four. உபவேதம், s. The four secondary sciences. These are அருத்தவேதம், commentary on the Vedas; ஆயுர்வேதம், Physic; காந்தருவவேதம், music; தனுர்வேதம், archery. வேதகலாபம், s. Religious persecution. வேதக்காரர், s. Brahmans skilled in one or more of the Vedas. (R.) 2. [Heathen usage.] Roman Catholics. வேதக்கொடியோன், s. An epithet of Dron'acharya as the Veda-bannered, துரோணாசாரியன். (சது.) வேதசாஸ்திரம், s. The four Vedas and six Shastras collectively. 2. [corrup. usage.] Theology. வேதசாஸ்திரி, s. One learned in the Vedas and Shastras. 2. [not authorized.] A theologian. வேதசாட்சி, s. [R, C, usage,] A martyr. வேதசாரம், s. [lit. the essence of religion.] The title of a book. 2. A reed, நாணற்புல். வேதநாயகன், s. The Deity as lord of the Vedas, பிரமன், கடவுள். வேதநூல், s. A religious system. வேதபாரகர், s. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 2. Those who are well versed in the Vedas, See பாரகர். 3. [Chris. usage.] Scribes, expounders of the Jewish law. வேதபாராயணம், s. Study of the Vedas. வேதபுஸ்தகம், s. [Christ. usage.] The Bible. வேதப்புரட்டு, v. noun. Perversion of the Vedas. 2. [in Christ. usage.] Corruption of the true religion, heresy. வேதமாயாவாதம், s. A religious sect. வேதமுதல்வி, s. An epithet of Sarasvati, Lukshmi and Parvati. வேதமோத, inf. To recite the Vedas; [ex ஓது.] வேதரஞ்சகன், s. Brahma, பிரமன். வேதவியாக்கியானம், s. [Chris. usage.] Expounding the Scriptures. வேதவியாசர், s. Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas. வேதன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Jupiter, வியாழம். 3. Argha, அருகன். வேதா, s. God, கடவுள். 2. Brahma, பிரமன். (சது.) வேதாகமம், s. Authoritative books corresponding with the Vedas. 2. [Chris. usage.] The Bible. வேதாக்கிரேசர், s. Chief teachers of the Vedas. வேதாக்கினி, s. A sacrificial fire. See அக்கினி. வேதாங்கம், s. Sciences subordinate to the Vedas, of which there are six: 1. மந்திரம், mantras; 2. நிகண்டு, vocabulary; 3. வியாகரணம், grammar; 4. சந்தோபிசிதம், prosody; 5. நிருத்தம், explanation of mystic words; 6. சோதிடம், astronomy, astrology.--According to Wils. சிட்சை and கற்பம், are given for the first two. வேதாந்தம், s. [lit. the end of the Vedas.] A refined system of philosophy taught by Vyasa in the Uttara-mimamsa, and reduced by himself to 5 stanzas. It was commented on by Madevacharya, Sankaracharya, and Ramanujacharya, severally in the Dwaita, Adwaita, and Visishta--adwaita systems. The first and last allow a distinct existence of matter, but not its eternity. The second denies the real existence of matter, and resolves all existence into God. The Vedanta, simply stated, is a system of Pantheism. See அத்துவிதம் and துவிதம். 2. The thirty-two Upanishads, or appendixes, to the Vedas. See சாஸ்திரம். வேதாந்தசூடாமணி, s. A metaphysical treatise by சிவப்பிரகாசதேசிகர். வேதாந்தமதஸ்தாபனம், s. Establishing the doctrines of the Vedanta system. வேதாந்தன்--வேதார்த்தன், s. God as the object of the Vedas, கடவுள். வேதாந்தி, s. [pl. வேதாந்திகள்.] One skilled in the Vedanta. வேதோக்தம், s. That which is scriptural or declared in the Vedas. 24) *
