The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. Fifty. ஐம்பத்தொன்று, s. Fifty-one. ஐம்பால், s. [in grammar.] The five பால், or the genders and numbers, ஐந்து பால். 2. The five modes of dressing a woman's hair, ஐவகையாகமயிர்முடிக்கை. 3. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s. An ascetic, முனிவன். (p.) ஐம்புலாதி, s. [prov.] Anxiousness, being full of cares. ஐம்பூதம், s. The five elements, பஞ்சபூதம். ஐம்பொறி, s. The five organs of sense, பஞ்சேந்திரியம். ஐம்பொறிநுகர்ச்சி, s. Enjoyment of the senses, பொறிபுலனைக்கொள்ளுகை. ஐம்பொன், s. The five kinds of metals, பஞ்சலோகம். ஐயாயிரம், s. Five-thousand, ஐந்தா யிரம். ஐயைந்து, s. Five times five. ஐவகைப்பொழுது, s. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. A low, thorny shrub, ஓர்செடி, Gmelina Asiatica, L. நிலக்குழி, s. A hole in the ground in which a mortar is fixed, உரற்குழி. 2. The figure of a letter marked in sand for a child to trace over, அட்சரக்குழி. நிலக்குறி, s. Sigus said to appear in the ground when certain juices are poured on it, shewing whether treasure has been buried and of what kind--a branch of நீதிசாத்திரம். நிலக்கூந்தல், s. Character of soil as enriching its inhabitants or the contrary, நிலவளம். நிலச்சுருங்கி, appel. n. A plant, Oxalis sensitiva, L. நிலச்சூடு, s. Heat of the ground as felt by the bare feet, said to be injurious to the sight, and prejudicial to health. நிலத்தரசுகாரர், s. [prov. pl.] Proprietors of the soil; also noblemen. நிலத்தாமரை, s. The rose-shrub. (R.) நிலத்தியல்பு--நிலவியல்பு, s. As நிலச் சார்பு. நிலத்தியல்பாநீர்திரிந்தற்றாகுமாந்தர்க்கினத் தியல்ப தாகுமறிவு. At daybreak; (lit.) when the ground is clearly visible. நிலப்பங்கு, s. Share of land. நிலப்பனை, s. A kind of plant, ஓர்பூடு, Curculigo orchioides, L. (Roxb.) நிலப்பனைக்கிழங்கு--நிலப்பனங்கிழங் கு, s. Production of the soil, profit of land. நிலப்பிளப்பு, v. noun. Crack, chasm formed by the sun in muddy soils. நிலப்புழு--நிலப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of worm. நிலப்பெயர்ச்சி-நிலப்பேதம், s. Change of climate, as favorable or unfavorable to health of man or beast. நிலப்பொட்டு, s. A spot made on the forehead of children by rubbing the finger on the smeared floor and touching it, மண்ணைத்தேய்த்திடுந்திலதம். 2. A kind of medicinal fungus, ஓர்காளான். நிலப்போங்கு, s. Quality of soil, good or bad, as affecting plants. நிலமகள், s. The earth as a goddess, பூமாதேவி. நிலமகன், s. The planet Mars, செவ் வாய், symbolically described as a son of பூமிதேவி. நிலமட்டம், s. Ground or water level. See நீர்மட்டம். நிலமண், s. [prov.] Earth laid down to form the floor of a house, தரையைநிரப் புமண். நிலமதிப்பு, v. noun. Estimation of land as to its value, produce, &c. நிலமயக்கம், s. Blending of different tracts of country, as the hilly, forest, &c. See திணைமயக்கம். (p.) நிலமறிதல், v. noun. Knowing the different soils for wells, &c., பூமியின்வள மறிதல். 2. Knowing the lucky side or place, in gambling. வெல்லுநிலமறிந்தவன். One knowing the point at which to place himself in order to win. நிலமிதி, s. [prov.] Peculiarity of place, climate, &c., as affecting health or disposition, இடவுரிமை. நிலமெடுத்தல், v. noun. Selecting by astrological calculations an auspicious spot for the site of a house, temple, well, &c. நிலமை, s. [prov.] Landed property, பூஸ்திதி. See நிலைமை. நிலம்பிராண்டி, appel. n. A kind of herb which takes fast hold of the ground, ஓர்பூடு. நிலம்புலம், s. Lands of different kinds. நிலவடலி, s. A very young palmyratree, சிறுபனை. நிலவடுப்பு--நிலஅடுப்பு, s. A hole cut in the ground for a fire place. நிலவரி, s. Land-tax. 2. The proportion due to government, as lord of the soil. நிலவளம், s. Peculiarity of soil as நிலவாசி, 2. நிலவலயம், s. The earth, the circle or sphere of the earth, பூமி. (p.) நிலவறை, s. A cavern, a cave, a cellar, a subterraneous room, avenue, &c., நிலவாகை, s. Cassia senna, as நிலஆ விரை. நிலவாகைச்சூரணம், s. Senna powders. நிலவாசி, s. Superiority of soil, as improving plants, நிலப்போங்க. 2. Peculiarity of soil as improving or deteriorating plants; sometimes also men, beasts, milk, &c. நிலவாடகை, s. Prescribed rules of religion, morals, caste, &c., or the practice of rules, வைதீகநிலை. 11. Situation or aspect of a planet in respect to its influence, கிரகநிலை. 12. Usage, முறைமை. 13. A stand, fixture, ஆதனம். 14. Pendent part of an ornament, ஆபர ணத்திற்றொங்கணி. 15. Appropriate or wonted place, habitation, place of residence, வசிக்குமிடம். 16. Place, location, இடம். 17. The earth, the world, பூமி. 18. Time, காலம். 19. [prov.] One of the two land measures, that applied to any but rice-lands. See நெல்லிலாச்சம். 2. Fordableness, ford, தாண்டுதுறை.-- The நிலை, (attitudes) in archery are; 1. பைசாசம், standing with one leg straight and the other bent, as devils are said to stand; 2. மண்டலம், standing with both knees bent out; 3. ஆலீடம், standing with the right knee bent out, and the left foot advanced; 4. பிரத்தியாலீடம், standing with the left knee bent and the right foot advanced. (சது.)--Note. Some authorities give a fifth posture, சமபாதம், standing with the feet even. நிலையுரியாய்ச்சீலையையுரிந்தான். He stripped or made himself naked. நிலையைவிட்டால்நீச்சு. If the fordable depth be left, one must swim--videlicet, give not up a certainty for an uncertainty. நிலைகலங்க, inf. Door-post, door-frame, வாசற்கால். நிலைக்குடி, s. Settled or naturalized inhabitants, proprietors of the soil, aborigines, பழங்குடி. நிலைக்குத்த--நிலைக்குத்திட, inf. To be fixed as the eyes at the approach of death. See குத்து, v. நிலைதவற, inf. To fall from one's station or rank. 2. To deviate from prescribed rules, morals, &c., to degenerate. நிலைதளம்ப, inf. To be moveable, நிலை தளர. 2. To be unsettled as a family, a government, &c., உறுதிகெட. 3. To fluctuate, to waver, to swerve, from the path of virtue, அலைய. 4. To be ruined in one's cicumstances, நலிந்துபோக. 5. To be neglected, as one's property or affairs, பராமரியாதுகிடக்க. நிலைத்தண்ணீர், s. Standing water in pools, tanks, &c. நிலைநிறுத்த, inf. To set up, establish one's self in better circumstances. 2. To restore to a right state in religion or morals. நிலைநிறுத்தக்கொடுக்க, inf. To fulfil a promise. நிலைநிற்க, inf. To stand firm in one's principles, to persevere, to maintain consistency. 2. To be permanent, lasting or enduring; to remain. நிலைநீங்காமை, s. Steadfastness. நிலைபரம், s. See Beschi's Shen-Tamil Gram. p. 85. நிலைமண்டுதல், v. noun. Making a long stay in a place from home. 2. Sticking closely to a place, as a person, or animal. நிலைமாறுதல், v. noun. Changing place, principles or religion, being proselyted, இடமாறுதல். 2. [in gram.] Being changed in place--as letters, in words, as வைகாசி for வைசாகி, the latter being according to the original, சொல்லினெழுத்துமா றுதல். நிலைமொழி, s. [in gram.] The preceding or antecedent word, வருமொழிக்கு முதன்மொழி. நிலையகம், s. House, abode, வீடு. (p.) நிலையங்கி, s. A robe, a cloak. நிலையழிய, inf. A treatise on augury. பஞ்சபட்சிவேளை, s. Augury from the eating, sleeping, walking, governing and dying of the five birds, between the full and the new moon. 2. An auspicious hour, ascertained by augury. பஞ்சபர்வங்கள், s. Five religious ceremonial days in each fortnight. பஞ்சபாணம், s. A kind of vessel of five plates collectively, or made of five metals, used by advanced religionists, to hold water for purification, பஞ்சலோக பாத்திரம். 2. (R.) The five receptacles in the body are: ஆமாசயம், the stomach; 2. இரத்தசயம், the heart; 3. கர்ப்பாசயம், the womb; 4. சலாசயம், the bladder; 5. மலாசயம், rectum. பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. The five weapons of Vishnu; the discus, club, chank, bow and sword. 2. [prov.] A gold ornament worn by children or women, on the neck with the tali, bearing in relief the five weapons of Vishnu. It is of two kinds, அரசிலைப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one made in the form of fig-leaf; வட்டப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one in a circular form, ஓராபரணம். பஞ்சாயுதபாணி-பஞ்சாயுதன், s.
