ār (p. 41) . Who, the interrogative pronoun common to both numbers and all persons, in the rational class, though properly the third person plural--contracted from யாவர் or யார். (c.) நீயார்? Who art thou? அவரார்? Who is he?--Note. When உம் is added to ஆர், it implies all, and with a negative, none--as யாரும், all, யாருமில்லை, no one--also when it is doubled, it is used distributively--as ஆராருக்குக் கொடுத் தான்? (சது.)--The seven principal sounds or notes in the vocal and instrumental music of the Hindus are called, சுரம், in singing, and நரம்பு, on stringed instruments; they are, 1. குரல், the guttural sound, the sound coming from the throat, மிடற்றாற்குரல். 2. துத்தம், the second tone of the gamut, or நி modulated by the tongue, நாவினாற்றுத்தம். 3. கைக்கிளை, the sound caused by the palate, அண்ணத்தாற்கைக்கிளை. 4. உழை, the cerebral, or the sound coming from the head, சிரத்தாலுழை. 5. இளி, that which proceeds from the forehead, நெற்றியாலிளி. 6. விளரி, the pectoral, or that which proceeds from the breast, நெஞ்சால்விளரி. 7. தாரம், that from the nose, or nasal, மூக் காற்றாரம்.--These sounds, they compare: 1. With those of animals--as that of a peacock, a bull, a sheep, &c. 2. With the different tastes of milk, honey, &c. 3. With the different scents of jasmin, nymph&oe;a, &c.--The letters (அட்சரம்.) by which they express these notes are as follow: 1. ஆஅ. 2. ஈஇ. 3. ஊஉ. 4. ஏஎ. 5. ஐஇ. 6. ஓஒ. 7. ஔஉ.--The time or measure, (மாத்திரை,) of these notes is as follows:The 1st note குரல் contains 4 measures நான்கு குரல். 2d துத்தம் contains 4 measures நான்குதுத்தம். 3d கைக்கிளை ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுகைக்கிளை. 4th உழை ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுழை. 5th இளி ,, 4 ,, நான்கிளி. 6th விளரி ,, 3 ,, மூன்றுவிளரி. 7th தாரம் ,, 2 ,, இரண்டுதாரம். From the combinations of these notes or sounds, are formed seven different kinds of airs or tunes; (பாலை) viz.: 1. செம்பாலை, or the air in which the first note is doubled, குரலேகுரல். 2. படுமலைப் பாலை, the air in which the second and first notes are compounded, துத்தமேகுரல். 3. செவ்வழிப்பாலை, the air in which the third and the first notes are compounded, கைக்கிளையேகுரல். 4. அரும்பாலை, the air in which the fourth and the first notes are compounded, உழையேகுரல். 5. கொடி ப்பாலை, the air in which the fifth and first notes are compounded, இளியேகுரல். 6. விளரிப்பாலை, the air in which the sixth and first notes are compouned, விளரியே குரல். 7. மேற்செம்பாலை, the air in which the seventh and first notes are compounded, தாரமேகுரல்.--The differences of these tunes are as follow; viz.: 1. கொ டிப்பாலை, a tune higher than செம்பாலை. 2. விளரிப்பாலை and மேற்செம்பாலை, tunes higher than கொடிச்செம்பாலை.--The three different parts in music are: 1. மந்தவிசை, bass, or the lowest pitch--also called, மந்தரம் or காகுளி. 2. மத்திமலிசை, tenor or medium--also called, மதுரம் or சமன். 3. தாரவிசை, treble or the highest pitch-also called, உச்சம் or வல்லிசை.--The different parts are not sung together, but one after another in succession--மந்த விசை, takes its pitch in the key note of the bass--the மத்திமவிசை, in the fifth-and the உச்சம், in the octave. The term is also applied to the several notes or sounds of the octave--also called சுரம்-as the first சுரம், the second சுரம், &c., and the whole are called the சரளி or gamut. இசைகேடு, s. Dissonance, discord, want of harmony, சுரபேதம். 2. Dishonor, disgrace, ill-fame, அவகீர்த்தி. 3. Want of opportunity, inconvenience, inauspiciousness--as of a day, ஒத்துக்கொள் ளாமை. 4. [prov.] Reduced state, emaciated state, இடைந்துபோனநிலைமை. இசைகொள்ள, inf. To be renowned, கீர்த்திபெற. இசைக்குழல், s. A musical windinstrument, ஊதுகுழல். இசைத்தமிழ், s. One of the three kinds of Tamil odes, or other poetry adapted to song--also the various changes made to accommodate language to music, முத்தமிழினொன்று. இசைத்திரிபு, s. A change of tune by mistake, ஓசைப்பிறழ்வு. 2. Variation in music, இசைமாறுகை. 3. A different enunciation of the same terms, according to the different senses they are intended to convey, இசையறுத்துக்கூறுகை-as செம்பொன்பதின்கழஞ்சு, may be செம்பு ஒன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the copper is nine கழஞ்சு--or செம்பொன் பதின்கழஞ்சு, the fine gold is ten கழஞ்சு. So குறும்பரம்பு may be குறும்பர் அம்பு, the army of territorial chiefs-or குறும் பரம்பு, a short board used for smoothing ploughed fields. இசைநாள், s. The twenty-fifth, also the twenty-sixth lunar mansions, பூரட்டாதி and உத்திரட்டாதி. இசைநிறை, s. [in poetry.] The use of a letter, or word to fill the measure-an expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல்; as ஏஎ யிவ ளொருத்திபேடி. Heh! This is a hermaphrodite. இசைநூல், s. The science of music. இசைப்பாட்டு, s. A melody, tune, song, காந்தாரம். இசைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati, the wife of Brahma; the goddess of speech, of music, fame, praise, &c., சரச்சுவதி. (p.) இசையுள்ளான், s. A man of fame or praise. இசையெச்சம், s. [in grammar.] Ellipsis or omission of a word, சொல் லெச்சம். இசையெடுக்க, inf. To pitch or begin a tune. இசைவல்லோர்--இசைவாணர். s. Proficients in music, சங்கீதபாடகர். 2. Heavenly choristers, கந்தருவர். 39)

iṭi (p. 45) s. A stroke, blow, push with the fist, elbow, shoulder, &c.--also with a club or other blunt weapon, தாக்குகை. 2. A thunder-bolt, அசனி. 3. (p.) A roar, thunder, sound, noise, ஒலி. 4. Small mortars fastened upon a pole, which are loaded with powder and discharged at festivals, funerals, &c. இடிக்கொடி, s. The flag of Indra, இந்திரன்கொடி. இடிக்கொடியோன், s. Indra, இந் திரன். இடிபட--இடியுண்ண, inf. To be pushed about, elbowed, shouldered, battered, demolished, &c.--as a wall, bank, &c. 2. To be pounded--as rice, &c. இடிமுழக்கம், s. Thunder. இடியப்பம், s. A kind of paste or cake cooked in steam, சிற்றுண்டிவகை யிலொன்று. இடியப்பத்தட்டு, s. Flat circles or squares of braided rattan, &c., used for making the இடியப்பம். இடியப்பவுரல், s. The mould or cullender through which the paste is pressed to form the cake. இடியப்பவுரற்கண், s. The holes of the இடியப்பம் mould. இடிவிழ, inf. To strike as lightning, to fall as a thunder-bolt. 2. iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. A poem uttered by holy persons coming from a distance to the hero of the poem at the door of whose residence they stand and desire the door-keeper to inform his master of their arrival, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (See பிரபந்தம்.) 2. An outside door, புறவாயில். (நீதிநெறி.) 3. The last letter of a word or verse, ஈற்றெழுத்து. (p.) கடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. A word at the end of a sentence understood in other parts--one of the தீவகம். கடைநிலையளபெடை, s. The rhyme in which the last letter of each verse is lengthened. கடைநிலையெழுத்து, s. [in grammar.] Letters proper to end a word, இறுதிநிலை. கடைபோக, inf. To end, terminate, conclude, முடிய. 2. To be fulfilled, நிறைவேற. கடைபோட--கடைவைக்க, inf. To set up a shop, open a shop. கடைப்பட, inf. To be inferior, below mediocrity, to be last in quality or estimation, degree or order, இழிவாக. 2. To be practicable, capable of completion, நிறைவேற. என்னாலிதுகடைப்படாது. This will not be completed by me. கடைப்பாடு, s. Determination, தீர் மானிப்பு. 2. Inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. கடைப்பந்தி, s. The lower end of a dining table or of a row of guests, கடைசிப்பந்தி. கடைப்பிடி, s. Bearing in mind, remembering, ஞாபகம். 2. Indelible impressions of gratitude for benefits received, of duties to be performed, of the importance of virtue and religion, மறவா மை. 3. Certainty, ascertainment, established truth, தேற்றம். 4. Firm belief in the essentials of religion serving as the hope and support of the mind in reference to a future state, the last grasp of the soul, உறுதி. 5. Firm determination, firm resolve, either for good or evil, கரும முடிக்குந்துணிவு. 6. Doctrines, truth firmly believed as necessary to salvation, உறுதி யானகொள்கை. கடைப்பிடிக்க, inf. To ascertain clearly, to know certainly, தெளிய. 2. To determine, resolve firmly, be decided in purpose either in a good or evil course, துணிய. 3. To remember, to bear in mind benefits, to be grateful, &c., to be deeply sensible of one's obligations for favor received, மறவாமலிருக்க. 4. To have an abiding sense of the importance of virtue and religion, சன்மார்க்கத்திலுறுதியாயி ருக்க. 5. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. To grasp, resort to--as the soul for its last refuge, பற்ற. 7. To provide, be provident, be economical, வீண்செலவுசெய்யாது வைக்க. (p.) கதவிலரேதற்சார்ந்தார்வண்ணங்கடைப்பிடியாதார். Unkind are they who are forgetful of the situation of their friends. (காரிகையுரை.) மற்றதன்கள்ளங்கடைப்பிடித்தனன்று. It is important to have an abiding sense of the wiles of Yama. வாழ்க்கைக்குவேண்டும்பொருளறிந்துகடைப்பிடி த்தலும். Knowing and duly providing all things necessary for her household-(குறளுரை.) நன்மைகடைப்பிடி. Persevere in good works. (ஔவை). கடைப்பிறப்பு, s. The meanest species of birth in any class of beings, இழிந்தபிறப்பு. கடைப்புணர்முரண்--கடைமுரண், s. A species of rhyme when the last foot of every line is of opposite meaning, ஓர்தொடை. கடைப்புணர்வு--கடைப்பூட்டு, s. [in jewelry.] Clasp, hasp, அணியின்கடைப் புணர்வு. கடைப்புத்தி, s. [prov.] Stupidity, இழிந்தபுத்தி. 2. A piece of folly, பின்புத்தி. கடைப்போக்கு, s. The flood-gate of tank. கடைமடக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Continued recurrence of the same words at the end of each line through a stanza, but with different meanings, சொல்லணி யிலொன்று. See மடக்கு. கடைமுறை, s. The last time, eventually, கடைசிமுறை. (நீதிநெறி. 48.) கடைமோனை--கடையாகுமோனை, s. (See மோனை.) A rhyme when the first letter of the last foot of every line is the same, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையயல், s. [in grammar.] The penultimate, ஈற்றயல். (p.) கடையர், s. (fem. கடைசியர்--க டைச்சியர்.) Laboring classes in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். (p.) கடையழிய, inf. To be afflicted with a painful and lingering disease, to suffer extremely, வருந்த. 2. To be distressed with poverty, வறுமையுற. 3. To degenerate, கேடுற. கடையனல், s. The fire by which the world will finally be consumed. கடையன், s. A man of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோன். கடையாகெதுகை, s. A rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையாட்டம், s. [prov.] Lingering in disease, excessive suffering from disease, வருத்தம். 2. Vexation, teasing, imminence, trouble, annoyance, உலைவு, lit. mean work. கடையாட்டப்பட, inf. To drudge, to be employed in mean work. 2. To linger in disease, suffer exceedingly, வ ருந்த. 3. To be vexed. harassed. &c.-as a nurse by troublesome children, உ லைய. கடையாணி, s. A linch-pin, அச் சாணி. 2. A peg or pin used to keep a tenon in a mortise, or for any similar purpose, பூட்டாணி. கடையாந்தரம்--கடையீறு, s. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A shop where commodities of various kinds are sold. மளிகைக்கடை, s. A wholesale ware-house. காசுக்கடை, s. An exchange. அடிக்கடை, s. The first shop in a market-street. மருந்துக்கடை, s. An apothecary's shop. கசாய்க்கடை, s. (Tel.) A butcher's shop. சாராயக்கடை, s. An arrack shop. கீரைக்கடை, s. A green-grocer's shop. சவுளிக்கடை, s. A cloth-merchant's shop. விரற்கடை, s. Positive injunctions, established rules, duties, obligations, &c.--as of caste, religion, connexions, &c., கட்டுப்பாடு. 14. (p.) Abundance, plenty, மிகுதி. 15. Fortification, protection, defence, அரண். 16. The side of a mountain, மலைப்பக்கம். எல்லாருமொருகட்டாயிருக்கிறார்கள். They have all plotted together. பெண்சாதிகாற்கட்டுப்பிள்ளைவாய்க்கட்டு. A wife shackles the feet, and a child stops the mouth; i. e. a married man with a family can neither go, nor eat as he pleases. அவன்என்கட்டுக்குள்ளேநிற்கிறஆளல்ல. He is not subject to my influence--he does not listen to my advice, &c. கட்டழகு, s. Great beauty, பேரழ கு. 2. Ornament, அலங்காரம். கட்டழல், s. A vehement fire. கட்டாடி, s. [prov.] A person temporarily possessed for the purpose of uttering oracles or கட்டு, a species of divination inferior to சன்னதம், குறிசொல்வோ ன். 2. A washerman in respect, considered as a diviner; many of this caste having been celebrated in this character, வண்ணான். 3. A chief of the washer tribe, வண்ணார்தலைவன். கட்டாண்மை, s. Bravery, superior heroism, intrepidity, பேராண்மை. கட்டிரதம்--கட்டுத்தேர், s. A car constructed for a particular occasion made anew every year. கட்டிளமை, s. Tender age, being very young. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A young lad. கட்டுக்கடக்க, inf. To exceed the limits, banks, &c.; violate established rules, positive injunctions, &c. கட்டுக்கடங்காதது, appel. n. That which is unrestrainable, unmanageable, ungovernable. கட்டுக்கட்ட, s. To tie up a pack, &c., மூட்டைகட்ட. 2. To fabricate, invent a fiction, a slander, பொய்க்கதைகட்ட. 3. To tie cloths to a boil in applying medicine, பருவுக்குமருந்துகட்ட. கட்டுக்கதை--கட்டுவிசேஷம், s. A fable, a fiction, mythological tales. கட்டுக்கரப்பான், s. Eruption on a child. கட்டுக்கலியாணம், s. [prov.] A wedding, marriage ceremony, &c., festival--from the bridegroom's tying the marriage symbol on the bride's neck. கட்டுக்கழுத்தி, s. A married woman, she who wears the தாலி, மங்கலமங் கை. கட்டுக்காரன், s. [prov.] (fem. கட் டுக்காரி.) A diviner, a conjurer, குறிசொல் வோன். கட்டுக்காவல், s. A very strict guard, close custody--applied to the protection of girls arrived at the age of puberty, &c., great care, great strictness, கட்டானகாவல். கட்டுங்காவலுமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in close confinement. கட்டுக்கிடை--கட்டுக்கிடையன், s. Cloth or other goods lying long unsold, நாட்பட்டசரக்கு. கட்டுக்குத்தகை, s. A contract or lease of land for many years together, a contract for a whole dhoney without reference to the number of trips, the weight of the cargo, &c. கட்டுக்கூட்டு, s. [prov.] A fabrication, a forgery, a fiction, a fable, கட் டுக்கதை. 2. An intertexture of letters, a cipher, மாற்றியெழுதப்பட்டது. கட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. To consult a diviner. கட்டுக்கொடி, s. A tether, a rope stretched along the ground to which cattle, goats, &c., are tied by the leg in a row at night, ஆடுமாடுகட்டுங்கயிறு. கட்டுக்கொதித்தல், v. noun. To divine, conjure. கட்டுச்சோறு--கட்டுசோறு, s. Boiled rice, &c., tied up for a journey, ஆற் றுணா. கட்டுடைக்க, inf. [prov.] To be broken--as a blister, boil, &c. கட்டுடைத்தல்--கட்டுமுறித்தல், v. noun. Making a large breach--as a river in its banks, the sea in the shore --as in the breaking up at the universal deluge. கட்டுண்ணல், v. noun. Being bound, &c., கட்டப்படுதல். கட்டுண்ணி, s. One who has been frequently bound. கட்டுத்தளர, inf. To grow slack --as a tie; to be loose--as a bale, &c. கட்டுத்தறி, s. A post to which an elephant may be tied, யானைமுதலியன கட்டுங்கம்பம். கட்டுத்திரவியம், s. [prov.] Treasure bound up in one's cloth, &c., பொற்கிழி. கட்டுத்திரள, inf. [prop. கட்டிதிர ள.] To form or swell--as a tumor. கட்டுத்தையல், s. A kind of firm sewing. கட்டுத்தோணி--கட்டுப்படகு, s. A dhoney or vessel of which the seams are sewed together. கட்டுப்பட, inf. To yield to, to submit, be influenced by, be brought under the power of, be overcome by, கட் டுக்குள்ளடங்க. 2. To be bound by spells or otherwise restrained, மந்திரமுதலியவற் றாற்கட்டுப்பட. 3. To be constipated--as the system; to be obstructed--as waters, as humors in the system, blood, urine, menstruation, &c., தடைப்பட. ஒருமயிரினாலேகட்டுப்படுவான். He may be bound by a single hair; i. e. he will be easily persuaded or prevailed upon. கட்டுப்படுத்த, inf. To restrain, confine, subdue, subordinate, control, restrict, subject, கட்டுக்குளடக்க. கட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To stop, prevent. கட்டுப்பாடு, s. To ascertain the origin and cure of a disease by a magical exercise--a sort of divination. கட்டுப்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] Ornaments for the body, jewels, ஆபரணம். கட்டுப்பெட்டி, s. [vul.] A stiff basket braided with ratan, olas, &c., fastened by tying, for holding clothes, &c. கட்டுப்பேச்சு--கட்டுவார்த்தை--க ட்டுவிசேஷம், s. A fabricated story, fiction, வீண்கதை. கட்டுமட்டு, s. A float or raft, a catamaran, மிதவை. கட்டுமாமரம், s. An engrafted large kind of mango tree, ஓர்வகைமாமரம்--also called ஒட்டுமாமரம். கட்டுமாம்பழம், s. A mango fruit which, when it matures, is protected with a case. எட்டியிலேகட்டுமரம்பழமுண்டாமோ. Will the bitter poisonous எட்டி tree produce mangos? கட்டுமுகனை, s. [prov.] Authority, custody, trust, அதிகாரம். 2. management, direction, administration, supervision, superintendence, மேல்விசாரணை. 3. Economy, frugality, husbandry, சிக்கனம். 4. Strictness, rigor, restraint, precision, limitation, restriction, check, confinement, constraint, கண்டிப்பு. 5. Exclusion, debarring, தடை. கட்டுரை, s. An avowal, a solemn declaration, undoubted truth, infallible expression, உறுதிச்சொல். 2. A pithy or sententious expression, a proverb, பழ மொழி. 3. Metaphorical language, magnifying or depreciating by figure of speech, புனைந்துரை. கட்டுரையன்றுபட்டாங்கே. This is not an exaggeration, but the plain truth. (பிரபுலிங்.) கட்டுவடம், s. A necklace, மணி மாலை. கட்டுவர்க்கம், s. Clothes, all sorts of wearing apparel, உடை. கட்டுவாக்கியம், s. Puns, quibbles, a conundrum. கட்டுவாங்கம், s. A club, &c., கட டங்கம். கட்டுவிட, inf. To be loosened, untied, கட்டவிழ. 2. To be broken, கட்ட ற. 3. To loosen--as the joints and muscles at death, உடற்பொருத்துவிட. 4. To be reduced, weakened--as the body, பலவீனப்பட. கட்டுவிட்டுப்பாய, inf. To burst out and flow--as water by making a breach in an embankment. கட்டுவேலை, s. A fabric, a structure, building. கட்டோசை, s. A tremendous noise, a loud report, பேரொலி. கட்டோடே, adv. [vul.] Wholly, entirely--used with words implying rejection, destruction, &c., or with negatives. கட்டோடேயழிந்துபோயிற்று. It is utterly ruined. என்னிடத்திலேகட்டோடேயில்லை. I have none at all. கட்டோடேதள்ள, inf. To reject utterly. நடுக்கட்டு, s. A girdle. 2. The middle building of a house. சாதிக்கட்டு, s. The customs, duties, obligations, &c., of caste. சமயக்கட்டு, s. Religious bonds, obligations. சரீரக்கட்டு, s. A compact body, firm constitution. சரீரக்கட்டானவன், s. One with a strong constitution. நீர்க்கட்டு, s. A stoppage of urine, strangury. மலக்கட்டு, s. Constipation, costiveness. மலக்கட்டுச்சன்னி, s. A fit of apoplexy causing constipation. முறைக்கட்டு, s. [prov.] Marrying a girl within the degrees of consanguinity. உட்கட்டு, s. A woman's necklace. பின்கட்டு, s. The back building of a house. 2. Tackling the arms together behind the back. முன்கட்டு, s. The foremost portion of a house containing two or more ranges one behind the other. 37)

kṇ (p. 89) s. The eye, விழி. 2. A hollow mark or spot, குழி. 3. A roundish hole, orifice, crevice, cavity, aperture, துவாரம். 4. A knot or point in a tree, கணு. 5. (p.) A bamboo, மூங்கில். 6. Place, location, situation, இடம். 7. A form of the locative case--that employed in grammatical examples, &c., ஏழனுருபு. 8. Kindness, benignity, graciousness, protection, கண்ணோட் டம். 9. Greatness, பெருமை. கண்கண்டதுகைசெய்யும். What the eye has seen the hand may do; i. e. we learn by observation. கண்காணநடந்தசெய்தி. Any event that happened before one's eyes. கண்ணிலேகாணப்படாது. I hate the very sight of him. 2. Even the sight of it is injurious; i. e. prejudicial--spoken where mutual animosity exists--as in the kite and snake, &c. 3. (p.) It will not appear to the eye. கண்ணிலேகுத்துகிறதோ. Does it hurt your eyes? why do you envy me, &c. கண்ணுக்கின்பமானபொருள். That which is delectable to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன். One as precious or dear as the eye. கண்ணுக்குப்புண்ணுமல்லக்காண்பார்க்குநோயுமல் ல. There is no wound to be seen, nor any visible symptoms of disease; the sickness, if real, is internal. கண்ணுக்குள்ளேநிற்கின்றது. It is fixed in my eyes, imagination, &c.-- as a departed friend, a thing lost, &c. இராசாவுக்குக்கண்மந்திரி. A counsellor is the eye of the king. அண்டைவீட்டுச்சண்டைகண்ணுக்குக்குளிர்ச்சி.... The quarrels of neighbors are gratifying to the eyes of the instigator. என்கண்ணே. [An expression of endearment.] Oh, thou, my eyes; i. e. my darling. இறந்தனையோஎன்கண்ணேஎன்னுயிரேஅபிமாவின் றென்செய்தாயே. Ah! Abima, my eyes, my life, art thou dead! whence this cruel deed? (பார.) அவன்கண்ணவிந்துபோயிற்று. He has lost his sight. அவன்கண்ணிலேபட்டேன். I suffer from his eye, his evil eye is upon me, he envies me. கட்கட்டி, s. [prov.] As கண்கட்டி. கட்செவி, s. A snake--its eyes being considered the organs of hearing as well as of sight, பாம்பு. (p.) கட்புலன், s. The sense of sight, நேத்திரேந்திரியம். ஓர்கட்பறை, s. A tambourine. கண்கடை, s. [in combination.] Corner of the eye. கண்கடைதெரியாதவன், s. One elated and blind through prosperity. கண்கடைதெரியாமற்பரிமாறுகிறான். He acts in disrespect of superiors through elation, &c. 2. He acts with recklessness, wantonness, waste of property, &c. கண்கட்ட, inf. To blind the eyes by magic. 2. To cover the eyes, to blindfold. கண்கட்டி, s. A sty on the eye. கண்கட்டு, s. Blind-folding, blindman's-buff. கண்கட்டுகாசம், s. A species of cataract. கண்கட்டுவித்தை, s. The art of legerdemain or blinding by magic, ஓர் காருடவித்தை. 2. The tricks played by conjurers, தந்திரவித்தை. கண்கலங்க, inf. To weep--as the eyes from dust, a trifling hurt. 2. To be distressed. கண்கழுவ, inf. [prov.] To pour water on plants, growing corn, &c., especially the first time. கண்கழுவுதண்ணீர், s. [prov.] Water conducted in channels for watering young plants, newly sown seed, &c. கண்காசம், s. A disease of the eye, cataract. கண்காட்சி, s. Vision, sight, பார் வை. 2. A gratifying or pleasant sight, a pageant, spectacle, show, கண்ணுக்குச்சிற ப்பு. 3. A prodigy, அதிசயம். 4. [ironically.] A disgusting ungainly sight, துக் கக்காட்சி. கண்காணம், s. Oversight, inspection, watch, மேல்விசாரிப்பு. கண்காணக்காரன்--கண்காணச்சே வகன், s. A watchman. கண்காணஞ்செலுத்த--கண்காணம் பண்ண, inf. To superintend, watch. கண்காணம்வைக்க, inf. To appoint an inspector, to set a watch. கண்காணி, s. An inspector, an overseer, a supervisor, an agent, மேல்வி சாரிப்புக்காரன். 2. One who looks after the subordinates in a government office, சிரே ஷ்டாதிகாரி. 3. [In Christ. usage.] A bishop, அத்தியட்சர். கண்காணிக்க, inf. To oversee, supervise, superintend, மேல்விசாரணைசெய் ய. கண்காணிப்பு, v. noun. Oversight, supervision. கண்காந்தல், v. noun. The hot sensation of the eyes caused by neglecting to bathe, by disease, &c., கண் ணெரிவு. கண்காரர், s. Persons who sit before a conjurer, looking at the magical paint without winking, and to whom the discoveries are made, அஞ்ச னம்பார்ப்போர். கண்குத்திபாம்பு, s. A bright green snake that is said to strike at the eye, the eye-snake; a whip-snake. கண்குவளை, s. The socket of the eye, கட்குழி. கண்குழிதல், v. noun. Sinking of the eyes by disease, emaciation, &c. கண்குளிரப்பார்க்க, inf. To refresh the eyes by viewing a pleasing object--as a dear child, &c., to feast the eyes. கண்குளிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Refreshing, gratifying, pleasing to the sight. கண்குறிப்பு, s. A significant expression of the eye, கண்சமிக்கை. கண்கூச, inf. To see obscurely from the eyes being dazzled. 2. To be weak-sighted, tender-eyed. கண்கூடு, s. Socket of the eye, கண்குவளை. 2. A thing in sight, ocular demonstration, பிரத்தியட்சம். கண்கூடாய், adv. Evidently, demonstrably. கண்கூர்மை, s. Sharpness of sight. கண்கூலி, s. A present for finding a thing lost. கண்கெட, inf. To be struck blind. 2. adv. In spite of one's own sight, to the destruction of one's own eyes, &c. கண்கெடச்செய்ய, inf. To do what one knows to be wrong--as presenting defiled food to an idol, friend, &c. கண்கெடப்பேச, inf. To falsify the evidence of one's own eyes in delivering testimony, &c. கண்கெட்டதெய்வம், s. The blind deity--a profane and familiar phrase among the vulgar used in seasons of distress. கண்கொள்ளாக்காட்சி, s. A great or wonderful object, a thing over-powering to the sight, அதிசயக்காட்சி. கண்சமிக்கை, s. A wink with the eyes. கண்சாடை, s. A winking at, taking faint notice of, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பு, s. A side-look in displeasure. 2. Connivance. 3. Partiality, favor shown by a wink, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பாய்ப்பார்க்க, inf. To look jealously, to have an evil eye. கண்சாய்ப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To overlook, be partial in judgment, to connive. கண்சிமிட்ட, inf. To make a signal with the eye. 2. To wink, to twinkle through weakness of eyes. கண்சிமிட்டு, s. A signal of the eye. கண்சுருட்ட, inf. To entice one by uncommon beauty, lustre, &c., to cantivate, to fascinate. கண்செருகல்--கண்சொருகல், v. noun. Rolling up of the eyes--as in swoons, fits, death-bed, and sometimes in sleep. கண்ணஞ்ச, inf. To fear, dread, as excited by the sight of a superior, lightning, &c. கண்ணஞ்சனம், s. Collyrium, the ointment used to blacken the eye-lashes. 2. Blue vitriol. கண்ணடைக்க, inf. To choke, stop up--as the orifice of a spring, a nipple, துவாரமடைக்க. கண்ணடைய, inf. To become choked or stopped up--as a hole, &c., தூவாரமடைபட. 2. [prov.] To cease shooting--as the head or heart of a plant, பயிரின்குருத்துக்கண்ணடைய. இடியப்பக்குழல்கண்ணடைந்துபோயிற்று. The இடியப்ப mould is stopped up. கண்ணடைந்தபால், s. Milk injured by being kept too long. கண்ணப்பன், s. One of the sixtythree devotees of Siva who scooped out his own eye and consecrated it to that deity--also called திண்ணன். கண்ணயர்ந்துபோதல், v. noun. [impr. கண்ணசந்துபொதல்.] Being heavy or drowsy. கண்ணரிப்பு, v. noun. A kind of itching disease in the eye, கண்ணில்வரு மோர்நோய். கண்ணருள், s. Favor. கண்ணழற்சி, v. noun. Blank squares, or balks left between the furrows in cross ploughing, திடரிடைவிட்டுழுமுழவு. கண்ணாடிச்சுவர், s. A small wall to screen the fire in a room. கண்ணாடிபார்க்க, inf. To look into a looking glass. கண்ணாடிப்பலகை, s. A plank with a peeping-hole. கண்ணாடிப்புடவை, s. A thin inferior kind of cloth. முகக்கண்ணாடி, s. A looking glass. மூக்குக்கண்ணாடி, s. A standing looking glass, a stationary mirror. கண்ணாமண்டை, s. [prop. கண்மண் டை.] s. The skull near the eyes. கண்ணாம்பூச்சி, s. [com.] Covering the eyes with the hands or doubling the upper eyelid over the eyeball inside out, and running round as children in play, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Giddiness, dizziness, கண்மயக்கம். கண்ணாம்பூச்சியாட, inf. To run about in play with the eyes covered, or with the eyelid doubled over. கண்ணாம்பொத்தி, s. [prop. கண் பொத்தி.] A game, children's play, hideand-seek. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek. கண்ணாயிரம், s. The argus of the Hindus. கண்ணாயிருக்க, inf. To be watchful, vigilant, attentive, looking steadfastly, நோக்கமாயிருக்க. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணாயிருக்கிறான். He is as dear or precious as one's eyes. கண்ணாரக்காண, inf. To see plainly, to see with one's own eyes, பிரத்தியட் சமாகக்காண. கண்ணிடுக்குதல், v. noun. Being sleepy, drowsy. கண்ணிதழ்--கண்ணிமை, s. Eyelid, கண்ணினதிமை. 2. A wink of the eye, கண்ணிமைப்பு. To apply a fomentation, a flower, &c., to the eye. கண்ணீர், s. Tears. ஏழைஅழுதகண்ணீர்கூரியவாளுக்கொக்கும். The tears of the poor are like a sharp sword. கண்ணீராக்கி, s. Crude camphor, பச்சைக்கருப்பூரம். கண்ணீருகுக்க--கண்ணீர்சொரிய --கண்ணீர்வடிக்க--கண்ணீர்விட, inf. To shed tears, கண்ணீர்சிந்த. கண்ணீர்ததும்ப--தளம்ப, inf. To have the eyes suffused with tears. கண்ணுக்கரசன், s. Blue vitriol, து ருசி. கண்ணுக்கினியான், s. The பொன் னாங்காணி plant. 2. The கரிசலாங்கண்ணி plant, lit. one pleasing to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன், s. A person dear to one as his own eyes. கண்ணுக்குத்தைக்க, inf. To attract the eyes, to arrest the attention. கண்ணுதல், s. Sleep, a nap, நித் திரை. கண்ணுறங்க, inf. To sleep, நித்தி ரைசெய்ய. கண்ணுறுத்த, inf. To smart as the eyes, from any foreign substance--as dust, ophthalmia, &c., கண்ணிலுறுத்த. என்கண்ணையுறுத்துகின்றது. Something hurts my eye. 2. My eye smarts from ophthalmia. கண்ணூறு--கண்ணேறு, s. The blight of the eyes, an unlucky look supposed to cause sickness, &c., திட்டி தோஷம். விண்ணேறுதப்பினாலுங்கண்ணேறுதப்பாது. One may escape a thunderbolt, but to escape an evil eye is impossible. மதன்கண்ணேறெய்தலுங்கழிந்ததோ. (Has the waist) become so attenuated through the influence of kama's eyes? கண்ணூறுகழிக்க, inf. To dispel the blight of an evil eye by prescribed ceremonies. கண்ணூறுபட, inf. To suffer or experience the ill effects of evil eyes. கண்ணெச்சில், s. Fascinating, bewitching, blighting, &c.--as by a glance, and otherwise, as in food looked on with an envious eye, &c., கண்ணூறு. கருப்புரவிளக்கமேந்திக்கண்ணெச்சில்கழித்திட் டாரே. They waved the lighted camphor and removed the blight of the eye. (நைட.) கண்ணெரிவு, v. noun. Smarting of the eyes from want of sleep or through intemperance. கண்ணெறிய, inf. To glance, க ண்ணாற்பார்க்க. 2. To cast libidinous glances, to look wistfully, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. கண்ணேணி, s. A bamboo ladder, மூங்கிலேணி. கண்ணேறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look intently or steadily on an object. 2. To look up straight forward, ஏறெடுத் துப்பார்க்க. கண்ணைக்காட்ட, inf. To indicate wishes by a glance. கண்ணைப்பிடுங்க, inf. To pluck out the eye. கண்ணைமூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க--கண் மூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க inf. To connive at. 2. To be indifferent about, to be careless. என்னைப்பாராமற்கண்மூடிக்கொண்டார். He does not look at me, he has closed his eyes on me. கண்ணொட்ட, inf. To be sleepy. எனக்குக்கண்ணொட்டிக்கொண்டுவருகிறது. I am sleepy. கண்ணொளி, s. The brightness of the eye, the light of the eyes, கண்ணிலிரு க்குமொளி. கண்ணோ--கண்ணோக்காடு--கண் ணோய்--கண்ணோவு--கண்வலி, s. Sore eyes, ophthalmia. கண்ணோக்க, inf. To look intently, gaze, to eye, see, look upon, பார்க்க. கண்ணோக்கு, v. noun. Gaze, glance, கண்பார்வை. கண்ணோட, inf. To run out--as the sight on an object of desire, to look at with desire, cast wistful or lustful glances, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. 2. To watch, look after, inspect, superintend, பார்வை யிட. 3. To examine cursorily--as a book, writing, &c., மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பார்க்க. 4. To be kind, benignant, gracious, to treat kindly, be indulgent, தயவாயிருக்க. 5. To be partial, to have the mind biased toward one, to yield to feelings of compassion, தாட்சிணியஞ்செய்ய.--Note. All the meanings have reference to sight as prompting to passion and action. உடையவன்கண்ணோடாப்பயிர், s. Growing corn not looked after by the owner. கண்ணோட்டம், s. A glance, a look, the scope of the sight, கடைக்கண்பா ர்வை. 2. Regard to persons, either in a good or bad sense, kindness as prompted at the moment, partiality, favoritism, glow of kind feelings toward a friend, reluctance to deny his request, &c., கடாட்சம். 3. Civility, complaisance, regard, மரியாதை. 4. Discerning by the eye, close examination, scrutiny, பார்வை யிடுகை. இவனவனிடத்திற்கண்ணோட்டம்வைத்தான். He was very kind to him. கண்திட்டம்--கண்மதிப்பு, s. Guess by the eye, or opinion from sight. கண்திட்டி--கண்திஷ்டி--கண்தீமை, s. The blight of the eye, திட்டிதோஷம். கண்திட்டிகழிக்க, inf. A glance. கண்பார்க்க, inf. To examine precious stones, elephants, horses, &c., for sale, பரீட்சிக்க. 2. To cast a benignant look on one, கடாட்சிக்க. 3. To pity or compassionate, இரங்க. கண்பிடி, s. [prov.] A small jackfruit or a small bunch of palmyra or other fruit attached to a larger one. கண்புகைச்சல், v. noun. A disease of the eye. ஓர்நோய். 2. Dimness of sight from age, disease, கண்மங்கல். கண்புதைக்க. inf. To cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்பொத்த. (p.) 2. To weaken or prevent the sight--as dust, &c. கண்பூத்தல், v. noun. Fascinating with the eye, கண்ணினாற்செய்யுமருட்டு. கண்மருந்து, s. Medicine for the eyes. 2. A collyrium for ornamenting the eyelids of females. கண்மலர், s. An ornament for the eyes of an idol, a gold or silver ornament to be placed over the eye of an idol and devoted to the temple, விக்கிரகங்க ட்கணியும்விழிமலர். கண்மறிக்காட்டல், v. noun. [prov.] Checking, forbidding, frowning on, or inviting by a signal of the eye. கண்மாயம், s. Ocular deception, illusion, sudden appearance and disappearance--as of a phantom, a thing stolen, &c., கண்ணுக்குத்தோன்றிமறைகை. கண்மின்ன, inf. To flash--as the eyes on fainting or by a blow. கண்மின்னியார்த்தல், v. noun. Growing dim as the eyes when one is dizzy. கண்முகிழ்க்க--கண்மூட, inf. To shut the eyes, cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்ணிமைசேர்க்க. 2. To become drowsy, go to sleep, தூங்க. 3. To die, சாவ. 4. To be careless, indifferent, unconcerned at any thing, கவலையில்லா திருக்க. கண்மூடிவிழிக்குமுன்னம். In less than a wink. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழிக்கிறவன். The five கன்னிகை, viz.: அகலிகை, the wife of கௌதமன்; துரோபதை, the wife of the பஞ்ச பாண்்டவர் or five brothers, sons of the king பாண்டு; சீதை, the wife of இராமன்; தாரை the wife of வாலி; and மண்டோதரி, the wife of இரா வணன். 3. Watching, caution, vigilance, காவல். 3. Warding off, guarding against, இரட்சிப்பு. 4. s. An amulet, இரட்சாபந்தன ம். 5. A bangle or bracelet,கைக்காப்பு. 6. A bandage tied round the arm, in token of a vow for hearing a sacred book read at a temple, keeping a feast, &c.-serving also as an amulet for the time, and as a monitory to practise abstinence and other required duties, to abstain from ceremonial pollutions, &c.-- also tied on the arms of a newly-married couple for four days, who are to keep apart for this time--also on the candidates for initiation by the Guru, மஞ்சள்நூ ற்காப்பு. 7. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. The arm-ring of the Guru, worn on the right arm as an amulet on special occasions, கோயிற்குருவணியுங்காப்பு. 9. A string tied round medical plants with incantations to avert evil effects in their use,மூலிகைக் குக்கட்டுங்காப்பு. 1. (p.) A surrounding wall, a fortification, a fence, a hedge, &c., மதில். 11.
