An elder, a superior, a person of dignity, respectability, master, &c., உயர்ந்தோன். 5. A king, அரசன். 6. A teacher, preceptor, உபாத்தியாயன். 7. The god Eyanar, ஐயனார். 8. Argha, அருகன். aiyō (p. 81) . An exclamation of wonder, pity, grief, pain, &c., அதிசயவிரக்கச்சொல். ஐயையோ. Alas, alas. ஐயோபாவமே. Ah! no, that would be sin. இப்படியேமுடிந்ததையோ. Alas, is it come to such an end as this? (ஸ்காந்.) கெட்டேனையையோ. Alas, alas, I am ruined.

oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

A poem celebrating the different stages in the infancy and childhood of a hero, comprized in ten parts: 1. காப்பு, putting on the armrings, with magical rites; 2. செங்கீரை, first voluntary movements of the child compared to the motion of herbs by the breeze; 3. தால், lulling the child in the cradle with songs; 4. சப்பாணி, the first clapping of its hands; 5. முத்தம், kissing; 6. வாரானை, extending its hands and calling to be taken; 7. அம்புலி, showing the moon to the infant; 8. சிறுபறை, amusement of a small drum; 9. சிற்றில், making (in play) little houses, or trampling on those made by girls; 1. சிறுதேர். drawing little carriages.--Note. When a heroine is described, instead of the last three, the following are substituted, eighth கழங்கு, a kind of play with brass balls; ninth அம்மானை, a curious play with balls; tenth, ஊசல், swinging. There are two more compositions, bearing this title, one by குமரகுருபரதேசிகர், in praise of மீனாட்சி, the goddess at Madura; the other, by மார்க்கசகாயதேவர், of the childhood of Skanda. பிள்ளைத்தாய்ச்சி, s.
