alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. Helps, aids useful to the accomplishing of a purpose either as persons or things, serviceableness, usefulness, beneficialness, உதவி. Wils. p. 157. UPAYOGA. உபயோகப்பட, inf. To be serviceable, to turn to account, உதவியாக. உபயோகப்படுத்த, inf. To render fit for, to adapt, உதவியாக்க. உபயோகி, s. A fit or helpful person, உதவியானவன். Wils. p. 157. UPAYOGIN. உபயோகிக்க, inf. upāyam (p. 62) s. Means, contrivance, expedient, device, good or bad, skill in accomplishing an object, சூழ்ச்சி. 2. Stratagem, artifice, craft, shift, art, cunning, shuffling, intrigue, தந்திரம். 3. The means for bringing an enemy to terms, of which four are enumerated, viz.: 1. சாமம், conciliatory measures. 2. பேதம், sowing dissension. 3. தானம், gifts, presents. 4. தண் டம், chastisement, punishment (by war), அரசர்க்குரியவுபாயம். 4. [vul.] Smallness, சொ ற்பம். Wils. p. 16. UPAYA. உபாயக்காரன்--உபாயி, s. An artful person, a schemer, contriver, தந்திரக்காரன். உபாயஞ்சூழ, inf. To contrive, scheme. உபாயஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To give counsel. உபாயதந்திரம், s. Devices, craftiness, subtility. உபாயமானவிளையாட்டு, s. Artful cheating in play. உபாயம்பண்ண, inf. To adopt stratagems, to contrive, employ address, use means. உபாயவிலக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Artfully endeavoring to prevent an act, by representing the evil which will happen to one's self--as when a wife dissuades her husband from leaving her by declaring that, in case he does, she must die, ஓரலங்காரம். உபாயோபாயம், s. Various means or artifices. 2. Cunning for cunning in retaliation, &c. மோட்சம்பெறுமுபாயம்--மோட் சோபாயம், s. Means for obtaining eternal bliss. 52)
சமயம்
camayam (p. 162) s. A convenient, suitable or proper time; leisure, convenience, opportunity, தருணம். 2. Time, season, occasion, juncture of time; emergency, extremity, காலம். 3. Any religious persuasion, faith or system, மார்க்கம். (c.) W. p. 894. SAMAYA. --Note.. There are twelve principal religious systems, of which six are approved and six rejected by the Saiva sect. 1. உட் சமையம், or the six systems considered orthodox by the Saivas are. 1. வைரவம், making Bhairava supreme. 2. வாமம், regarding the female principle in nature, as the primeval form of deity, and teaching the worship of the generative female organ. 3. காளாமுகம், similar to the வாமம். 4. மாவிரதம், teaching that the deity is a pure spirit. 5. பாசுபதம், similar to மாவிரதம். 6. சைவம், Saivism, which teaches that the deity is both spirit and matter; assuming forms for accomplishing his purposes. II. புறச்சமயம், or the six heterodox systems; viz.:-- 1. உலகாயதம். A species of Atheism regarding sensual gratifications as the chief good, as taught by the atheistical school of Charvaka. 2. புத் தம். Bhuddism, which rejects the notion of a Supreme being, maintains that all material existences proceed from a fortuitous combination of the four primitive elements, (earth, water, fire, and air,) and that mental phenomena are the mere results of organization. It regards Bhudd as a deified teacher and object of worship. 3. சமணம். The Jaina system which is a modification of Bhuddism, and regards Argha as the deified preceptor and object of worship. 4. மீமாஞ்சை. A system that regards Brahm as the soul of the universe. 5. பாஞ்சாரத்திரம். A system taught by Vishnu, during five successive nights. 6. பாட்டாசாரியம். The system of Battacharya whose followers regard the Vedas as god, and consider that virtuous actions of themselves result in felicity. III. Other systems derived from these twelve or in some respects similar to them are very numerous, some of them are கபாலம், சவுத்திராந்திகம், யோகசாரணம், ஆத்துமிகம், வைபாடிகம், நிகண்டவா தம், நையாயிகம், வைசேஷிகம், பதஞ்சலியம், சாங்கியம், சித்தாந்தம், வேதாந்தம், &c. The six orthodox systems among the Vaishnuvas are 1. யாதவம், that of Yádava Misra. 2. மாயாவாதம், that by Sankarachárya. 3. இரணியகர்ப்பம், that by Hiranyagarbha. 4. இராமானுசீயம், that by Rámánuja. 5. பாஸ்கரம், that by Bhaskara. 6. தத்துவவாதம், that by Mádhavácharya. சமயகருமம், s. Rites and duties of religion, மார்க்காசாரம். சமயகாரியம், s. Questions, matters, &c., of theology; religious concerns, subjects, &c. சமயக்கட்டு, s. Religious obligation. See கட்டு. சமயக்கொள்கை--சமயக்கோட்பாடு, s. Religious opinions, tenets, &c. சமயசாத்திரம், s. The theology of a sect. 2. Religious writings or shastras. சமயதீட்சை, s. The ceremony of initiating a disciple in the mantras, &c., peculiar to the sect. See தீட்சை. சமயத்தார், s. The followers of a religious system. சமயங்கடக்க, inf. To transcend all religions--as the supreme being. (p.) சமயநிந்தை, s. Scoffing at religion, profaneness, blasphemy, &c. சமயநிலை, s. The commands, tenets of a religion. 2. Religion as observed, believed, practised, &c., by its professors. சமயநூல், s. The religious writings of a sect. சமயப்பற்று, v. noun. Attachment to a religion. சமயபத்தி, s. Religious devotedness to a creed. சமயபேதம், s. Heresy, heterodoxy. 2. Diversity of religions. 3. Schism. 4. (c.) Unseasonableness. சமயபேதி, s. A heretic. 2. Schismatic. 3. One of another religion. சமயப்போலி, s. A spurious system of religion. (p.) சமயப்போக்கு, v. noun. The substance, scope, &c., of a religion. (Little used.) சமயமதம், s. Bigotry, enthusiasm, conceit in religion. சமயமதங்கொண்டாட, inf. To be enthusiastic, to act the bigot. சமயமானம், s. A natural regard to one's own religion. (c.) 2. (Rott.) Constancy or firmness in a religion. சந்நியாசிக்குஞ் சாதிமானஞ் சமயமானம்விடாது.... The ascetic who has relinquished every thing will not relinquish his caste or sect. சமயவாதம், s. Religious controversy. சமயவாதி, s. A disputant for religion. 2. A professor of religion. சமயாசாரம், s. The rites and ceremonies, of a religion according to a prescribed institute. 2. Religious practice, observance of rites. (c.) சமயாதீதன், s. The supreme Being-as transcending all religions, சமயங்கடந்த கடவுள். (p.) சமயி, s. [com. சமயத்தான்.] A religionist, a sectarian, the follower of any religion, sect, &c., a sectary. (p.) சமயமாயிருக்கையில், [adverbially.] At a particular juncture, in an emergency. சமயங்கடத்த, inf. [prov.] To while away time, to loiter. சமயங்கிடைக்க, inf. To obtain an opportunity. (c.) சமயங்கெட்டவேளை, s. An unseasonable time. (Limited usage.) சமயத்துக்குதவ, inf. To help in an emergency. சமயம்பார்க்க--சமயந்தேட, inf. To watch an opportunity. சமயாசமயம், s. Urgent or pressing occasion, unfavorable opportunity. (c.) தற்சமயம், s. The very juncture or moment. 2. A special opportunity. நற்சமயம், s. A good opportunity. சமயந்தப்பிவந்தான். He came unseasonably. சமயத்திலே கையைவிரித்தான். He refrained from helping in time of need. 2) *

tṭṭu (p. 222) v. noun. Knock, tap, stroke, pat, rap, தட்டுகை. 2. Breaking, knocking, patting, தட்டல். 3. Scarcity, straits, extremity, குறை. 4. Drawing near, கிட்டுகை. 5. Warding off, averting, நீக்கல். 6. Evasion, prevarication, புரட்டு. 7. A dexterous performance or man&oe;uvre, உபாயம். 8. Stalk of grain, பயிர்த்தாள். 9. Striking against, collision, முட்டுதல். 1. Frustration, thwarting, விலக்கு. 11. Opposition, check, impediment, தடை. 12. Getting money by deception, swindling, பித்தலாட்டம். 13. (fig.) A cunning remark, a repartee, an insinuation, சூத்திரப்பேச்சு. 14. Patting, மெய்ப்பரிசத் திலொன்று. 15. Publishing by striking a gong, &c., தாளம்போடல்.--Note. In many of these meanings the word is used in cant. (c.) அவனுக்குநல்லதட்டு. He had a good profit. சாப்பாட்டுக்குஇப்போதுஅதிகதட்டு. Now a days, I am much straitened for food. ஒருதட்டுத்தட்டிவிட்டான். [prov.] தட்டிலும்வீச்சிலுங்காரியம்பார்க்க. To make a display and shift the expense on others. தட்டிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க. To support one's self at another's expense. தட்டுக்காரன், s. A rogue, a cunning fellow. 2. An evader, a prevaricator. தட்டுத்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap. 2. To evade. 3. To thwart or frustrate. 4. To act dexterously. தட்டுத்தடவல், v. noun. As தட்டல்த டவல், which see. தட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be destitute, to be in straits. செலவுக்குத்தட்டாயிருக்கிறது. We are in want of the means of subsistence. தட்டுக்கொட்டு, v. noun. [prov.] Exterior show without accomplishing one's wish. 2. A bauble, gew-gaw. 3. Living by stratagem, &c. தட்டுத்தடக்கு, v. noun. Hesitation, impediment. தட்டுத்தடக்கில்லாமல்வாசிக்கிறான். He reads fluently. தட்டுத்தாவரம், s. [prov.] Resort, resource, refuge, புகலிடம். தட்டுப்பட, inf. To be hit, to be struck--commonly accidentally. 2. To be tapped or beaten as a drum, cymbal, &c. 3. To lack, to be wanting--as stores, money, rain, &c. 4. To be felt by contact. 5. To be stopped in progress, as a vehicle, a performer, &c., To be understood. அவன் என்கண்ணுக்குத்தட்டுப்படவில்லை. I have not seen him any where. இப்போதுதான்எனக்குத்தட்டுப்பட்டது. Now I understand it. தட்டுண்டுபோக, inf. To be beaten off, scattered. 2. To be all threshed out--as rape-seed. 3. To be thwarted, to fail, as an expected good. 4. To be upset, overturned. 5. To exchange commodities clandestinely, and fraudulently. தட்டுக்கெட, inf. To be greatly alarmed, to stand aghast. 2. To be in extremity, in destitution. 3. To suffer loss. தட்டுக்கெட்டுத்தடுமாறிப்போனான். He was greatly surprized. தட்டுக்கெட்டசமாசாரம், s. A complicated business. தட்டுக்கேடு, v. noun. turuvm (p. 248) s. Immutability, steadiness, stability, அசையாமை. 2. The north polestar, துருவநட்சத்திரம். 3. The pole of any great circle of the sphere, particularly either of the celestial poles, பூச்சக்கரத்தின் முனை. 4. A measure in music. (See சத்ததா ளம்.) 5. Distance of a planet from the beginning of the siderial Zodiac, கிரகபுடம். 6. One of the twenty-seven astrological yogas, நித்தியயோகத்தொன்று. W. p. 448. D'HRUVA. 7. Longitude of aphelion or apogee. 8. Epoch longitude of a planet, especially in combination with மூலம், as மூலத்துருவம். 9. To construct a rule for forming mystical or magical circles, &c. 4. (fig.) To devise means or expedients, உபாயந்தேட. துருவாக்ஷரம்--துருவாட்சரம், s. [in Hindu astron.] The longitudinal distance of the sun, or a planet, from the first of Aries, at the end of synodic periods, as found in சோத்தியவாக்கியம். துருவன், s. [in mythol.] Dhruva the grandson of மனு and son of உத்தானபாதன். 2. The pole star, personified by the demigod Dhruva, துருவநட்சத்திரம். 3. One of the eight demigods, அஷ்டவசுக்கிளிலொ ருவன், W. p. 448. D'HRUVA. துருவச்சக்கரம், s. The wheel of துருவன், the pole star, with which he turns the heavens causing the diurnal motions, சிஞ்சுமாரசக்கரம். துருவமண்டலம்-துருவமதம், s. pañca (p. 290) --பஞ்சம், adj. Five-fold, ஐந்து. W. p. 493. PANCHAT or PANCHAN. பஞ்சகச்சஞ்சொருக, inf. To tuck up the cloth in five ways. See சொருகு, v. பஞ்சகச்சாயம், s. Five kinds of cakes. பஞ்சகதி, s. The five paces of the horse. See துரககதி. பஞ்சகந்தம், s. The five aromatics. See கந்தம். பஞ்சகம், s. Any thing of five parts. பஞ்சகம்மாளர், s. [also பஞ்சாளர்.] The five castes of mechanics. See கம்மாளர், under கம். பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள், s. The five deities, or forms of deity performing operations for the benefit of souls. 1. பிரமா, creator, or evolver of the universe; 2. விட்டுணு, preserver, who furnishes each soul with its allotted portion of jois, and sorrows, as the results of former actions; 3. உருத்திரன், destroyer, reducing souls and worlds to their primitive elements; 4. மகேசுரன், obscurer, darkening the understanding, that the soul may act, and work off its accumulation of moral evil, so as to become ripe for salvation; 5. சதாசிவன், enlightener of illuminator, who imparts divine grace, and prepares the soul for emancipation, and union with the deity. See பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், under கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகலாத்தானங்கள், s. The five parts of the body touched by the gurus in giving தீட்சை. பஞ்சகலை, s. The five developments of the soul in its beatification are; நிவிர்தி, பிரதிஷ்டை, வித்தை, சாந்தி,சாந்தியாதீதம். (தத்துவ.) பஞ்சகல்யாணி, s. A horse whose feet and forehead are white. See கலியாணி. பஞ்சகன்னியர், s. The five famous women worshipped by females, as able to confer benefits. See கன்னிகை. பஞ்சகாவியம், s. The five ancient classic poems. See காவியம். பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations performed by five பஞசகர்த்தாக்கள். See ஐந் தொழில், கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகுரோசஎல்லை, s. The distance of five calls of குரோசம், around Benares, within which no foreign religionist, or other unclean person, should come. பஞ்சகோசம், s. The five sheaths of the soul. See கோசம். பஞ்சகோணம், s. A pentagon. See ஐங்கோணம். பஞ்சகோலம், s. The mixture of five spices, சுக்கு, திப்பிலி, திப்பிலிமூலம், செவ்வியம், and சித்திரமூலம்; [ex Kola. pepper.] பஞ்சகௌடம், s. The five divisions of Bengal or the கௌடம் country. See கௌடம். பஞ்சகௌவியம், The five products of the cow, used in ceremonial purifications, viz. milk, curds, ghee, urine and dung, ஆனிடத்தைந்து. பஞ்சகௌவியம்கூட்டித்தெளித்தல். Mixing the five ingredients and sprinkling the the floor, &c.--Note. The same mixture is administered to the woman after child-birth; also sprinkled on the child at the time of purification. பஞ்சகொ?வியப்பிராசினம். Eating the above compound as a purification. பஞ்சசத்தி, s. The five saktis. See சத்தி. பஞ்சசயனம், s. The five kinds of beds. See சயனம். பஞ்சசிகை, s. The five parts of the body which the Shastras forbid to be shaved; the crown of the head, the two eye-brows, and the arms from the elbow to the hand. பஞ்சசுத்தி, s. The five purifications. See சுத்தி. பஞ்சணை, s. [com. for பஞ்சசயனம்.] The five kinds of mattresses, filled with silk-cotton, red cotton, white cotton, hair, or feathers. 2. See பஞ்சு. பஞ்சதந்திரம், s. [in politics.] The five means of accomplishing one's object; 1. மித்திரபேதம், sowing discord among friends; 2. சுகிர்லாபம், associating with equals; 3. சக்திவிக்கிரகம், associating with a foe and ruining him; 4. அர்த்தநாசம், spending one's property to gain an object; 5. அசம்பிரெட்சியம், acting without inquiry, examination, &c. பஞ்சதந்திரக்கதை, s. Panchatantra. பஞ்சதம்--பஞ்சதை, s. Death, dissolution og the five elements of whose aggregate the body consists, மரணம். பஞ்சதரு--பஞ்சதாரு, s. The five trees in Swerga. A tortoise, ஆமை. W. p. 493. PANCHANAKHA. பஞ்சநகக்கூர்மையோன், s. A tortoise as having five divisions in its claws. பஞ்சநதி, s. The Punjaub having five rivers, as famous for sacred bathing. பஞ்சநிம்பம், s. The five parts of the Neem, or Margosa tree; the flowers fruit, leaves, bark and root; [ex நிம்பம், margosa.] பஞ்சபட்சி, s. The five birds for augury. See பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், under காதல். --The letters, அ, இ, உ, எ, and ஒ, are applied to the birds, and the following accidents, உண்டி, feeding, நடை, walking, அரசு, governing, தூக்கம், sleeping, and சாவு; dying. பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், s. A treatise on augury. பஞ்சபட்சிவேளை, s. Augury from the eating, sleeping, walking, governing and dying of the five birds, between the full and the new moon. 2. An auspicious hour, ascertained by augury. பஞ்சபர்வங்கள், s. Five religious ceremonial days in each fortnight. பஞ்சபாணம், s. [alsoஐங்கணை.] The five arrows of Kama consisting of five kinds of flowers; வனசம், lotus; 2. குதம், mango; 3. அசோகு, ashoka; 4. முல்லை, jasmine; 5. நீலம், blue water lily. பஞ்சபாணன், s. Kama, the god of love, as armed with the five arrows, காமன். பஞ்சபாணாவஸ்தை, s. The five effects produced by the arrows of Kama; சுப்பிரயோகம், thinking and talking of the person loved; 2. விப்பிரயோகம், sighing and lamenting; 3. சோகம், heat or feverishness, nausea and languishing; 4. மோகம், weeping and bewliderment of the faculties; 5. மரணம், death or suspension of the natural powers. பஞ்சபாணி, s. Parvati, as armed with five arrows, பார்வதி. பஞ்சபாண்டவர், s. [pl.] The five Pandavas. See ஐவர். பஞ்சபாதகம், s. (சது) --Some Omit காமம், and others, குருநிந்தை. and give பொய், instead. பஞ்சபாதகன், s. One guilty of the five heinous. 2. One very oppers sive, and unjust, as பஞ்சமாபாதகன். பஞ்சபாத்திரம், s. A kind of vessel of five plates collectively, or made of five metals, used by advanced religionists, to hold water for purification, பஞ்சலோக பாத்திரம். 2. (R.) The centre piece of this vessel. பஞ்சபூதம், s. The five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and ether. பஞ்சபூதஅணு, s. The five atomic bases. See பரமாணு under பரமம். பஞ்சப்பிராணன், s. The five vital airs constituting life--commonly reckoned ten. See வாயு. பஞ்சமகதி, s. Final bliss, liberation from births and absorption in the deity --there being four other states, மோட்சம். பஞ்சமகாயக்கியம், s. The five special sacrifices or oblations. See யாகம்; [ex மகா et யக்கியம்.] பஞ்சமம், s. One of the five musical modes, ஓர்பண். 2. One of the seven musical notes, சத்தசுரத்தொன்று. W. p. 493. PANCHAMA. See நிஷாதம். பஞ்சமலம், s. The five evils attaching to the soul, ஐவகைமலம். பஞ்சமன், s. A low caste man; (lit.) a fifth man, one not belonging to either of the first four castes, ஐந்தாஞ்சாதியான். பஞ்சமாசத்தம், s. The five kinds of musical sounds; also the sources of the sounds. See கருவி. பஞ்சமாபாதகம், s. The five heinous sins, as பஞ்சபாதகம். பஞ்சமாபாதகன், s. A grievous sinner, one quilty of the five heinous crimes, பஞ்சபாதகன். 2. A very oppressive, unjust of cruel man, துஷ்டன். (c) பஞ்சமி, s. The fifth day of the moon, either in her increase or decrease, ஐந் தாந்திதி. 2. The last five of the lunar days; a death occurring on the first of these is portentous of death to five others in the house, or it vicinity; on the second day to four others, &., on which account, if the death occur on the first day, the corpse is carried out through a hole made in the wall, the house is vacated for months, and various ceremonies are performed to appease the incensed goddess, அவிட்டமுத லைந்துநாள், commonly தனிஷ்டபஞ்சமி. 3. The goddess Durga, துற்கை, அவிட்டபஞ்சமி. The last five lunar days, as பஞ்சமி, 2. பஞ்சமிதேவதை--பஞ்சமிப்பேய், s. [prov.] The tutelary deity of the five unlucky days. பஞ்சமியிற்செத்தவீடு, s. A house forsaken in consequence of a death occurring in one of the பஞ்சமி days. 2. பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five pointed weapon; [ex முகம், et அஸ்திரம்.] பஞ்சமூலம், s. Five kinds of medicinal roots, of which there are two classes. See மூலம். பஞ்சமூலகஷாயம், s. A decoction of five different medicinal roots. See கஷாயம். பஞ்சயாகம்--பஞ்சவெச்சம், s. The five daily sacraments or oblations, as பஞ்சமாகாயக்கியம். See எச்சம். பஞ்சரத்தினம், s. Five precious stones. 2. The name of a treatise, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். பஞ்சராசிகம், s. Rule of five, ஐந்தொ கைவினா. பஞ்சராத்திரம், s. A sect of Vaishnuvas. பஞ்சலக்கணம், s. The five parts of Grammar. See இலக்கணம். பஞ்சலிங்கம், s. The five kinds of Linga, represented by the five elements. See இலிங்கம். பஞ்சலோகம், s. The five simple metals. See உலோகம். 2. A mixture of the five, ஐவகைலோகக்கலப்பு. பஞ்சவர்தூதன், s. Vishnu, once employed as a messenger for the five பஞ்ச வர், or Pandavas, விஷ்ணு. பஞ்சவர்னம், s. The five colors; white, black, red, yellow and green. பஞ்சவர்னக்கிளி, s. The finest species of parrot. See கிளி. பஞ்சவாசம், s. The five aromatics or spices. See பஞ்சகந்தம். பஞ்சவிஷயம், s. The object of the five senses; the whole material world See புலன். பஞ்சாக்கரம்--பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. The five lettered incantation, சிவாயநம, which see. பஞ்சாக்கினி, s. The five fires amidst which the devotee performs austerities. one toward each quarter and the sun over-head; or, according to others, a fire in the centre. 2. The five mystic fires in the body, given as இராகம், கோபம், காமம், சடம், தீபனம். Compare தீ. பஞ்சாக்கினிமத்தி, s. The centre of an area in which are five fires, as a place for the performance of austerities. பஞ்சாங்கம், s. An almanac embracing five things; lunar days or phases of the moon, திதி; solar days or week, வாரம்; periods of the asterisms, நட்சத்திரம்; the yogas, யோகம்; and karnas, கரணம்; [ex அங்கம், member, அ becoming ஆ in combination.] பஞ்சாங்கங்கணித்தல்--பஞ்சாங்கம் எ ண்ணுதல், v. noun. Calculating an almanac. பஞ்சாங்கஞ்சொல்லுதல், v. noun. Notifying special days and periods, with the ceremonies to be performed, as the household priest to princes. பஞ்சாங்கதெண்டன்-பஞ்சாங்கநமஸ்கா ரம், s. Land held free by such a brahman for his duty. பஞ்சாங்கவாக்கியம், s. [in Hindu astron.] The table of the moon's given longitudes from apogee and daily motions for two hundred and fortyeight days. பஞ்சாங்குலம், s. The castor-plant whose leaves resemble the five digits, ஆமணக்கு; [ex அங்குலம்.] பஞ்சாசயம், s. The five receptacles in the body are: ஆமாசயம், the stomach; 2. இரத்தசயம், the heart; 3. கர்ப்பாசயம், the womb; 4. சலாசயம், the bladder; 5. மலாசயம், rectum. பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. As பஞ்சாக்கரம். பஞ்சாமிர்தம்--பஞ்சாமுதம், s. The five delicacies; milk, curds, ghee, sugar, and honey. (in Wils.) 2. (R.) A mixture of plantains, cocoa kernel, milk, sugar and honey, used in anointing an idol. பஞ்சாமிலம், s. An aggregate of the five acids, jujube. இலந்தை; pomegranate, மாதளை; sorrel, புளியாரை; emblica, நெல்லி, citron, எலுமிச்சை; [ex ஆமிலம்.] W. p. 494. PANCHAMILA. பஞ்சாயுதம், s. The five weapons of Vishnu; the discus, club, chank, bow and sword. 2. [prov.] A gold ornament worn by children or women, on the neck with the tali, bearing in relief the five weapons of Vishnu. It is of two kinds, அரசிலைப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one made in the form of fig-leaf; வட்டப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one in a circular form, ஓராபரணம். பஞ்சாயுதபாணி-பஞ்சாயுதன், s. Vishnu, as bearing the five weapons. பஞ்சார்க்கம், s. Five phenomena of the heavens constantly recurring in connexion with the planets; regarded as exerting planetary influence of an unpropitious character taken into account in astrological computation, viz.: 1. தூமம், smaoke; 2. விதிபாதம், one of twentyseven astrological yogas; 3. வில் or இந்திரவில், rainbow; 4. பரிவேடம், halo; 5. சேது, the descending node. பஞ்சார்க்கதோஷம், s. [in astrol.] Evil influence or result of any of the five அர்்க்கம். பஞ்சாவத்தை, s. The five states of the human intellect. See அவத்தை. பஞ்சாளர், s. [pl.] Mechanics--as பஞ் சகம்மாளர். பஞ்சானனன், s. Siva the five-faced, சிவன்; [ex ஆனனம்.] பஞ்சீகரணம், s. viṉai (p. 398) s. Act, action, deed, work, தொ ழில். 2. Accumulation of moral actions, the results of deeds in former births, ஊழ். 3. An evil deed, mischief, the actions or intentions of enemies, தீவினை. 4. Design, thought, counsel, கருத்து. 5. War, போர். 6. [in gram.] A verb.--Note. Of verbs are தன்வினை, பிறவினை.முற்றுவினை, எச்சவினை, தெரிநிலை வினை, குறிப்புவினை, உடன்பாட்டுவினை or விதிவினை. மறைவினை or எதிர்மறைவினை, செய்வினை, செயப்பாட் டுவினை, செயப்படுபொருள்குன்றியவினை, செயப்படு பொருள்குன்றாதவினை; which see. அது அதிக விலைசெய்யும்போலேயிருக்கிறது.
