It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. To increase--as flesh in a person who has been wasted by disease, to increase by slow degrees, மெலி ந்தவுடல்தேற. (c.) தொட்டளைத்தூறுமணற்கேணிமாந்தர்க்குக் கற்றனைத் தூறுமறிவு. The more you dig in a sandy soil the more does the water spring forth; so the more you apply to science the more your knowledge will increase. கற்கவூறுங்கலைஞானம். By learning, knowledge is increased. இறைத்தகிணறூறும்இறையாக்கிணறூறாது. Water issues from the springs of a well constantly drawn, but from one not drawn, it ceases to do so; i. e. the more one gives, the more will be given to him. ஊறணி, s. A fountain, a spring of water, ஊற்று. 2. [prov.] Good, moist land where water oozes out, கசிவுநிலம். 3. Wet, marshy, or brackish lands, சேற்று நிலம். 4. Income, property stored up, வருவாய் (probably a corruption of ஊ றுநீர்). ஊறவூறக்கறக்க, inf. To milk the cow as fast as the milk forms. 2. To obtain money from a person as fast as he gets it. ஊறவைக்க, inf. To steep, pickle, imbue, macerate. ஊறுகாய், s. Pickled fruits, அடை காய். ஊறுநீர், s. Spring-water, ஊற்று நீர். ஊறுபுண், s. A healing wound, ஆறிவரும்புண். தேனூறுமலர், s. The honey forming flower. ஊறல், v. noun. Oozing as from a sore, &c., percolation, discharge, issue, ஊறுகை. 2. s. A small spring, springwater, ஊற்று. 3. A tincture, infusion, &c., மருந்திலூறல். 4. A taint, or faint mixture of another metal, பஞ்சலோகக்கலப்பு. 5. One's income acquisition, property amassed, &c., வருவாய். 6. A slight degree of verdigris, களிம்பு. ஊறற்பாக்கு, s. Betel-put soaked to render it fit for use. ஊறற்றாள், s. Sinking paper.

eṇ (p. 73) s. Thought, imagination, conjecture, intention, எண்ணிக்கை. 2. Deliberation, counsel, care, விசாரம். 3. Number, enumeration, calculation, computation, இலக்கம். 4. Astronomical computation, astronomy, சோதிடநூல். 5. Estimation, esteem, honor respect, worthiness, மதிப்பு. 6. Strength, வலி. 7. Total measure, வரை யறை.--Note. Seven is regarded as the most lucky number, after which five and the other odd numbers have precedence. 8. Lowness in state or rank, inferiority, pitiableness, or despicableness, எளிமை. 9. Easiness of accomplishment, acquisition, access, &c.; what is not difficult, இலேசு. 1. A kind of rape, the plant or seed, எள்ளு. (p.) எண்ணுக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. 2. That which is incomprehensible. எண்ணுமெழுத்துங்கண்ணெனத்தகும். Arithmetic and grammar may be regarded as eyes. எண்ணெழுத்திகழேல். Think not lightly of numbers and letters, do not neglect reading and cyphering. எண்பொருளவாகச்செலச்சொல்லி. Communicating your thoughts in language easy to be understood-எண்சாத்திரம், s. The science of numbers, arithmetic, mathematics, கணி தம். எண்கூட்டல், s. Addition. எண்சுவடி, s. The multiplication table either of whole numbers, or fractions, ஓர்சுவடி. 2. An account book, கணக்குப்புஸ்தகம். எண்செய்யுள், s. A poem celebrating the country, town, names, titles, &c. of a hero. It consists of any number of verses from ten to onethousand inclusive. and is named from the number of verses it contains, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். எண்ணர், s. Astronomers, கணிதர். ஏரணங்காணென்பரெண்ணர். Astronomers will call this a treatise of arithmetic. (கோவை.) எண்ணிட, inf. To count, reckon, calculate. எண்ணிடஇடமொன்றியின்றியெங்கணும்நிறைந்த தன்றே. (The army) crowded the whole field so that there was hardly any room left--not so much as even to hold a rape seed. எண்ணில்கண்ணுடையோன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Budha, புத்தன். (p.) எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time, அளவில்லாதகாலம். (சத.) எண்ணிறக்க, inf. To exceed computation, conception, அளவிறக்க. எண்ணின்வகுப்பு, s. The tamil enumeration table which consists of thirty-six digits; viz.: 1. ஏகம், units. 2. தசம், tens. 3. சதம், hundreds. 4. சகஸ் திரம், thousands. 5. அயுதம், ten thousands. 6. நியுதம், hundred thousands, &c. எண்ணும்மை, s. A numerical connective. See உம். எண்ணுறுத்த, inf. To prove, establish, உறுதிப்படுத்த. 38)

eṇmai (p. 73) s. [a contr. of எளிமை.] Lowness of rank, inferiority, despicbleness, poverty. 2. Pitiableness, a state deserving of, or calling forth pity, பரிதாப நிலை. 3. Easiness of acquisition, access, accomplishment, facility, இலேசு. (p.) உவனைப்பொருவதுவுமெண்மையதுவோ. Is it easy to contend with him in battle? (ஸ்காந்.) எண்மையன், s. An easy, or docile person, one easy to manage, இலேசான வன். 2. One of no importance, or weight of character, of no ability, &c., எளியவன். 43) *

eḷimai (p. 75) s. Despicableness, meanness, lowness of rank, circumstances, character, &c., நீசத்துவம். 2. Pitiableness, exciting compassion, இரங்கப்படத்தக்கதன்மை. 3. Weakness, பலவீனம். 4. Easiness, facility, being easy to effect, acquire, attain, endure, to be understood; easiness of access, எளிது. 5. Solitariness, தனிமை; [ex எள்.] எளிஞர்--எளியர்--எளியார்--எளி யோர், s. The low, mean, destitute, the poor, தரித்திரர். எளிதரவு, [impr. for. எளிவரல்.] Indigence, poverty, despicableness, cringing, தரித்திரம். 2. Lowness, humility, தாழ்மை. எளிது, s. [impr. எளிசு.] Being easy of execution, acquisition, &c., இலேசு. எளிதானகாரியம், s. A trifling thing, a trivial affair, a thing easily understood. எளியகுடி, s. Poor, destitute inhabitants. 2. A family low in rank. எளியகொடை, s. Unworthy gifts, presents unsuitable to the persons to whom they are made. எளியது, s. That which is despicable, low trifling, &c., எளிமையானது. எளியவன்--எளியன், s. A man of low caste, a person poor, destitute, mean, &c. எளியவன்பெண்டாட்டியெல்லாருக்கும்மைத்துன ச்சி. The wife of a poor man is free of access to every body. எளியாரைவலியார்கேட்பின் வலியாரைத்தெய்வங் கேட்கும். If the powerful oppress the weak, the deity will require it of them. எளியவிலை, s. Low price. எளியவேலை, s. Low, menial work. கைக்கெளியது, s. That which is portable, small, easily carried, stolen, secreted, managed, as a child, &c. தாளையேதரமறிகிலாதெமக்கெளிதருசிவப்பிரகாசன். The guru (Sivaprakasa) who readily admits us to his feet; i. e., he is ready to grant our desires (சத.) 24)

To make signs with the hand, to beckon, &c. 2. To make gestures with the hands--as dancing girls. 3. To give a bribe, a present, something to please one, &c. 4. To make a pretence of giving; to give a little only. 5. To make signs with the back of the hand for one to go. கை. 8. The ear, or organ of hearing, காது. 9. The hearing or trial of a case, வழக்குக்கேட்கை. 1. Report, rumor, பேச்சு. 11. Tradition, பாரம்பரியம். கேள்வியற்றுக்கிடக்கிறது. There is no administration of justice; no justice or satisfaction can be obtained. கேள்விமுயல். Be prompt in receiving information. கேள்விகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to listen--not elegant. கேள்விமறுமொழி, s. Question and answer; a catechism. கேள்விக்கடுதாசி, s. [prov.] Written application to a court of justice. 2. Tenders or proposals in writing. கேள்விக்காரர், s. [prov.] Bidders at an auction. 2. Persons who tender proposals at a purchase. 3. Candidates or applicants for an office. கேள்விச்செவி, s. Listening credulously to hear-say reports. கேள்விச்செவியன் ஊரைக்கெடுத்தான். The credulous ruler ruined the country. கேள்விப்பத்திரம், s. [prov.] A request, application, petition, &c., in writing. கேள்விகேட்பாடு, s. [local.] Judicial inquiry, investigation. கேள்வியற்றஊர்--கேள்வியில்லாதஊர், s. A town without justice. கேள்விமுறை, s. Inquiry into; superintendence, control, management. கேள்வியாக, inf. To be heard, to be reported; to reach the ears--as news; to be heard in court. கை கைகாட்டு, v. noun. Gesture with the hand, as in dancing; beck of the hand. கைகுவிக்க, inf. To hold up the hands joined, in worship, &c. See குவி. கைகுறண்ட, inf. To have the hands bent by spasms. 2. To be cramped in the hands. 3. To be stingy, parsimonious, close-fisted. கைகூச, inf. To be backward in using the hand. See கூசு. கைகூட, inf. To come to hand, be obtained, to succeed, அனுகூலப்பட. அவன்செய்வதெல்லாம் அவனுக்குக் கைகூடும். All that he does prospers. கைகூப்பு, v. noun. Raising the joined hands in worship--as கூப்பு. 2. The distance from the tip of the fingers to the feet, when the hands are joined and raised above the head. கைகொட்ட, inf. To clap the hands. கைகோக்க, inf. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)
