upāyam (p. 62) s. Means, contrivance, expedient, device, good or bad, skill in accomplishing an object, சூழ்ச்சி. 2. Stratagem, artifice, craft, shift, art, cunning, shuffling, intrigue, தந்திரம். 3. The means for bringing an enemy to terms, of which four are enumerated, viz.: 1. சாமம், conciliatory measures. 2. பேதம், sowing dissension. 3. தானம், gifts, presents. 4. தண் டம், chastisement, punishment (by war), அரசர்க்குரியவுபாயம். 4. [in rhetoric.] Artfully endeavoring to prevent an act, by representing the evil which will happen to one's self--as when a wife dissuades her husband from leaving her by declaring that, in case he does, she must die, ஓரலங்காரம். உபாயோபாயம், s. Various means or artifices. 2. Cunning for cunning in retaliation, &c. மோட்சம்பெறுமுபாயம்--மோட் சோபாயம், s. Means for obtaining eternal bliss. 52)

oṟṟu (p. 84) s. A mute consonant, மெய் யெழுத்து. 2. Spying, espionage, searching, agency, வேவு. 3. A messenger, an agent or emissary, தூதன். 4. A spy, வேவுகாரன். ஒற்றர், s. Spies, searchers, emissaries, வேவுகாரர். 2. The confidential agents or messengers of a prince whether employed in his own dominion or another's, for a good or bad purpose, தூதர். ஒற்றராலக்கணத்தேயுணர்ந்து. Being acquainted (with the counsels of the enemy) at that time through the spies. (பார.) கன்னலொன்றளவைதன்னிற்கந்தவேளொற்றன்யா க்கை சின்னபின்னங்களாகச்செய்குவன். I would tear to pieces the body of Veeravagu, Skandar's emissary, in the space of an hour. (ஸ்காந்.) ஒற்றளபு--ஒற்றளபெடை, s. The insertion of a consonant in verse to lengthen the sound. See அளபெடை. ஒற்றாடல், v. noun. The act of directing spies. ஒற்றாளுதல், v. noun. Employing spies or secret messengers, தூதரையாளுதல். ஒற்றுக்கேடு, s. The elision of a consonant. ஒற்றுக்கேட்டல், v. noun. Overhearing. ஒற்றுப்பெயர்த்தல், v. noun. [in மி றைக்கவி.] Constructing a species of verse so artfully that, independent of the main sense, other meanings may be contained in it, மிறைக்கவியினோருறுப்பு--as அம்புத்தலை, the head of an arrow is அப்பு த்தலை, when the mute is hardened--which means the new head--besides the original meaning. ஒற்றெழுத்து, s. An inanimate consonant, மெய்யெழுத்து. ஒற்றொழிபாட்டு, s. A verse that contains no mute consonants, மெய்யெழு த்தில்லாப்பாட்டு. 27)

Poetry is of four kinds, viz.: 1. ஆசுகவி, an extemporaneous poem made by request, the theme, the kind of verse and some of the rhetorical figures to be wrought into it being given. 2. மதுரகவி, a poem in which sublime and gratifying ideas are couched in rich language, with varied appropriate rhymes and rhetorical figures, and all in a sweet flowing style. 3. சித்திரகவி, a poem variously of artfully composed. (See மிறைக் கவி.) 4. வித்தாரகவி, an extended poem, such as the great epics Ramayana and Bharata.--Note. Each of these four is also applied to the poet as well as to the poem. கவிகட்ட--கவிபாட inf. kuḷḷam (p. 131) s. Shortness is stature, கு றள். 2. Wickedness, mischievousness, cruelty, கொடுமை. 3. Fraudulent dexterity, craft, cunning, தந்திரோபாயம். Wils. p. 274. KHULLA. குள்ளன், s. (fem. குள்ளி.) A short man, குறளன். 2. An artful, cunning fellow, தந்திரக்காரன். 3. A cruel, mischievous person, கொடியன். குள்ளனைக்கொண்டாழம்பார்க்கிறான். He at-He attempts to find out the depth (of water) by sending (into it) a dwarf--said of one who employs a person unfit for his business. கள்ளன்பின்போனாலுங் குள்ளன்பின்போகப்படா து. Better is it to follow a thief than a dwarf--meaning it is a bad omen. குள்ளக்கெண்டை, s. A kind of fish. சித்திரக்குள்ளன், s. A dwarf. 2. A cunning fellow, தந்திரி.

kuẕai (p. 129) s. Young leaves, sprouts, foliage, boughs, twigs, தளிர். 2. Soft, well trodden mud; slime, சேறு. 3. Ear-jewels, குண் டலம். 4. (சது.) A tube, துளையுடைப்பொருள். 5. The நெய்தல் plant. மரங்குழைமண்டிப்போயிற்று. The tree abounds with thick foliage. குழைக்காடு, s. [prov.] The country-as distinguished from the city; a jungle, compared with more cultivated parts --as பட்டிக்காடு. குழைக்காட்டான், s. A rustic; a clown. குழைநாற்றம்--குழைவீச்சம், s. An unpleasant, leafy or grassy smell. குழைமறைவு, v. noun. Foliage, shrubbery, trees, &c., intercepting vision. 2. Sculking, &c., from creditors. குழைபிடிக்க, inf. [prov.] To obstruct an affair-from the practice of the Kandians, holding a bough before a person, as a sign of protestation, or of forbidding him to proceed. குழையடிக்க, inf. To recite incantations while shaking and drawing a handful of Margosa twigs over a sick or possessed person or animal, or one bitten by a snake. Mesmeric effects, similar to those occasioned by drawing the fingers in a particular way over the face of a patient, are sometimes produced by the above process, and ignorant people attribute them to the power of the incantations. 2. To vheedle; to use artful means in order to secure the interest of a person. 11)

A bird, the feathered tribe in general, பறவை. தேவகோலம், s. Divine majesty. கோலங்கட்ட, inf. [prov.] To attair for a dramatic performance, to put on a mask or costume. தலைவிரிகோலயாய்த்திரிகிறாள். She wanders, or roams about with dishevelled hair. இவன்கோலக்காரன். He is a sport-maker. கோலங்காட்ட, inf. To affect grandeur, or a pompous appearance; to assume a mean or too fine a dress; to make a parade, to appear beautiful either by nature or art. 2. [loc.] To present the bridegroom and the bride to the company at a marriage. கோலங்கொள்ள, inf. [prov.] To assume a peculiar dress, style or appearance. 2. To manifest symptoms of desease, to put on the appearance of sorrow, regret, gaiety, levity, pleasantry, &c. 3. To assume a rainy appearence--as the clouds. அவன்பெண்பிள்ளைக்கோலமாயிருக்கிறான். He acts a woman's part. கோலமாற, inf. To be charged--as the appearance, features, dress, &c. 2. To be disguised in, or to represent, a new character. கோலமெடுக்க, inf. To assume a shape. 2. To disguise one's self. கோலம்பண்ண--கோலம்புனைய, inf. TO ornament, to adore, beautify; to deck. கோலம்புனைபெண்--கோலஞ்செய்வா ள், s. A lady's dressing maid. (p.) கோலம்போட--கோலமிட--கோல மெழுத, inf. To mark ornamental lines &c., on a person, wall or floor. எல்லாருந்தடுக்கின்கீழ்நுழைந்தாலவன் கோலத்தி ன்கீழேநுழைவான். When all creep under a little mat, he creeps under an ornamented covering, i. e. he is very artful. கோலம்வர, inf. To go in procession. காலாகோலம், s. Irregularity, confusion. பிறந்தகோலம், s. cāṭṭu (p. 174) கிறேன், சாட்டினேன், வேன், சாட் ட, v. a. To transfer as a debt; to devolve, lay or cast on; to assign unto, ascribe to, ஒப்பிக்க. 2. To impute, to accuse, to attribute falsely, to impugn, குற்றஞ்சாற்ற. 3. To make excuse or pretext of a thing, to act under cover of something else, to evade, போக்குச்சொல்ல. (c.) 4. (R.) To beat or strike, அடிக்க. கோவிலைச்சாட்டிவயிறுவளர்க்கிறான். He maintains himself under the pretence of serving (begging for) the temple. சாட்டிக்கழிக்க, inf. To shift off; to get rid of by a reference to some other thing; to manage artfully. 2. To give sparingly, to distribute scantily. சாட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To take on one a debt due by another, to take the responsibility of a debt. சாட்டிவிட, inf. To transfer a debt to another. சாட்டு, v. noun. Consigning, transferring, ஒப்பிக்கை. 2. Accusing, charging with, குற்றஞ்சாட்டுகை. அவன் சாட்டிலே கொண்டேன். I have bought it by his means. (R.) 75)

cāturiyam (p. 176) s. [com. சாதூரியம்.] Eloquence, power or skill in address, flippancy, volubility, fluency, shrewdness in speech, சதுர்ப்பாடு. 2. Cleverness, dexterity, ability, address, sagacity, cunning management, wariness, artfulness, சாமர்த்தியம். --not applicable to manual actions. (c.) 3. [ex சதுரம்.] Profound knowledge, கல்வித்திறம். W. p. 322. CHATURYYA. சாதுரியப்பூனை மீனிருக்கப் புளியங்காயைத்தின்றுதாம். The artful cat left the fish, and seemed to be eating the tamarind fruit near it; [that the owner might leave the fish exposed] --spoken of one who acts with address to secure future objects. சாதுரியப்பேச்சு, s. Ambiguous, skilful discourse by which a person secures his object and takes care not to commit himself. சாதுரியம்பண்ண, inf. To give a hint dexterously; to answer shrewdly, indirectly, with address, &c., to waive a subject politely. சாதுரியங்காட்ட, inf. To display eloquence, ability, &c. 2. To act with address, cleverness, &c. சாதுரியன், s. [com. சாதுரியவான்.] A man of address, management, dexterity. 2. A person of skilful discourse, an eloquent man, an orator. சாதுரியாகமம், s. [R.
