amukku (p. 20) கிறேன், அமுக்கினேன், வேன், அமுக்க, v. a. To crush, press or squeeze, as a fruit, a boil, &c., அமுத்த. 2. Press down, press in or under, as a vessel into water, immerse, depress, press down or in, indent by pressure, அமிழ்த்த. 3. (fig.) To oppress, நெருக்க. நீரிலேசெம்பையமுக்கிமொண்டுவா. Sink the brass pot in the water, draw it up, and bring it. அமுக்கு, v. noun. Compression, depression, oppression as by nightmare, pressure as by the hand of the bailiff, அழுத்துகை. 2. That which compresses, depresses, &c., an incumbent weight, அமுக்குபாரம். அமுக்குண்டு கதறிக்கொண்டுகிடந்தான், He lay crying out, prostrate under the burden. அமுக்கன், s. One who does things secretly, இரகசியத்திற்கருமமுடிப் போன். 2. A sly, cunning person, dissembler, a deceiver, தந்திரகாரன். (c.) 3. [prov.] Nightmare, நித்திரையிலமுக்குமாவி. 20)

alṟu (p. 28) கிறேன், அலறினேன், வேன், அலற, v. n. To cry out, vociferate, roar with grief, pain, &c., bellow as a cow for its calf, கதற. 2. To scream, make an unnatural sound in crying, வீரிட. 3. To sing with a grating, harsh or unmusical sound, வெடிப்பாயொலிக்க. (c.) 19)

aẕu (p. 32) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், அழ, v. n. To weep, cry, இரங்க. 2. To bewail, lament, புலம்ப. 3. To whine, சிணுங்க. 4. To low, bellow, (as a cow for its call), bleat, (as a sheep), mew, (as a cat), caw, (as a crow), cry or hoot, (as an owl), கத்த. In some of these a cry of distress or anxiety is indicated as of the dam for its young. குடல்கூழுக்கழக்கொண்டைபூவுக்கழுகிறதா? Would you by adorning your hair with flowers while your belly is craving food? ஆண்டாண்டுதோறுமழுதுபுரண்டாலும் மாண்டார் வருவரோ மாநிலத்தில்? What though we roll in sorrow from year to year, can the deceased return again to this nether world? அழுகண்ணி, s. A species of plant from which water is continually oozing and dropping, ஓர்பூடு. அழுகள்ளன், s. A hypocritical weeper. அழுகுணி, s. A crying one, அ ழுவோன். அழுகை, v. noun. Weeping, crying. 12)

uppu (p. 62) s. Salt, any species of salt, acid or alkaline, லவணம். 2. Saltness, உவர்ப்பு. 3. The sea of salt-water-as distinguished from the other seas of Hindu cosmogony, the ocean, கடல். 4. Sweetness, deliciousness, இனிமை. (கு. 382. 8.) 5. A kind of play among females, மகளிர்விளையா ட்டு. 6. Melody, music, அராகம். 7. A heap of sand used as a goal in the game of prison-bars, விளையாட்டுமணற்குவியல். --Note. Five salts are spoken of as used by alchymists and சித்தாதிகள்; viz.: 1. கறியுப்பு, culinary salt. 2. வெடியுப்பு, salt-petre. 3. இந்துப்பு, a fossil, medicinal salt. 4. ஓட்டு ப்பு, salt supposed to be formed in the skull. 5. அமரியுப்பு, Urinary salt. இந்தப்பேச்சிலேஉப்பில்லை. This speech is void of savor. உப்பங்கழி, s. Salt-pan, உப்புக் கழி. உப்பளம், s. Salt-works, salt-pans, உப்புவிளைநிலம். 2. Brackish land, கழி. உப்பளங்கட்ட, inf. To construct salt-pans. உப்பளம்பாய்ச்ச, inf. To convey water into the salt-pans. உப்பளவர்--உப்பமைப்போர், s. Saltmanufacturers. உப்பிட--உப்புப்போட, inf. To salt. உப்பில்லாப்பேச்சு, s. Insipid discourse. உப்புக்கசனை--உப்பூறணி, s. Being impregnated with salt, as land. உப்புக்கட்டி, s. A granulation on a lump of salt. உப்புக்கண்டம், s. Salted meat, a piece of saltfish, flesh, &c. உப்புக்கண்டம்பறிகொடுத்தபார்ப்பாத்திபோல.... Like a Brahmanee who has lost her salted mutton [prov.], used when something is lost which cannot to inquired after. உப்புக்கரித்தல்--உப்புக்கூர்த்தல், v. noun. Having a saline taste. உப்புக்கீரை, s. A plant used for curry, ஓர்வகைக்கீரை. 2. A kind of curry made of that plant, ஓர்கறி. உப்புக்குத்தி, s. A kind of bird, ஓர்பட்சி. உப்புக்கொள்ளுகிறது, s. A play, taking a child on the back and crying, Salt for sale, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. உப்புச்செய்ய--உப்புவிளைவிக்க-உப்பமைக்க, inf. To make salt, உப்புண் டாக்க. உப்புத்தண்ணீர், s. Salt-water, brackish water. உப்புத்தரை--உப்புத்தரவை, s. Brackish soil. உப்புத்திராவகம், s. Muriatic acid, இலவணதிராவகம். உப்புத்திரி, s. A twist dipped in a preparation of salt, to serve as an injection for a child, மலங்கழிக்கஏற்றுந்திரி. உப்புப்பட, inf. To form as salt in pans, &c., by natural process, உப்புண் டாக. உப்புப்பாத்தி, s. The division or beds in salt-pans. உப்புப்பாத்திகட்ட, inf. To make salt-pans. உப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To try the seasoning of curry, &c. by the taste, உப்புருசிபார்க்க. உப்புப்பால், s. The milk of the mother after child birth for three days. உப்புப்புல்லு, s. Grass growing in salt soil. உப்புப்பூக்க--உப்புப்பொரிய, inf. To begin to form--as salt; to form as the lamina, உப்புமலர. 2. To have a pale color on the skin, perhaps a concretion from perspiration, சரீரத்திலுப்புப்படர. உப்புப்புளிதள்ள, inf. To abstain from salt and acid things--a regimen in medical prescriptions. உப்புப்புளிப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine the taste of curries, சுவையினிசை வுபார்க்க. 2. (fig.) To examine, make inquiry beforehand. பரீட்சைபார்க்க. 3. (fig.) To try or examine a part of a work, &c. in order to form an estimate of the whole. உப்புவாணிகர், s. Salt dealers, the caste, உமணர். உப்புவாணிகனறிவானோகர்ப்பூரவிலை? Is a salt dealer acquainted with the price of camphor? உப்புறைப்பு, s. Saltishness, flavoring of salt, உப்புக்கரிப்பு. காய்ச்சுப்பு or சவட்டுப்பு, s. Alkali, salt produced from the earth impregnated with soda. வழலையுப்பு, s. Soap. கறியுப்பு--கடலுப்பு, s. Sea-salt. காருப்பு, s. Salt produced from sesamum seed, கடுந்திலாலவணம். வளையலுப்பு, s. Fel vitri, glassgall; a very white salt. கல்லுப்பு, s. Salt in lumps. கந்தகவுப்பு, s. Salt produced from sulphur. கறுத்தவுப்பு, s. Black salt produced from the ashes of certain plants. மரவுப்பு, s. Potash. 63)

He knows not who laughs at him; he laughs at others not aware how much he is despised. (p.) சிரித்தமுகம், s. A smiling-face, a cheerful countenance. சிரித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To express joy by smiling. 2. To indicate approval, or consent by a smile. 3. To interchange smiles--as lovers. சிரித்துவிளையாட, inf. To jest and dally --as lovers. சிரித்துப்பேச, inf. To speak, while smiling or laughing. நாலுபேருஞ்சிரிக்கநடக்க, inf. To act so as to be ridiculed. களகளென்றுசிரிக்க, inf. To chuckle. See களகளெனல். சிரிப்பு, v. noun. Laughing, laughter, a smile, நகைப்பு. 2. Ridicule, பழிப்பு. 3. Jest, fun, பகிடி. இதுநல்லசிரிப்பு. A laughable thing. சிரிப்புக்காட்ட, s. To excite laughter by anticks, &c. சிரிப்புக்கிடம், s. Ridiculousness, shamefulness, exposedness to ridicule. சிரிப்புங்கனைப்புமாயிருக்க, inf. To laugh too much and be too jolly. கள்ளச்சிரிப்பு, s. A pretended smile. கள்ளச்சிரிப்புந் திருட்டழுகையும். Chit-point of a seed, தானியத்தின்மூக்கு. இல்லிமூக்கு--சில்லிமூக்கு, s. A bleeding nose. மூக்கடைப்பு, v. noun. Hinderance of breath through the nostrils. மூக்கணாங்கயிறு-மூக்காங்கயிறு, s. The rope or string which is put through a bullock's nose for a bridle. மூக்காங்கயிறுகுத்துகிறது. Perforating a bullock's nose for the string. மூக்கந்தண்டு, s. [com. மூக்காந்தண்டு.] Bridge of the nose. மூக்கரிகத்தி, s. [poet. குளிரி.] An instrument for nipping betel-leaves. (சது.) மூக்கறிவு, s. Knowing by smell. மூக்கறை, s. A person with an amputated nose; in contempt, மூக்கறைப்பயல். மூக்கறைச்சி--மூக்கறைப்பெண், s. [masc. மூக்கறையன்.] A woman deprived of her nose by amputation or disease. மூக்கறையனுக்குவாழ்க்கைப்பட்டால்முன்னும்போ கவிடான்பின்னும்போகவிடான். A woman whose husband has no nose can neither go forward nor backward; applied to a fickleminded master. மூக்கன், s. A man with a large nose. See காக்கைமூக்கன். மூக்காங்கொழுந்து--மூக்குக்கொழுந்து, s. End of the nose. மூக்காலேபோகிறசீவன். A living being which breathes its last by the nose; said of men in contempt. மூக்காலேயழுதல், v. noun. Snivelling, crying through the nose. மூக்கிலி, appel. n. A plant, Portalaca meridiana, சொக்களிப்பூடு. 2. As மூக்கறை. மூக்குக்கண்ணாடி, s. [high dialect சுலோ சனம்.] A pair of spectacles. மூக்குக்குத்துதல், v. noun. Perforating the nose of a child born after the death of two previous children, to preserve its life. மூக்குச்சளி--மூக்கூளை, s. Mucus of the nose. மூக்குச்சாத்திரம், s. See சரசாஸ்திரம். மூக்குச்சிந்த--மூக்குச்சீற, inf. [also சளிச்சிந்த.] To blow the nose. மூக்குத்தளுக்கு, s. A gold-ring worn in one nostril, by some women. மூக்குத்தி, s. A nose-ornament, or jewel. மூக்குத்திபோட்டிருக்கிறாள். She wears a nose-jewel. மூக்குத்தூள்--மூக்குப்பொடி, s. Snuff. மூக்குப்பிளவை, s. An ulcer on the nose. மூக்குப்பூருதல், v. noun. [vul.] Perforating the nose. மூக்குமயிர், s. Hair in the nostrils. மூக்குமயிர்பிடுங்கினாலாட்பாரங்குறையுமா. Will one's weight be diminished by pulling out the hair from the nostrils?--said of mean savings. [prov.] மூக்குவாளி, s. A ring worn in one nostril. மூக்குறிஞ்ச, inf. See உறிஞ்சு, v. மூக்கைச்சுளித்தல்--மூக்கைநெறித்தல், v. noun. Turning up the nose. மூக்கைத்தீட்டுதல், Whetting the beak as a bird. மூக்கையுமுகத்தையுங்காட்டுதல். Showing an alluring face, as a courtezan. 2. Looking sullen, displeased, &c. பிள்ளைமூக்கையுமுகத்தையுங்காட்டிக்கொண்டிருந் தாலேபோதும். If the child would only shew its [pretty] face and nose, it would suffice; said by a mother after its death. மூக்கொற்றி, s. A gold ring set with a stone or jewel. மூக்கொற்றிக்காய், s.
