aṉṉam (p. 34) s. Boiled rice, food in general, சோறு. Wils. p. 4. ANNA. அன்னக்களை, s. Faintness through hunger; languor on eating too much food when weak. அன்னக்காவடி, s. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. A choultry where boiled rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னசாரம்--அன்னரசம், s. The essence of food, chyle. Wils. p. 4. ANNARASA. 2. Conjee, rice-gruel, கஞ்சி. அன்னசுத்தி, s. Ghee, நெய். அன்னதாதா--அன்னதாதிரு, s. One who gives food, a charitable person. Wils. p. 4. ANNADATRU. அன்னதானம், s. The giving of boiled rice as alms; [ex தானம்.] Wils. p. 4. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)

A set of sacred works connected with the Siva sect, twentyeight in number, containing directions for the various rites of the system and much other abstruse matter, not deemed proper to be read by the vulgar, சிவாகமம். 3. ātīṉam (p. 38) s. [properly அதீனம்.] Proprietorship, hereditary inheritance, &c., சுதந்திரம். பராதீனன், s. One who serves under another. சுவாதீனன், s. One who is his own master, a free man. தெய்வாதீனம், s. God's disposal and direction, God's right of bestowing. 70)

āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. (p.) ஆற்றுக்காலாட்டியர், s. Agricultural women of low caste, உழத்தியர். (p.) ஆற்றுக்கால், s. A dike, channel for conveying water to the fields, ஆற்று வாய்க்கால். ஆற்றுச்சுழி, s. A whirlpool, vortex, ஆற்றுநீர்ச்சுழி. ஆற்றுச்செருப்படி, s. A small water-plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆற்றுணா, s. Rice tied up for a journey, கட்டுச்சோறு. (p.) ஆற்றுத்தும்மட்டி, s. Colocynth, பேய்க்கொம்மட்டி, Citrullus colocynthis, L. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், s. The natural construction of a sentence. See பொருள்கோள். ஆற்றுநெட்டி, s. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. engku (p. 73) --எங்கே, inter. Where? whither? எவ்விடம். எங்கத்து--எங்கத்தை--எங்கத்தை ய, inter. and adj. What or which place, or country, of what, &c. எங்கும். Every where, in all directions. எங்கும்பரவியிருக்கின்றது. It is every where extended. எங்கும்வியாபகனாதல். See அறுகுணம், under ஆறு. எங்கெங்கே. Whither, distributively. எங்கெங்கேபுகையுண்டோஅங்கங்கேயழலுமுண் டு. Wherever there is smoke, there is fire. அதெங்கேயிதெங்கே? Where is that, and where is this? i. e. both are gone. 2. Counter testimony; a witness brought to disprove previous testimony, மாறானசாட்சி. எதிர்ச்செட்டு, s. Competition in trade, ஒருவன்விற்பதற்குமாறாகவிற்கை. 2. [prov.] Trading at second hand, buying and selling again directly at a small profit. எதிர்நடை, s. The act of doing perversely. 2. Opposite course. எதிர்நடைக்கணக்கு, s. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. An arrangement of a series of verbs, &c. in the contrary order to that in which their nouns occur. See முறை நிரனிறை. எதிர்நிலை, s. Resistance, opposition, எதிர்நிற்கை. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை, s. [in amatory verse.] The rule for elucidating a circumstance by the opposite case, contrast. எதிர்நிற்க, inf. To stand before one, முன்னிற்க. 2. To oppose, to be perverse, or contumacious, மாறுபட்டுநிற்க. 3. To stand against, withstand, cope with, போர்செய்ய. எதிர்நோக்குநட்சத்திரம், s. A nutchattra whose influence has respect to movements and interests in the different points of the compass, not an astrological, but a common phrase; the same as எதிர்நாள், or more properly, பக்கநாள். எதிர்பார்க்க, inf. To wait for an expected person, வரவுபார்த்திருக்க. 2. To expect, to look forward, காத்திருக்க. இருகாரியத்திற்கெதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. To hope for a thing, to be in expectation of it. எதிர்போக, inf. To go against, oppose, meet as an army, assail, எதிராய் போக. எதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet as in the way, சந்திக்க. 2. ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். In epistolary writings and in conversation, this is often used as a compliment. ஏவற்பேய், s. A demon instigated and sent against one, ஏவப்பட்டபேய். ஏவற்பேய்கூரையைப்பிடுங்கும். A hired devil will unroof the house; i. e. a hired foe is more to be dreaded than the person that hires him. 65)

ēvu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏவினேன், வேன், ஏவ, v. a. To command, order, give directions to, கட்டளையிட. 2. To incite, stir up, prompt, stimulate, move, inspire, rouse, instigate, set on, தூண்ட. 3. To send, despatch, அனுப் ப. 4. To discharge (arrows &c.), shoot, throw, cast, எய்ய. 5. To excite and despatch (a demon against one), செலுத்த. ஏவாமக்கள்மூவாமருந்து. oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. [in literature.] An author's choice or decision between two different sentiments found in the writings of others, 32--உத்தியி லொன்று. ஒருதலைநோவு--ஒருதலைவலி, s. Pain on one side of the head. ஒருதலைப்பாக்கு, s. [prov.] An imperfect arecanut, defective on one side. ஒருதலைவழக்கு--ஒருதலைநியாயம், s. Partiality in giving judgment, statements, descriptions, &c., leaning to one side or party, an ex-party statement. ஒருதலைவழக்குநூலினுஞ்செம்மை. The statement made by only one party in a suit is straighter than a line; i. e. one tale is good till another is told. ஒருதன்மை, s. Being of one and the same kind, ஒருவிதம். 2. An unseasonable time. இவனிராத்திரியொருநேரத்தில்என்வீட்டுக்குவந் தான். He came last night to my house at an unseasonable hour. ஒருபடி, adv. Tolerably, ordinarily, ஒருவாறு. 2. In some degree, to some extent, ஒருவிதம். ஒருபடிசெய்துமுடித்தார்கள். They have done it, finished it, &c. with great labor. 2. They have done it defectively, exceptionably, not thoroughly. ஒருபடித்தாய். So and so, tolerably. ஒருபடியாக, inf. [used as an adverb.] In some sense, manner, degree, partly. 2. oṟṟu (p. 84) s. A mute consonant, மெய் யெழுத்து. 2. Spying, espionage, searching, agency, வேவு. 3. A messenger, an agent or emissary, தூதன். 4. A spy, வேவுகாரன். ஒற்றர், s. Spies, searchers, emissaries, வேவுகாரர். 2. The confidential agents or messengers of a prince whether employed in his own dominion or another's, for a good or bad purpose, தூதர். ஒற்றராலக்கணத்தேயுணர்ந்து. Being acquainted (with the counsels of the enemy) at that time through the spies. (பார.) கன்னலொன்றளவைதன்னிற்கந்தவேளொற்றன்யா க்கை சின்னபின்னங்களாகச்செய்குவன். I would tear to pieces the body of Veeravagu, Skandar's emissary, in the space of an hour. (ஸ்காந்.) ஒற்றளபு--ஒற்றளபெடை, s. The insertion of a consonant in verse to lengthen the sound. The elision of a consonant. ஒற்றுக்கேட்டல், v. noun. Overhearing. ஒற்றுப்பெயர்த்தல், v. noun. [in மி றைக்கவி.] Constructing a species of verse so artfully that, independent of the main sense, other meanings may be contained in it, மிறைக்கவியினோருறுப்பு--as அம்புத்தலை, the head of an arrow is அப்பு த்தலை, when the mute is hardened--which means the new head--besides the original meaning. ஒற்றெழுத்து, s. An inanimate consonant, மெய்யெழுத்து. ஒற்றொழிபாட்டு, s. A verse that contains no mute consonants, மெய்யெழு த்தில்லாப்பாட்டு. 27)

Lukshmi, who art created as the model of women. கட்டளைகேட்க, inf. To obey an order, to execute a commission, to listen or to attend to the issuing of orders. கட்டளைகொடுக்க, inf. To give permission, to grant privileges, warrant. கட்டளைக்கல், s. A touchstone, உரைகல். 2. Weight, நிறைகல். கட்டளைக்குரு--கட்டளைச்சுவாமி, s. The principal priest for the time being--so used by the Romanists. கட்டளைசொல்ல, inf. To give or publish an order, to publish a notice. கட்டளைச்சட்டம், s. Regulations, enactments, edicts, statutes. கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. One of a religious order who acts as an overseer or burser in a temple, or charitable institution, receiving the rents and dues, making disbursements and seeing that the services are properly conducted. வாரக்கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. An overseer of a religious order who is gratuitously fed by the community, receiving food from the same family every seventh day. கட்டளைபண்ண, inf. To command, direct, order. கட்டளைபிடித்துவார, inf. [prov.] To cut ola by a rule. கட்டளைப்படிவர, inf. To come regularly. 2. To come according to order. கட்டளைமீற, inf. To break or violate an order. கட்டளையிட, inf. To order, command, direct, decree, prescribe, charge. 2. To grant, bestow. 3. To pass a law or edict, to utter a decision. நமக்கீசனிட்டகட்டளையிதுதான்.
