அசாதுரியம்
acāturiyam (p. 6) s. [priv. அ et சாதுரி யம்.] Want of eloquence, சொற்றிறமின்மை. See சாதுரியம். (p.) 16) *
அடி
aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

utāram (p. 60) s. Liberality, generosity, munificence, கொடை. 2. Boldness or confidence in speaking, eloquence, manliness in carriage and address, clearness of perception and judgment, தாராளம். 3. [in rhetoric.] The chief point in a sentence which though not expressed, is clearly implied, குறிப்பிற்றோன்றியபொருள். உதாரகுணம்--உதாரத்துவம், s. kalai (p. 96) s. A digit or one-sixteenth of the moon's diameter, a phasis, சந்திரன்பங்கு. 2. A minute portion of time equal to thirty காட்டை, or about eight seconds,காலநுட்பம். 3. The sixtieth part of a பாகை, or of onethirtieth of a zodiacal sign or one Indian hour, ஓர்பாகையிலறுபதிலொன்று. Wils. p. 2. KALA. 4. The solid part of timber, வைரம். 18. A girdle, அரைப்பட்டிகை. 19. A woman's exterior girdle, consisting of seven strings of jewels, மேகலை. 2. Brightness, splender, பிர காசம். 21. Tissues, சவ்வு. கலாநிதி, s. The moon, சந்திரன். கலைகுறைய, inf. To decrease as divinity in an idol by the neglect of pujah, &c. 2. (fig.) [in contempt.] To be cashiered, degraded, to lose office, decrease--as prosperity. கலைக்கொம்பு, s. Stag's horn--also called கலங்கொம்பு. கலைஞர், s. Poets, bards, philosophers, the literati, புலவர். கலைஞானம், s. Philosophy, literature, universal knowledge, கல்வியுணர்வு. 2. The arts and sciences, being sixty four, viz.: 1. அக்கரவிலக்கணம், the knowledge of spelling and reading, orthography, the science of reading. 2. இலி கிதம், caligraphy, penmanship. 3. கணி தம், the art of computation, arithmetic, the science of numbers. 4. வேதம், the Hindu Veda or law. 5. புராணம், a class of sacred books comprising the whole body of Hindu theology. 6. வியாகரணம், grammar. 7. நீதிசாத்திரம், jurisprudence. 8. சோதிடசாத்திரம், astronomy, including astroloy. 9. தருமசாத்திரம், ethics, moral philosophy, code of laws. 1. யோகசாத் திரம், the knowledge of abstract or silent devotion, rules for religious and abstract meditations. 11. மந்திரசாத்திரம், A division of the Vedas in the first practical part; it includes prayers and hymns addressed to particular deities and used at particular sacrifices, and it also comprehends incantations in religion. magic, medicine, and every other art or practice in which enchantments are used. 12. சகுணசாத்திரம், the science of prognosticating by omens and augury. 13. சிற்ப சாத்திரம், architecture and mechanics, symmetry, shapes in general including sculpture, painting features, lines, hair, &c., of the human system, and their various effects on life. 14.வைத்தியசாத்திரம், science of healing, physic, pharmacy and surgery which may include restoration to life of the dead, the reunion of severed limbs. &c. 15. உருவசாத்திரம், physiognomy, the art of discovering the temper and foreknowing the fortune by the features of the face, metoposcopy, chiromancy, the art of foretelling the events of life by inspecting the hand, சாமுத்திரிகம். 16. இதிகாசம், history, traditional accounts of former events, heroic history--as found in the Bharata and Ramayana. 17. காவியம், epic poetry --as சிந்தாமணி, நைடதம், &c. 18. அலங்காரம், science of rhetoric. 19. மதுரபாடணம், eloquence. 2. நாடகம், dramatic science. 21. நிருத்தம், the art of dancing. 22. சத்தப் பிரமம், directions for the modulation of sounds. 23. வீணை, the art of playing on the lute or stringed instruments. 24. வேணு. the art of playing on the flute or pipe. 25. மிருதங்கம், the art of beating the tambourine. 26. தாளம், the art of beating the cymbals. 27. அத்திரபரிட்சை, archery, the art of throwing darts. 28. கனகபரிட்சை, the art of an assayer in gold, &c. 29. இரதபரிட்சை, the art of driving chariots, charioteering. 3. கசபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of an elephant. 31. அசுவபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the marks of a horse. 32. இரத் தினபரிட்சை, the art of examining and choosing gems, knowledge of precious stones. 33. பூமிபரிட்சை, the knowledge of the different kinds of soil, rules for determining by the surface, the nature and depth of soils, underneath which water is to be found, &c. 34. சங்கிராமவி லக்கணம், military art, tactics. 35. மல்ல யுத்தம், wrestling, pugilism, gymnastics, athletic art, boxing. 36. ஆகருடணம், the art of calling or summoning by enchantment. 37. உச்சாடணம், exorcism, dislodging devils or exciting them to injure others. 38. வித்துவேடணம், exciting hatred between parties by magical spells-one of the eight performances of enchantment. 39. மதனசாத்திரம், erotics, modus coeundi. 4. மோகனம், libidinous fascinations occasioned by enchantment. 41. வசீகரணம், the art of subduction by magic, the art of bringing one over to another's side or interest by enchant ment. 42. இரசவாதம், alchymy and chemistry. 43. காந்தருவவாதம் the knowledge of the condition of the celestial choristers. 44. பைபீலவாதம், the language of brute creatures from emmets upwards. 45. கவுத்துகவாதம், the art of restoring pleasure to a sorrowful mind. 46. தாதுவாதம், the knowledge of the pulse. 47. காரூடம். charms, incantations against poison. 48. நட்டம், information respecting any thing lost obtained by astronomical calculations. 49. முட்டி, information respecting any thing concealed in the palms of the hand (lit. in the fist.) 5. ஆகாயப்பிரவேசம், the art of entering into the air and becoming invisible. 51. ஆகாயமனம், the art of walking in the air. 52. பரகாயப்பிரவேசம், the power of leaving one's own body and entering another lifeless body or substance at pleasure. 53. அதிரிசயம், the power of making one's self invisible. 54. இந்திரசாலம், the art of conjuring, juggling, &c. 55. மகேந்திர சாலம், the art of performing wonders in heaven and earth. 56. அக்கினித்தம்பம், restraining the action of fire. 57. சலத் தம்பம், The art of counteracting the yielding quality of water so as to be able to walk on its surface. 58. வாயுத்தம்பம், the art of restraining the power of the wind. 59. திட்டித்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the eyes. 6. வாக்குத்தம்பம், the art of fascinating the mouth. 61. சுக்கிலத் தம்பம், the art of restraining the semen virile. 62. கனனத்தம்பம், the art of preventing the discovery of things concealed. 63. கட்கத்தம்பம், the art by which the power of sword or any other weapon is nullified. 64. அவத்தைப்பிர யோகம், the power of stationing the soul at pleasure, in any of the five stages in full energy by virtue of abstract devotion for converse with the deity. See அவத்தை. கலைநாதன், s. Argha, a divinity of the Jainas. கலைநாயகன், s. Budha, புத்தன். (திவாக.) கலைமகள்--கலைமடந்தை, s. Sarasvati--as the patroness of the arts, சரச்சுவதி. (p.) கலைமலைவு, s. A species of கள்ளி shrub, the prickly pear, Euphorbia antiquorum; Triangular Spurge. சதுரக்கள்ளிப்பால், s. The milkey juice of the கள்ளி hardened and sold as a drug. சதுரப்பட, inf. To become, or be made square. சதுரப்பாடு, v. noun. Discretion, &c., as சதுரம். 2, 3, 4. 2. [prov.] Being four sided, square or oblong, சதுரம். (Limited.) சதுரர், s. [pl.] Inhabitants of a large city; the polite, the polished, நகரப்பதிவா ழ்வோர். 2. Clever, sagacious, eloquent persons, திறமுடையோர். 3. Fashionable persons, நாகரீகமுள்ளவர். சதுரன், s. சனி
caṉi (p. 173) s. The planet Saturn, the most, malignant, in astrological influence of all the planets, ஓர்கிரகம். 2. Saturday, சனிக்கி ழமை. W. p. 829. S'ANI. 3. (fig.) A person of ill omen whose company is dangerous, சனிபோன்றவன்.--Note. The different positions and influences of the planet are. (1.) அஷ்டமசனி. See under அஷ்டம். (2.) நாலாமிடத்துச்சனி, called also அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி. Saturn in the fourth sign from that of one's birth, where his influence is less malignant. (3.) இரண்டாமிடத்துச்சனி, or பாதச் சனி. Saturn in the sign nest to that in the ascendant, where his influence is indicative of eloquence and oratory. (4.) ஏழ ரையாண்டுச்சனி. Saturn's 7?? years' evil influence called ஏழரை, and divided into three parts, மங்குசனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணச்சனி which see. As saturn is 2?? years in each sign of the zodiac, it occupies 7?? years for three signs, so that a man living ninety years would pass three times through all these periods. See ஏழரை. (5.) பன்னிரண்டாமிடத்துச் சனி. Saturn in the 12th sign from that in the ascendant. (6.) சன்மச்சனி. Saturn in the ascendant. (7.) மகத்துச்சனி. Saturn in the first lunar asterism of Leo called மகம், indicating great calamities. (8.) மீனச்சனி. Saturn in the Pices, considered unpropitious in its influence. இவனெனக்கு மகத்துச்சனிபோலிருக்கிறான். He is a great enemy to me. சனிகழிய--சனியன்றொலைய, inf. To expire or end as any period of saturn's malign influence on a person. 2. To terminate as a cause of calamity, evil, &c. சனிக்கிழமை--சனிவாரம், s. Saturday. சனிக்கிழமைவிரதம், s. [also சனிவிர தம்.] A fast on Saturdays, to avert the evil influences of Saturn, when, before eating, crows, emblems of Saturn, are fed. 2. A fast in honor of Vishnu. சனிபகவான்--சனீச்சுரன், s. The regent of Saturn. சனிபிடித்தல், v. noun. Being seized by Saturn, brought under his malignant influence. 2. (fig.) Being assailed by adverse circumstances, துன்புறுதல். சனிமுழுக்கு, v. noun. Bathing on Saturdays. சனிமூலை, s. The north east, (lit.) Saturn's quarter, வடகிழக்கு. சனியன், s. Saturn the planet. 2. An unlucky person, associating with whom may bring evil. 3. A troublesome person, animal, thing, circumstance, &c. இவன் எனக்குச் சனியனாய் வந்தான். He is a Saturn (an inauspicious person) to me. சனிவேதை, s. The influence of Saturn; pain, சனிதோஷம். (R.) சனிக்காசு, s. A small coin paid to the master, by the scholars, on Saturdays. சனிப்பாட்டு, s. [loc.] A song or poem sung by the boys of a school, near the end of a year, to obtain presents from their parents, and others, for the master. சனியெண்ணெய், s. The oil collected by scholars, from their parents, for their teacher, on Saturdays. 66) *

campiratāyam (p. 164) s. Tradition, traditional communications--as of a doctrine; knowledge transmitted orally from teacher to teacher and established as of divine authority--such as the meaning of the Vedas, Agamas and other sacred books, குருபாரம் பரியம். (சிவ. ஞா.) 2. Customs and manners --as of a tribe; usage, observance, குலாசாரம். (p.) W. p. 93. SAMPRADAYA. 3. Skill, dexterity, cleverness, address, சாமர்த்தியம். 4. [vul.] Artfulness, shrewdness, cunning management, சாதுரியம். (c.) சம்பிரதாயக்காரன்--சம்பிரதாயஸ்தன், s. A skilful man. 2. One who regards traditions. சம்பிரதாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak on a subject artfully so as not to entrap one's self, or be defeated by an opponent. சம்பிரதாயவழக்கு, s. Traditionary usage. (p.) சம்பிரதாயவித்தை, s. Art and cunning. சம்பிரதாயவிளக்கம், s. A treatise on Elocution, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். கைச்சம்பிரதாயம், s. Manual dexterity. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction from a guru. See குரு. வாய்ச்சம்பிரதாயம், s. Cleverness in talking, eloquence--sometimes in reproach. வித்தில்லாச் சம்பிரதாய மேலுமில்லைக் கீழுமில்லை. Nothing above or below comes without seed (without a cause)--spoken of an ostentatious display of importance, or sagacity, without foundation from ancestry, &c. 37) *
சரசுவதி
caracuvati (p. 166) s. Sarasvati, wife of Brahma, the goddess of speech, eloquence, music and literature, generally கலைமகள். --She is fancied to reside on the tongue of Brahma, also on those of poets and orators. (c.) 2. The name of a river, சரசுவதியாறு. 3. (fig) An amiable, excellent woman, குணவதி. W. p. 97. SARASVATI. (p.) சரசுவதிகூடம், s. A repository of books on all kinds of learning--the archives of the Indian Minerva at Tanjore. சரசுவதிபீடம், s. The Parnassus of the Hindus, where science is said to have been acquired intuitively; a term used in praise of a learned man, or in ridicule. (c.) சரசுவதிபூசை, s. The worship of Sarasvati, on the last day of Navaratri, (நவராத்திரி,) or nine night's worship, together with Durga and Lukshmi. On this occasion school-boys and others pile up their books, styles, &c., fold their arms and worship them as an image of the goddesses. (c.) சரசுவதிவாக்கு, s. [prov.] The influence of Sarasvati--regarded as supernatural, endowing a person with gifts for acquiring knowledge, composing poetry, &c., intuitively. (c.) சரசுவதிமாலை, s. The name of a work on astrology, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். சரசுவதியாறு, s. As சரசுவதி, 2. சரசுவதிநெய், s. [prov.] Medicinal ghee for improving the memory, voice, &c., and strengthening the mind for study, &c., (Limited.) 37)

சாதுரியம்
cāturiyam (p. 176) s. [com. சாதூரியம்.] Eloquence, power or skill in address, flippancy, volubility, fluency, shrewdness in speech, சதுர்ப்பாடு. 2. Cleverness, dexterity, ability, address, sagacity, cunning management, wariness, artfulness, சாமர்த்தியம். --not applicable to manual actions. (c.) 3. [ex சதுரம்.] Profound knowledge, கல்வித்திறம். W. p. 322. CHATURYYA. சாதுரியப்பூனை மீனிருக்கப் புளியங்காயைத்தின்றுதாம். The artful cat left the fish, and seemed to be eating the tamarind fruit near it; [that the owner might leave the fish exposed] --spoken of one who acts with address to secure future objects. சாதுரியப்பேச்சு, s. Ambiguous, skilful discourse by which a person secures his object and takes care not to commit himself. சாதுரியம்பண்ண, inf. To give a hint dexterously; to answer shrewdly, indirectly, with address, &c., to waive a subject politely. சாதுரியங்காட்ட, inf. To display eloquence, ability, &c. 2. To act with address, cleverness, &c. சாதுரியன், s. [com. சாதுரியவான்.] A man of address, management, dexterity. 2. A person of skilful discourse, an eloquent man, an orator. சாதுரியாகமம், s. [R. Catho. usage.] The proverbs of Solomon. (R.) 23) *

cori (p. 211) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To shoot down--as corn from a sack, or sand from a cart, கொட்ட. 2. To scatter, pour forth, effuse, emit; shoot--as arrows; shed--as leaves, fruits, &c., பெய்ய. 3. To give very bountifully, pour forth riches; to distribute, ஈய. 4. (fig.) To speak fluently, pour out a flood of eloquence; to sing with great freedom a succession of tunes, &c., பாடல்சொரிய. 5. [improp. for சொறி.] To itch. (c.) சொரிசொரியென்றுசொரிந்தான். He gave profusely in money, food, &c. 2. He spake or sing very fluently, &c. முத்தும்பவளமுஞ்சொரிந்தாற்போற்பேசினான். He spake as a shower of pearls and corals. சொரிந்தளக்க, inf. To measure lightly, by pouring slowly into the measure. பாணஞ்சொரிய, inf. To pour forth arrows. புஷ்பஞ்சொரிய--புட்பஞ்சொரிய, inf. To drop or scatter flowers--as trees. 2. To scatter flowers before a great person, or in worship. சொரிந்துவிட, inf. To shoot down corn, &c., from a sack. சொரிவு, v. noun. Bountiful giving or distributing, ஈவு. 2. Fluency in speaking, singing, &c., தாராளம். 3. Abundance, profusion, மிகுதி. See சொரி, v. n. 17)

col (p. 212) s. Word, term, vocable, மொழி. 2. Saying, sentence, phrase, expression, passage, maxim, proverb, வாக்கியம். 3. Declaration, promise, assertion, command, assurance, உறுதிச்சொல். 4. Praise, encomium, panegyric, புகழ். 5. [in gram.] Parts of speech, பெயர்ச்சொல்முதலியன. 6. Toddy, fermented liquor--as inducing garrulity, கள். 7. Rice, paddy, நெல். 8. Fine rice, செந்நெல். 9. Ears of fine rice. நெற்கதிர். --Note. The parts of speech are four, viz.; 1. பெயர்ச்சொல், nouns and pronouns. 2. வினைச்சொல், verbs of both kinds. 3. இடைச்சொல், particles, as connectives, expletives, interjections, &c. 4. உரிச்சொல், adjectives and adverbs. Other specifications are included, as இயற்சொல். common words; திரிசொல், learned words; திசைச்சொல், provincial words, or according to the நன்னூல், words peculiar to or derived from any of the Tamil provinces around the Madura district, or form any of the Indian cognate languages; வடசொல் or வடமொழி, words of Sanscrit origin. அவனுடையபேச்சு காற்சொல்லுமரைச்சொல்லும்..... He speaks broken language; (lit.) half and quarter words. அப்படிச்சொல்லு. Say so--as a command; or as meaning--that is right. ஒருசொல்லுள்ளமனிதன்--ஒருசொல் வாசகன், s. A man steadfast to his word. சொல்லிற்பிழைதேட, inf. To detect a fault in speech. சொல்லணி--சொல்லலங்காரம், s. [in Rhetoric.] Figures founded in words, as distinguished from figures of thought. (See மடக்கு, &c.) 2. Elegance of expression. 3. Correct pronunciation. 4. Empty politeness, mere professions of kindness, உபசாரவசனம். சொல்லழுத்தம், s. Emphasis,--Note. Strictly speaking there is no increased meaning given to a word in Tamil, by a stress laid upon it; this is done by intensitive particles. சொல்லறுதி, s. Decisiveness in selling, making an offer, striking a bargain, &c. சொல்லாட, inf. To utter words, speak, talk. (p.) (குறள். chap. 82.) சொல்லாதசொல், s. Improper, indecent, uncourteous, offensive language. 2. Things improper to be told, secrets, &c. சொல்லாளி, s. One faithful to his word. 2. An eloquent person. (c.) சொல்லானந்தம், s. Unlucky or inauspicious use of a word, as portending evil to the hero of the poem. சொல்லிணக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] The chapter on words; etymology. சொல்லின்முடிவினப்பொருள்முடித்தல், v. noun. Confining the author's meaning to the finishing word or phrase, one of the thirty-two உத்தி. (p.) சொல்லின்பம், s. Euphony. சொல்லுக்குச்சொல், s. Returning abusive language. (c.) சொல்லுதவி--சொற்சகாயம்--சொற்று ணை. s. Aid by words--as recommendation. சொல்லுறுதி, s. Certainty, positive declaration, a averment, &c., as to a fact, event, &c. 2. Keeping one's word, faithfulness to one's promise. சொல்லுரிமை, s. A fine emphatic expression. சொல்லுரை, s. Explanation of a word --an adopted phrase. சொல்லேருழவர், s. (plu.)
