The inauspicious use of a word in a poem subjecting the hero on whom it is written to evils, செய்யுட்குற்றத்தொன்று. எழுத்திலக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] Orthography. See இலக்கணம். எழுத்திலாவோசை, s. Inarticulate sounds. எழுத்துக்காரன், s. A writer, a scribe, a clerk, a secretary, a copyist, an amanuensis, எழுதுவோன். 2. A painter, a limner, சித்திரமெழுதுவோன். 3. Orthographical errors in speaking, writing, &c., spoken chiefly of false interpretation, &c., of the Puranas or other writings deemed sacred, எழுத்திலக்கணவழு. எழுத்துக்கூட்ட, inf. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. Those regarding the body or சத்தாங் கோபகராம் are: 1. அன்னம், food, giving boiled rice, உணவு; 2. பானம், drink, குடிக்க நீர்; 3. அம்பரம், raiment, வஸ்திரம்; 4. மந்திரம், a dwelling, இடம்; 5. தாசபாலனம். preservation from slavery, அடிமைகாத்தல்; 6. காராமயத்திரிதயமோசனம், removing the three afflictions of captivity, சிறைநோய் மூன்றுந்தீர்த்தல். viz.: restraint from the calls of nature, மலசலவாதை; corporal punishments, சரீரதண்டனை; chains, fetters, விலங்கு போடல். 7. சவச்சேமம், burial, பிரேதமடக்கல். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *

Treasure, stoke, or cash, in hand, கையிருப்பு. 7. Pause in reading, speaking, &c., நிறுத்து கை. 8. A lodging, resting place, இருப்பி டம். 9. (in Madras, தருப்பு.) A small flat, diamond-like stone, வைரத்தரிப்பு. அவனுக்கங்கேதரிப்பில்லை. He will not get a footing. கையிலேதரிப்புண்டா. Have you money in hand? தரிப்புத்தட்டான், s. A monied man. (R.) 30) *

tāli (p. 234) s. The marriage badge tied on the neck of the bride, by the bridegroom, at the time of the wedding; and worn like a wedding ring, and an suspicious ornament, மாங்கல்லியம். (c.) தாலிப்பிச்சைக்கேட்க. The ask the boon of the wedding badge; i. e. for a wife, to plead for the life of her husband. தாலியறுப்பாய். Thou wilt lose thy wedding badge. (a curse.) தாலியைக்கட்டுவாய், Thou wilt fasten on another wedding badge be i. e. thou wilt lose thy wife. [prov.] அவளுடையதாலியிருப்புத்தாலியாயிருக்கவேண்டும். May her wedding badge be iron; i. e. enduring, may her husband live long. தாலிகட்டு, v. noun. Investing the bride with the wedding badge, on day of marriage. தாலிகட்டுமூர்த்தம். The auspicious hour for putting on the marriage badge. தாலிக்கயிறு, s. A twisted thread for the தாலி. தாலிக்குபொன்னுருக்க, inf. To melt gold for the wedding badge on an auspicious day. தாலிக்கோவை, s. A string of beads to which the marriage badge is attached. தாலிச்சரடு, s. [[prov.] தாலிக்கொடி.] A braided gold wire for the marriage badge. (c.) தாலிபெருக்கிக்கட்டுதல், v. noun. Appending beads with the marriage badge, accompanied with certain ceremonies-regarded as auspicious. தாலிப்பொருத்தம், s. [in astrol.] Such an agreement in the configuration of the heavenly bodies, in the horoscope of the two persons to be united, as is deemed propitious for the marriage; and the investiture of the bride with the தாலி. --Note. If the தாலிபொருத்தம் be unpropitious, the parties do not come together; the wedding is deferred. It is one of the தசப்பொருத்தம். தாலியறுக்க, inf. To tear off the wedding token at the husband's death. தாலியறுத்தவள், appel. n. A widow. one who has torn off the marriage badge. தாலியுரு, s. Fordableness, ford, தாண்டுதுறை.-- The நிலை, (attitudes) in archery are; 1. பைசாசம், standing with one leg straight and the other bent, as devils are said to stand; 2. மண்டலம், standing with both knees bent out; 3. ஆலீடம், standing with the right knee bent out, and the left foot advanced; 4. பிரத்தியாலீடம், standing with the left knee bent and the right foot advanced. (சது.)--Note. Some authorities give a fifth posture, சமபாதம், standing with the feet even. நிலையுரியாய்ச்சீலையையுரிந்தான். He stripped or made himself naked. நிலையைவிட்டால்நீச்சு. Indicating words omitted necessary for a full sense, ஒழியிசை, கூரியதோர்வாண்மன், it is a sharp sword [it has cut down many]. 4.
