Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. In astrology, the zodiac is divided into three equal parts of four signs each, in reference to their supposed influences--as சரராசி, the four signs auspicious to movements, as journeyings, &c., Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricornus; ஸ்திரராசி, the four signs auspicious to stationary actions or employments, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius; and உபயராசி, the four signs alike auspicious to both classes, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. இராசிக்காரன்--இராசியுள்ளவன், s. A fortunate person, a lucky fellow. இராசிச்சக்கரம்--இராசிவட்டம், s. The zodiac. இராசிநாதன், s. The ruling planet at the time of a configuration, இராசிக்கதி காரியானகிரகம். இராசிபுடம், s. [in astrology.] The situation of the planets in the signs, இராசிகளிற்கிரகநிற்குநிலை. இராசிப்பணம், s. Coin in quantity--each piece not being separately examined. இராசிப்பிரிவு, s. The passage of a planet from one constellation to another, இராசிகடக்கை. இராசிப்பொருத்தம், s. Agreement in several particulars, between the zodiacal signs of a man and woman in order to their being adapted to each other for marriage, மணப்பொருத்தம்பத்தி னொன்று. 2. The supposed influence of one's sign--spoken when any thing unfavorable happens, இராசிப்பலன். இராசிமண்டலம், s. The zodiac, இராசிவட்டம். 2. ilakkiṉam (p. 52) s. [in astrology.] The rising of a sign above the horizon, the oblique ascension or the divisions of the equator which rise in succession with each sign in an oblique sphere--also defined as the arc of the equator which passes the meridian in the same time with each sign of the ecliptic, இராசிகளினுதயம். 2. The right ascension of the rising point of the ecliptic at any given time. Wils. p. 714. LUGNA. இலக்கினசடுவருக்கம், s. A division of the rising sign for calculating nativities embracing six things; 1. ஓரை, the rising sign. 2. சுடர்ச்செலவு, a division of the sign into two equal parts. 3. திரேக்காணம், a division of the sign into three parts. 4. நவாமிசம், a division of the sign into nine parts. 5. துவாதசாமிசம், a division of it into twelve parts. 6. கோட் கூறு, a division of it into thirty parts. 23)

ilkku (p. 52) s. A mark, butt, object of aim, குறி. 2. An equal, that which is in opposition as a rival, a competitor, an opponent, the opposite party in games or trials of ability or strength, எதிரி. 3. Distinguishing marks or signs, அசாதாரணதருமம். 4. Direction, course, tendency, குறிப்பு. 5. Intention, purpose, the object in view, motive, எண்ணம். 6. Means, ability, expedient, contrivance, ஏது. 7. Seasonable opportunity, convenient time, சமயம். (c.) அவ்விடம்போக உனக்கிலக்குச்சொல்லுவேன். I will give you some marks by which you may find your way there. உனக்கிவனேயிலக்கு. He is a match for you. இலக்குப்பார்க்க, inf. To take aim, இலட்சியம்பார்க்க. இலக்குவைக்க, inf. To take aim in shooting. 2. (fig.) To wait for opportunity--generally to do evil. 3. To act covertly through another in doing evil to any one, making him appear as the principal.

ilampam (p. 53) --இலம்பனம், s. Any thing hanging, a pendulum, தொங்குவது. 2. A garland, மாலை. 3. [in astronomy.] The complement of the latitude or are between the pole and the zenith of a given place which is the same as the altitude of the equator, ககோளத்திற்கூறுமோர்பாகையளவு. 4. il (p. 55) . Not, non-existence, death, மரணம். (p.) 2. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. Without labor, or difficulty. பாவமின்றிநடக்கிறது அரிது. It is difficult to live without sinning. 23)
