acti (p. 5) s. Ridicule, scoffing, laughter, joking, pleasantry, சிரித்துப்பேசுகை. (p.) 2. (பஞ்.) Sunddenness, சடுதி. 3. Lightness, carelessness, (often used for அயர்தி). 4. Drowsiness, சோர்வு. 5. The name of a certain man who was praised by ஔவையார், supposed to be a shephered, ஔவையார் கேர வைபாடப்பெற்றவன். (c.) 6. (St.) An unchaste woman, வசவி. (p.) அசதிக்கோவை, s. The name of a book wherein a shepherd named அசதி is praised by ஔவையார்; it contains four hundred stanzas like all கோவை books. அசதிசன்னி, s. Apoplexy. (M. Dic.) அசதியற, (used adverbially.) Attentively, giving the whole attention, free from other dares. காதலர்தாய்தந்தைவைகுழி அசதியாடிலர், they indulge not in laughter in the presence of the father and mother of their husbands. 64) *

añcaṉam (p. 7) s. Blackness, darkness, black coloring, கறுப்பு. 2. A collyrium or black paint for the eyelids, கண் ணுக்கிடுமை. 3. A black coloring or magic ointment put on the hand, &c. to assist in discovering lost, stolen, or concealed property; a species of magic, சேமப்பொருள் முதலியகாட்டுமை. 4. One of the eight elephants which support the world, being that of வருணன், regent of the west point, மேற்றிசையானை. Wils. p. 14. ANJANA. 5. Medicine for the eye when a person is bitten by a venomous snake, and also for one who has fits, கலிக்கம். 6. A black stone, marble, சலவைக்கல். (p.) அஞ்சனக்கலிக்கம், s. A magic ointment rubbed on the eyes or palms of the hand of one who wishes to discover any thing lost. அஞ்சனக்கல், s. Sulphuret of antimony, a combustible used in fireworks, giving a blue flame. See நிமிளை. (M. Dic.) அஞ்சனக்காரன், s. A soothsayer, conjurer, sorcerer. அஞ்சனக்கோல், s. A paint brush or pencil to blacken the eyelids. அஞ்சனத்திரயம், s. Three species of magical ointments, viz., பூதாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering whether a person is possessed or not; சோராஞ் சனம், that which assists in discovering stolen property; and பாதாளாஞ்சனம், that which assists in discovering treasure buried under ground. அஞ்சனபாஷாணம், s. One of the thirty-two kinds of native arsenic. அஞ்சனமெழுத, inf. To paint the eyes. அஞ்சனவண்ணன், s. Vishnu, the blue colored, திருமால். அஞ்சனாவதி, s. The female of the elephant supporting the north-east, or the eighth angle, of the world, வடகீழ்த்தி சையானைக்குப்பெண்யானை. அஞ்சனி, s. A small flower-tree, காயா, Memecylon, L. 2. Wils. p. 71. ARDD'HANARISHA. அத்தமண்டபம், s. The court in a temple next to the sacred shrine. See கருப்பகிரகமண்டபம். அத்தாதுரம், s. Desire for wealth, covetousness, பொருளாசை. அத்தோதயம்--அர்த்தோதயம், s. The rising of the sun and moon, in conjunction, at the beginning of which, the sun is in Capricorn on a Sunday in the month of January, and the moon in the 22d asterism, and the 17th யோகம்; deemed a most auspicious moment for religious bathing, alms-giving and other duties. These five things do not occur together oftener than once in sixty years. An important circumstance is the half rising of the sun, with which are connected the four other things abovementioned, ஓர்விசேடநாள். அத்தோதயஸ்நானம், s. Bathing at the auspicious period of the அத்தோதயம். 24)

aṉṉam (p. 34) s. Boiled rice, food in general, சோறு. Wils. p. 4. ANNA. அன்னக்களை, s. Faintness through hunger; languor on eating too much food when weak. அன்னக்காவடி, s. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. A choultry where boiled rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னசாரம்--அன்னரசம், s. The essence of food, chyle. Wils. p. 4. ANNARASA. 2. Conjee, rice-gruel, கஞ்சி. அன்னசுத்தி, s. Ghee, நெய். அன்னதாதா--அன்னதாதிரு, s. One who gives food, a charitable person. Wils. p. 4. ANNADATRU. அன்னதானம், s. The giving of boiled rice as alms; [ex தானம்.] Wils. p. 4. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)

aruḷ (p. 26) s. Grace, mercy, kindness, favor, benevolence, கிருபை. 2. The act of giving, ஈகை. 3. Power, சத்தி. 4. (fig.) Permission, command, கட்டளை. (p.) அருட்கண், s. A gracious eye. அருட்குடையோன், s. God, as benevolent, கடவுள். அருட்கொடிவேந்தன், s. Argha, god of the Jainas, as a gracious sovereign, அருகன். அருட்கொடையோன், s. God, as granting mercy, கடவுள். அருட்சித்தி, s. Quick-silver, பாத ரசம். அருட்செல்வம், s. Divine grace, as the true felicity, கடவுள்கடாட்சம். 2. Benevolence, one of the three good qualities of the mind, மனதின்நற்குணம்மூன்றினொன்று. The others are, ஆசையறுத்தல், and தவப்பற்று. அருளாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அருளுடைமை, s. Benevolence, kindness to all creatures. அருள்சுரத்தல், v. noun. Abounding in grace. 2. Displaying grace. அருள்புரிதல், v. noun. Exercising grace, being gracious. 20)

aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. alku (p. 27) s. The blade of a weapon or instrument, the top or head of an arrow, ஆயுதத்தினலகு. 2. Weapon, arms in general, ஆயுதப்பொது. 3. Glow worm, மின் மினி. 4. A bird's beak, பறவைமூக்கு. 5. An ear of rice or other grain, பயிர்க்கதிர். 6. Number, calculation, எண். 7. Poetic numbers of feet or syllables, செய்யுளலகு. 8. Cowries, small shells used as signs of numbers in reckoning, பலகறை. 9. Seeds of மகிழ் tree, மகிழம்விதை, Mimusops elengi, L. 1. Grains of paddy, நென்மணி. 11. A broom, a besom, துடைப்பம். (p.) 12. (c.) The mandibles, jaws, கொடிறு. 13. [prov.] Breadth, extension, விசாலம். 14. A weaver's stay or staff to adjust a warp, நெசவுநூற் பாவினலகு. அரணை அலகுதிறக்கிறதில்லை. The eft does not bite, (lit.) does not open its jaws. அலகிட, inf. To reckon, compute, number, கணக்குப்பார்க்க. 2. To measure verse, scan, செய்யுட்கோசையூட்டும்பொருட்ட லகிட. 3. To sweep the sacred precincts of a temple as one of the duties of the சரிதைக்காரன், or religionist of the lowest degree in the Siva system, கோயிலலகிட. அலகுகட்ட, inf. To bind (charm) the mouth of a serpent, a dog, &c. 2. To charm a weapon to prevent its cutting, &c. 3. To settle an account. அலகுகழிக்க, inf. To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

āciriym (p. 36) --ஆசிரியப்பா, s. A kind of verse of a peculiar metre, being the second of the பா class and giving name to three species of similar character; viz.: தாழிசை, துறை, விருத்தம்; ஆசிரியம் being prefixed to each, அகவற்பா. See பா. (p.) ஆசிரியச்சீர், s. The kind of poetic foot peculiar to the ஆசிரியம் verse, also called இயற்சீர் or ஈரசைச்சீர். 62)

utvi (p. 59) s. Aid, help, assistance, succor, சகாயம். 2. Bestowment, ஈகை. 3. A gift, a donation, a boon, a contribution, a benefit, உபகாரம். உதவிசெய்ய, inf. To aid, render assistance. சமயத்திற்கேற்றஉதவி, s. Seasonable aid. சமயத்திற்செய்தஉதவி, s. Aid rendered in season. தெய்வஉதவி, s. Divine aid. கைக்குதவி, s. Help to the hand --as a staff, a weapon, an instrument, another to assist in labor, to lean upon, &c. கையுதவி, s. Help by hand, help of an inferior kind and temporary--as of a servant or person at hand. ஊருதவி, s. The help of one's countrymen. உயிருதவி, s. The aid given by which a person is rescued in a fatal juncture. 2. Help rendered by giving up life for another. பேருதவி, s. Great help. போருதவி, s. Weapons, army, &c., auxiliary to a war. 2. Succor rendered to a war. அயலுதவி, s. The help of neighbors. சொல்லுதவி, s. Help by word, recommendation. ஆளுதவி, s. Personal help, help of a more general and important nature --as having servants or dependants at command. பொருளுதவி, s. Help by property.

uptēci (p. 61) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To teach divine things, give spiritual advice, போதிக்க. 2. To initiate the disciple into the mysteries of his religion by teaching religious rites, incantations, சமயாசாரமுணர்த்த. 3. To give advice or instruction in general, புத்திசொல்ல. 4. Wils. p. 77. RUCHIKARA. உருசிகரமாயிருக்க, inf. To be wellseasoned. உருசிகாட்ட, inf. To allure by baits, dainties, shows, &c.; to cause one to engage in or relish a pursuit, by giving a gratifying fore-taste, இனிப்புக்காட்ட. 3. To attract, entice, decoy, ஆசைபதங்கா ட்ட. உருசிகாண, inf. To be attracted, allured, decoyed by bait, a taste, experience, profit, &c., உருசியறிய. உருசிதட்ட, inf. To be sweet, pleasant, சுவைதோன்ற. உருசிபார்க்க, inf. To taste, prove, examine, or ascertain by tasting, சுவையறிய. உருசிப்பட, inf. [with dative.] To relish, be sweet, taste well, உருசியாயிருக்க. 2. [with dative of pers. or thing.] To like, be taken with, to have relish for, or to be fond of pursuit, employment, &c., பிரியமாயிருக்க. நாவுக்குஉருசிப்பட, inf. To have a special liking for any kind of food. நாவுக்குருசிபாவுக்குருசி. That which is agreeable t the tongue will be so to poetry. உருசிப்படுத்த, inf.
