ilakkiṉam (p. 52) s. [in astrology.] The rising of a sign above the horizon, the oblique ascension or the divisions of the equator which rise in succession with each sign in an oblique sphere--also defined as the arc of the equator which passes the meridian in the same time with each sign of the ecliptic, இராசிகளினுதயம். 2. To roll a ball, or wheel, trundle a hoop, &c., to wheel a barrow, to bowl, turn about, revolve a thing on a plane, to whirl, (a discus, &c.), passing through the air at right angles with the horizon, உருளச்செய்ய. 2. [prov.] To defeat a rival by arguments, sophistry, &c., to overcome in athletic exercises, games, to overmatch, வெல்ல. 3. To beat a drum rapidly, to beat a ruffle, மத்தளம்விரை வாயடிக்க. 4. [in architecture.] To form a moulding, திரட்ட. 5. To form clay or other substances into balls or globules by rolling, working in the hand, &c; குண் டுருட்ட; [ex உருள், v.] உலகுக்குநாயகனாயோராழிதனியுருட்டி. Guiding the wheel of power as the sovereign of the universe. அவனைப்புடையனுருட்டும். The beaver snake will bite, will tumble him over (and bite him). (A curse.) உருட்டித்தைக்க, inf. To roll and sew a border--a kind of hemming. உருட்டிப்பார்க்க--உருட்டிவிழிக் க, inf. To roll the eyes and look intently with signs of anger or intimidation. உருட்டிப்போட, inf. To roll a ball, &c. 2. Perjury has ruined the family. ஆனையவனையுருட்டிப்போட்டது. The elephant rolled him over and over. உருட்டுதிரைக்கடல், s. The sea with rolling billows. குளிகையுருட்ட--மாத்திரையுருட் ட, inf. To form or make pills. (Med.) நாயுருட்ட, inf. To tumble down and bite--said of a dog. வாயாலுருட்ட, inf. To use sophistry, to dispute clamorously. கவறுருட்ட, inf. To throw dice'. உருட்டு, v. noun. Rolling, revolving on a plane, the revolution or turning of a wheel, whirling, உருட்டுகை. 2. Fraud, artifice, trick, sophistry in overcoming an antagonist, புரட்டு. 3. [prov.] Trading at second hand, buying and selling again directly at a small profit. எதிர்நடை, s. The act of doing perversely. 2. Opposite course. எதிர்நடைக்கணக்கு, s. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. An arrangement of a series of verbs, &c. in the contrary order to that in which their nouns occur. See முறை நிரனிறை. எதிர்நிலை, s. Resistance, opposition, எதிர்நிற்கை. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை, s. To wait for an expected person, வரவுபார்த்திருக்க. 2. To expect, to look forward, காத்திருக்க. இருகாரியத்திற்கெதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. To hope for a thing, to be in expectation of it. எதிர்போக, inf. To go against, oppose, meet as an army, assail, எதிராய் போக. எதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet as in the way, சந்திக்க. 2. ellām (p. 74) s. All, the whole, every, முழுதும். Like other universal terms, this admits உம், which however is often omitted, when the word is not used as a prefix; when it occupies the place of an adjective, its ம் is lost, and உம் is added to the word which it qualifies.--Note. In classical usage எல்லாம் takes அற்று as its declining particle--as மரமெல்லாவற்றையுங்கண்டான், he has seen all the trees. எல்லாத்திசைகளும். The whole horizon. எல்லாநம்மையும். All of us. எல்லீர்நும்மையும். All of you. எல்லாப்பூமியும்--பூமியெல்லாம். All the land, the whole of the land. 2. The whole earth. எல்லாரும்--எல்லோரும். All persons, அனை வரும். எல்லாரையும்--எல்லார்தம்மையும். All of them. எல்லோமும். We all, all of us, நாமெல்லாம். நீங்ககெல்லாரும். Impr. for நீவிரெல்லாரும். அவர்களெல்லாரும். All of them.--Note. The superlative being unknown in Tamil, the comparative is employed, as in the following and similar instances. The universality of the term gives it a superlative meaning. எல்லாரிலுமேலானவர். The greatest of all. 2. The most high. அதுஎல்லாவற்றிலும்மேலானது. It is the highest of all. 8)

ēntu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏந்தினேன், வேன், ஏந்த, v. a. To sustain, support, hold up, to carry in the hand--as a weapon, &c., to endure, to sustain a character, reputation, &c.; to support--as a beam, pillars, &c., தாங்க. 2. To raise or spread out hands --as a beggar; to raise a thing with the hands spread, கையேந்த. 3. To catch or receive in the hands or arms, to receive as flowing water, rain, &c., with the hands or with a vessel in the hands, பாத்திரமுதலி யவற்றையேந்த. 4. To hand up with extended arms, கையிலேந்திக்கொடுக்க. 5. v. n. To be elevated, exalted, உயர. ஏந்தியகொள்கையார். Persons of exalted character. (குறள். அதி. 9.) கையேந்திநிற்க. To stand begging with the arms extended. முன்றானையேந்தியிரத்தல். Spreading a corner of the cloth and begging. ஏந்திக்கொள்ள, inf. To hold up any thing. 2. To give a helping hand. ஏந்திசை, s. [in pros.] One of the three varieties of harmony in a verse consequent on a peculiar combination of metrical feet. ஏந்திசைச்செப்பல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வெண்பா verses composed of வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்துள்ளல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to கலி verses of கலித் தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்தூங்கல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வஞ்சி verses of ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசையகவல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to அகவல் verses of நேர்நேரியற்றளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திழையார், s. Women, the adorned, பெண்கள். (p.) ஏந்துகொம்பு, s. The tusks of an elephant, curved upward and terminating horizontally, யானைக்கொம்பு. 2. A curved palankeen pole, or pole for carrying a load, தாங்குகொம்பு. ஏந்தெழில், s. Surpassing beauty. பிள்ளையேந்த, inf. To take a child from another. 2. To carry a child in the arms. ஏந்தல், v. noun. Holding up, raising, &c., one of the three harmonies. ஏந்தல்வண்ணம், s. A poem in which the same words are repeated for the purposes of clearness and strength, ஓர்சந்தம். ஏந்தானம், s. [prop. ஏந்துதானம்.] A hanging shelf, a rack, grate, shelf to set things on, தூக்கங்கள். 2. The hands, or arms extended forward or locked with another's, to carry a child, a thing, &c., கையிலேந்துகை. ஏந்தானத்திலேகொண்டுபோகிறது. To carry on the hands so extended. ஏந்தி, s. The charioteer of the sun, அருணன்; [ex கால், leg, இல், not without legs.] காலில்விழ, inf. To fall prostrate, or do homage at one's feet. காலுழற்சிகையுழற்சி. Distortion of the limbs, by convulsion or otherwise. காலிறால், s. See under இறால். காலுளைவு, v. noun. Soreness, aching or pain in the legs, from cold, walking, &c. காலூன்ற, inf. To set on foot firm on the ground; to become established. காலூன்றிநிற்க, inf. To stand firmly, stand fast. காலூன்றிப்பெய்ய, inf. To rain in torrents--the clouds seeming to rest on the horizon. காலேயரைக்கால், s. A quarter and oneeighth, five-eighths. காலோடேகால்சேர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand with closed legs. கால்கட்டு, s. Inseparableness--as of wife and husband. கால்கட்டுகைகட்டு, Bound hand and foot. 2. (fig.) Confined at home by the sickness of another, by a grown-up daughter, a motherless child, or by urgent business, &c. கால்கழுவ, inf. To wash the feet; metaphorically to clean one's self with water after stool, மலங்கழுவ. கால்கூசுதல், v. noun. Shrinking of the foot in touching rough ground, &c. 2. Recoiling of the legs in stepping into the compound or house of a stranger. 3. Having spasms in the arms, and legs --as in cholera. கால்சீக்க, inf. To root out, exterminate, வேரோடுகளைய. 2. To efface, to obliterate, துடைக்க. 3. To dispel darkness, இருளைஅகற்ற. 4. To scrape with the foot, காலினாற்சீக்க. கால்செய்வட்டம், s. A fan, விசிறி; [ex கால், air, et செய்வட்டம்.] கால்தளர--காறளர inf. To become weak in the limps, by walking, sickness, age, &c. கால்தோல்--காற்றோல் s. [prov.] Leathern defences for toddy-drawers feet in climbing, மரமேறுவோர் காலிலிடுந்தோல். கால்நகம்--கானகம் s. Toe-nail. கால்நடை--கானடை. v. noun. Walking, going on foot--as distinct from riding and driving. 2. s. Sheep and goats; oxen, cattle, ஆடுமாடுகள் அவனுக்குமாட்டில் நூறுகால்நடையுண்டு. He has no-hundred oxen. கால்நடையாய், adv. On foot, a-foot. கால்நடையாய்ப் பிரயாணம்போக, inf. To travel on foot. கால்நோக்கு--கானோக்கு s. One-fourth aspect of a planet, being one of the four aspects. கால்பாவவில்லை. The feet do not seek the ground--recoiling from going. கால்பிடிக்க, inf. To fall at one's feet to ask a favor. 2. To press and rub the legs in order to induce sleep, to shampoo. கால்பின்னிக்கொண்டுநிற்க, inf. To stand cross-legged. கால்பின்னிக்கொள்ள--காலோடேகால் பின்னிக்கொள்ள, inf. To lose the power of walking, legs being crossed. கால்மட்டம், s. [prov.] Use of the feet in walking, by guess or practice--as in the dark or as a blind man. கால்மாடு, s. The foot of a bed, or of a person in bed, காற்பக்கம். கால்மிதி, s. Step in dancing. 2. Footmark, காற்சுவடு. கால்வருட, inf. To shampoo, to stroke the feet, soles, &c. கால்வழி, s. Lineal descent, succession, சந்ததி. 2. Foot-path. கால்வாங்க, inf. To make the leg, foot or tail of a letter--as of கு-து-ர். 2. To slip, to slide in muddy walking. 3. To die. 4. To trip one up, to disappoint, to frustrate one's object. 5. To amputate a foot, a leg, &c. 6. To be drawn up, stiffened, &c.--as a leg by a fall, convulsions, &c. கால்வாசி, s. To enter upon a practice, a course, &c.; to make a footing. 4. To intermix by marriage. காற்கொட்்டை, s. A small bolster for the legs and feet. காற்சங்கிலி, s. Chains for the feet. காற்சட்டை, s. Trowsers, pantaloons. காற்சரி, s. Foot-ring, a kind of ornament for the feet. காற்சிலம்பு, s. A foot-trinket of silver. காற்சீப்பு, s. The hip-bone, சந்தெலும்பு. காற்படம், s. The fore part of the sole or bottom of the foot, காலின்படம். காற்படி, s. A quarter measure. காற்பரடு, s. The ankles--as கரடு. காற்பிடிப்பு, s. Rheumatic stiffness, contraction, &c., in the legs. காற்றண்டை, s. A tinkling trinket for the ankles. கானடுவிரல், s. The middle toe of the foot. கானொண்டி--கால்நொண்டி s. Lameness of the leg. 2. A lame man. கடைகால், s. The foundation, அஸ்திவா ரம். 2. An excavation for laying the foundation. 3. [prov.] A small iron bucket for drawing water. கிந்துகால், s. A halting or hobbling leg. கிந்துகாலன், s. A hobbler. கீற்றரைக்கால், The contracted form of உ, marked thus ,-- as து, நு. கீற்றுக்கால், The contracted form of ஊ, marked thus --as தூ, நூ. See under கீற்று. குதிகால்--குதிங்கால் s. Heel. குந்துகாலன், (fem. குந்துகாலி.) A hobbler, a limping person. 2. A Squatter, a man sitting on the his knees. குந்துகால், s. Tip-toe. 2. Squat, sitting on the heels--as a man. கொம்புக்கால், s. The two signs for ஒ marked thus ெ-ா, as in கொ,சொ,. தோரணக்கால், s. Poles to which strings or ropes adorned with twigs or leaves are tied, to represent triumphal arches. நாற்காலி, s. Chair. பகுதிக்கால், s. The sign of உ, in certain compound characters marked thus --as சு, பு. பகுதிக்காற்பிறை, s. The sign of ஊ, marked --as பூ, யூ. பவளக்காலி, s. The name of a bird, Erythropus longipes, corallinus. பின்னங்கால், s. Hind leg. புள்ளிக்கால், s. The character ள subjoined to the letter உ, to lengthen it. புறங்கால், s. The upper part of the foot, instep. பொய்க்கால், s. A stilt, a false leg-as a wooden one. பொய்க்கால் கட்டியாட, inf. To go upon stilts. மடிப்பங்கால், s. Legs with folded knees. மடிப்பங்கால்போட. inf. To sit upon the hams with folded knees. மரக்கால், s. Crutches. 2. A wooden leg. 3. [ex கால், a measure.] An instrument of dry-measure. முக்காலி, s. Tripod. முக்கால், s. Three quarters, ??, தெ. முக்காலும். The three times, even three times. முக்காலும்போவேன். I will certainly go, come, &c. முக்காலேமூன்றுவீசமும். Almost, for the greatest part, nearly. முன்னங்கால், s. Grain or herbage in the shade or overtopped by another plant; under-plants, அடிப்பயிர். கீழ்ப்பாடு, s. The lower side, கீழ்ப்பக் கம். 2. Subordination, inferiority, அடக் கம். (Little used.) கீழ்ப்பாறை, s. A subterranean cell or cavern, கீழறை. (Rott.) 2. An understratum of rock, கீழிருக்கும்பாறை. கீழ்ப்புறம், s. The lower side, the underside, கீழ்ப்பக்கம். 2. The leeward or the leaning side of a vessel, தாழ்ந்தபக்கம். கீழ்மகன், s. A person of low caste, a mean person, இழிந்தோன். 2. The planet saturn, சனி. கீழ்மக்கள், s. Inferiors, low-caste people, the base, the vulgar, the ignorant, இழிந்தோர். கீழ்மாரி--கீழ்வாரி, s. Rain or thunder in the distance, towards the horizon. கீழ்மாரிகொள்ளுகிறது. It thunders at a distance. கீழ்மாரிகொண்டுமுழங்க, inf. To thunder near the horizon. கீழ்வயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, abdomen, அடிவயிறு. கீழ்க்கதுவாயளபெடை, s. [in prosody.] One of the eight அளபெடைத்தொடை, in which the first letter of every foot in a line, except the penultimate, is prolonged in sound. கீழ்க்கதுவாயியைபு, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme in which the last letter of every foot of a line, except the second, is the same ஒரியைபுத்தொடை. கீழ்க்கதுவாயெதுகை, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை, in which the second letter, of every foot of a line, but the penultimate, is the same, ஓரெதுகைத்தொ டை. கீழ்க்கதுவாய், s. [in prosody.] Rhyming or தொடை in every foot but the penultimate; and in இயைபுத்தொடை, in every foot but the second, கதுவாய்த்தொ டையினொன்று. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்முரண், s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை, in which the first word in every foot of a line, except the penultimate, has different meanings, முரண் டொடை. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்மோனை, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை in which the first letter of every foot of a line, but the penultimate, is the same, ஓர்மோனைத்தொடை. கீழ்மை, v. noun. Lowness, meanness, inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. 2. May you be stabbed--an imprecation. ஒருகுத்துச்சோறு. A double handful of boiled rice, with the hands thrust in perpendicularly. குத்துமி, s. Husk--as separated from rice by pounding. குத்துவெட்டு, s. Stabbing and maiming. --either in scuffles, robbery or war. 2. Dots and strokes--as erasures, பிழைபட் டதைக்கிறுக்கித்தள்ளல். குத்துப்பாடு, v. noun. Censuring or charging one with a fault; violent contention; lit. piercing, retortion. அந்தவேலைமேற்குத்துப்பாடுசொல்லுகிறான். He finds fault with the work. குத்துக்காயம், s. A wound by a stab; a stab. அடப்புக்குத்து, s. [prov.] Stabbing in the ribs, விலாக்குத்து. தலைக்குத்து--மண்டைக்குத்து, s. Piercing pain in the head; head-ache. முலைக்குத்து, s. Piercing pain in the breast. முலைக்குத்தைஅறியுமாசவலைப்பிள்ளை. Does the babe know the mother's breast-ache? குத்துண்ண, inf. To be beaten, pierced, stabbed, &c. குத்துப்பட. குத்துணி, s. One stabbed, குத்துண்ட வன். 2. A mean, vagabond, shameless fellow. குத்துப்பட்டுவிழ, inf. To fall, or drop down pierced. குத்துக்குநிற்க, inf. To stand on points, each urging his own reasons; to contend, to oppose-as rivals. 2. To haggle in dealing. குத்துகால்-குத்துக்கால், s. The uprights of a frame-as of a car; a piece of furniture, support, தாங்குகால். குத்துக்காலிட, inf. To sit or lie with bent legs; [ex குந்து.] குத்துக்கால்நாட்ட, inf. To fix or plant the uprights. குத்தாய்நிற்கிறமலை, s. A mountain standing perpendicularly. குத்துவிளக்கு, s. Standing lamp, a brass candlestick. குத்துக்கல்-குத்்தாங்கல், s. A perpendicular stone. குத்துக்கல்லாய்வைக்க, inf. To build with bricks set upon the edge. குத்துக்குளம்பு, s. The hoof of oxen, horse, &c., falling perpendicularly, not spreading-regarded as a good species for speed. குத்துப்பாறை, s. Small, perpendicular heaps of stones in the vicinity of a rock. 2. [local.] The horizontal part of a rock where women pound paddy. குத்துப்போர், s. The first layer of sheaves of corn in a stack, placed with the ears uppermost, நிறுத்திட்டமாய் வைக்குஞ் சூடு. 2. Boxing, fisticuffs, மற்போர். குத்துப்புள், s. [prov.] The place where the புள் stick falls perpendicularly in the கிட்டிபுள்ளு game. குத்தெனவீழ, inf. [prov.] To fall headlong, தலைகீழாய்விழ. 2.
