To train, reduce to order, break in (a horse, ox, &c.) to exercise, practise, பழக்க. 3. To direct, influence, manage, perform, command, நடத்த. 4. To operate in sentient beings--as the Deity, who, being the life of their life, influences their movements and is himself the agent in every action they perform, இயங்குவிக்க. காளையையியக்க, inf. uṟuppu (p. 68) s. A limb, or member of the body, parts, features, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Part (of a whole) component part, member, subdivision, department, section, பங்கு. 4. Just proportion, symmetry, அங்கலட்சணம். 5. Abundance, மிகுதி. 6. Bough, மரக்கொம்பு. 7. Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 8. A copy of single letters set for a child to imitate, மேல்வரிச்ச ட்டம். 9. Title deed, registry, &c. of land, காணியாட்சிப்பத்திரம். அந்தக்காணிக்கோருறுப்புமில்லை. There is no security, title, &c. for that land. உறுப்படக்கி, s. A tortoise, a turtle --from the contraction of its limbs, ஆமை; [ex உறுப்பு, et அடக்கி, from அடங்கு contraction.] உறுப்பணங்கெட்டவன். [prop. உ றுப்பினங்கெட்டவன்.] An ill-shaped, maimed, ugly person. 2. (Rott.) உறுப்பினங் கெட்டவன், A foolish, a witless fellow. உறுப்பற்றவன்--உறுப்புக்குறைந்த வன். An ill-formed, or deformed person, அவயவவீனன். 2. An ill-bred person. ஒழுக்கமில்லான். உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், s. The embryo. See எச்சம. உறுப்புக்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rhetoric.] A species of the figure called விசேடம். உறுப்புத்தோல், s. A species of deer-skin which, according to the shasters, the Brahman should fasten to his sacred cord, நூலிற்கட்டியமான்றோல். உறுப்புநலனழிதல், v. noun. Decaying or withering--as the beauty of a female, on account of the absence of her lover, அங்கத்தழகுகெடுதல். உறுப்புமயக்கம், s. A prodigy, a monster, one whose limbs are redundant, defective, &c. See எச்சம். உறுப்புள்ளவன், s. A vigorous, well-formed man, அங்கலட்சணமுடையவன். 2. A man of enterprising character, qualified for business, திறமையுடையான். 3. A man of good conduct, அறத்துறுப்புடை யான். 4. A man of good manners, ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவன். காணிக்குறுப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To get a title deed passed for land. அகத்துறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of virtue; they are eight in number. 1. ஐயப்படாமை, Freedom from doubt and uncertainty. 2. விருப்பின்மை, Liberation from the desires of the senses. 3. வெ றுப்பின்மை, Freedom from antipathy, prejudice, &c. 4. Exemption from illusion, confusion of mind, error, ignorance, &c. 5. பழியைநீக்கல், Freedom from evils. 6. அழி ந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், Restoring the ruined or apostate. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், Expounding or elucidating the nature of virtue. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, Great kindness, or benevolence to all sentient creatures. நூலுறுப்பு, s. One of the members or component parts of a treatise. மதிலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a fortification. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A jewel worn by bridegrooms upon their foreheads--a sign of the goddess இலக்குமி. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts or elements of poetry, as given in காரிகை, they are six, viz.: 1. எழுத்து, Letters forming thirteen classes. 2. அசை, Metrical syllables of two kinds. 3. சீர், Metrical feet of thirty kinds. ūẕ (p. 71) s. Antiquity, oldness, பழமை. 2. Rule, established usage, customs of long standing, or immemorial in their origin, the method, or order of performing things in regular succession முறை. 3. Original or natural state, quality, disposition, குணம். 4. Hatred, enmity, malice, பகை. 5. Sunshine, வெயில். (p.) 6. The entailment of actions performed in previous births, fate destiny; in the Hindu sense, the regular arrangement of events, by providence or fate, விதி. ஊழிற்பெருவலியாவுள. What is more powerful than destiny? போக்குமூழ்பலகழித்தி. Thou shalt pass many ages. (உபதேசகா.) ஊழ்த்துணை, s. A wife, the destined aid, a help mate, மனைவி. (p.) ஊழ்முறை, s. Order resulting from previous births, விதிமுறை. (p.) ஊழ்விதி, s. Destiny as resulting from the actions of previous births. பிராரத்துவவிதி. ஊழ்வினை, s. The actions of former births considered as the latent cause of the metempsychosis. ஊழ்வினைப்பயன், s. The sufferings and enjoyments entailed upon the sentient spirit in the varied course of the metempsychosis. 4)

aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. Powders of five ingredients given to women after child-birth, ஓர்மருந்து. ஐங்குரவர், s. The five superiors, ஐம்பெரியோர், viz.: King, அரசன்; guru, குரு; father, பிதா; mother, மாதா and elder brother, தமயன். In some classifications, உபாத்தியாயன் is placed instead of மாதா. ஐங்குழு, s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. See கிருத்தியம். ஐமீன், s. The thirteenth lunar asterism, அத்தநாள். (p.) ஐமுகன்--ஐயானனன், s. Siva, the five-faced, சிவன். (p.) ஐமுகாஸ்திரம், s. A five-pointed arrow, பஞ்சமுகாஸ்திரம். (p.) ஐம்பது, s. Fifty. ஐம்பத்தொன்று, s. Fifty-one. ஐம்பால், s. [in grammar.] The five பால், or the genders and numbers, ஐந்து பால். 2. The five modes of dressing a woman's hair, ஐவகையாகமயிர்முடிக்கை. 3. The hair of a female, மகளிர்கூந்தல். See பால். (p.) ஐம்புலம்--ஐம்புலன், s. The five senses, பஞ்சவிஷயம். ஐம்புலத்தடங்கான், s. He who is not comprehensible by the five senses-God, கடவுள். (p.) ஐம்புலம்வென்றோர், s. Ascetics, holy persons, முனிவர். (p.) ஐம்புலனடக்கல். Subjugation of the five senses. ஐம்புலனுகர்ச்சியினிறப்பன, s. The five kinds of creatures which perish by means of the senses, viz.: 1. சுவையரல்--மீன், fish, by the taste in catching at the bait. 2. நாற்றத்தால்-வண்டு, beetles, by the smell. 3. ஊற்றினால்-யானை, elephants, by copulation. 4. ஓசையால்-அசுணம், a species of bird by harsh sounds. 5. ஒளியால்-விட்டில், a species of insect, attracted by the light. ஐம்புலன்விழையான், s. An ascetic, முனிவன். (p.) ஐம்புலாதி, s. [prov.] Anxiousness, being full of cares. ஐம்பூதம், s. The five elements, பஞ்சபூதம். ஐம்பொறி, s. The five organs of sense, பஞ்சேந்திரியம். ஐம்பொறிநுகர்ச்சி, s. Enjoyment of the senses, பொறிபுலனைக்கொள்ளுகை. ஐம்பொன், s. The five kinds of metals, பஞ்சலோகம். ஐயாயிரம், s. Five-thousand, ஐந்தா யிரம். ஐயைந்து, s. Five times five. ஐவகைப்பொழுது, s. Five divisions of the day, சிறுபொழுது, viz.: மாலை, யாமம், வைகறை, எற்பாடு, நண்பகல். ஐவகைப்பொன், s. See பஞ்ச லோகம். ஐவகைமயிர்முடி, s. The five methods of dressing women's hair. See ஐம்பால். ஐவகைவினா, s. Five modes of interrogation for the solution of doubtful subjects. See வினா. ஐவர், s. The five பாண்டவர், or sons of பாண்டு, viz.: 1. தருமன். 2. வீ மன். 3. அருச்சுனன். 4. நகுலன். 5. சகாதே வன். 2. (fig.) The five senses in the language of ascetics, ஐம்புலன். ஐவரையடக்கி. Subjugating. the five senses-- ஐவருக்குந்தேவி, s. Dropada the wife of the Pandavas, துரோபதை. ஐவாய்மான், s. A cow, பசு. (திரு விளை.) (p.) ஐவாய்மிருகம், s. A bear--so called from the prehensile power of his four feet and mouth, கரடி. (p.) ஐவிரலி, s. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. The substance or contents of a thing, உட்பொருள். 6. The germ, வித்தின்கரு. 7. Color, tint, tinge, நிறம். 8. Middle, நடு. (சது.) 9. Height, hillock, மேடு. 1. A name of கருப்பொருள். (See பொருள்.) 11. A prong, barb, tooth, tine, spike, ஆயுதத்தின்பல். 12. Ingredients for magical preparations employed to fascinate, injure or destroy a person, viz.: plants, roots, skins, bones, flesh, &c., அட்டகருமக்கரு. 13. Immature egg in a fowl, முட்டை. கருக்கட்ட--கருப்பிடிக்க, inf. To form a mould. கருக்கரைய, inf. To suffer abortion. கருக்காய், s. Young and immature fruit, பிஞ்சுநெல். (குறள்). 2. Thin and immature grains in corn ears, பதர். கருக்குழி, s. The womb, the uterus, கருப்பாசயம். கருக்கூட, inf. To impregnate. கருக்கூடு, s. The ovary, that part of the body in which impregnation is performed. கருக்கூட்ட, inf. To form plans, to scheme, contrive, plan, யோசனைசெய்ய. கருக்கொள்ள--கருப்பற்ற, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated, to fecundate--as brutes of vegetables, to fill-as clouds with water, கருப்பங்கொள்ள. கருக்கொண்டமேகம், s. A teeming cloud. கருத்தங்க, inf. To be conceived, to be formed--as conception, கருப்பந்தங்க. கருத்தரிக்க, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated--as animals in general. கருத்தெரியாதவன், s. An unwise man. கருநூல், s. A treatise on enchantment. கருப்பை, s. The matrix, the womb. கருப்பொருள், s. The second class of பொருள், which treats of the beings, things, &c., peculiar to different countries. They are of fourteen kinds from gods down to the employments of men, அந்தந்தநிலங்களைச்சார்ந்தபொருள். See பொருள். கருமாரி, s. Extremity, difficulty in child-birth, பிரசூதவேதனை. கருமாரிப்பட்டை, s. A bark used medicinally in difficult child-birth. கருவழிக்க, inf. To destroy the f&oe;tus, to cause abortion, கருப்பமழிக்க. கருவழிய, inf. To perish--as the f&oe;tus, to miscarry, to suffer abortion. கருவழிவு, v. noun. miscarriage, abortion, கருப்பஅழிவு. கருவறிய, inf. To come to years of discretion. கருவறிந்தவன்--கருவாளி--கருவு ள்ளவன், s. An ingenious person, a genius, ஊகித்தறிபவன். கருவறுக்க, inf. To exterminate a family, &c., to ruin one's property,அடி யோடுகெடுக்க. கருவாமுப்பு, s. Salt-petre, வெடி யுப்பு. கருவிரிய, inf. To ear, to shoot into ears, கதிர்விரிய. கருவிரிந்தபயிர், s. The earing corn. கருவுயிர்க்க, v. n. To bring forth young either human or brute, ஈன. கருவுளமைப்பு, s. The six things incident to sentient beings on assuming corporeal forms, கருவில்நியமிப்பு, viz.: 1. பெறுதல் or பேறு, getting, gain. 2. இழத்தல் or இழவு, losing or loss. 3. இன் பம், pleasure. 4. பிணி or இடையூறு, disease, affliction, mishap, &c. 5. மூப்பு, old age. 6. சாக்காடு, death. To these some add பிரித்தல், separation, removal to a distance; and பிரிவிலாதிருக்கை, continued association. கருவெடுக்க, inf. To take ingredients for witchcraft, மாந்திரீகத்துக்குக்கருவெ டுக்க. வெள்ளைக்கரு, s. The white of an egg. மஞ்சட்கரு, s. The yolk of an egg. 122)

kuṇam (p. 118) s. Quality, attribute, property, பண்பு. 2. Disposition, temper, nature, தன் மை. 3. Good quality, moral or physical; proper temperament, virtue, நற்குணம். 4. Attribute, perfection, excellence--as of a deity, இலட்சணம். 5. Grace, beauty--as of a style or composition; merit, freedom from fault or defect--opposed to குற்றம், மேன்மை. 6. Wholesomeness, healthfulness, சுகம். 7. Soundness of intellect; normal state of the mental feelings, சொஸ்த புத்தி. 8. Indication, symptoms--as of a disease, வியாதியின்குறி. 9. Color--as a quality, நிறம். 1. Smoothness, சீர்மை. 11. Properties; functional powers or principles in nature, operative in all sentient beings; the sourses of the dispositions, &c., தத்துவம். 12. Thread, cord, string, &c., நூல், கயிறு. 13. A bow-string, நாணி. 14. Property, essence, original principle, சத்து. 15. [in physics.] Varicties, modifications, products of bodies, உடற்குணம். Wils. p. 291. GUN'A. 16. A water-pot, a pitcher--as குடம். குணத்தைமாற்றக்குருவில்லை. No guru can change the temper. குணத்தோடேகேள். Hear me with a right spirit and patience. குணநாடிகுற்றமுநாடி. Having examined the excellencies and faults--as of a style, a speech, &c. குணமதுகைவிடேல். Hold to what is good and proper; cease not to show a good disposition. குணமென்னுங்குன்றேறிநின்றார்வெகுளிகணமேயுங் காத்தலரிது. It is hard to divert, even for a moment, the anger of those who stand upon the mountain of virtue; i. e. who excel virtue. (குறள்.) அதிலுமிதுகுணம். This is better than that. அவனுக்குத்தாய்தந்தைகுணம்பிடிபடுகிறது. His parents' disposition and temper begin to be visible in him. குணகுணி, s. [in gram. and log.] Attribute and subject--as in செந்தாமரை, where செம்மை is the attribute, குணம், and தாமரை the subject, குணி. குணகுணிப்பெயர்கள், s. [in gram.] Abstract noun and subjective noun. A virtuous man; lit. a mountain of excellent qualities. குணக்கேடு, s. Bad temper, bad disposition; disobliging, unkind, கெட்டகுணம். 2. Fatal symptoms in disease, அசாத்தியக் குறி. குணக்கேடன்--குணங்கெட்டவன்--கு ணமில்லாதவன், s. An ill-natured person. குணங்காட்ட, inf. To exhibit natural characteristic qualities, dispositions or propensities. 2. To betray symptoms-as diseases; to indicate good or bad weather--as seasons. 3. To betray mean descent, low caste, &c., by mean behavior. குணங்குறி, s. Disposition, features, characteristics, குணமுங்குறியும். குணங்குறியறிய, inf. To know one's disposition and character. குணங்குறியுள்ளவன், s. A man of good disposition, and other good characteristics. குணசந்தி, s. [in gram.] A form of combining words of Sanscrit origin-as சுர and இந்திரன், make சுரேந்திரன், வடமொ ழிச்சத்தியிலொன்று. குணசாலி, s. A good-natured man or woman; one of an excellent disposition. குணசீலன், s. One abounding in excellent qualities. குணசுபாவம்--குணப்பிரகிருதி, s. Natural disposition. குணஷ்டை, s. Delinquency, defect, flaw, குணதோஷம். 2. Difficulty, trouble, தொந்தரை. குணத்தன்மை, s. [in rhet.] Description of qualities, one of the four subdivisions of தன்மையலங்காரம். குணத்திரயம், s. [in Christian usage.] To be converted, to repent, to be penitent, மனந்திரும்ப. குணப்படுத்த, inf. v. a. To improve, to make better, to correct, to reform, to restore to a good state, to health, &c.; to remedy, சீர்திருத்த. 2. To convert, மனந்திரும்பச்செய்ய. குணப்பட்டவன், s. [in Christian usage.] One who has repented; a convert. குணப்பண்பு, s. [in gram.] Sensible qualities of objects--as bitterness, whiteness--as distinguished from குறிப்புப்பண்பு, ideal quality, and தொழிற்பண்பு, acting quality. See பண்பு. குணப்பிழை, s. Ill nature, bad temper or disposition, குணக்கேடு. 2. Ill success, பயனின்மை. 3. Unfavorable signs in disease, &c., அசாத்தியம். குணப்பெயர், s. Names either concrete or connotating, derived from abstractnouns --as கரியன், அழகன். குணமணி, s. One of an excellent disposition. குணமறிய, inf. To know one's disposition. 2. To understand or ascertain the symptoms of a disease. குணமாக்க, inf. v. a. To cure, heal; to restore to health. 2. To reform, to amend, to correct. குணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be whole, well, sound; to be well-conditional. 2. To be gratifying, pleasing, palatable. குணம்மாற, inf. To change--as temper, disposition, character, symptoms, either for the better or worse. குணமுங்குற்றமும், s. Good and bad, virtues and vices, beauties and defects, commendation and censure, &c. குணமுடையவன்--குணமுள்ளவன், s. A kind-hearted, good-natured, generous man. 2. A well-bred man. குணமுற்றவன், s. A good-natured man. குணமுற்றவன் மணமுற்றவன்; குணமற்றவன் மண மற்றவன். A good-natured man will be praised; but an ill-natured man, despised. குணரத்தினாகரன், s. A well-disposed person; one of a good disposition. குணவவநுதி, s. [in rhet.] A kind of அவநூதி figure, in which a prorperty or quality universally predicated of an object is apparently denied, by affirming the opposite, either ironically or ambiguously. குணவாகடம்--குணபாடல், s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A species of simile; similitude, of qualities and properties. See பண்புவமை. குணன், s. A man of good qualities, generally found in compounds--as in அறுகுணன், சற்குணன். குணாதீதம், s. Freedom from all properties, குணங்கடந்துநிற்கை. குணாதீதன், s. God, He who is above all attributes; He whose attributes and perfections transcend our comprehension, கடவுள். Wils. p. 292. A good disposition, kindness, benevolence, virtue. சற்குணன்--சற்குணி, s. A virtuous person; a good-natured person. சாத்தியகுணம், s. [in medi.] The condition or state of being curable; favorable symptoms; hopeful case. குணி, s. One endowed with good qualities, a good-tempered person, நற்குண முடையான். 2. [in gram.] A subject, any thing which possesses attributes or qualities--as distinguished from குணம், also, the names of such things, பண்பி. 3. [ex குணம், bow-string.] A bow, வில். (சது.) குணிப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. The four prevalent or prominent human qualities. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them. The enumeration of பரிமேலழகர், the commentator of the Cural, as agreeing with the Agamas, is:--1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், self-existence, independence. 2. தூயவுடம்பினனாதல், immaculateness. 3. இயற்கையுணர்வினனாதல், intuitive wisdom. 4. முற்றுமுணர்தல், omniscience. 5. இயல்பாகவே பாசங்களினீங்கிநிற் றல், freedom from the snares and illusions to which a derived intelligence is exposed. 6. பொருளுடைமை, unbounded kindness. 7. முடிவிலாற்றலுடைமை, omnipotence. 8. வரம்பிலின்பமுடைமை, infinite happiness. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)

[com. சரீரசுரணை.] Sense of feeling in the body. சரீரத்திரயம், s. A three-fold enumeration of bodies, as given in the Agama. 1. தூலசரீரம், the gross body which perishes at death. 2. சூக்குமசரீரம், the subtile or ethereal body, or case and immediate organ of the soul, accompanying that through its various transmigrations. It is the embryo or seed of the respective bodies assumed to be, and is, capable of sensations in enjoyment, suffering, &c., beyond those of the grosser body. 3. காரணசரீரம், the original type or embryo of the body, as existing with the soul in its original state. Another three-fold classification describes bodies as assumed by the soul with its சூக்குமம் adapted to three different states to which it is subject, namely. 1. யாதனாசரீரம், a body adapted to suffering, assigned to the soul for its abode in the infernal regions. 2. பூத னாசரீரம், a body capable of the sensual felicities of சுவர்க்கம், or the abode of Indra. 3. பரிணாமசரீரம், changeable bodies, the bodies of the present state, in which moral actions are performed. சரீரநோய், s. Pains in the body from over exertion, walking, cold, &c. சரீரபுஷ்டி, s. Corpulency. 2. A healthy, thriving state of the body. சரீரப்போக்கு--சரீரப்போங்கு, s. The state of the body; different states of constitution. சரீரமரணம், s. [in Christ. usage.] Death of the body, oppo. to ஆத்துமமரணம், spiritual death. சரீரவதை, s. Mortifying the body by austere penance. சரீரவாகு--சரீரவாக்கு, s. The temperament of the body. சரீரவுபாதி, s. Bodily pain. சரீரவுறவு, s. Consanguinity, oppo. to ஞானவுறவு. (p.) சரீராவச்சின்னவான்மா, s. The individuated soul as it exists in bodies respectively--as distinguished or detached from the universal spirit, சீவான்மா; [ex சரீரம், et அவச்சின்னம், separated.] (சது.) சரீரி, s. A sentient soul, a corporeal being--oppo. to அசரீரி, an immaterial existence. சுகசரீரம், s. A healthy constitution, in which the three humors are in equilibrium. தூலீத்தசரிரம், s. To deceive. சாலவித்தை, s. Sorcery, magic. 2. The exercise of the சாலம் art. பதிசத்திசாலங்கள், s. The various combinations of the male and female principles of deity. See பதி. பாசசாலம், s. சீவன்
cīvaṉ (p. 191) s. Life, vitality, the vital principle, உயிர். 2. The sentient soul; according to the Vedantic system, the emanation of the deity incorporated with the body, giving it life, motion and sensation; hence also called, சீவாத்துமா. It is opposed to the abstract state of the soul, or as identified with deity, பரமாத்துமா.--Note. According to the Agamas, the soul is eternal, but destined to obsorption in the deity, which is the ultimate object in view in furnishing it with bodies, and with various means for its illumination. 3. A living being, an animal, சீவசெந்து. 4. A name of Jupiter, வியாழம். 5. A magnet, காந்தம். (R.) 6. (fig.) Energy, spirit, life, animation, முயற்சி--used in the negative form. W. p. 351. JEEVA. சீவனும்பிராணனுமாயிருக்கிறார்கள். They are closely united, (lit.) as the life and the vital airs. சீவன்வந்தது. Life is restored--spoken of one whose fears are banished. நடக்கச்சீவனில்லை. Not life enough to walk. படிப்போடேசீவனைவிடுகிறான். He spends his life in learning. எனக்குப்பசியினாற்சீவன்போகிறது. I am ready to die of hunger. சீவனுண்டாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak aloud. சீவனைக்கொடுக்க, inf. To impart life. 2. To prolong life--as pretended by one possessed. 3. To sacrifice one's life for another. 4. To save one from ruin, by giving the means of subsistence. 5. To inspire one with courage, தைரியப்ப டுத்த. சீவனைமாய்த்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To commit suicide, to lay violent hands on one's self. சீவனைவாங்க, inf. To take away life. 2. (fig.) To put one to great hardships. சீவனோடிருக்க, inf. To be alive, to live. சீவனோடுகூடியகாரியம், s. [prov.] (in divination.) A question, or matter connected with life, or with a living being. 2. A thing of vital importance. கிழட்டுச்சீவன்--கிழச்சீவன், s. An old person, man or woman. சீவன்முத்தன், s. (in Agama phil.) The soul freed from பாசம் before the death of the body, and no longer subject to births. (சிவ. போ.) 31)
