āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

kuṟukku (p. 132) s. That which is athwart, across, transverse, in a cross, direction, திரியக்கு. 2. Diameter, intersection; transit, விட்டம். 3. Frustration; check, hinderance, எதிர். 4. Shortness, briefness, சுருக்கம். 5. Intervention, இடையீடு. 6. The hips, the loins, இடுப்பு. குறுக்கீடாகப்போக, inf. To go across. குறுக்குக்கட்டுக்கட்ட, inf. To tie the cloth a little above the breasts, and around the trunk--as women often do. குறுக்குக்கேள்வி--குறுக்குவினா, s. Cross questioning, cross examination. 2. Irrelevant questions. குறுக்குச்சட்டம், s. A cross piece in a frame. 2. Braces to connect the pairs of refters. 3. A cross beam. குறுக்குச்சார், s. [prov.] A short or cross side of a native house; a raised floor on the outside or inside of the shorter wall of a native house. குறுக்குப்பாடு, v. noun. Lying across, or in a transverse direction, குறுக்கிடம். 2. A transverse direction, குறுக்கு. குறுக்குப்பாதை--குறுக்குவழி, s. A cross path, a short cut. குறுக்கும்மறுக்கும்--குறுக்குநெடுக்கும், adv. Cross-wise, transversely, passing through and through in every direction. குறுக்கே, adv. Cross-wise, transversely, athwart. 2. Between, intermediately. 3. In opposition or contradiction. குறுக்கேதடுக்க, inf. To interpose and prevent--as a by-stander. 2. To meet a person, stop him and forbid his proceeding. 3. To check, prevent, obstruct, stop, interrupt. குறுக்கேபோக, inf. To go across; to go a short way. 2. To cross one's track, or path--as a cat, &c., considered a bad omen. 3. To pass between persons or things. 4. To die prematurely and in the prime of life. 5. To transgress one's commands; to go or act against one's wishes, counsel, &c. குறுக்கிட, inf. To come across--as animals of bad omen. 2. To interfere. குறுக்களவு, s. Dimension across; thickness; the diameter. 2. The extent or measure of any line or direction parallel wit the diameter. குறுக்கடி, s. A precipitate step or measure; a rash course; a contrary or contradictory procedure. 2. A short, hasty, abrupt or crabbed answer; an assertion without due deliberation. 3. A stroke at one's loins. குறுக்கடிநியாயம், s. Abrupt, inconclusive reasoning. குறுக்கடியாயடிக்க, inf. To speak, pronounce, conclude, &c., too hastily; to be precipitate, or rash. 2. To be too summary in a proceeding--little used. குறுக்குப்புத்தி, s. [prov.] Headiness, rashness, கோணற்புத்தி. குறுக்குச்சூத்திரம், s. A formula, theorem or rule expressing the shortest method of performing a calculation, &c.; a brief, con.prehensive rule. குறுக்கேமடக்க, inf. [prov.] To confute or refute at once; to stop one's mouth by short answer. குறுக்கேமுறிக்க, inf. To break into two. 2. To break off in the midst of a business; to leave a work unfinished. 3. To leave a company in displeasure. குறுக்கேவிழ--குறுக்கேவர, inf. To interfere, intermeddle. 35)

kompu (p. 146) s. The horn of a beast, விலங்கின்கொம்பு. 2. A branch, மரக்கொம்பு. 3. The foot-stalk or stem of a flower, பூங் கொம்பு. (p.) 4. A narrow stick; a staff, pole, கோல். 5. A musical instrument; a cornet, horn, ஊதுகொம்பு. 6. A tusk of an elephant or hog, யானைமுதலியவற்றின்தந்தம். 7. The curllike symbol in certain compound characters--as in நெ, பொ, &c., அக்கரத்தின்கோடு. 8. The bent front pole of a palankeen, சிவி கையின்கொம்பு. 9. (fig.) Eminence, greatness, மேன்மை. 1. (loc.) The outlet of a tank, ஏரிக்கோடி. பறக்குங்குருவிக்கு இருக்குங்கொம்புதெரியாது, பரதே சிக்குத்தங்குமிடந்தெரியாது. The migrating bird knows not the branch on which it may roost; and the pilgrim known not his halting place. பழுத்தபழங்கொம்பிலிராது. The ripe fruit remains not on the branch; i. e., at the appointed time, the event will happen. பிடித்தகொம்புமொடிந்துமிதித்தகொம்புமுறிந்தாற்போ லானேன். I was like a man in whose hands and under whose feet the branches had given way; i. e. I was without support. கொம்புசுற்றிக்காற்றடிக்கிறது. The wind blows and whirls around every branch. ஏதுகொம்புமுளைத்துவிட்டதோ. Have his horns grown? used when a person shows pride,insubordination, &c. கொம்படிக்க, inf. To butt--as oxen, buffaloes, rams, goats, &c. 2. (fig.) To assume authority, to be supercilious. கொம்பனையாள்--கொம்பனாள், s. She whose waist is as tender and narrow as the stem of flower. (p.) கொம்பன், s. A tusked elephant or other beast. 2. A kind of cholera or small-pox. கொம்பன்சுறா, s. The sword fish, (lit.) the horned shark. கொம்பாள், s. [loc.] A man looking out from a tree. Sometimes கொம்பத்தாள். கொம்புத்தேன், s. [prov கொப்பாந் தேன்.] Honey formed by bees on branches. கொம்புப்பயறு, s. A kind of pulse. கொம்புப்பாகல்--கொம்பன்பாகல். A kind of winding பாகல் creeper. கொம்பாடவிடான். He suffers no one else to take the lead; assumes too much. கொம்பேறிமூர்க்கன்-கொம்பேறிமூக்கன், s. [loc.] A long dangerous snake living in trees. அசைக்கொம்பு--ஆடுகொம்பு--தோற் கொம்பு, s. A moveable horn fixed in the skin. கடைக்கொம்பு--உளிக்கொம்பு, s. Stump of a horn. கவர்க்கொம்பு--கவட்டைக்கொம்பு-கிளைக்கொம்பு, s. A branched horn. திருகுகொம்பு--முறுக்குக்கொம்பு, s. Winding or tortuous horn. மட்டைக்கொம்பு--விரிகொம்பு, s. Horns extended on both sides. முகக்கொம்பு--முன்கொம்பு, s. Horns setting down towards the ground. மோழைக்கொம்பு, s. Horns hindered from growing by being burnt. உச்சிக்கொம்பன், s. A beast with perpendicular horns near together. ஏந்துகொம்பன், s. An elephant with curved tusks. 2. An ox with horns rising abruptly and projecting forward at the points. ஒற்றைக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant with one tusk, the other being broken. 2. Ganésa. See ஒற்றை. கணைக்கொம்பன், s. An ox with stunted horns. கிளிக்கொம்பன், s. See under கிளி. கூடுகொம்பன், s. An ox whose horns come near together at the points. கூர்ங்கொம்பன், s. Sharp-horned ox. கூழைக்கொம்பன், s. An ox with stubbed horns. நாரைக்கொம்பன், s. [prov.] An ox with long white horns. பவளக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant whose tusks resemble coral in color. பிடிக்கொம்பன், s. Short-horned beast. மாடைக்கொம்பன், s. A bullock with horns bent backwards. முத்துக்கொம்பன், s. An elephant whose tusks, in color, resemble pearl. விரிகொம்பன், s. An ox with spreading horns. கொம்புக்காரன், s. [prov. கொம்பூதி.] A horn blower. கொம்புக்கால், s. The ெ with ா--as ெ-ா, with க--making கொ. கொம்புகாலி, s. [prov.] A palankeen bearer; a term of reproach. கொம்புப்பிறை, s. A கொம்பு with a பிறை--as ெ and with ன making னொ. கொம்பூத--கொம்புபிடிக்க, inf. To blow a horn. கொம்புமுளைத்தவன்--கொம்பாபிள்ளை, s. [ironically.] A man of rank, wealth. 94)

crēreṉl (p. 168) --சரேலெனல், v. noun. Being direct, abrupt, without impediment or hesitation; being precipitant or hasty; passing swiftly with a hurried rushing sound, விரைவுக்குறிப்பு. Compare சரசரெனல். சரேரென்றுபோ. Go directly without stopping by the way. சரேரென்றுவா. Come quickly. முள்ளுச்சரேரென்றேறிவிட்டது. The thorn went in far at once, &c. 18)

tkkeṉl (p. 221) v. noun. Being sudden, abrupt, as the falling of a thing dropped; sounding as a thing falling, ஒலிக்குறிப்பு. (c.) 12) *

tiṭīreṉl (p. 238) v. noun. Being sudden, abrupt, unexpected, சீக்கிரக்குறிப்பு. 2. Sounding as heavy thumping, beating of waves, ஒலிக்குறிப்பு. (c.) திடீரென, inf. [adverbially.] Promptly, suddenly, abruptly, precipitantly, hastily. திடீரென்றுவந்தான். He came suddenly. திடீரென்றுசொல்லிப்போட்டான். He spoke rashly, unpremeditatedly. 2. He spoke promptly. திடீர்திடீரெனல், v. noun. Reiteration of a thumping sound, as waves beating against the shore, or fruits falling in rapid succession from high trees. 2)

tiṭutiṭu (p. 238) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To make a reiterated noise, as hasty steps; to rumble, as a carriage, to thump constantly, தடதடக்க. 2. [prov.]. To beat, throb, palpitate, as the heart through fear, துடிக்க. (c.) திடுதிடெனல், v. noun. Succeeding each other rapidly as reiterated sounds, சீக் கிரக்குறிப்பு. 2. Moving with noise, rattling, rumbling--as several carriages; to sound in succession--as claps of thunder, ஈரடுக்கொலிக்குறிப்பு. 3. Running or going fast with quick reiterated steps--as a troop, விசையோடுசெல்லல். 4. Entering abruptly, intruding, சடிதியாய்வருதல். (c.) திடுதிடென்றோடுகிறான். He runs fast, with quickly reiterated steps. 2. He runs in without stopping at the door. 10)

nil (p. 277) நிற்கிறேன், நின்றேன், நிற்பேன், நிற்க, v. n. To stand, செங்குத்தாய்நிற்க. 2. To stand still; to stop, halt, tarry, தரிக்க. 3. To abide, endure, continue, தங்க. 4. To cease, be discontinued, stopped, suspended, ஒழிய. 5. To be steadfast, to preserve, persist in a course of conduct, நிலைநிற்க. 6. To remain, be left--as matter in a boil, as disease, &c., to be left--as matter in a boil, as disease, &c., to be left due, நிலுவைநிற்க 7. To be, be in, have a lodging, or residence; to exercise functions, as the senses through their appropriate organs; to be situated as a planet; continue, as any of the four astrological times, viz: திதி, யோ கம், கரணம்,நட்சத்திரம், தத்தந்தானத்திருக்க. 8. To be suspended, postponed, adjourned, தாமதிக்க. (c.) ஒருபொருள்நிற்கிறகாலம். The time during which a thing may last. இந்தமருந்துக்கந்தவியாதிநிற்கும். The disease will yield to this medicine. பொழுதுநிற்கவா. Come while the sun lasts. அவனுக்குபாடம்நிற்கிறது. The lesson is well learnt by him. 2. He has a good memory. செல்வம்நில்லாது. Prosperity is not permanent. நின்றதுநிற்கப்புறப்பட்டார். He set out abruptly. நின்றநாளைக்குமுதலும்வட்டியும். The principal with the interest for the time it was in hand. நின்றநிலையிலேநில்லாதே. Don't continue standing. தெய்வம்நின்றுகொல்லும். God is slow in punishing men. அதுநிற்க. To let that be; [a form of expression used in reverting to another point.] கேட்டுநிற்க, inf. To go immediately. 2. To come to an end. நின்று, v. part. Standing, &c. It is used like இருந்து to express from, as வீட்டில் நின்றுவந்தான்; he came from the house. நின்றுபோதல், v. noun. To be severe, as disease, be abundant as rain, உரக்க. நெருக்கிவை. Put (them) close together. நெருக்கிஇரு. Sit close. நெருக்கடி, v. noun. Oppression, tyranny. 2. Hardship, difficulty. 3. Force, restraint, coercion, compulsion. நெருக்கட்டியெனல்--நெறுக்கட்டியெ னல், v. noun. [loc. நருக்கட்டியெனல்.] Being sudden, abrupt, சீக்கிரக்குறிப்பு. 2. Snapping off suddenly as a stick, தெ றித்தல். 3. Being prompt, quick, instantaneous, விரைவாய்முறிதல். 4. Falling suddenly, with a crash, &c., ஒலித்துவி ழுதல். நெருக்கி, [v. participle, as an adv.] Closely, often, too much, too fast, &c. புகையிலையைநெருக்கிக்குடிக்கிறான்......He smokes tobacco too much. நெருக்கிச்சாப்பிட, inf. To eat very often. 2. [in burlesque.] To eat to excess. நெருக்கிடை, s. Oppression, tyranny. 2. Severity, intensity, vehemence, prevalence as of a disease, a famine, &c. 3. Straits, adversity, affliction. 4. Persecution. 5. Compulsion, force, constraint, coercion, restraint. நெருக்கிடைபண்ண, inf. To opprss one, &c., as நெருக்கப்படுத்த. நெருக்கிடைப்பட, inf. To be distressed, to suffer. 2. To be in want. நெருக்கிப்பார்க்க, inf. To take pains; to try. நெருக்கிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To come close in pursuit, overtake. 2. [in burlesq.] To eat too fast, too much, &c. கரைநெருக்கிப்பிடிக்க-கரைக்குநெருக்கிப்பிடிக்க. To ply, or sail toward the shore. நெருக்கியடிக்க, inf. To compel, urge, press hard. நெருக்கியோட, inf. [caus. நெருக்கி யோட்ட.] To pursue of follow closely. நெருக்கிவருதல், v. noun. Coming, occurring, &c., very often, frequenting. நெருக்கு, v. noun. Pressure, importunity, hard treatment, compulsion, severity, throng, contusion, bruise, &c., as the verb. நெருக்குண்ண, inf. To be pressed, crowded, thronged, &c. நெருக்குவாரம், s. [prov.] Compulsion, constraint, oppression, persecution, straits, calamity, severity, vehemence, as நெருக்கு. The compounds are of Jaffna usage. 98)

nerukkeṉ (p. 279) inf. [as an adv. also நருக் கென.] Suddenly, immediately, promptly. நெருக்கெனவா. Come quickly, return immediately. நெருக்கெனல், v. noun. [com. நருக்கெ னல்.] Being sudden, abrupt, instantaneous. 99)

palli (p. 302) s. Newt, or wall-lizard,கௌளி. (Lacerta Geeko.) 2. A herdsman's village, சிற்றூர். (See பள்ளி.) W. p. 519 PALLI. 3. Shoot or tendril from the joints of the betel-plant, கணுவிலரும்பும்வேர். 4. See பல். For some compounds, See கெவுளி, கௌளி. பல்லிபோல்தடுக்கிறான். He stops my going as abruptly and ominously as the chirp of a lizard. பல்லிக்குஞ்சு, s. A young lizard. பல்லிசொல்லுதல், v. noun. Chirping of lizards, a prognostication. பல்லியெச்சம், s. Excrement of lizards. பல்லிவிழுகுறி, s. An omen by the fall of a lizard, lucky or unlucky according to the direction whence it falls. 18) *

poṭṭeṉl (p. 336) v. noun. Being sudden, abrupt, quick, nimble, சீக்கிரக்குறிப்பு. பொட்டெனவந்தான். He came quickly, promptly. 103)

vēṇṭu (p. 402) கிறேன், வேண்டினேன், வேன், வேண்ட, v. a. To beg, entreat, beseech, மன்றாட. 2. To approve, to like, விரும்ப. 3. To want, to need--Note. In this latter sense it is principally a defective or impersonal verb. It is conjugated, as வேண் டுகிறது. it is necessary; வேண்டிற்று, was necessary; வேண்டும், com. வேணும், will be necessary; negative, வேண்டாம், com. வே ணாம்; rela. part. வேண்டுகிற, வேண்டிய, வே ண்டின. எனக்கதுவேணும். I want it. நீசீக்கிரமாய்வரவேணும். You must come in haste. உனக்கென்னவேண்டும். What do you want? அவன்உனக்கென்னவேணும். What relation does he bear to you? வேண்டாது--வேண்டாதே--வேண்டா மல். Not wanting. வேண்டாதுபோனான். He went away displeased. வேண்டாத்தலையன், s. An abrupt man. வேண்டாமை, s. Aversion, dislike. வேண்டார், appel. n. Foes, பகைவர். வேண்டாவெறுப்பு, v. noun. Unwillingness, indifference. வேண்டி, v. part. Being wanted. 2. [as a prepos.] With, for the sake of. வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. It is wanted. வேண்டியதாயிருக்கவில்லை. Is it not required. என்னத்தைவேண்டி. With what object? என்னைவேண்டி. For my sake. வேண்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To solicit, to pray. வேண்டியகாரியம், s. Needful things. வேண்டியசகாயம், s. All needed help. வேண்டியழைக்க, inf. To invite with desire. வேண்டியமட்டும். As much as is wanted. வேண்டுமானபோது. Whenever you want. வேண்டல்--வேண்டுதல், v. noun. Desiring, supplicating, begging. 20) *
