āñcāṉ (p. 37) s. [in seamen's language.] A halliard or rope for hoisting a sail, கப் பற்கயிறு. 2. A rope for lifting weights with a pulley or otherwise, a hawser, கயிறு. 3. The lone, slender stem of a tree, சிறியதனிக் கொப்பு; [ex ஆசை.] (c.) ஆஞ்சான்பற்றி, s. A beam across the stern of a dhoney to which the halliard, &c. is tied. சின்னஆஞ்சான், s. āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. ūṭu (p. 69) s. [as உள்.] The inside, that which is intermediate, between, நடு. (சத. 18.) 2. [vul.] Wool, thread woven across the warp, தார்நூல்.--Note. Commonly ஊடு as an affix governs the dative--as அவர்களுக்கூடேவந்தான், he came between them. இந்தஅலுவல்களுக்கூடேயிதையுமெப்படிச்செய்வே ன். How can I possibly do this in the midst of so much business? கனவூடும். Even in a dream-- (பார.) ஊடறுக்க, inf. To cut through, separate and pass through, cleave, to sunder--as an arrow; to force one's way through people, jungle, beasts, &c., உள்ளறுக்க. 2. To determine between two parties, to decide differences, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடாட, inf. To go about--as a domestic in a house, அகத்திலுலாவித்திரிய. 2. To frequent, பலகாற்பயில. 3. Friendship with the base is like a hard block thrown against the knee. மயிரூடாடாநட்புச்சிறிதுபொருளுடாடக்கெடும்... Friendship so close as not to admit of even a hair-like interruption may be destroyed by pecuniary dealings. ஊடாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search, examine, &c., to look into, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. கல்வியிலூடாடிப்பார். Look into learning, learn. ஊடாட்டம், v. noun. Familiarity, intercourse, intimacy, பழகுகை. ஊடாட்டம்பண்ண, inf. To be born with the cord of the placenta round the neck--deemed ominous to the maternal uncle. கொடிச்சூரை, s. A creeper species of சூரை. கொடித்திரும்ப, inf. To pass the meridian--spoken of the sun or other heavenly body. கொடித்திரும்பினவுடனே. [prov.] As soon as the sun has passed the meridian. கொடித்தட்டு, v. noun. A contention with tow paper kites to see which will cut the other. கொடித்தக்காளி, s. A kind of creeping plant, ஓர்செடி. கொடித்திருப்பாடகம், s. canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. W. p. 889. SANDHI. 6. Reconciliation, pacification, forming friendship, நட்பாதல். 7. The bamboo, so called from its knots, மூங்கில். 8. The stated worship for each individual, morning and evening, and with some in mid-day, சந்தியாவந்தனம். (p.) 9. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. The decalogue. தசதானம், s. Gifts to brahmans, made in the last extremity, as a passport to the other world; or by princes, and other great men, daily; by some also when a daughter is given in marriage, பத்துத்தானம். [in astrol.] Ten points in which there should be agreement in the horoscope of the bride and bridegroom. 1. நாள், in the lunar asterism or lunar day of birth. 2. கணம், in the three-fold division of the lunar asterisms, தேவர், இராட்சதர், and மனிதர், nine being ascribed to each, and a preference given where both are not in the same division. 3. மாகேந்திரம், in the rising sign, and the fourth, seventh or tenth. (See கேந்தி ரம்.) 4. திரிதீர்க்கம், in the asterism at the birth of the bridegroom which should be above that of the bride. 5. யோனி, in genital characteristics, ascribed to the lunar constellations. 6. இராசி, in the zodiacal signs, in which after the sixth of the bridegroom, his should be above the bride's. 7. அதிபதி, in the rulers of the signs which are the seven planets. 8. வசியம், in the respective zodiacal signs one with another. 9. வேதம், தாலிப்பொருத்தம் or மங்கிலியக்கயிறு, in the astrological circles, in no one of which should both be found. 1. இரச்சு, in lines drawn across the circles in any one of which, both persons should not be found. தசப்பொருத்தம்--செய்யுட்பொருத்தம், s.
