aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். An affix of interrogation, வினா--as விழித்தானா? is he awake? 1. The termination of the neg. neut. plural of verbs, எதிர்மறை யஃறிணைப் பன்மைவி குதி--as, அவைசெல்லா, they will not go. 11. A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)

A small tube through which the yarn is conducted from the spindle of a spinning wheel to a machine, நூலிழைக்குங்கருவிகளிலொன்று. 6. A small particle used in soldering metals, பற்றாசு. 7. A mark or butt, இலக்கு. (c.) 8. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்விதபாஷாணம். (p.) ஆசிட, inf. [in poetry.] To affix either one or two syllables to the third foot of the second line of an ஆசிடைவெ ண்பா. 2. To cement the particles of gold, &c. ஆசிடையிட்டெதுகை--ஆசெது கை, s. The consonance of the second and third letters in each line of a stanza, with this license, that one of the four consonants ய், ர், ல், ழ், inserted after the first letter of the first line, is omitted after the first letter of the second line, and vice versa. ஓரெதுகை--as வாய்ந்தமின்னை மடந்தையராக்கிவிண் போந்திடாமலன்றோ, &c. ஆசிடைவெண்பா, s. A வெண்பா of four lines in general, to the penultimate foot of the second line of which ஆசு is affixed, ஆசிடையிட்டவெண்பா. ஆசுமணை, s. A flat, oblong board with ten pins, on which the yarn is made into skeins. 2) *

An assembly of women, female attendants on a lady, மாதர்கூட்டம். 6. A female companion, தோழி. 7. Mother, தாய். 8. Bow-string, நாணி. 9. A kind of drum, மல்லரி. 1. Length, extension, நீளம். (p.) ஆயத்துக்குள்ளேமாயம். A small gain in a small traffic. ஆயக்கட்டு, s. A deceitful fabrication, used with மாயக்கட்டு. 2. The total extent of land in a district. (c.) ஆயக்கட்டாகப்பேச, inf. To utter a falsehood so as to deteriorate one's character. ஆயக்காரன், s. A tax-gatherer, a custom-house officer, a publican, சுங்கம்வா ங்குவோன். ஆயத்தலம்--ஆயத்துறை, s. A custom-house, or place where toll is paid. ஆயந்தீர, inf. To pay toll or duty. ஆயம்வாங்க, inf. To take toll. 27)

ār (p. 41) . A termination of the third person plural of the rational class, பலர்பாற் படர்க்கைவிகுதி--as வந்தார், they came. Also honorific for the singular, as வந்தார். 2. It is sometimes affixed to a noun, as an additional termination, ஒருவனையுயர்த்திக்கூறுமிட த்துச்சேர்க்கப்படும்விகுதி--as தகப்பனார், father; தாயார், mother; காலனார், the god of death. 53)

āl (p. 43) . The chief form of the third case, or instrumental ablative--implying cause, agency, instrumentality, expressing by, by means of, with, by way of, in consequence of, மூன்றாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. 2. A poetic expletive, usually annexed to the finite verb, also to nouns, அசைச்சொல். 3. A form of the subjunctive, joined to the gerund, or in poetry, to the finite verb, expressing if, வினையெச்சவிகுதி. 4. An optative termination expressing may, let, &c., வியங்கோள் விகுதி. 5. A negative form of the optative--as அழால், don't weep. 6. A form of affirmation, for yes, ஆமெனல். This definition, though given in Saturagarady and Negundu, is not proved by examples. 7. A form of the third case, expressing each, every, distributively. (p.) நீவந்தால். If you come. நாடாமால். It is a country, or one's native land. ஊராலொருதேவகுலம். A temple in every country. மரீஇ யதோரால். May you know--or know --know you what has happened. வாளால்வெட்டினான். He cut with a sword. அரசனாலாகியமனை. A house built by the king. 6)

āḷi (p. 43) s. The lion as the king of beasts, சிங்கம். 2. A governor, a master, ஆள்வோன். 3. Leo the zodiacal sign, சிங்க விராசி. 4. A fabulous animal (the யாளி.) like a lion, but with a proboscis as an elephant. 5. A kind of seed, ஆளிவிதை. 6. An embankment, or boundary for keeping up water, செய்கரை. 7. Bank in general, கரைப்பொது. 8. [vul.] An oyster, மட்டி. 9. An appellative affix, mas. or fem. joined to nouns--implying a ruler, owner, manager, master, one who owns a thing, possesses a quality, &c.,--as from பகை is formed, பகையாளி. ஆளியூர்தி, s. Kali and Durga, so called because conveyed on an animal of the lion kind. 57)

āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். A word used by the learned ancients. மன்னுயிரோம்பியருளாள்வார். They who cherish and exercise charity toward all living. அல்லலருளாள்வார்க்கில்லை. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. A cow or bull appropriated to a temple, which is left to stray as it likes; such are well received and fed. 59)
