ākkm (p. 35) s. An abstract from ஆகு தல், or ஆக்குதல், indicating change from one state or quality to another--as in இவன் நல்லவனானான், he has become a good man. 2. Gain, profit, acquisition, இலாபம். 3. Wealth, prosperity, riches, fortune, affluence, செல்வம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. Lakshmi, இலக்குமி. 6. The front division of an army, கொடிப்படை. 7. Elevation, எழு ச்சி. 8. Enlargement, increase, பெருக்கம். (p.) ஆக்கச்சொல், s. A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

iẕu (p. 55) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To draw, pull, haul, drag, tug, drag to justice, to drag along the ground, ஈர்க்க. 2. To attract--as a magnet, ஊசி முதலியவீர்க்க. 3. To attract--as a snare, to entice, allure, inveigle, seduce, draw over to one's interests, வசமாக்க. 4. To strain, stretch, lengthen or attenuate by pulling, to draw out, நெடுகச்செய்ய. 5. To drag one into an affair, to cite, force one to court, &c., to drag one's name, &c. in support of an argument or practice, வலிகக. 6. To upbraid, drag out one's faults to view, to cast reproaches, insults, &c., புறத்திலிழு க்க. 7. To draw into, swallow up, engulph --as a stream, a whirl-pool, a whirl-wind, சுழித்துவாங்க. 7. To absorb--as a sponge, to absorb humors from the body, to draw-as a medicine or plaster, உறிஞ்ச. 8. To draw out the voice, lengthen the sound properly in singing, to draw in speaking, reading, &c., நீட்டிப்பேச. 9. To strain muscularly, distort the features or limbs in spasms, &c., to have the cramp, to be convulsed; in this sense, it is often used impersonally, வலியிழுக்க. 1. v. n. To linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. இழுத்துப்பாடு. Sing, dwelling on the notes. தாய்வருமளவும்பேச்சிழுத்தாள். She protracted, continued the conversation, till her mother came. அந்தவழக்குவெகுபணமிழுத்துப்போட்டது. That law-suit has swallowed up a great deal of money. காரியமிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகின்றது. The affair is protracted, the business is delayed, being involved in various intricacies. இப்படியிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநின்றாலொன்றுந்தீராது. If you protract the matter so carelessly, you cannot expect a happy result. வழக்கிலேயிழுத்துவிட்டார்கள். They have dragged the matter into court. ஊர்க்காரியங்களையிழுக்க To make a long story, unnecessarily talking of other people's affairs. உன்காரியத்திலென்னையிழாதே. Do not draw me into your affairs, as a witness, party, &c. காரியத்திலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறார்கள். They pull against or away from each other-as two parties, &c., they dissent, are unsettled (fig.), from the idea of two beasts tied together. இழுத்துக்கொண்டுவர, inf. To put off from day to day. என்கடனைத்தீர்க்காமலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகிறான். He delays to pay the debt he owes me. இழுத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak drawlingly. இழுத்துவலிக்க, inf. To draw in a rope, or cord--as attached to a net, paper-kite, &c. இழுத்துவிட, inf. To put off, to protract, to delay, continue putting off and never fulfilling. 2. To bring into court, indict, prosecute, expose to the public. மடியைப்பற்றியிழுக்க, inf. To seize one's lap and pull him. காலிழுத்துநடக்க, inf. To trail the leg in walking--as a lame man. இழுபறி, s. A scuffle, a struggle, strife, squabble, வாது. இழுப்பு, v. noun. Drawing, pulling, draught, a pull, a tug, a twitch, இழுக் கை. 2. Attracting, attraction, allurement, inviting, engaging. 3. Distortion of the limbs or features by convulsions, cramp, &c. 4. Absorption. 5. Draught or force of a current, wind, &c. 6. Procrastination, tardiness, protraction, suspense, uncertainty. The meanings of the verb generally are applicable also to the verbal noun. அதிலே முன்னிழுப்புப்பின்னிழுப்பில்லை. In that matter, there can be no dispute one way or the other. இழுப்பறை, s. A box in a case, a drawer. இழுப்பாட்டம், s. Tardiness, protraction, procrastination. இழுப்பாட்டியம், s. [prov.] Procrastination, protraction, tardiness, delay--used instead of இழுப்பாட்டம். இழுப்பாணி, s. [prov.] A delayer, postponer, lingerer. 2. A moveable peg that fastens the yoke to the beam of the plough. இழுப்புண்ண, inf. To be drawn unwillingly--as some persons when they are compelled to attend court; to be forced or dragged into an affair. 2. To be allured, seduced, decoyed; to be diverted from the business in hand, be tempted, be led away by lust, be ensnared, சிக்கிக்கொள்ள. இழுப்புப்பறிப்புப்பட, inf. [vul.] To scuffle, struggle, contend. 2. To pull one another--as persons intoxicated, or in play. இழுவல், v. noun. [prov.] The act of drawing. 2. Putting off, lingering, delaying, postponing. 3. One who neglects his own affairs and busies himself with those of others. அவனொரு இழுவல். He is a busy-body, drawn into every one's business. இழுவை, v. noun. A being drawn, draught, இழுப்பு. 2. Any thing drawn-as a draught of thorns, timbers, fishes, &c., இழுக்கப்பட்டவை. 3. A long rope for draught, இழுக்கும்வடம். 4. The mark or point made on the ground by a thing drawn, சுவடு. இழுவைகண்டாலடிப்பார்க்கிறதேன்? When the track in which the thing was dragged is plain, why look for footsteps? 37)

uriñu (p. 64) --உரிஞ்சு, கிறேன், உரிஞி னேன்--உரிஞ்சினேன், வேன், உரிஞ--உரிஞ்ச, v. n. and a. To rub one's self, rub as beasts, chafe, உராய. 2. To become rubbed or grazed against a thing, to be bruised, excoriated, grazed off, &c., தேய. 3. To rub against one another--as trees, உரோச. 4. To rub away, wear away by rubbing, grind away --as sandal, to triturate, அரைக்க. (p.) நறுங்குறடுரிஞ்சுபூந்தேய்வை. The soft paste produced by triturating the fragrant sandal wood. (நைட.) உவாமதியுடலுரிஞ்சுதலாற்பிள்ளைவெண்மதியாதனன் றென்பபெரிதவக்கும். The full moon grazing his body (in passing through the window) wished himself young again. (நைட.) 16)

urupu (p. 65) s. Form, shape, வடிவம். 2. [in grammar.] A class of particles comprising four kinds, viz.: 1. வேற்றுமையு ருபு, the particles which form the declensions. 2. வினையுருபு, those that form the inflections of verbs including three species, (a) விகுதி, verbal terminations. (b.) இடை நிலை, characteristics of tense and several other intervening particles in the formation of verbs, derivative nouns, &c. 3. சாரியை, auxiliary, component particles employed in the formation of the two classes of verbs. 4. ஒப்புருபு, particles of terms of comparison. 5. The relative participles, ஆகிய, ஆன, &c., affixed to nouns to make adjectives of them. உருபுத்தொகை, s. The suppression of the characteristics of the cases --as மரநுனி. உருபுப்புணர்ச்சி, s. Sand'hi--the union of the particles of inflections with nouns and pronouns, வேற்றுமையுருபுமுதலிய புணர்கை. உருபுமயக்கம், s. The use of one case for another--as the dative for the local ablative, &c., வேற்றுமையுருபுமாறுகை. அமுதம்பூவையைக்கிள்ளையையருத்தி. Feeding the minor and parrot with milk--here the objectives are used for the dative. (நைட.) உருபுமாலை, s. Declension of nouns. உருபுவிரி, s. The expression of the case--as மாத்தினுனி. உவமையுருபு, s. A particle of comparison--as மதிபோலுமுகம், face like the moon. சொல்லுருபு, s. The use of a word for a particle representing the case--as, தடிகொண்டடித்தான், He beat with a stick-here கொண்டு is used for ஆல்; அவனைக்காட் டிலும்வலியன். This person is more powerful than the other. 23) *

oṭukku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுக்க, v. a. To reduce, compress, bring into a narrower compass, condense, to lessen, bring down--as another's pride, to keep down, keep under, அடக்க. 2. To press, oppress, tyrannize, vex, வருத்த. 3. To reduce the system by medicine or a sparing diet, உடம்பையொடுக்க. 4. To involve one in another--as the elements, cause to disappear--as the worlds, &c., at the close of an age, பூதங்களைலயிக்கச்செய்ய. 5. To close, to finish as a work, the harvest, &c., முடிக்க. 6. To pack in, to put in, to put things close in a bag, a box or other receptacle, செறிக்க. உலகப்பற்றையொவ்வொன்றாயொடுக்க. To relinquish worldly attachments one by one. ஒடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To compress and tie a thing close. 2. To tuck up the skirts and fasten the end behind-as in wet weather. 3. To hem an ola basket, fan, &c. ஒடக்கித்தட்ட, inf. To make a metal utensil thicker and narrower by beating. ஒடுக்கித்தைக்க, inf. To make a garment smaller. ஒடுக்கிவெட்ட, inf. To hew timber reducing the breadth. ஒடுக்குவாய், s. Distorted mouth, கோணல்வாய். வீட்டையொடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To build a house narrow. உடம்பையொடுக்க, inf. To reduce the body by eating sparingly. 2. To contract the body--as a tiger, a cat, &c., to reduce the body to a smaller compass --as in a leaping, sneaking, or creeping posture. செலவையொடுக்க--செலவையொ டுக்கிப்பிடிக்க. inf. To retrench expenses. 2. To live frugally, sparingly, &c. வயிற்றையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the appetite, to reduce the quantity of food in order to save money. புலனையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the senses--as ascetics or otherwise; to mortify the senses, passions, &c. 2. To call home the thoughts and fix them on divine things. ஒடுக்கு, v. noun. Contracting, closing, compression, narrowness, அடக் கம். 2. s. A corner to creep into, இடுக்கு. ஒடுக்கிடம், s. A corner, a narrow or confined place, மூலை. 2. A recess, a hiding place, மறைவிடம். ஒடுக்குச்சீட்டு--ஒடுக்குத்துண்டு, s. A receipt given by government for money, வரிச்சீட்டு. பணவொடுக்கு, v. noun. [prov.] A remittance of money. 48)

oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. Absorption of the senses by sleep, syncope, the approach of death, &c., unconsciousness, stupor. 49)

A hypocrite, a dissembler, a feigner, மாயக்காரன். ஒப்பாசாரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To promise. ஒப்பாசாரம்பண்ண, inf. To make a contract. ஒப்பிட, inf. To use comparison, to liken, உவமிக்க. 2. To compare, to collate, ஒத்துப்பார்க்க. ஒப்பில்லாதது, appel. n. That which is incomparable, precious. ஒப்பில்லாதவன், appel. n. He who is incomparable--God. ஒப்பின்முடித்தல், v. noun. [in grammar.] An author's classing things together on account of some similarity among them, though of different species, 32-உத்தியிலொன்று. ஒப்பின்மை, s. Incomparableness, peerlessness. 2. To do a thing feignedly, merely to please others. ஒப்புக்குச்சொல்ல, inf. To say a thing, or to invite one merely out of compliment, to say for form's sake. ஒப்புக்குவணங்க, inf. To make obeisance, or to worship hypocritically, or for form's sake. ஒப்புக்கொடுக்க, inf. To deliver, consign, make over, to surrender, devote, ஒப்புவிக்க. நீயொப்புக்கொடுக்கவுமில்லை நானொப்புக்கொள் ளவுமில்லை. Thou hast not given it to me, nor have I received it. அக்கினிக்கொப்புக்கொடுக்க, inf. To make an offering to the god of fire, as in marriage ceremonies. 2. To consign to the fire. ஒப்புக்கொள்ள, inf. To receive, take charge of, ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள. 2. To admit, grant, allow, assent, agree to, ஒத் துக்கொள்ள. 3. To be pleased, or satisfied in regard to an object or thing, திருத் திபொருந்த. ஒப்புக்கொண்டுறுதிப்படுத்திக்கொண்டார்கள். They consented to and confirmed it. கிழவிக்கொன்றுமொப்புக்கொள்ளவில்லை. The old woman is pleased with nothing. உத்தியோகத்தையொப்புக்கொள்ள. To enter upon, or succeed another in an office. கோட்டையையொப்புக்கொண்டான். maṇṭalam (p. 341) s. Circle, sphere, orbit, disc, வட்டம். 2. Disc of the sun or moon. 3. A great circle--as the equator or ecliptic, கிராந்திமண்டலம். 4. A region, world-as of the sun, moon, or clouds, as சத்த மண்டலம். 5. Any circular, or elliptical figure, வலயம். 6. Coil, as of a snake or rope, பாம்புச்சுற்று. W. p. 633. MAN'DALA. 7. These are; 1. வாயுமண்டலம், of wind; 2. வருணமண்டலம், of water; 3. சந்திரமண்டலம், of the moon; 4. சூரியமண்டலம், of the sun; 5. நட்சத்திர மண்டலம், of the stars; 6. அக்கினிமண்ட லம், of Agni, fire; 7. திரிசங்குமண்டலம், of திரிசங்கு or the Southern cross; which see. மண்டலநிலை, s. The second of the four attitudes in archery. See நிலை. மண்டலமழை, s. Rain extending through the country. மண்டலம்போட--மண்டலமிட, inf. To form into circles or coils, as a snake. 2. To pass round one another--as combatants, or as birds, &c., in a circle, சுற்றிச்சுற்றிவர. 3. To make ornamental, astrological or mystic diagrams, commonly of a circular figure, யந்திரம்வகுக்க. மண்டலவிதி, s. Directions for making diagrams, for worship, &c. மண்டலபுருடன், s. [also called வீரமண் டலவன்.] A Jaina ascetic equally eminent as a poet and lexicographer. His poetic lexicon சூடாமணிநிகண்டு, outshines all similar productions in Tamil. He also wrote an epic poem in honor of Argha, ஓர்நிகண்டாசிரியன். மண்டலாகாரம், s. A circular figure, course, &c., வட்டவடிவம். மண்டலாபிஷேகம், s. A daily anointing of an idol for forty days, after the கும்பாபிஷேகம் or other ceremony. மண்டலார்த்தம், s. Semicircle, அர்த்த கோளம். 2. Semidiameter, பாதிவிட்டம். மண்டலீகர், s. [pl.] Kings, sovereigns of a limited reign, அரசர். (சது.) மண்டலேசன், s. An emperor, an independent monarch, உலகாதிபதி; [ex ஈசன்.] மண்டலேசுரன்--மண்டலேச்சுவரன், s. An independent sovereign. 2. A monarch who governs a country forty yojana in length, and forty in breadth; or containing over 1, hamlets. 34) *
