urppu (p. 63) கிறேன், உரப்பினேன், வே ன், உரப்ப, v. n. and a. To whoop, vociferate inarticulately or otherwise--as in driving cattle, scaring away birds, beasts, or human beings, to menace or intimidate by shouts, to bluster, shout, call, அதட்ட. 2. To urge forward beasts of burden with shouts, துரத்த. 3. (p.) To pronounce with aspiration, as the second letter in each of the five series of Sanscrit gutterals, உரத் தொலிக்க. ஆனையையுரப்பிலிடு. Frighten away, or drive the elephants along. ஒருவரேயெதிரினிங்ஙனுரப்பியேதுரப்பர். If but one should oppose them, he may rout them all merely by a menacing shout. உரப்பிப்பார்க்க, inf. To use menace, boisterousness, &c., in order to try the courage of any one to beat him down, &c. உரப்பியடிக்க, inf. To attempt, overcome by boisterous talk, overcome in whole, or in part. உரப்பு, v. noun. Bluster, shout, vociferation, whoop, call, அதட்டுகை.

[prov.] To pound and harden the earth around trees newly set, பலமுறச்செய்ய. உரங்கொள்ள, inf. To thrive, grow strong--as the wind; to get strength, become boisterous--as the sea, பலங்கொள்ள. 2. To exert strength, &c., வலியுண்டாக. 3. To be hardened, indurated, obdurate, கடினமுற. உரங்கொண்டெறிந்து. Throwing with force. காய்ச்சலுரங்கொண்டுகாய்கின்றது. The fever rages and burns. உரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To exert influence, take effect, produce, effect--as arguments, பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To grow strong, வலியுற. 3. To thrive--as vegetables, &c., பலப்பட. அவரெடுத்தகாரியங்களிலொன்றுமுரஞ்செய்யவில் லை. To fasten, make firm, உரப்பிக்க. உரம்விழ, inf. To get a particular ailment by rolling on the ground--applied only to a child not twelve months old. உராதரம், s. A woman's breast, முலை. உரேந்திரன், s. A hot sun. உரப்பிக்க, inf. To make firm, to harden, indurate, confirm. உரப்பு, v. noun. intenseness, force, strength, firmness, compactness, வலி. 2. Coarseness, thickness, roughness--as of cloth, paper, leaves, &c.; stiffness, hardness--as of rice not well boiled, or of the stomach when overcharged, or when food does not digest, திண்மை. உரப்பானநிலம், s. Firm, hard (ungenial) land--as உரத்தநிலம். உரப்பானபுடைவை, s. Thick, coarse cloth. நெஞ்சுரப்பானவன், s. A hardhearted man. 2)

ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To give advice, persuade clandestinely, to teach one to act with duplicity, புத்திசொல்ல. 6. To utter incantations, to consecrate, மந்திரமுரைக்க. ஓதாதார்க்கில்லையுணர்வுடனொழுக்கம். Knowledge and good manners are not to be found in unlearned men. ஓதாமலொருநாளுமிருக்கவேண்டாம். Employ your whole time in the pursuit of knowledge. ஓதுவதொழியேல். Cease not to learn. (ஔ வை.) எண்ணெயோதிக்கொடுக்கிறது. To administer holy oil to women in labor. காதிலேயோதிவிட்டான். A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. To teach science, instruct, படிப்பிக்க. ஓதல், v. noun. Reciting the vedas, &c. 2. Reading. 3. Learning, speaking. ஓதலினன்றேவேதியர்க்கொழுக்கம். Good manners in a brahman are preferable to the recitation of the vedas. ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்ந்தோர்மூவர்க்கும்.
