iẕ (p. 55) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To lose, forfeit, to be bereaved of, to suffer loss, இழந்துபோக. இழப்பு, v. noun. Loss, privation, forfeiture, இழந்துவிடுகை. இழப்புணி, s. One who has lost a child, a husband, property, &c. இழவு, v. noun. Loss, deprivation, forfeiture, bereavement, நஷ்டம். 2. Death, மரணம். அந்தவீட்டிலேயிழவுபட்டபாடாயிருக்கிறது...... There is affliction in that house, as if a death had occurred there. இழவுகாத்தல், v. noun. [vul.] Keeping close to the house--as mourners till after the eighth day of the funeral ceremony. இழவுகாரன்--இழவுக்குரியவன், s. The chief mourner at the funeral. இழவுகொடுக்க--இழவுக்கடிக்க, inf. To mourn at a funeral, to condole with, to bewail the dead--as women do, beating their breasts, &c. அப்படிச்செய்துபோட்டு அவனோடே இழவு கொடுக்கிறதார்? Who will expose himself to be troubled by him, for doing so? இழவுகொண்டாடுதல், v. noun. Mourning for the dead, accompained by external gestures, lamentations, beating the breast, &c., either at the funeral, or at stated periods afterwards. இழவுக்குப்போக, inf. To go to condole with. இழவுசொல்ல, inf. To invite to, or notify concerning a funeral. இழவுவிழுதல், v. noun. Dying-a word used in imprecations, &c. அவனுக்கிழவுவிழ. May death fall upon him. இழவுவினவ, inf. To condole with mourners, inquiring after the dead, embracing, &c. இழவுவீடு, s. A house where a death has taken place. இழவோலை, s. A funeral notice or invitation, a funeral letter or ola, சாவோலை. 33)

oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. See தளை. ஒன்றார்--ஒன்னாதார்--ஒன்னார், s. Foes, unfriendly persons. (p.) ஒன்றுகுடி, s. A family or person living in another's house, garden, &c. See ஒட்டுக்குடி and ஒதுக்குக்குடி. ஒன்றுகூட்டு, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

kvr (p. 98) --கவரு, கிறேன், கவர்ந்தேன், வேன், கவர, v. a. To seize, grasp, catch, capture, bereave, take by force or stealth, பறிக்க. 2. The ravish, charm, captivate, attract, arrest, கிரகித்துக்கொள்ள. 3. To rob, steal, plunder, pillage, கொள்்ளையிட. 4. To embezzle, appropriate by force or stealth, திருட. 5. tāy (p. 234) s. Mother, அன்னை. 2. Dam, female parent of animals in general, விலங்கின் தாய். 3. [in combination.] A maternal aunt, &c. (See சிறியதாய், சிறியதாய்முறை and பெரியதாய்.) 4. Origin, that which is primitive, chief, or principal, முதன்மை. (c.) தாய், is also applied to five kinds of nurses. 1. பாராட்டுத்தாய். 2. ஊட்டுந்தாய். 3. முலைத்தாய். 4. கைத்தாய். 5. செவிலித்தாய். which see. Another five-fold classification is given of persons held in similar esteem with mothers. 1. அரசன்தேவி, king's wife. 2. குருவின்தேவி, wife of the guru. 3. அண் ணன்தேவி, elder brother's wife. 4. தன்தே வியைஈன்றவள், wife's mother. 5. தன்னைஈன் றவள், one's own mother. தாய்ப்பொன்னிலும்மாப்பொன்எடுக்கிறவன். He who would steal one-twentieth even of his mother's gold--a maxim on the thievishness of goldsmiths. தாய்முகங்காணாதபிள்ளை. A child early bereaved of its mother. தாய்முலைப்பாலிலும்உப்புப்பார்க்கிறவன். One who tries even his mother's milk to see if it is not salt; i. e. a distrustful, mistrustful, sceptical person. தாய்சொற்சிறந்தவாசகமில்லை. No word is like that of a mother. (Avv.) தாயினும்அன்பர்கர்த்தர். The Divine Being more loving than a mother. (Christ. usage.) தாய்க்குள்ளதுமகளுக்கு. As the mother, so the daughter. தாயாடு, s. A dam. தாயேடு--தாயோலை, s. [prov.] The original book, முதலேடு. தாயைக்கொல்லி, appel. n. A matricide. 2. A villain, a wretch, மாபாவி. 3. A plantain, or other tree that perishes after yielding, வாழைநண்டுசிப்பிவேய்முதலியன. தாய்கால்--தாய்க்கால்வழி, s. Maternal relatives--as தாய்வழி. தாய்க்கம்பு, s. Great grief, envy, jealously, rage, fury, &c. நெருப்புநின்றகாட்டிலேதாவதிருந்தாலும்நீர்நின்றகா ட்டிலொன்றுமிராது. Though something may survive a forest conflagration, nothing will remain after a forest inundation; i. e. water is more destructive than fire. நெருப்பெழக்காய்ச்சினான். He heated it hot. பெருநெருப்புக்கீரமில்லை. A great fire is not put out by a little moisture. அவன்நெருப்பு. He is fiery man. வயிற்றிலேநெருப்பாயெரிகிறது. It burns as fire in my belly (heart); spoken of a bereavement, &c. 2. My hunger is very severe. 3. I have a burning sensation internally. காய்ச்சல்நெருப்பாயெரிக்கிறது. The fever rages like fire. நெருப்பணைத்துவைக்க, inf. To keep the fire from going out. 2. To put out the fire. நெருப்பணைந்துபோக, inf. To be quenched, extinguished as fire. நெருப்பன், s. [prov. fem. நெருப்பி.] An angry, malicious, dangerous man, an incendiary, கோபி. நெருப்பாறு, s. A river of fire, said to be in the north beyond Oude. 2. Lava from a volcano. நெருப்பிட, inf. To set on fire. நெருப்பின்சிகை, s. Flame of fire. நெருப்புக்கட்டை, s. A large fire-brand, a log of fire. நெருப்புக்கண், s. Envious eye. 2. The evil eye. 3. A fiery, malicious, furious eye. 4. See under சாணை. நெருப்புத்தணல், s. Live coals. நெருப்புத்தண்ணீர்--நெருப்புத்திராவ கம், s. [com. அக்கினித்திராவகம், which see.] Aqua fortis, or nitric acid. நெருப்புத்தூண், s. A column of fire. நெருப்புப்படுதல், v. noun. Being consumed with drought, கடுங்கோடையாதல். 2. (fig.) Suffering oppression, injury, &c., as a village, or country, from a ruler of head man, அமளியாதல். 3. Being destroyed by divine retribution, as the possessions of a wicked man, தேவதண்டனைஅடைதல். 4. Being destroyed, அழிவடைதல், the language of imprecation. நெருப்புப்பற்ற--நெருப்புப்பிடிக்க, To catch fire, ignite. 2. As தீப்பற்ற. நெருப்புப்பற்றவைக்க--நெருப்புமூட்ட --நெருப்புவளர்க்க, inf. Acting unjustly, as a government, a head-man, &c., often used as a curse. நெருப்புமூள, inf. To be kindled as fire, to rage as fire. நெருப்புவிழுங்குகோழி--நெருப்புக்கோ ழி. s. An ostrich. See தீக்குருவி. 2. (Beschi.) A turkey-cock, from its red throat, வான்கோழிச்சேவல். நெருப்புவிழுதல், v. noun. Being destroyed by unjust means, or by drought and famine. 2. To take by force, to usurp, to grasp, to extort, to rob, to plunder, to confiscate, வலிதிற்கவர. 5. To dig out, to excavate, தோண்ட. 6. To unload, unlade, discharge, இறக்க.--Note The most common compounds are, அஸ்தி வாரம்பறிக்க, to dig for a foundation; களைபறிக்க, to weed; தேங்காய்பறிக்க, to pluck cocoa-nuts; தட்டிப்பறிக்க, to get by stratagem; பூப்பறிக்க, மலர்பறிக்க, to crop flowers; பணம்பறிக்க, to juggle away money; மண்பறிக்க, to dig out earth; வெட்டிப்பறிக்க, to root up a tree, or undermine a wall. பறித்தகாட்டுக்குப்பயமில்லை. There is nothing to fear in a jungle, where a robbery has just been committed பறிமுதல், s. Confiscated property. 2. Things plundered from a single person. பறி, v. noun. One of the two classes of Jainas, so called because they pluck all the hair from their heads to avoid vermin and so to prevent taking away life. செடிகொள்பறிதலையமணர்.
