aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. Ramming; thrusting, stabbing, &c. குத்தார்க்கு, s. [local.] Withe, cord, &c., inserted in the hole of a குத்தூசி needle. குத்து, v. noun. Pounding in a mortar, உரலிற்குத்துகை. 2. A blow with the fist, a cuff, a buffet, a box, கைக்குத்து. 3. A thrust, a stab; a puncture, a prick, an incision, a goading, ஈட்டிமுதலியவற்றாற்கு த்துகை. 4. May you be stabbed--an imprecation. ஒருகுத்துச்சோறு. A double handful of boiled rice, with the hands thrust in perpendicularly. குத்துமி, s. Husk--as separated from rice by pounding. குத்துவெட்டு, s. Stabbing and maiming. --either in scuffles, robbery or war. 2. Dots and strokes--as erasures, பிழைபட் டதைக்கிறுக்கித்தள்ளல். குத்துப்பாடு, v. noun. Censuring or charging one with a fault; violent contention; lit. piercing, retortion. அந்தவேலைமேற்குத்துப்பாடுசொல்லுகிறான். He finds fault with the work. குத்துக்காயம், s. To stand on points, each urging his own reasons; to contend, to oppose-as rivals. 2. To haggle in dealing. குத்துகால்-குத்துக்கால், s. The uprights of a frame-as of a car; a piece of furniture, support, தாங்குகால். குத்துக்காலிட, inf. To sit or lie with bent legs; [ex குந்து.] குத்துக்கால்நாட்ட, inf. Stack of ricesheaves, or other grain-ricks, நென்முதலி யவற்றின்போர். 5. A sheaf of corn given to the washerman, barber, carpenter, &c., அரிக்கட்டு; [ex சூடு, v.] (c.) நீர்சூடாயிருக்கிறது. [prov.] The sheaf given to the reapers. நகச்சூடு, s. The degree of heat in warm water, commonly ascertained by putting one's finger into it. சூட்டுக்கோல், s. A branding, cauterizing iron. See சூலக்குறடு. சூட்டுவலி, s. The pains of a pregnant woman before delivery. (c.) சூடுசுள்ளாப்பிக்க, inf. [prov.] To loosen, shake, and scatter in the threshing floor the sheaves of a stack, preparatory for treading out the corn. சூடுஉதற, inf. To separate to corn from the threshed straw. 2. cūṭcam (p. 199) s. [prop. சூக்ஷமம்.] Skill, address, dexterity, ingenuity, inventiveness, tact, யூகம். 2. Curiously, as displayed in a piece of workmanship, நூதனம். 3. Device, contrivance, expedient, உபாயம். 4. [a contraction of சூட்சுமம்.] Minuteness, subtility, fineness, நுட்பம். 5. Comprehensiveness, conciseness, சுருக்கம். 6. Artful scheming, dishonest cunning, தந்திரம். (c.) 7. A clue to a subject; a rule in science, சூத்திரம். சூட்சத்திலேமோட்சமா. Is it easy to gain heaven? சுண்ணாம்பிலேயிருக்கிறதுசூட்சம். The principal virtue is in the chunam; (to make the mouth red in chewing betel.) சூட்சத்தில்முடித்துக்கொண்டுவாரும். Have the business done with little cost. சூட்சக்காரன், s. A skilful, ingenious person. 2. A cunning, artful person. சூட்சபுத்தி, s. Great ingenuity, superior invention, genius. சூட்சமாகப்பண்ண, inf. To act, skilfully, display ingenuity, perform extraordinary deeds, to subtilize. 2. To practise stratagems, உபாயம்பண்ண. சூட்சமானவேலை, s. Nice, ingenious, skilful workmanship. சூட்சம்பண்ண, inf. To manage economically. நீசெவலைச்சூட்சம்பண்ணவேண்டும். You must curtail your expenses. சூட்சவழி, s. A short, skilful method in art or science. 2. A good, moral system, நன்னெறி. 3. A short road, சுருக் கவழி. See சுளுவானவழி. சூட்சக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. சூட்சத்தைத்தட்ட--சூட்சந்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap to the working machine. சூட்சமறிய, inf. To get a clue to a subject, &c. சூட்சமானசெலவு, s. Economical expense. (c.) சூட்சம்போட, inf. To make a contrivance for the equilibrium of a kite in the air. சூட்சம்வைக்க, inf. [prov.] A chunam-circle drawn, or a string tied, round the limb above a poisonous bite, commonly with incantations, to stop the spread of the poison; or in diseased cattle, to draw the disease to the enchanted part, விஷத்தடை. தவண்மந்திரம், s. The stage when a medicinal oil is to be taken from the fire. 2. (fig.) Such a delicate state of the system as renders a person liable to disease from the least exposure. 3. (fig.) Excessive irritability of temper, extreme of sensibility.--Note. There are five degrees of inspissation: 1. குழம்புப்பதம், a thickened state; 2. கடுகுப்பதம், partial fluidity; 3. மந்தபதம், oily consistency; 4. மெழுகுபதம், waxy state; 5. முறுகுபதம், dryness. There are two states of heat in preparing oils, metals, &.c.: காயும்பதம், slight heat, for boiling the juices of plants; 2. வேல்பதம், full heat for melting gold, silver and other metals. பதக்கேடு, v. noun. Past the right stage, over-ripe, over-boiled, decayed, rotten. பதக்கேடானசரீரம். Debility of the system, often through age. பதத்துக்குக்காய்ச்ச--பதமாகக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To heat or boil medical oil, food, &c., to the proper degree. பதத்துக்குவடிக்க--பதத்தில்வடிக்க, inf. To strain a medical oil, &c., at the right stage of boiling. பதநீர், s. [com. பதனி.] Sweet toddy drawn in a pot lined with chunam To prevent fermentation. பதந்தப்ப, inf. To miss or pass the proper stage of boiling rice or medical oil, or in the ripening of fruits. 2. To pass the proper time for doing a thing. எகுபதந்தப்பிப்போயிற்று. The steel is not well tempered. பதபாகம், s. Gentleness, mildness, &c. பதப்பட, inf. [v. noun. பதப்பாடு.] To be seasoned, tempered, fitted, adapted, trained, பக்குவமாக. 2. To grow ripe, பழுக்க. பல்லுக்குப்பதப்பட்டது. It is adapted to the teeth--as well boiled for an old man, &c. பதப்படுத்த, inf. To season, temper, tan, mould, adapt, train. பதமழிவு, v. noun. Over-ripeness. See பதனழிவு. பதமறிய, inf. To know the right stage, temperature or consistency. பதமாயிருக்க, inf. To strain the water from boiled rice that it may be properly dry. பதமெடுக்க--பதம்பிடிக்க, inf.
