iṟuku (p. 57) கிறது, இறுகினது, ம், இறுக, v. n. To become tight--as a bandage, knot, &c., to be strained, be close, hard, compact, &c.--as land dried by the sun, அழுந்த. 2. To grow thick in consistency, to coagulate, to be inspissated, be clotted, உறைய. 3. To congeal, become hard--as wax, metals, &c., to become dry--as mortar, clay, &c., கட்டியாக. 4. To become firm--as a loose tooth, பெலக்க. 5. To be close, rich, luxuriant--as growing corn, fruitful trees, &c., செறிய. எண்மண்டையிறுகிப்போயிற்று. My head feels day (needing oil and bathing). சளியிறுகிற்று. The phlegm (in the throat) is become hard. இறுகக்கட்ட, inf. To brace or fasten tight, close, compact, &c., அழுந் தக்கட்ட. இறுகத்தழுவ, inf. To hug, embrace closely, இறுகவணைக்க. இறுகப்பிசைய, inf. To knead hard, make close by kneading, அழுந்தப்பி சைய. இறுகப்பிடிக்க, inf. To hold fast, grasp tight, அழுந்தப்பிடிக்க. 2. To be stingy, parsimonious, tenacious, செலவு செய்யாதிருக்க. இறுகவிறுக, [adverbially.] Very tight, drawn tighter and tighter, அழுந்த வழுந்த. இறுகினகை, s. Close-fistedness, parsimony, ஈயாதகை. இறுகினதேகம், s. A firm, compact body. இறுகினமனம், s. An unrelenting heart, a close or parsimonious mind. இறுக்கம், v. noun. Tightness, closeness, compactness, hardness, tenacity, அழுத்தம். 2. Closeness of weather, sultriness, ஒடுக்கம். 3. Parsimoniousness, niggardliness, tenaciousness, கையழுத்தம். 4. Strictness, rigidness, pressure, நெருக்கம். இறுக்கமானகாலம், s. Sultry weather. 2. Hard times. 23)

eḷ (p. 75) s. [vul. எள்ளு.] One of the nine kinds of grain, sesamum, from the seeds of which an oil is extracted, used for food, bathing, &c., திலம். Sesamum orientale. See தானியம் and எண்ணெய்.-Note. The ள் of this word becomes ட் and ண் by permutation. எள்ளத்தனையைமலையத்தனையாக்க. To make a mountain of a sesamum seed, to exaggerate. எள்ளளவு--எள்ளுப்போலே. As much as a sesamum seed, a very little. எள்ளளவுநம்பிக்கையுமில்லை. Utterly unworthy of confidence. 2. Destitute of belief, confidence, &c. எள்ளுக்குளெண்ணெய்போலெங்குநிறைந்தகடவுள். God who pervades the universe, as oil the sesamum seed. எட்கடை--எட்கிடை--எட்பிரமா ணம். As much as a sesamum seed, எள்ள ளவு. 2. A standard of measure in regard to space, ஓரளவு--eight எள் make a நெல் or grain or rice; eight grains of rice one அங்குலம், an inch, &c. எட்பாகு, s. A kind of porridge made of sesamum seed, எள்ளுப்பாகு. எண்ணெய், s. [impr. எண்ணை.] Rape-seed oil. 2. (fig.) A common name for oils of all kinds. எண்ணெயூற்ற, inf. To express oil, எண்ணெய்வடிக்க. எண்ணெயெரிக்க, inf. To prepare medicinal oils by burning, in which the drugs are rolled up in a bit of cloth which is dipped in oil and set on fire; the oil which drops from it is used as a medicine, தைலமெரிக்க. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பு, s. The color of rape-seed oil, or dark brown. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பி, s. A female whose skin resembles rape-seed oil, not so much in regard to its color as its soft and beautiful appearance. எண்ணெய்க்காப்பு, s. Oil for bathing an idol, எண்ணெயபிஷேகம். எண்ணெய்க்காரன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. A hone prepared for use by oiling. எண்ணெய்ச்சாயம், s. Oil paint, எண்ணெயாற்செய்யப்பட்டசாயம். 2. Dyeing a cloth red after soaking it in margosa oil, எண்ணெயிற்றோய்த்தேற்றப்பட்டசாயம். எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு, s. Indigestion produced by eating oily food, எண்ணெய் வயிற்றிற்றங்குகை. 2. A clotted state of the hair from the oil not being well washed out, எண்ணெய்மயிரில்விடாமை. 3. A bad smell--as of oil, எண்ணெய்நாற்றம். எண்ணெய்ச்சீலை, s. Cloth dipped in oil to be applied to wounds, எண் ணெய்த்துணி. 2. A piece of cloth put round the waist before bathing, எண் ணெய்க்கோவணம். எண்ணெய்தேய்க்க, inf. To rub oil. எண்ணெய்தொட்டுப்பொட்டுவைக் க. inf. To dip the finger in oil before bathing dropping seven drops on the floor for the சிரஞ்சிவியர், who are supposed in consequence to grant long life. எண்ணெய்பிறக்க, inf. To form as oil by boiling. எண்ணெய்பூச, inf. To oil, anoint, besmear with oil. எண்ணெய்பொருத்த, inf. To put medical oil on the head or other parts of the body, and to rub it in, மருந்தெண் ணெய்பூச. எண்ணெய்ப்பற்று, s. Adherence of oil or unctuous matter to the bowels, hair, clothes, &c., oil, greasy substance in food--as in fish or on the dress from cooking, எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. எண்ணெய்வழுக்கு, v. noun. Being greasy--as oil, &c., எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. 2. Shining, sleek, glossy, bright, எண்ணெய் மினுக்கு. எண்ணெய்வாணிகன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். ஆமணக்கெண்ணெய், s. Castor oil. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil for the head. விளக்கெண்ணெய், s. Lamp oil. புன்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from புன்கம் seeds. சூட்டெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from the residuum of the margosa berry. மருத்தெண்ணெய், s. Medical oil. குருந்தெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from குருந்தம் seeds. இலுப்பெண்ணெய், s. The இலுப் பை oil. வேப்பெண்ணெய், s. Margosa oil. தேங்காயெண்ணெய், s. Cocoanut oil. வடியெண்ணெய், s. Clarified medical oil. கொதியெண்ணெய், s. A species of boiled oil, used for medicinal purposes. புளியெண்ணெய், s. A medical oil. புன்னையெண்ணெய், s. The oil extracted from புன்னை seeds. நல்லெண்ணெய், s. Sesamum oil used for the hair and the skin, &c. மரவெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from wood. தெளிவெண்ணெய், s. Clear margosa oil poured off from the sediment. ஊற்றெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted by pressing or pounding the seeds. மீனெண்ணெய், s. Fish oil. எள்ளுண்டை--எள்ளுருண்டை, s. A pastry made into balls, said to be a very strengthening food, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. எள்ளுந்தண்ணீருமிறைக்க, inf. To pour water to the manes of deceased persons on sesamum seeds and sacrificial grass held in the hand. எள்ளோரை, s. Sesamum and rice boiled and mixed with ghee--one of the சித்திரான்னம். காட்டெள்ளு, s. A kind of sesamum found in uncultivated places. காரெள்ளு, s. The common எள். 2. A distinct species of எள். பேரெள்ளு, s. A large kind of sesamum. கடலெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum. வெள்ளெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum bearing white seed. சிற்றெள்ளு, s. kṭṭu (p. 88) கிறேன், கட்டினேன், வேன், கட்ட, v. a. To tie, bind, gird, confine, link, chain, hamper, trammel, shackle, pinion, fasten, brace, pack, put on clothes, to wear, பிணிக்க. 2. To build, construct, frame, erect, fix, arrange, வீடுமுதலியகட்ட. 3. To hug, embrace, தழுவ. 4. To marry, விவாகஞ் செய்ய. 5. To bind by spells, magic, &c., to conjure, தடைகட்ட. 6. To fabricate, contrive, invent, கதைகட்ட. 7. To harden, condense, consolidate mercury, vermilion, &c., by the admixture of certain ingredients, சரக்குக்கட்ட. 8. To subordinate, subdue, subject, அடக்க. 9. To suborn, to bribe, பரிதானத்தாற்கட்ட. 1. v. n. [with the impersonal terminations.] To harden, consolidate, form as concretions, to concrete, clot, congeal, இறுக. 11. To become bound or confined, constricted--as the throat; to overspread as clouds, to collect, மூட. 12. To form as a boil, tumor, &c., to imposthumate, to gather, கட்டிதிரள. அடிபட்டஇடத்திலேயிரத்தங்கட்டியிருக்கிறது.... The blood is clotted in the part which is bruised. இப்படியிட்டேற்றம்பேசினாலுனக்குத்தொண்டையி லேகட்டும். If you persist in thus traducing me, you will have a boil in your throat; i. e. you will be seriously distressed--a curse. கட்டாக்காலி, s. An ox or cow suffered to run wild, or not folded by night. கட்டாணி, s. a fastening for a female ear-ring, கடைப்பூட்டாணி. கட்டிக்காக்க, inf. To preserve, guard, to protect. கட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a daughter in marriage. 2. To make, build, construct, &c., and give one. கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To take in marriage. 2. To hug, to embrace. 3. To contract, to lay up, to accumulate as moral deeds, virtue or vice, for future retribution. 4. To secure as an object, to turn a thing or person to one's own account, to conciliate favor, to bring within one's own power or influence. 5. To suborn, to bribe. 6. To make up a difference, a quarrel, &c., to become reconciled, to settle amicably, to compromise. தேசத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To conquer a country. புண்ணியத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To do a good action. பாவத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To contract guilt, to commit a sin. மாங்காய்ப்புளிதொண்டையைக்கட்டிக்கொண்ட து. The acid of the mango has caused a constriction in my throat. என்னபலனைக்கட்டிக்கொண்டாய். What hast thou obtained? கட்டிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To throw the arms round a person, to hug, to embrace, to grasp, to seize. கட்டிப்புகுந்தவள், s. A widow that has married again. கட்டியடிக்க, inf. To tie and flog, whip, &c., கட்டுகரை, s. A mole, a pier to defend shipping in a harbor. கட்டுசரக்கு, s. Mercury, &c., consolidated. கட்டுத்தாலிகட்ட, inf. To marry a widow. 2. To take a woman to wife-this may be done, if the man has no child by his first wife, with her consent, who acknowledges its validity by tying the marriage symbol round the neck of the new bride. தன்னைக்கட்ட, inf. To protect one's self by the use of magical incantations. 2. To have sufficient for one's support. 3. To be economical, frugal, to live within one's income. கவிகட்ட, inf. To compose a verse. கட்டு, v. noun. Binding, bonds, linking, connecting, கட்டுகை. 2. Hardening, consolidating, &c. இலிங்கக்கட்டு, s. Consolidated vermilion. தாளக்கட்டு--அரிதாரக்கட்டு, s. caṭai (p. 157) s. Entangled locks of hair-as once worn by Siva as an ascetic, and now by his devotees in imitation of him; also plaited hair, மயிர்ப்பின்னல். 2. Bushy, shaggy, thick hair, bushiness, சடைத்தது. 3. A kind of cork tree--as சடைச்சி, ஓர்மரம். 4. Root, a fibrous root, வேர். W. p. 338. JAT'A.--Note. The word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation சடா, in many of its compounds. 5. [prov.] The flat head of a nail, ஆணியின்சடை. 6. The stopple of a a bottle, அடைப்பு. (Rare.) சடாடவி, s. A cluster of dishevelled locks. (p.) சடாதரன், s. Siva, as wearing entangled locks, சிவன். சடாதரி, s. A female devotee with matted locks, சடைதரித்தாள். 2. Parvati, as wearing entangled locks, பார்வதி. 3. One with entangled locks of hair, commonly tied up as a crest, சடையையுடைய வன். சடாதாரி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி. 2. Siva, சிவன். சடாபாரம், s. The heavy tangled locks of Siva, or of his devotees. (c.) சடாமகுடம்--சடாமுடி, s. The entangled hair of Siva formed into a crown. (c.) சடாமகுடன், s. Siva, whose entangled lock of hair forms his crown, சிவன். சடாமுனி, s. [in metempsychosis.] The soul of a Brahman in a Muni wearing clotted hair. See பிரமராட்சதை. (c.) சடைக்கஞ்சா, s. An aquatic plant, பாசி. Ceratophyllum demersum, (L.) (சது.) 3. A plant, கீரிப்பூண்டு. 4. A mineral, பொ ன்னிமிளை, Bismuth pyrites. சடைச்சிவேர், s. A plant, Achyranthes corymbosa, (L.) சடைத்தேங்காய், s. [prov.] A cocoanut whose husk abounds with fibres. சடைநாகம், s. A kind of ornament worn by women on the hair, ஓரணிகலம். சடைநாய், s. A shaggy dog. (c.) சடைபற்றிப்போக, inf. To grow bushy, shaggy, rough, as hair. 2. To become thick, as branches. சடைபில்லை--சடப்பில்லை, s. A kind or round golden ornament for the head of women. Madras usage. In other places,லாக்கடி. சடைபின்ன, inf. To plait the hair. சடைப்பயிறு, s. A kind of grain. சடைப்பாசி, s. A kind of moss--as சடைச்சி, 2. சடைப்புல், s. A kind of grass. See புல். சடைப்பூச்சி, s. [loc.] A species of bushy caterpillar. (R.) சடைமுடி, s. The சரக்கொன்றை tree. சடைமுடியோர், s. Ascetics who wear entangled hair in imitation of Siva, தாபதர். சடையன், s. (fem. சடைச்சி.) One who wears an entangled plait of hair. சடையாணி, s. A flat-headed nail. (c.) சடையாண்டி, s. A religious mendicant with matted hair. சடையோன், s. tampirāṉ (p. 224) s. God the Supreme Being. (See எம்பிரான், and உம்பிரான்.) 2. A title of royalty in Travancore, பொன்னந்தம்பிரான். 3. A kind of monk, devoted to celibacy, in token of which he wears red garments and clotted hair; is generally learned and qualified to perform the Siva-pujah. There are several colleges of the order in different places, துறவி. 4. [prov.] An overseer of the monks, as கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான். which see; [ex தம்.] (c.) தலைதப்பினதுதம்பிரான்புண்ணியம்.
