atītam (p. 11) s. Exaltedness, pre-eminence, that which excels or goes beyond, எட்டாதது. 2. That which is beyond reach, exceeding the power of human comprehension, கடந்தது. 3. An attribute of the Deity, கடவுளதோர்தன்மை. (p.) மனோவாக்குக்கதீதமாக. In an incomprehensible and ineflable manner. அதீதப்பிரமம், s. The Deity as beyond human comprehension. அதீதர், s. The celestials, வானோர். 2. Ascetics, wise men who by their austerities have obtained great eminence, முனிவர். அதீதாவஸ்தை, s. aṟivu (p. 33) s. Knowledge, wisdom, learning, science, erudition, one of the four ஆடூஉக்குணம், ஞானம். 2. Intelligence, intellect, reason, புத்தி. 3. Feeling, perception, comprehension, உணர்வு. 4. The senses as the medium of knowledge or knowledge acquired by them, பொறியுணர்வு. 5. Instruction, advice, போதனை. (c.) அறிவழி, s. Toddy or other inebriating liquor, கள். 2. A devil, பிசா சம்; [ex அழி, to ruin.] (p.) அறிவழிய, inf. To lose one's reason, be bereft or sense, be under a delusion, be infatuated. அறிவறை, s. One destitute of spiritual knowledge. 2. Destitution of spiritual knowledge, delusion, infatuation, illusion; [ex அறை, bereft.] (p.). அறிவறைபோயினர். They became bewildered. அறிவன், s. A wise man, a skilful or learned person, அறிவுடையோன். 2. An artificer, கம்மாளன். 3. The planet Mercury, புதன். 4. The twenty-sixth lunar mansion, உத்திரட்டாதிநாள். 5. The planet Mars, செவ்வாய். 6. God, கடவுள். 7. Argha, அருகன். 8. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 9. Siva, சிவன். (p.) அறிவனாள், s. The twenty-sixth lunar mansion. அறிவாகரன், s. A person of profound erudition; [ex ஆகரம், seat.] (p.) அறிவாளன்--அறிவாளி, s. A wise, skilful or intelligent person. அறிவிலான்--அறிவிலி--அறிவில் லான்--அறிவீனன், s. An ignorant person, one without spiritual knowledge. அறிவில்லாமை--அறிவின்மை--அ றிவீனம், neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறிவுகொடுக்க--அறிவுகொளுத்த, inf. To impart instruction, teach, instruct. 2. To allow a lucid interval, as to a dying person after a season of stupor, delirium, &c. அறிவுகொடுத்துக் கொல்லும். (Death, disease, &c.) will allow a lucid interval and then kill (him.) அறிவுசொல்ல, inf. To communicate instruction, give good advice, exhort. அறிவுடைமை, v. noun. Knowledge, the possession of knowledge. அறிவுணர்த்த--அறிவுபயிற்ற--அறி வுறுத்த, inf. To instruct, communicate instruction. அறிவுதிக்க, inf. To dawn as wisdom. அறிவுபிறக்க, inf. To dawn as knowledge in the mind, to become instructed, enlightened, informed. 2. To be restored as the senses, consciousness, &c. அறிவுப்பயிற்சி, s. Education. அறிவுமயக்கம், s. Loss of consciousness. அறிவுமயங்க, inf. To faint, lose consciousness either by swooning, fits, sleep, or the approach of death, &c. 2. To be surprised. அறிவுள்ளவன், s. A wise or skilful person. 2. A grateful person. அறிவொப்புக்காண்டல், v. noun. Questioning to ascertain if another's views correspond with one's own. (p.). நுண்ணறிவு, s. Minute or exact knowledge. பேரறிவு, s. Perfect knowledge. சிற்றறிவு, s. Imperfect knowledge. 53)

aḷvu (p. 33) s. Measure, degree, proportion, quantity, magnitude, size, capacity, bound, limit, compass, number, standard, வரையறை. 2. The proper or required measure, the complement number, size, weight, &c., மட்டு. 3. With உம், it expresses a limited extent of measure, time, distance, &c., as அவ்வளவும், only so far, even so much. 4. Suffixed to participles, it means when, as soon as--as பார்க்குமளவில், as soon as seen. 5. A measure or thing to measure with, அளவுகருவி. There are four kinds of measurement; viz.: 1. எண்ணல், computation. 2. எடுத் தல், weight, measurement by balance. 3. முகத்தல், measurement of capacity--as dry of fluid measure. 4. நீட்டல், measurement of extension, a long measure and land measure.--Some add a fifth தெறித்தல், jerking with finger. இராசா அளவிற்கேறிற்று. It has gone up to (the limit of) the king; i. e. it is too late now to adopt measures to prevent it. காரியத்தளவிலேயொன்றுமில்லை. There is no importance in the thing--it matters not. குலத்தளவேயாகுங்குணம். According to the caste will be the disposition. அவன்வருமளவும். Till he comes. மேகமண்டலமளவும். As high as, or as far as the region of the clouds. என்னளவிலேயிப்படிநடந்தது. It has so happened to me; at least in my case, &c. தன்னளவிலே கொண்டாடிக்கொண்டான். He limited the feast to his own circle. அளவடி, s. A line containing four metrical feet, நாற்சீரால்வருமடி. அளவடிவிருத்தம், s. A விருத்தம் verse of four lines, each of which contains four feet, நேரடிவிருத்தம். அளவழித்தாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அளவறுக்க, inf. To find out, ascertain a number and decide, வரையறுக்க. அளவற்றது--அளவில்லாதது. appel. n. That which is beyond number, measure, weight, &c. அளவாக, inf. [used adverbially.] Moderately, to a limited extent, according to. அளவிட, inf. To estimate, calculate. 2. To guess, conjecture. 3. To measure, explore, fathom. 4. To investigate, examine, search into. அவனை அளவிடக்கூடாது. One cannot fathom him. அளவிடப்படாத, neg. rel. part. Incomprehensible. அளவிடை, v. noun. Measuring, admeasurement, அளவிடுகை. 2. Estimation, calculation, guess, மதிப்பிடுகை. 3. s. Weight, நிறை. 4. Capacity, extent of one's power. நிருவாகம். சத்துருவையளவிடைபார். Estimate an enemy's power. அளவியற்றாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem. அளவிறக்க, inf. To exceed the measure, the appointed limit, &c., எல் லைகடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate a rule, மீற. 3. To exceed all bounds, be immeasurable, inconceivable, எண்ணிறக்க. அளவிறந்தபொருள், s. Immense property beyond the power of calculation, a thing incomprehensible, a mystery. அளவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Immeasurableness, countlessness, immensity. அளவுகோல், s. A land measurer's rod. அளவுநாழி, s. A stamped measure. அளவுபடுத்த, inf. To measure, ascertain, to limit. அளவெடுக்க, inf. To take a measure, dimensions, &c., of a thing. அவ்வளவு--இவ்வளவு, s. So much, so many. அவ்வளவும், Even so much, only of far, that is all. எவ்வளவு, s. How much, how many. நேற்றளவு. Up to or till yesterday, in the course of yesterday. நேற்றையளவிலேசெய்தியிப்படி. The news were so up to yesterday. இன்றளவும். Until this day, in the course of to-day. 14)

aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

āẕm (p. 43) s. Depth, profundity, great depth, abyss, குட்டம். 2. Mature thought, learning, discrimination, comprehensiveness of mind, ஆழ்ந்தகருத்து. That which cannot be easily understood, அறிதற்கரியது. (c.) ஆழஞ்சோதிக்க, inf. To prove, examine, examine one`s depth of knowledge, &c. ஆழமானகருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, profundity of meaning, deep or profound wisdom, sense. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், Comprehensiveness of language--being one of the ten beauties of composition, நூலழகுபத்தி னொன்று. ஆழம்பார்க்க, inf. To sound the depth of any place. 2. To sound or sift one. ஆழியன், s. An impostor, deceiver, one who conceals his opinion. 46)

ilēcu (p. 55) s. Smallness, minuteness, நொய்மை. 2. Lightness in weight or moral character, buoyancy, கனமின்மை. 3. Easiness of attainment, that which is not difficult, எளிது. 4. Weakness, feebleness, பல வீனம்--as இலேசானபொறுப்பு. a feeble prop or support. 5. [in grammatical rules.] Short, comprehensive words including further particulars, விதப்புக்கிளவி--as மன், பிற, நெறி, &c. சொல்வதிலேசுசெய்வதல்லவாபிரயாசம். It is easy to profess, but difficult to perform. 12)

uyr (p. 63) --உயரு, கிறேன், உயர்ந்தேன், வேன், உயர, v. n. To rise, become high, tall, elevated, to grow, or rise high, வளர. 2. To rise as water; to ascend as a paper kite; to rise towards the meridian as a heavenly body, மேலெழ. 3. To become proud, vain, self-conceited, consequential, to be elated, இறுமாக்க. 4. To be excellent, exalted, eminent, dignified, மேன்மையுற. In neuter forms it is found chiefly in the past tense. 5. To be raised or lifted up, உன்ன தப்பட. உயரப்பறந்தாலுமூர்க்குருவிபருந்தாமோ? Though it soars high, will the sparrow become a hawk? ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்மூவருக்கும். The study of the vedas belongs to the three superior castes. வரம்புயரநீருயருநீருயரநெல்லுயருநெல்லுயரக்குடி யுயருங்குடியுயரமுடியுயரும். As the banks are raised, the water will rise, as the water increases, so will the rice, rice will increase population, and as the population increases, so will the dignity of the crown. உயரநினைப்பவன்தாழ்வான். He who is intent to rise will fall. தானியமுயந்துவிற்கிறது. Grain sells cheap. மாற்றுயர்ந்தபொன். Gold of a superior quality, high standard. உயரஇருந்துவிழ, inf. To fall down from above. உயரக்கட்ட, inf. To build a structure higher. உயரக்கிளம்ப, inf. To rise--as a bird from the ground, &c. உயரப்பார்க்க, inf. To look upward. 2. To seek to rise, aspire, seek dignity, &c. உயரப்போக, inf. To go up. உயரவெறிய, inf. To fling up. உயரவேற, inf. To ascend, rise, to mount up. உயர், rel. part. High, elevated, eminent. உயரில்லறம், s. High domestic virtue. உயர்குலம்--உயர்ந்தகுலம், s. A high caste. உயர்குலத்தோர், s. Persons of high caste or family. உயர்திணை, s. [in grammar.] The superior or rational class. See திணை. உயர்தினம், s. A high day, a festival, பெருநாள். உயர்நிலம், s. High land, a hillock, a hill, மேடு. 2. The world of the inferior gods, தேவலோகம். 3. An upper room or terrace, உப்பரிகை. உயர்நிலத்தோர், s. The gods, the celestials, வானோர். உயர்நிலை, s. Swerga, சுவர்க்கலோ கம். 2. An upper room, மேன்மாடம். உயர்ந்தசரக்கு, s. Valuable commodities, choice articles. 2. [in sarcasm.] A great person--as, அந்தவுயர்ந்த சரக்குவரமாட்டாது, That precious piece of goods (great personage) will not deign to come hither. உயர்ந்ததமிழ், s. High poetic Tamil, above the comprehension of the vulgar. உயர்ந்தகுளச்சி, s. A kind of prepared arsenic, பவளப்புற்றுப்பாஷாணம். உயர்ந்தபாறை, s. A high rock. உயர்ந்தமனுஷன், s. A tall man. 2. A man of high station. உயர்ந்தவயசு, s. A great age, advanced age. உயர்ந்தோர், s. The great, the learned, the renowned, the exalted in piety, virtue, austerities, &c., sages, ascetics, சான்றோர். 2. High caste persons, உயர்குலத்தோர். 3. The celestials, வானோர். 4. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். உயர்மலை, s. A high mountain. உயர்ச்சி, s. [impr. உயர்த்தி.] Height, elevation, loftiness, altitude, eminence, sublimity, உயர்வு. 2. Excellency, superiority, dignity, moral worth, exaltation, மேன்மை. உயர்த்திதாழ்த்திபார்த்தல். Regarding the hours of one's caste, rank, property, &c., fastidiously. உயர்ச்சிகாட்ட, inf. To show one's superiority. 2. To exhibit one's real dignity. உயர்பு--உயர்வு, s. Height, loftiness, elevation, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Dignity, greatness, excellence, மேன்மை. 3. Increase, விர்த்தி. உயர்விக்க, inf. eṭṭu (p. 73) கிறேன், எட்டினேன், வேன், எட்ட, v. a. To stretch forth, to reach after, தாவ. 2. [with the dative.] To be obtained, be got, to be caught, அகப்பட. எட்டாதபூதேவனுக்கு. The flower that is out of reach is dedicated to God. [prov.] மனோவாக்குக்கெட்டாதது. What is incomprehensible or unutterable. கைக்கெட்டினதுவாய்க்கெட்டாமற்போயிற்று. The mouth did not get what the hand had reached--I almost got it, but it escaped my grasp. The fates were against me, &c. --spoken in cases of disappointment, &c. கண்ணுக்கெட்டினமட்டும். As far as the eye can see. எனக்கெட்டாது. I cannot reach it. 2. I cannot get it. 2. I cannot comprehend it. கிணற்றுக்கிந்தக்கயிறெட்டாது. This rope is not long enough for the well. எட்ட, inf. [used adverbially.] Far, far off, further, away, aloof, தூரமாக. எட்டநட. Step on, step out. எட்டப்போ--எட்டிப்போ. Go further. எட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To keep away, தூரமாக. மழையெட்டக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The rain has kept off a long time. எட்டவிட, inf. To communicate, inform. அவனுக்கிந்தச்சொல்லையெட்டவிடு. Communicate this news to him. எட்டாக்கை, s. A very distant place, not near enough to be serviceable. எட்டாதபொருள், s. Things incomprehensible--as the Divine being, mysteries, &c. எட்டுமட்டும்பார்க்க, inf. To endeavor as much as one can; to reach or attain a thing. எட்டிப்பறிக்க, inf. To reach and pluck. எட்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To peep, look over a wall, &c. 2. To make an effort, to reach a point or thing. எட்டினர், s. Friends, adherents, partisans, சிநேகிதர். (p.) 37)

eṇ (p. 73) s. Thought, imagination, conjecture, intention, எண்ணிக்கை. 2. Deliberation, counsel, care, விசாரம். 3. Number, enumeration, calculation, computation, இலக்கம். 4. Astronomical computation, astronomy, சோதிடநூல். 5. Estimation, esteem, honor respect, worthiness, மதிப்பு. 6. Strength, வலி. 7. Total measure, வரை யறை.--Note. Seven is regarded as the most lucky number, after which five and the other odd numbers have precedence. 8. Lowness in state or rank, inferiority, pitiableness, or despicableness, எளிமை. 9. Easiness of accomplishment, acquisition, access, &c.; what is not difficult, இலேசு. 1. A kind of rape, the plant or seed, எள்ளு. (p.) எண்ணுக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. 2. That which is incomprehensible. எண்ணுமெழுத்துங்கண்ணெனத்தகும். Arithmetic and grammar may be regarded as eyes. எண்ணெழுத்திகழேல். Think not lightly of numbers and letters, do not neglect reading and cyphering. எண்பொருளவாகச்செலச்சொல்லி. Communicating your thoughts in language easy to be understood-எண்சாத்திரம், s. The science of numbers, arithmetic, mathematics, கணி தம். எண்கூட்டல், s. Addition. எண்சுவடி, s. The multiplication table either of whole numbers, or fractions, ஓர்சுவடி. 2. An account book, கணக்குப்புஸ்தகம். எண்செய்யுள், s. A poem celebrating the country, town, names, titles, &c. of a hero. It consists of any number of verses from ten to onethousand inclusive. and is named from the number of verses it contains, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். எண்ணர், s. Astronomers, கணிதர். ஏரணங்காணென்பரெண்ணர். Astronomers will call this a treatise of arithmetic. (கோவை.) எண்ணிட, inf. To count, reckon, calculate. எண்ணிடஇடமொன்றியின்றியெங்கணும்நிறைந்த தன்றே. (The army) crowded the whole field so that there was hardly any room left--not so much as even to hold a rape seed. எண்ணில்கண்ணுடையோன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Budha, புத்தன். (p.) எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time, அளவில்லாதகாலம். (சத.) எண்ணிறக்க, inf. To exceed computation, conception, அளவிறக்க. எண்ணின்வகுப்பு, s. The tamil enumeration table which consists of thirty-six digits; viz.: 1. ஏகம், units. 2. தசம், tens. 3. சதம், hundreds. 4. சகஸ் திரம், thousands. 5. அயுதம், ten thousands. 6. நியுதம், hundred thousands, &c. எண்ணும்மை, s. aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. Powders of five ingredients given to women after child-birth, ஓர்மருந்து. ஐங்குரவர், s. The five superiors, ஐம்பெரியோர், viz.: King, அரசன்; guru, குரு; father, பிதா; mother, மாதா and elder brother, தமயன். In some classifications, உபாத்தியாயன் is placed instead of மாதா. ஐங்குழு, s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. [commonly ஐவேலி.] A creeping plant whose leaf is supposed to resemble the fingers, a pentadactyle, ஓர்கொடி, Bryonia laciniosa, L.-Note. In this plant the god Siva is said to have concealed himself when pursued by பஸ்மாசுரன், who had, by penance, obtained from him, as a boon, power to destroy all on whose head he should place his hand. ஐவிரல், s. [in Christian usage.] One who has repented; a convert. குணப்பண்பு, s. [in gram.] Sensible qualities of objects--as bitterness, whiteness--as distinguished from குறிப்புப்பண்பு, ideal quality, and தொழிற்பண்பு, acting quality. See பண்பு. குணப்பிழை, s. To change--as temper, disposition, character, symptoms, either for the better or worse. குணமுங்குற்றமும், s. Good and bad, virtues and vices, beauties and defects, commendation and censure, &c. குணமுடையவன்--குணமுள்ளவன், s. A kind-hearted, good-natured, generous man. 2. A well-bred man. குணமுற்றவன், s. A good-natured man. குணமுற்றவன் மணமுற்றவன்; குணமற்றவன் மண மற்றவன். A good-natured man will be praised; but an ill-natured man, despised. குணரத்தினாகரன், s. A well-disposed person; one of a good disposition. குணவவநுதி, s. [in rhet.] A kind of அவநூதி figure, in which a prorperty or quality universally predicated of an object is apparently denied, by affirming the opposite, either ironically or ambiguously. குணவாகடம்--குணபாடல், s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A species of simile; similitude, of qualities and properties. See பண்புவமை. குணன், s. A man of good qualities, generally found in compounds--as in அறுகுணன், சற்குணன். குணாதீதம், s. Freedom from all properties, குணங்கடந்துநிற்கை. குணாதீதன், s. God, He who is above all attributes; He whose attributes and perfections transcend our comprehension, கடவுள். Wils. p. 292. GUN'ATEE'TA. குணாலயன், s. The deity--as the seat and source of all perfections, கடவுள். இனியகுணம், s. A pleasant temper or disposition. நிர்க்குணன், s. The deity--as void of all properties, கடவுள். Wils. p. 474. NIRGUN'A. சத்துவகுணம், s. The first of the three principles, or properties in nature. 2. Nobleness of mind; magnanimity. 3. The exalted disposition of an ascetic's mind by which he disdains worldly delights, greatness, honors, &c. சற்குணம்--சுகுணம்--நற்குணம், s. A good disposition, kindness, benevolence, virtue. சற்குணன்--சற்குணி, s. A virtuous person; a good-natured person. சாத்தியகுணம், s. [in medi.] The condition or state of being curable; favorable symptoms; hopeful case. குணி, s. One endowed with good qualities, a good-tempered person, நற்குண முடையான். 2. [in gram.] A subject, any thing which possesses attributes or qualities--as distinguished from குணம், also, the names of such things, பண்பி. 3. [ex குணம், bow-string.] A bow, வில். (சது.) குணிப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. The four prevalent or prominent human qualities. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them.
