ciṟ (p. 189) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To be elegant, beautiful, adorned, magnificent, splendid, சிங்காரமாயிருக்க. 2. To be graceful, amiable, lovely, அழகாயிருக்க. (c.) 3. To be eminent, excellent, renowned, illustrious, மகிமைப்பட. 4. To exceed, surpass, excel, மேற்பட. 5. To be peculiar, distinguished, விசேஷிக்க. 6. To be dear, precious, valuable; flourishing, அருமையா யிருக்க. 7. To be abundant, excessive, intense, மிகுதியாக. 8. To be auspicious, lucky, fortunate--as a time, &c., மங்கலமாக. சிறந்தவோரை, s. The auspicious hour in planetary configurations. (p.) சிறந்தகாலம், s. A pleasant season. 2. A season of plenty. 3. A time of wealth. சிறந்தநடக்கை, s. An exemplary life. சிறந்தநாடு, s. A country abounding in water, agricultural productions, popoulation, towns, &c. சிறந்தநாமம், s. A celebrated name. 2. A sonorous or euphonic name. சிறந்தமாது, s. A beautiful female. tāṉam (p. 236) s. (Sa. Da'na.) Gift in charity, donation, grant, contribution--commonly with a religious motive, as a work of merit; meritorious alms being bestowed on special occasions, as at the birth of a child, at a funeral, at the last moment of life, &c., கொடை. 2. Liberality, munificence, bounty, ஈகை. 3. Benefit, succor, உதவி. 4. The rut of the elephant, யானைமதம். 5. (Sa. Ta'na.) A tune, இராகம். --Note. தானம், for the souls of deceased ancestors is made to some of the பிதிர் class of gods, regarded as representatives of those progenitors; பிதிர் gifts are called தியாகம். தானம், 3. Three kinds of gifts. 1. தலைப்படுதானம், this is to give what one has honestly acquired to such as are free from the three great vices, lust, anger and scepticism, and who addict themselves with cheerful submission to a virtuous life; and when giving, praying that the gift may be received, அறத்தா லீட்டியபொருளைமுக்குற்றமற்ற நற்றவத்தோரைக்கொ ள்கெனப்பணிந்து, குறையிரந்து, தம்முள்ளமுவந்தீ தல். 2. இடைப்படுதானம், bestowing through pity, &c. (See இடை.) 3. கடைப்படுதானம், the last and lowest kind of charity, is, bestowing alms from love of popularity or praise, the fear of losing favor, or mere kindness of disposition, சுயநலத்தைப் பற்றியீவது. தானம், 1. Ten kinds of gifts. See தசதானம். பசுவையடித்துப்புலிக்குத்தானங்கொடுக்கிறதா.... Would one kill a cow and make a present of it to a tiger? நீற்றுப்பூசணிக்காய்த்தானம், s. The gift of an ash-colored pumpkin, instead of the life of a sick person required by the configuration of the planets; also called, மிருத்துதானம், கூஷ்மாண்டதானம், and கூஷ்மாண்டம். This kind of pumpkin is never cut, it being supposed to possess life; when used for food, it is always broken. தானங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give alms. 2. To make donation, contributions, presents, &c. 3. To make donations to a guru or brahman in the last extremity. See தாசதானம். தானங்கொடுத்தபசு, s. A cow given to a brahman or to a temple, just before death. தானசீலன், s. A liberal, charitable man. தானதருமம்--தானதன்மம், s. Alms and presents. தானபத்திரம்--தானபத்திரிகை, s. A deed of gift. தானாதிகருமங்கள், s. Bestowing alms, and performing other religious rites and duties. 12) *

tāli (p. 234) s. The marriage badge tied on the neck of the bride, by the bridegroom, at the time of the wedding; and worn like a wedding ring, and an suspicious ornament, மாங்கல்லியம். (c.) தாலிப்பிச்சைக்கேட்க. The ask the boon of the wedding badge; i. e. for a wife, to plead for the life of her husband. தாலியறுப்பாய். Thou wilt lose thy wedding badge. (a curse.) தாலியைக்கட்டுவாய், Thou wilt fasten on another wedding badge be i. e. thou wilt lose thy wife. [prov.] அவளுடையதாலியிருப்புத்தாலியாயிருக்கவேண்டும். May her wedding badge be iron; i. e. enduring, may her husband live long. தாலிகட்டு, v. noun. Investing the bride with the wedding badge, on day of marriage. தாலிகட்டுமூர்த்தம். The auspicious hour for putting on the marriage badge. தாலிக்கயிறு, s. A twisted thread for the தாலி. தாலிக்குபொன்னுருக்க, inf. To melt gold for the wedding badge on an auspicious day. தாலிக்கோவை, s. A string of beads to which the marriage badge is attached. தாலிச்சரடு, s. [[prov.] தாலிக்கொடி.] A braided gold wire for the marriage badge. (c.) தாலிபெருக்கிக்கட்டுதல், v. noun. Appending beads with the marriage badge, accompanied with certain ceremonies-regarded as auspicious. தாலிப்பொருத்தம், s. [in astrol.] Such an agreement in the configuration of the heavenly bodies, in the horoscope of the two persons to be united, as is deemed propitious for the marriage; and the investiture of the bride with the தாலி. --Note. If the தாலிபொருத்தம் be unpropitious, the parties do not come together; the wedding is deferred. It is one of the தசப்பொருத்தம். தாலியறுக்க, inf. To tear off the wedding token at the husband's death. தாலியறுத்தவள், appel. n. A widow. one who has torn off the marriage badge. தாலியுரு, s. [loc.] Beads of different forms attached to the marriage badge. பொட்டுத்தாலி, s. A marriage badge made of a flat piece of metal. 65) *

Daily fortune, daily results of astrological configurations at the birth as written in some nativities. தினப்படி, s. Daily allowance. தினப்பாடு, adv. Every day. தினப்பிரளயம், s. The flood recurring at the close of each day of Brahma. தினமணி, s. (St.) Thew sun, as the pearl of the day. தினமயக்கம், s. Every day's illusion. சிவவாக். தினம்பார்க்க, inf. To distinguish lucky from unlucky days. தினவர்த்தமானம், s. Daily news. இன்றையதினம். To-day; நாளையதினம், tomorrow; நேற்றையதினம், yesterday; சுதினம், a good day--in salutation; துர்த்தினம், an unlucky day. தினாதினம், s. Various days. 2. A great or special day, (plural for sing. by way of eminence.) தினாந்தம், s. Evening, sunset, close of the day; [ex அந்தம், end.] தினாந்தரம், adv. Daily. 2. s. Intervening day or days, இடையாந்தரம். தினாம்சம், s. Part of a day; [ex அமிசம்.] தினாரம்பம், s. Beginning of a day, morning; [ex ஆரம்பம்.] தினார்த்தம்.s.
