tīṭcai (p. 242) --தீக்ஷை--தீக்கை, s. Initiation of disciple into the Siva religion by a Guru, who with appropriate ceremonies communicates the appointed mantras; also his introduction to any higher stage or degree in the system; குரூபதேசம். 2. Special means employed by a Guru for the instruction and mental illumination of a disciple; intended for the removal of his sins, and the ripening of his soul for emancipation, ஞானபோதனை. 3. The imparting of spiritual illumination to a soul ripening for absorption; its accumulated stock of merit and demerit--the results of former actions--together with its original மலம்--the source of these actions--being nearly exhausted by the joys and sufferings experienced in its former transmigrations, பக்குவான்மாவைக்க ரையேற்றல். 4. Performance of a course of austerities, விரதநியமம். 5. Performance of vows, சங்கற்பம். W. p. 41. DEEKSHA. --Note. There are seven kinds of தீட்சை. 1. சட்சுதீட்சை, சயனதீட்சை, by the eye or by looking on the disciple for the dispersion of his mental darkness and moral evils, and the communication of spiritual light. 2. பரிசதீட்சை, by the touch, or placing the right hand on the disciple's head, and touching five principle parts of his body, thus conferring on him the virtue of the five lettered incantations. 3. வாக்குத்தீட்சை, வாசகதீட்சை, oral instruction, and illumination. 4. மானசதீட்சை, by the mind or intense interest felt for the disciple, leading to the enlightening of his mind, &c. 5. சாத்திரதீட்சை, நூற்றீட்சை, spiritual illumination by means of the shastras. 6. யோகதீட்சை, பாவனதீட்சை, instruction by example, in character of the silent, motionless ascetic, in the eight postures prescribed. (See யோகம்.) 7. அ வுத்திரிதீட்சை, imparting instruction by symbolic figures, made on the ground, &c. This last is two-fold, ஞானாவுத்திரி, and கிரியாவுத்திரி.--Note. There are two other kinds of தீட்சை; 1. சபீசதீட்சை, instruction that has reference to future rites to make them complete; 2. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, instruction complete in itself. சிவதீட்சை--சைவதீட்சை, 3 The three stated introductory rites of the Saiva system. 1. சமயதீட்சை, the initiatory rite of discipleship. 2. விசேஷதீட்சை, special rite confirming the disciple, after which he eats in private, or unseen by those of lower degree, and his eligible to read, and receive instruction in the Agama mysteries. It is administered only to சைவர், who eat no flesh or fish. 3. நிருவா ணதீட்சை, the highest rite entitling the disciple to perform puja, to sit and eat with his Guru, and to enjoy all the privileges of the system. தீட்சதர், s. (plu.) Persons who have received the initiatory, or any succeeding rite of the Saiva religion, தீட்சைபெற் றோர். 2. The brahmans of சிதம்பரம், formerly said to have been three-thousand, தில்லைமூவாயிரவர். தீட்சதன், s. A disciple who has received the தீட்சை. தீட்சைகேட்க--தீட்சைபெற, inf. To receive தீட்சை of the guru. தீட்சைகொடுக்க--தீட்சைபண்ண--தீட் சைவைக்க, inf. To administer தீட்சை. தீட்சைபெற்றவன், appel. n. (neg. தீட் சையில்லாதவன்.) One who has received தீட்சை, to whom the secrets of religion may be communicated. 16)

Prescribed rules of religion, morals, caste, &c., or the practice of rules, வைதீகநிலை. 11. Situation or aspect of a planet in respect to its influence, கிரகநிலை. 12. Usage, முறைமை. 13. A stand, fixture, ஆதனம். 14. Pendent part of an ornament, ஆபர ணத்திற்றொங்கணி. 15. Appropriate or wonted place, habitation, place of residence, வசிக்குமிடம். 16. Place, location, இடம். 17. The earth, the world, பூமி. 18. Time, காலம். 19. [prov.] One of the two land measures, that applied to any but rice-lands. See நெல்லிலாச்சம். 2. Fordableness, ford, தாண்டுதுறை.-- The நிலை, (attitudes) in archery are; 1. பைசாசம், standing with one leg straight and the other bent, as devils are said to stand; 2. மண்டலம், standing with both knees bent out; 3. ஆலீடம், standing with the right knee bent out, and the left foot advanced; 4. பிரத்தியாலீடம், standing with the left knee bent and the right foot advanced. (சது.)--Note. Some authorities give a fifth posture, சமபாதம், standing with the feet even. நிலையுரியாய்ச்சீலையையுரிந்தான். He stripped or made himself naked. நிலையைவிட்டால்நீச்சு. If the fordable depth be left, one must swim--videlicet, give not up a certainty for an uncertainty. நிலைகலங்க, inf. To be disturbed, deranged, &c., in situation as a person or thing. நிலைகுலைக்க, inf. To ravish, &c. See குலை, v. a. நிலைகுலைய--நிலைகெட, inf. To lose one's situation, &c. See குலை, v. நிலைகேடு, s. Loss of a situation. நிலைகொள்ள, inf. To come into existence or operation. 2. To continue, to be permanent. நிலைக்கடகம், s. [prov.] A large, stationary basket, பெருங்கூடை. நிலைக்கண்ணாடி, s. A fixed lookingglass. See கண்ணாடி, under கண். நிலைக்கல், s. Bezoar, ஆட்டுக்கல். நிலைக்களம், s. Site, situation, location of a person or thing, இருப்பிடம். (p.) நிலைக்கால், s. Door-post, door-frame, வாசற்கால். நிலைக்குடி, s. Settled or naturalized inhabitants, proprietors of the soil, aborigines, பழங்குடி. நிலைக்குத்த--நிலைக்குத்திட, inf. To be fixed as the eyes at the approach of death. See குத்து, v. நிலைதவற, inf. To fall from one's station or rank. 2. To deviate from prescribed rules, morals, &c., to degenerate. நிலைதளம்ப, inf. To be moveable, நிலை தளர. 2. To be unsettled as a family, a government, &c., உறுதிகெட. 3. To fluctuate, to waver, to swerve, from the path of virtue, அலைய. 4. To be ruined in one's cicumstances, நலிந்துபோக. 5. To be neglected, as one's property or affairs, பராமரியாதுகிடக்க. நிலைத்தண்ணீர், s. Standing water in pools, tanks, &c. நிலைநிறுத்த, inf. To set up, establish one's self in better circumstances. 2. To restore to a right state in religion or morals. நிலைநிறுத்தக்கொடுக்க, inf. To fulfil a promise. நிலைநிற்க, inf. To stand firm in one's principles, to persevere, to maintain consistency. 2. To be permanent, lasting or enduring; to remain. நிலைநீங்காமை, s. Steadfastness. நிலைபரம், s. See நிலைவரம். நிலைபிடிக்க, inf. To get an office or residence, for one's self, தொழில்கைப்பற்ற. 2. To attain the right standing, &c., in religion, நிலைபெற. 3. To reach the goal, குறியடைய. நிலைபெற, inf. To be placed or situated, தங்க. 2. To gain a firm footing, உறுதிகொள்ள. 3. To persevere, to endure. நிலைபெறுத்தல்--நிலைபெறுத்துதல், v. noun. Fixing, establishing, placing, நிலைநிறுத்தல். 2. Rendering permanent, lasting, or durable, நீடிக்கச்செய்தல். 3. Preserving, protecting, காத்தல். (p.) நிலைப்பெறுத்துகை, v. noun. Elasticity, ஸ்திதஸ்தாபகம். (சது.) நிலைபேறு, s. A firm position or situation, அசையாமை. 2. Firm footing, stability, உறுதி. 3. A pillar or post, துண். 4. Final bliss, மோட்சம். (சது.) 5. Honor, reputation, character, மானம். நிலைப்பட, inf. To become permanent, lasting, durable. 2. To be fixed, steady, firm. 3. To become stationary, established. 4. To attain certainty, நிசப்பட. நிலைப்படுத்த, inf. To make permanent, lasting, durable. 2. To establish, settle, fix. 3. To make certain, நிசப்படுத்த. நிலைப்பரப்பு, s. [prov.] An extent or measure of land for grain. See நிலை. நிலைப்பாடு, s. Firmness, permanence, durability, உறுதிப்பாடு. நிலைமண், s. [prov.] Primitive, or native soil, as distinguished from கொட்டுமண், made ground. நிலைமண்டிலஆசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four species of ஆசிரியப்பா. See Beschi's Shen-Tamil Gram. p. 85. நிலைமண்டுதல், v. noun. Making a long stay in a place from home. 2. Sticking closely to a place, as a person, or animal. நிலைமாறுதல், v. noun. Changing place, principles or religion, being proselyted, இடமாறுதல். 2. [in gram.] Being changed in place--as letters, in words, as வைகாசி for வைசாகி, the latter being according to the original, சொல்லினெழுத்துமா றுதல். நிலைமொழி, s. [in gram.] The preceding or antecedent word, வருமொழிக்கு முதன்மொழி. நிலையகம், s. House, abode, வீடு. (p.) நிலையங்கி, s. A robe, a cloak. நிலையழிய, inf. To be unsettled as a kingdom, or ruined as a family, &c. 2. To depart from right principles, as நிலைதவற. 3. To be discomfited, தட்டழிய. நிலையழிவு, v. noun. Defeat, discomfiture, &c., as தட்டுக்கேடு. நிலையறிதல், v. noun. Knowing one's standing, rank, character or principles. நிலையாடி, appel. n. A weaver's swift. நெய்வார்கருவியுளொன்று. 2. Standing looking glass as நிலைக்கண்ணாடி. நிலையாகக்கேட்டல், v. noun. Hearing steadily, attentively, fixedly, உறுதிாயாய்க் கேட்டல். நிலையிடல், v. noun. Establishing, confirming, ஸ்தாபித்தல். நிலையியற்பொருள், s. A motionless inanimate thing. (p.) நிலையில்லாமை--நிலையின்மை, v. noun. (neg.) Transientness, transitoriness, அநித்தியம். 2. Fickleness, wavering, instability, உறுதியின்மை. நிலையில்லாதவன், appel. n. A changeable person, one who breaks his word. நிலையுடைக்கட்டை, s. A pivot. (R.) நிலையுடைமை, v. noun. Stability, firmness. (p.) நிலையுமல், s. [prov.] A large basket for grain, &c., kept stationary. நிலையுரல், s. A large mortar. நிலையூன்ற, inf. To take firm footing, become firmly settled in place, பலப் பட. 2. To become firmly rooted as a tree, வேரூன்ற. நிலைவரம், s. [improp. நிலைபரம். Tel. நிலவரமு.] State, condition, circumstances, நிலைமை. 2. Certainty, assurance, உண்மை. 3. Firmness, steadiness, sureness, உறுதி. நிலைவரப்பட்டவன், appel. n. A person who may be depended upon. நிலைவிளக்கு, s. Lamps placed in a square frame in a temple opposite the door; being stationary, not taken for other purposes. See சட்டவிளக்கு. ஒருநிலையாய்நிற்றல், v. noun. Continuing in a stationary posture. 2. [also ஒருகாலிலேநிற்றல்.] Persisiting, commonly in an improper request. 156)
