One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

uṇṭu (p. 59) [ex உள்.] Third pers. neut. sing. of the symbolic verb உள், but now used with all persons, in both numbers and in both திணை, it is, it exists, there is, there was, there are, there may be, there might be, &c. In some connexions, it implies a degree of uncertainly, குறிப்புவினை முற்று. 2. Existing, existence, a thing that exists, உள்ளது. This and the participle உள்ள, (with its appellative) are the only parts of the verb, generally brought into colloquial use. எனக்குத்தெய்வமுண்டு. God is my help, (எனக்கு is often omitted)--spoken of one when deserted, ill-treated, &c. அதற்குநானுண்டுஅவனுண்டு. This concerns him and me exclusively (you need not meddle with it). 2. He and I are responsible for that. உண்டில்லையெனல், Either affirming or denying. உண்டுபட, inf. [prop. உண்டாக.] To come into existence, to become formed or produced by natural process evident to the senses, to happen, occur, தோன்ற. 2. To have origin, உண்டாக. 3. To grow, thrive, flourish, முளைக்க. உண்டுபட்டனவெல்லாமழியும். All that is created will perish, or be reduced to its primeval elements. இதிலுப்புண்டுபட்டது. Salt is formed here. அங்கேயொருகலகமுண்டுபட்டிருக்கிறது. An insurrection is sprung up there. உண்டுபடுத்த, inf. [prov. prop. உண் டுபண்ண.] To make, create, &c.--as உண் டாக்க. 2. To fabricate, make a false story, ஏற்படுத்த. வேதம்உண்டுபடுத்தியசீர்த்திவியாதமுனி. Vedaviasar renowned as the compiler of the Vedas. (திருச்.) உண்டுபண்ண, inf. To make, bring into existence. உண்டுபண்ணிவைக்க, inf. To make, to establish, render permanent. 2. To rear plants, &c. 3. To establish one in life. உண்டென, inf. To say it is. 2. [vul. adverbially.] Much, exceedingly, more, நிரம்ப. உண்டெனத்தரவேண்டும். Give me more, give me liberally. 125)

cātaṉai (p. 175) s. W. p. 916. SA'DHANA. Steady and presevering practice, unwearied application, steady zeal, constancy, persistence in an opinion; steadfast maintenance of doctrines, &c., விடாதமுயற்சி. 2. Perfect imitation of life, appearance of reality--as in dramatic actions, நடித்துக் காட்டுகை. 3. Retaining malice, சலஞ்சாதிக் கை. 4. Dissimulation, misrepresentation, falsehood, பொய். (c.) இல்லையென்றொரேசாதனையாய்ச் சாதிக்கிறான். He obstinately persists in denying. சாதனைக்காரன், s. One who practises any dexterous act, சாதகம்பண்ணுகிறவன். 2. A dissembler, a hypocrite, மாமாலி. 3. A tenacious person; one who steadfastly maintains an opinion, or perseveres in a practice. சாதனைத்தீர்ப்பு, v. noun. Obstinately affirming or denying. (R.) சாதனைபண்ண, inf. To practise a dexterous art; to habituate one's self to austerities. 2. To dissemble thoroughly. 3. To imitate to the life. 4. To maintain an assertion, whether true or false, பிடிவாதஞ்செய்ய. கற்பசாதனை, s. Strengthening the body by the use of drugs, &c., to promote longevity. See கற்பம். யோகசாதனை, s. The practise of silent abstract devotion. See யோகம். 13)

cāti (p. 176) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [ex Sa. Sadha. W. p. 916.] To persist in denying, affirming, &c., to maintain firmly or tenaciously; to support declarations, argument, doctrine; to argue, to stand to, உறுதியாகச்சொல்ல. 2. To inure one's self to, to perservere, to adhere to, to practise, to continue the observance of, to retain and act on any principle or feelings --as hatred, &c., சலஞ்சாதிக்க. 3. To overcome, to conquer, வெல்ல. 4. To effect, to accomplish, to attain, நிறைவேற்ற. (c.) 5. [vul.] To triturate, to rub on carefully--as oil, plastering, paint, &c., தேய்க்க. 6. To continue the use of--as medicine, &c., until it becomes a second nature; to practise an art or course of devotion, அப்பியாசிக்க. 7. (c.) [ex Sa. Sata, to give.] To give, as a superior to an inferior, அருள. 8. To conclude, deduce, அனுமிக்க. தான்பிடித்தமுசலுக்கு மூன்றுகாலென்று சாதிக்கிறான். He persists in saying that the hare he caught had only three feet; i. e., he will affirm any thing. சுவாமிசாதித்தார். Swamy gave, or spoke. எனக்குப் பிரசாதஞ் சாதிக்கவேண்டும். Please give me of the sacred food. பொய்சாதிக்க, inf. To stand to a lie. கோபஞ்சாதிக்க, inf. To retain and give vent to anger. பகைசாதிக்க, inf. To cherish or retain and give vent to hatred. பகைவரைச்சாதிக்க, inf. To overcome enemies, சத்துருக்களையழிக்க. பத்திசாதிக்க, inf. To persevere in devotion. (p.) நிஷ்டைசாதிக்க, inf. To continue in silent meditation, as an act of devotion. சாதித்துப்பேச, inf. To persist in an assertion. சாதித்துப்பூச, inf. [vul.] To rub oil, &c., in the palm of hand. 2. nimiru (p. 277) -நிமிர், கிறேன், நிமிர்ந்தேன், வேன், நிமிர, v. n. To become erect or straight; to be unbent, uncoiled; to stand upright; to raise or hold the head erect, உயர. 2. To grow high, to be lofty, to shoot up as a youth, or a tree, வளர. 3. (fig.) To be proud, affected, arrogant, மேட்டிமைசெய்ய. 5. To be bold, firm or decided, commonly in a good sense, இறுமாக்க. (c.) 6. To run, ஓட. 7. To be close, thick, crowded, நெ ருங்க. 8. To return as a planet from a retrograde motion, கிரகந்திரும்பிநடக்க. நிமிர்ந்துநில். Stand erect. வயிறுநிமிரப்பிடித்தான். He ate to the full. அவன்இங்கேநிமிர்ந்துபோட்டதுமில்லைகுனிந்தெடுத் ததுமில்லை. He neither stands erect here, nor stoops; i. e. has no place. நிமிர்ந்தஆள், s. A grown person. 2. A bold or proud man. நிமிர்ந்தநடை, s. [prov. நிமிர்ந்தகூறு.] Haughty or supercilious behavior, அகங் காரநடை. நிமிர்ந்தபார்வையாய்நடக்க, inf. To walk looking upwards, through pride or carelessness. நிமிர்ந்துகொள்ள, inf. To be firm in maintaining, denying, &c. நிமிர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand erect. 2. To assert one's right with courage, as நிமிர்ந்துகொள்ள. நிமிர்ந்துபார்க்க, inf. To look with the heat erect. 2. To regard. படைமுழுதும் அவன் நிமிர்ந்துபார்க்கக்காணாது... The whole army shrunk from his erect look. நிமிர்ந்துபோக, inf. To become full. நிமிர்வு, v. noun. Erection, straightening, வளைவுமாறுகை. கூனிமிர்தல், v. noun. Being straightened--as the hump of a hump backed person, &c. 58)

purṭṭu (p. 324) கிறேன், புரட்டினேன், வேன், புர ட்ட, v. a. [vul. பிரட்டு.] To turn a thing over, சுருட்ட. 2. To overturn, to turn upside down as the soil in ploughing, to subvert, திருப்ப. 3. To nauseate, to feel sick, to retch, குமட்ட. 4. To deceive, to deny, to falsify or violate one's word, வஞ்சிக்க. 5. To pervert, to distort, மாறுப டுத்த. 6. To smear, to rub oil on the head, தேய்க்க. 7. To dirty, to stain or foul with dirt, அழுக்காக்க. 8. To refute, ஆட்சே பிக்க; [ex புரள்.] உலகத்தைப்புரட்டிப்போட்டான். He has turned the world upside down. புரட்டிப்புரட்டிப்பார்த்தான். pūcciyam (p. 329) s. Venerableness, that which is worthy of worship, மேன்மை. 2. Honor, reputation, கீர்த்தி. 3. Ostentation, display, ஆடம்பரம். W. p. 548. POOJYA. 4. Emptiness, or scantiness, as an auspicious term in denying a thing asked, இன் மை. 5. A concealment of one's poverty or defects, and assuming appearances, குற்றமறைக்கை. 6. [in astron.] A cipher in calculation, as standing in the place of a real number, but of no value. Thus sixty-three divided by seven, the quotient is nine, and பூச்சியம். 7. Blank in lotteries, திருவுளச்சீட்டின்தோற்பு. 8. [in calendar.] That which is unlucky or unpropitiousness, அதிஷ்டமின்மை. 9. Rareness, uncommonness, அருமை. சாப்பாட்டுக்குப்பூச்சியமாயிருக்கிறது. There is nothing to live upon. வேலைபூச்சியம். Want of work or employ. பூச்சியம்பண்ண, inf. To venerate, to esteem. 2. To conceal one's poverty, or defects. 3. To manage so as to get undeserved regard. 4. To make an old house or thing appear like new. பூச்சியவார்த்தை, s. An expression of respect, or a compliment, உபசாரச்சொல். பூச்சியன், s. māṟṟu (p. 352) கிறேன், மாற்றினேன், வேன், மாற்ற, v. a. To change, alter, வேறுபடுத்த. 2. To rectify, convert, cure, set straight, செம்மை ப்படுத்த. 3. To dispel, remove, நீக்க. 4. To derange, change, or alter for the worse, கெடுக்க. 5. To abrogate, repeal, கலைக்க. 6. To involve, reduce nature to its primitive elements by resolving the whole into the deity, நிக்கிரகிக்க. 7.
