aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். You who are (elegant) as a peacock, (addressed to a lady.) 128)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

ilkkṇm (p. 52) --இலட்சணம், s. A mark or spot, அடையாளம். 2. Quality, property;, inherent, natural or distinguishing characteristics, good or estimable qualities, இயல்பு. 3. Appropriate or required properties or perfections--as of the deity, அசாதாரணதருமம். 4. Compound parts, qualities or members, உறுப்புகள். 5. Elegance, symmetry, being well proportioned or formed, comeliness, decency, beauty, சிறப்பு. 6. Philology, grammar, இலக்கியத்தினமைதி, embracing five parts, பஞ்சலக்கணம்; viz.: 1. எழுத்திலக்கணம், orthography or the nature and powers of letters with the changes that occur in the construction and combination of words. 2. சொல்லிலக்கணம், etymology or the nature, properties and use of words. 3. பொருளிலக்கணம், properties of things, (1. அகப்பொருள். 2. புறப்பொருள்.) 4. யாப்பிலக் கணம், prosody. 5. அணியிலக்கணம், rhetoric. இலக்கணச்சாட்சி, s. Grammatical authority. இலக்கணச்சிதைவு, s. The change of a word from its original form, including syncope, elision, augmentation, &c., grammatical anomaly, இலக்கணவழு. இலக்கணச்சுழி, s. A lucky curve or curvature in the lines of the body, in the hair of horses, &c., நற்சுழி. இலக்கணச்சொல், s. Proper words or words in their natural state--the first of the six classes. See வழக்கு. இலக்கணநூல், s. Grammar, a treatise on grammar or philology. இலக்கணப்போலி, s. Words resembling இலக்கணச்சொல்--being compound words with the natural order reserved, words usual but not elegant. See வழக்கு. இலக்கணவழக்கு, s. There is no administration of justice; no justice or satisfaction can be obtained. கேள்விமுயல். Be prompt in receiving information. கேள்விகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to listen--not elegant. கேள்விமறுமொழி, s. Question and answer; a catechism. கேள்விக்கடுதாசி, s. [prov.] Written application to a court of justice. 2. Tenders or proposals in writing. கேள்விக்காரர், s. [prov.] Bidders at an auction. 2. Persons who tender proposals at a purchase. 3. Candidates or applicants for an office. கேள்விச்செவி, s. Listening credulously to hear-say reports. கேள்விச்செவியன் ஊரைக்கெடுத்தான். The credulous ruler ruined the country. கேள்விப்பத்திரம், s. [prov.] A request, application, petition, &c., in writing. கேள்விகேட்பாடு, s. [local.] Judicial inquiry, investigation. கேள்வியற்றஊர்--கேள்வியில்லாதஊர், s. A town without justice. கேள்விமுறை, s. Inquiry into; superintendence, control, management. கேள்வியாக, inf. To be heard, to be reported; to reach the ears--as news; to be heard in court. கை கைகாட்டு, v. noun. Gesture with the hand, as in dancing; beck of the hand. கைகுவிக்க, inf. To hold up the hands joined, in worship, &c. See குவி. கைகுறண்ட, inf. To have the hands bent by spasms. 2. To be cramped in the hands. 3. To be stingy, parsimonious, close-fisted. கைகூச, inf. To be backward in using the hand. See கூசு. கைகூட, inf. To come to hand, be obtained, to succeed, அனுகூலப்பட. அவன்செய்வதெல்லாம் அவனுக்குக் கைகூடும். All that he does prospers. கைகூப்பு, v. noun. Raising the joined hands in worship--as கூப்பு. 2. The distance from the tip of the fingers to the feet, when the hands are joined and raised above the head. கைகொட்ட, inf. To clap the hands. கைகோக்க, inf. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)

The things to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem, addressed to a hero or heroine: 1. மங்கலம், an auspicious word. 2. சொல், a word natural, elegant, unequivocal, and that will scan well. 3. எழுத்து, a word composed of an odd number of letters. 4. தானம், formed of letters taken from any of the first three of the five classes of தானம் (which denote the five stages of life), counting from the first letter of the name of the hero. 5. பால் formed of masculine or feminine letters according to the sex of the person. 6. உண்டி, composed of benign letters. 7. வருணம், of letters appropriate to the caste. 8. நாள், of letters belonging to an asterism, which has no malign aspect on that of his birth. 9. கதி, of letters of the first two families or species. 1. கணம், a word appropriate to some of the first four of the eight கணம், as it regards the feet, &c. செய்யுட்போக்கு, v. noun. Poetic style, idiom, phraseology, classical usage, poetic language. செய்யுணடை, s. Poetic usage, or style. 2. The metre of a verse in respect to its feet, or movement in reading or singing. செய்யுளாக்க--செய்யுள்செய்ய, inf. To put prose into verse, make poetry. செய்யுள்வழக்கு, s. Poetic usage, style, or phrascology, classical usage; oppos. to உலகவழக்கு, or பரவைவழக்கு, common usage. செய்யுள்்்விகாரம், s. Poetical changes. which are nine--as 1. வலித்தல். 2. மெலித் தல். 3. நீட்டல். 4. குறுக்கல். 5. விரித்தல். 6. தொகுத்தல். 7. முதற்குறை. 8. இடைக்குறை. 9. கடைக்குறை, which see in their places. செய்யுளியல், s. Sweet fruit. தீஞ்சுவை, s. Delicious taste. தீஞ்சொல், s. Pleasant expression. harmonious speech. தீந்தமிழ், s. Polished or elegant Tamil. தீம்பால், s. Sweet milk. தீம்புகை, s. pāẕ (p. 313) s. Desolation, devastation, dilapidation, சேதம். 2. Damage, waste, loss, நஷ்டம். 3. Corruption, decay, putrifaction, கெடுதி. 4. Abortiveness, failure, miscarriage, கருவழிவு. 5. Baseness, wretchedness, evil, அப்பிரயோசனம். 6. That which is unadorned, or naked--as the forehead without ashes, அந்தக்கேடு. 7. Insipidness, vapidness, profitlessness, வீண். 8. Emptiness, inanity, வெறுமை. 9. Non-existence, nothingness, இன்மை. 1. The vast expanse, void-space, vacuity--as the peculiar abode of Deity, ஆகாயம். 11. Vacuum of the mind, mental abstraction, &c., சூனியம்-Note. A hard consonant following this word is doubled; or its correlative nasal is substituted; the latter is the more elegant. --In Jaffna பாழ் is changed, to பாண், regularly in combination, before ஞ, ந, ம--as பாண்ஞானம், பாணாடு, பாண்மனை and improperly before க, வ, &c., பாண்கிணறு, பாண்வீடு. பாழூருக்குநரியேராசா. In a ruined town the jackal is lord பெண்ணைப்பாழிலேதள்ளினேன். I have thrown my daughter into a desert; by an unhappy marriage. பாழிலே--பாழுக்கு. In vain, to no purpose. பாழுக்கிறைக்க, inf. To labor, or spend time in vain; (lit.) to water in vain. பாழ்க்கடிக்க, inf. [v. noun. பாழ்க்கடி ப்பு.] To desolate, devastate, to reduce to ruins, பாழ்படச்செய்ய. பாழ்ங்கிணறு, s. An empty, neglected or decayed well. பாழ்ங்குடி, s. A desolate, distressed family. பாழ்ஞ்சேரி--பாழ்நத்தம், s. A decayed or deserted village. பாழ்நிலம், s. Barren land. பாழ்ந்துரவு, s. A decayed well. பாழ்ம்புறம், s. Desolated regions. பாழ்பட, inf. To be ruined, desolated, கெட. பாழ்வாயன், s. [fem. பாழ்வாய்ச்சி.] A complainer without cause. பாழ்வாய்கூற, inf. To manifest ingratitude by saying. I received nothing; to murmur. பாழ்வெளி, s. The vast expanse or vacuum in which Deity is supposed to dwell. 2. A desert or uninhabited region, மைதானவெளி. 42)

puṭṭi (p. 322) --புஷ்டி, s. Stoutness, robustness, பருமை. 2. Fatness, plumpness, increase, கொழுப்பு. W. p. 546. PUSHT'I. சப்தபுஷ்டியும்அர்த்தபுஷ்டியுமுள்ளசாஸ்திரம்.
