aṇai (p. 9) s. An artificial bank, dam or ridge for retaining water in fields, வரம்பு. 2. An embankment, causeway, (as Adam's bridge, so called,) அணைக்கட்டு. 3. A bank of a tank, river, sea shore, &c., கரைப்பொது. 4. Pillow, cushion, mattress, மெத்தை. 5. (c.) A support, prop, buttress; anything to recline or lean on, முட்டு. 6. Protection, help, assistance, accessoriness to a crime, &c., உதவி. 7. Accompaniment, attendance, adjunct, துணை. 8. A yoke of oxen with a prefix of number; as, ஓரணை, one yoke of oxen, ஈரணை, two yokes of oxen, மூவணை, three yokes of oxen. வெள்ளம்வருமுன்னேயணைபோடவேண்டும், Before the flood comes and the water rise, we must cast up the dam. அணைக்கட்டு, s. An anicut. அணைசொல், s. A word spoken to assist another, a prompting, துணைச்சொல். 2. An expletive, அசைச்சொல். அணையாடை, s. A clout or strip of cloth put under an infant, ஏணைத்துகில். 2. [local.] Cloth tied over the navel of an infant, தொப்புளிறுக்குஞ்சீலை. பஞ்சணை, s. The five kinds of beds, or mattresses. தலையணை, s. A pillow. புல்லணை, A layer of grass. பூவணை, s. āḷi (p. 43) s. The lion as the king of beasts, சிங்கம். 2. A governor, a master, ஆள்வோன். 3. Leo the zodiacal sign, சிங்க விராசி. 4. A fabulous animal (the யாளி.) like a lion, but with a proboscis as an elephant. 5. A kind of seed, ஆளிவிதை. 6. An embankment, or boundary for keeping up water, செய்கரை. 7. Bank in general, கரைப்பொது. 8. [vul.] An oyster, மட்டி. 9. An appellative affix, mas. or fem. joined to nouns--implying a ruler, owner, manager, master, one who owns a thing, possesses a quality, &c.,--as from பகை is formed, பகையாளி. ஆளியூர்தி, s. Kali and Durga, so called because conveyed on an animal of the lion kind. 57)

iṭukku (p. 45) s. The claws of a lobster, scorpion, &c., கொடுக்கு. 2. A small hole, nook or corner--as the parting between the fingers or teeth, the arm-pit, any parting where a thing becomes infixed, confined, pressed, &c., a recess, சந்து. 3. Narrowness, trouble, துன்பம். பல்லிடுக்கிலேயகப்பட்டுக்கொண்டது. It has stuck between the teeth. இடுக்கணி, s. [prov.] A corner, nook where a thing may be held--as under the arms, between the fingers, under the hams, or where a person or thing may become confined, jammed in, wedged in, &c. இடுக்குமரம், s. A narrow passage through posts to a field, for men, which cattle cannot pass, கடவைமரம். இடுக்குமுடக்கு--இடுக்குமுடுக்கு, s. A close, confined place, a narrow corner, முட்டுச்சந்து. 2. Straits, difficult circumstances, embarrassment, difficulty, சங்கடம். (c.) இடுக்குவழி, s. A narrow way or lane. இடுக்குவாசல், s. A strait gate. 96)

iṟngku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறங்கினேன், வேன், இறங்க, v. n. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To disembark, get out of a boat, or from one boat into another of smaller size, கப்பலினின்றிறங்க. 5. To be taken down, unladed, unladen, disburdened, சாமானிறங்க. 6. To fall or sink into the appropriate place--as a post into its hole, to be driven home--as a nail, உள்ளிறங்க. 7. To sink--as a denser body, to settle to the bottom--as earth in water, water in oil, &c., அமிழ. 8. To arrive at a place other than one's home, to pitch, alight, encamp --as an army. to halt, பாளயமிறங்க. 9. To get into the right road, நேர்வழியிலிறங்க. 1. To be brought down or reduced, தாழ்வடைய. 11. To abate--as fever commencing with the head and descending to the extremities, சுரமிறங்க. 12. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. The subsiding of swelling, &c. from the head to the extremities, விக்கமிறங்கல். இறவு, v. noun. Lapse, passage, a place of descent, செல்கை. 5)

uṭai (p. 59) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To break a vessel, &c.; to burst, break open, break a bank, &c.; to break lumps, clods, &c.; to break a boil, a blister, the skull or any other flat, solid or massive substance; to split, fracture, தகர்க்க. 2. To break the ranks of an enemy, to defeat, discomfit, disperse, rout, put to flight, இரிக்க. 3. To ruin, impoverish one, கெடுக்க. 4. To untwist, untwine, முறுக்கவிழ்க்க. 5. v. n. To break--as a boil, கட்டியுடைக்க.-Note. உடைய and உடைக்க are not applicable to the breaking of a tree, a branch, an arm or any other long and cylindrical body that is broken off short or asunder. For this meaning see முரிக்க, ஒடிக்க, &c. தண்ணீருடைத்துப்பாய்கிறது. The water has broken (the dam) and flows out. பல்லுடைப்பேனென்றான். He said, I will break your teeth. கட்டுடைக்க, inf. To burst an embankment--as water. பெண்மையுடைக்கும்படை, s. The weapon that dissolves female continency. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To take much pains, mentally--as in abstruse calculations, intricate business. உடைப்பு, v. noun. A breaking, a breach, the bursting of a bank, உடை க்கை. 2. s. A channel out or broken through a dam in a field, disruption, உடைந்தஅறுவாய். 3. Weakness, தளர்ச்சி. தலையுடைப்பு, v. noun. A trouble, some intricate employment. 102)

eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. To take a subject, to discourse, write, think on, look out, find a place in a book, &c., ஆராய்ந்தெடுக்க. 6. To adduce (an argument), ஒன்றையெடுத்துப்பேச. 7. To strike (a sound), pitch the key-note, to try the lightness of a bow-string by striking it, இசையெடுக்க. 8. To select, choose, (as a spot, for a house, a well, &c.), தெரிந்துகொ ள்ள. 9. To buy, purchase (chiefly applicable to cloth), வாங்க. 1. To bear, carry, sustain, சுமக்க. 11. To weigh in a balance, நிறுக்க. 12. v. n. [in combination.] To rise, extend itself, become spread, or liffused, to be attacked with pain, &c., மயக்கமெடுக்க. 13. To swell, heave, rise in billows, எழும்ப. 14. To keck, puke, vomit, வாந்தியெடுக்க. எடுக்கத்தொடுக்கவிடான். He will not let me begin; spoken figuratively in allusion to the discharge of arrows. எடுப்பாரும் பிடிப்பாருமுண்டானாலிளைப்புந்தவிப்பும் மெத்தத்தோன்றும். Where there are many attendants much trouble is experienced. பிள்ளைக்குமூக்கெடுக்க. To raise or force out the upper part of the nose of an infant--as a nurse by pressing with two fingers. அரசனாலயமெடுத்தான். The king has built a temple. இந்தப்பாரமெடுக்கமாட்டேன். I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A docile, tractable, yielding person; one who has no opinion of his own. எடுத்துக்கட்ட, inf. To fabricate, invent. எடுத்துக்கட்டு, v. noun. Fabrication, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. Invention--as of a word. எடுத்துக்காட்டல், v. noun. An author's adducing examples, illustrations, &c. (See உத்தி.) 2. Citing, quoting, &c. எடுத்துக்காட்டு, s. An example, illustration, உதாரணம். எடுத்துக்கைநீட்ட, inf. To help one--as a waiter, or attendant. எடுத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To take to one's self, தனக்காகக்கொள்ள. 2. To be overcome in argument--as a party in controversy, &c., to be confuted, தோற்றுப்போக. அவள்பேச்சினாலயலெல்லாமெடுபடுகின்றது... The whole neighborhood is raised by her clamor. எடுபட்டவள், s. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... The school which existed there formerly has been abolished. உன்னால்நானெடுபட்டுப்போவேனா. Am I to be defeated by you? எடுபாடு, s. Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To enter upon an occupation. 2. To suspend one from office. பூவெடுக்க, inf. To gather flowers. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To dig a well. 2. [prov.] To select a spot for a well in reference to the situation of the house and other surrounding objects that ill luck may not result, as also to the nature of a soil or the depth at which water may be found, judged of by the produce of the land, &c. வயிறெடுக்க--வயிறுகடுப்பெடுக்க, inf. To have a looseness. தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language from other authors. See உத்தி. எடுப்பு, v. noun. The act of taking off, taking up, தூக்குகை. 2. Elevation, உயரம். 3. Taking in hand, undertaking attempt, engagement, தொடங்குகை. 4. Insolence. arrogance, pride, haughtiness, superciliousness, இறுமாப்பு. 5. Elation, a style of living above one's rank, circumstances, மேட்டிமை. 6. Abusive words, நிந்தை. எடுத்தஎடுப்புவிடான். He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. Taking up, தூக் குகை. 2. Weighing, நிறுக்குந்தொழில். 3. A weight, நிறையளவு. 4. Assumption, adoption, ஏற்றுக்கொள்கை. 5. [ex எடுப்பு, to rouse.] Rousing from sleep, &c., எழுப் புகை. ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். Increasing heat or sunshine as the sun rises towards the meridian, காலைவெய்யில்--opp. இறங்குவெய் யில். ஏறெடுக்க, inf. To lift up the head, eyes, &c., மேலெடுக்க. 82)

He has put me in the loft, and taken away the ladder; i. e. he has induced me to engage in the business and then deserted me. நிறைந்ததண்ணளியினனென்பாரதனைக்குடைமேலேற் றிமுழுமதிமுக்குடையென்றார். he said, the triple, full-moon-like umbrellas--thus transferring the benignant qualities of the possessor to the umbrella. ஐ. The diphthong ai, the ninth vowel, ஒன்பதாமுயிர். It may be written for அய் or vice versa. In the beginning and middle of a word, when followed by ச, ஞ், or ய, ஐ is sometimes substituted for அ--as அரைசன் for அரசன்; மைஞ்சு for மஞ்சு; ஆலையம் for ஆலயம்; மையல் for மயல். Words beginning with ஐ often take அய் instead--as அய்ய ன் for ஐயன்; அய்யோ for ஐயோ, &c. 2. The form of the second or accusative case, இரண் டனுருபு--as அவனை, him. 3. A termination of the second pers. sing. முன்னிலையொருமைவி குதி--as பெரியை, thou art great; வந்தனை, thou art come. 4. A termination of nouns chiefly feminine, பெயர்விகுதி--as தெரிவை, a woman; தந்தை, a father. 5. An expletive இதையதின்மேலேற்றிச்சொல்லலாம். This is applicable to that. தன்வருத்தத்தைமாலைப்பொழுதின்மேலேற்றி. Ascribing her sufferings to the evening twilight. குற்றத்தையென்மேலேற்றப்பார்தான். He sought to fix the blame on me. ஏற்றிப்போட--ஏற்றிவிட inf. To transport, to export goods. ஏற்றுதுறை, s. Place of exportation or embarkation, துறைமுகம். ஏற்றுமதி, s. Export. 2.
