ilingkam (p. 54) s. A sign, mark, token, symbol, அடையாளம். 2. The penis. ஆண்குறி. 3. The phallus or linga--a representation of the membra viri et mulieris used in temples as an object of worship, and regarded as deity under this emblem. It is also made of gold or silver and worn in a casket on the arm, the breast, or some other part of the body, as an amulet and as an object of veneration and worship. In both these cases it represents both sexes in conjunction, being emblematical of Siva and Sacti, or the male and female energies of the deity, சிவலிங்கம். In the Agama philosophy three lingas are mentioned; viz.: 1. Streelinga (ஸ்திரீலிங்கம்) the same as விந்து--the female linga common to male and female--including in both sexes the organs for secreting and containing the seminal fluid. 2. Purshalinga (புருட லிங்கம்) same as நாதம் (Natha) male linga, also common to both sexes, including in both sexes the genital organs for transmitting and combining the two productions essential to generation. 3. Napunchakalinga, (நபுஞ்சகம்) same as அலி, Ali or Alilinga, the neuter or rather hermaphrodite linga, being the physiological foundation of the other two, both as to their organization and functions. The image linga often bears this name; these three are distinguished by the terms அவன், அவள், அது. They are physiological and are found in such works as தத்துவக்கட்டளை, &c. There is another class of lingas called பஞ்சலிங் கம், the five lingas, popularly represented as deity under the emblems of the five elements, and worshipped in as many celebrated temples, viz.: பிருதிவிலிங்கம், earth-linga, worshipped at Canjeevara-அப்புலிங்கம், water-linga, worshipped at Tiruvanaicka--தேயுலிங்கம், fire linga, worshipped at Tiruvannamalay--வாயுலிங்கம், air-linga, worshipped at Tirukalatti-ஆகாயலிங்கம், ether-linga, worshipped at Sethumbaram. These are properly of a metaphysical or mystical character and belong to the arcana of Hinduism. The above designations are for popular use and are given from their physiological connection with the five bodies or casements of the soul, whose natural bases are the elements. earth, water, fire, air and ether, respectively. Among the initiated, the following are the terms employed, viz.: 1. ஸ்திரீலிங் கம், Streelinga--this is properly the organ entire--male and female with its functions; it is a figure (உரூபம்) the only one of the five to which form is ascribed. There is but one image, the representation of this. The சரிதை course of worship, i. e. the popular puranic course belongs to this. 2. புல்லிங்கம், this is defined to be உணர்வு; the course here is that of instruction and perception as to the action of the instrument, &c. To this belongs the கிரியை course of worship, the second great stage. 3. நபுஞ் சகலிங்கம், this is the stage of darkness, of neutrality, called the stage of darkness and doubt, and, as a course of worship, is included in the succeeding one. 4. பரமலிங் கம், this comes under the dominion of மயேச் சுரன், the concealer, and is called மறைப்பு; the course here is that of யோகம், the third great stage. 5. மகாலிங்கம், this is தெளிவு, the course of ஞானம், the last stage which exempts from births, and secures absorption in the supreme essence. Wils. p. 72. LINGA. இலிங்ககோளம், s. Glans penis. (Anat.) இலிங்கங்கட்டி--இலிங்கதாரி, s. One who wears the linga. இலிங்கசங்கமம், s. Symbols of the sexes united--probably a personification of the active energy of the deity and of matter, represented in metal. &c., or formed in the mind as objects of contemplation and worship. இலிங்கசூலை, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கபுடோல், s. The ஐவிரலி, creeper, Bryonia, L. இலிங்கபுராணம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, புராணம்பதினெட்டிலொ ன்று. இலிங்கப்புற்று, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கரோகம், s. The venereal disease, ஆண்குறியில்வருமோர்புண். இலிங்கர்--இலிங்கிகள், s. Ascetics, Rishis who wear the Linga, சைவ தவப்பாலோர். இலிங்கி, s. An ascetic. 2. A worshipper of Siva, under the phallic emblem. 3. A hypocrite, a pretended devotee. ஸ்படிகலிங்கம், s. A linga made of quartz. பாணலிங்கம், s. A stone in the form of a linga--found in the river Nurbudda. பிரசாதலிங்கம், s. What is dedicated to Siva. பார்த்திபலிங்கம், s. Any thing assumed as an emblem of linga, and worshipped. சுயம்புலிங்கம், s. A linga supposed to be self-existent. சங்கமலிங்கம், s. A man of the Changama sect. குருலிங்கம், s. A spiritual father, a confessor. 17)

oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. Absorption of the senses by sleep, syncope, the approach of death, &c., unconsciousness, stupor. 49)

Those parts of the Vedas which inculcate works, rites, and ceremonies, கருமகாண்டம்--opposed to ஞா னகாண்டம். கிரியாங்கம், s. Worship, rites and ceremonies, chiefly applicable to prescribed individual practice--as preparing the sacred ashes, repeating the incantations, touching the joints of the fingers while repeating them, &c., கிரியையுறுப்பு. கிரியாங்கம்பண்ண, inf. To perform the several external actions in the daily worship. கிரியாசத்தி, s. lit. The operative energy or power. [in the agama philosophy.] One of the three active or female energies of Siva, by which he effects the creation or evolution of the universe. 2. the faculty or power of action, operation, &c., as applied to any agent. (சிவ. சி.) கிரியாசாதனம், s. Being trained or inured to the performance of works, religious duties, &c., கிரியையனுட்டிப்பு. கிரியாசைவம், s. One of the sixteen divisions of the Siva system. See சைவம். கிரியாசொரூபன், s. One who is the embodiment, கிரியை; (appropriately) Ganesa, who is considered the impersonation of Siva's divine operations. கிரியாதீதன், s.கிரியையொழிந்தவன். கிரியாபதம், s. [in Sanscrit grammar.] A verb, வினைச்சொல். கிரியாபாதம், s. The second of the four stages or degrees in the Siva worship; [ex கிரியை, et பாதம்.] கிரியாபூசை, s. The worship offered to Siva by one in the second degree. (p.) கிரியாமார்க்கம், s. Inflection or conjugation of verbs, chiefly in Sanscrit, வினைச் சொல்லின்ரூபகரணம். கிரியாவதி, s. A person who practices the rites and ceremonies enjoined in the Vedas. கிரியாவுத்திரி, s. Transcendental and symbolical instruction in the most spiritual rites, by a guru to an advanced disciple--opposed to ஞானாவுத்திரி. (சிவ. சி.) கிரியைகெட்டது, appel. noun. Any thing disorderly, slovenly, ஒழுங்கற்றது. கிரியைகெட்டவன், s. One destitute of good manners, slovenly in dress, or irregular in habits. கிரியைக்காரன், s. One in the second degree of the Siva religion. கிரியைக்கேடு, s. slovenliness, debauchery, beastliness, ஒழுங்கின்மை. கிரியைசெய்ய, inf. To perform actions, duties, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 2. To perform funeral rites, உத்திரகிரியைசெய்ய. கிரியையனுட்டிக்க, inf. To perform rites, and ceremonies. 2. To practice the daily rites, to perform the duties of the second degree. கிரியையொழிந்தவன், s. One who has dispensed with works, having attained a higher degree, கிரியாபாதங்கடந்தவன். காட்டுக்கிரியை, s. cattinipātam (p. 159) s. ciṟparam (p. 189) s. Deity operating under various forms and characters, assumed for the purpose; or the female energies of deity as distinguished from தற்பரம், the male principle, or quiescent deity, கடவுள். --According to the Vedantic theory every thing in nature is resolved into these two principles. 2. taṟ (p. 230) [prop. தத்.] A Sanscrit prefix in Tamil, the த் being changed to ற் before க், ச், ப். தற்காலம், s. The exact precise time of an action or occurrence, the expected time, the given time being, நிகழ்காலம். 3. Coincidence in time, அக்காலம். 4. [astron.] A given time for which calculation is made.--Note. This word is often used synonymously with தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், which see. தற்காலகிரகநிலை, s. Planetary positions at a given time. 2. The horoscope at the moment of birth. (A term used in nativities.) தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், s. The true longitude or position of a planet at a fixed time. தற்காலமத்திமம், s. The mean longitude at a given time. தற்காலவிலை, s. The price at the time. தற்காலவிலைப்படிதருவேன். I will give as the price may be at the time. தற்காலிக்க, inf. [in astron.] To determine longitude, &c., for a given time, to make a reduction in the elements of calculation of the time given or sought. தற்சணம்--தச்சணம்--தட்சணம்--த க்ஷணம், s. Words from the Sanscrit used in Tamil, or any of the other cognate languages, without change--as கமலம், the letters of which are the same in Sanscrit and Tamil, but சக்தி in Tamil, is சக்தி in Sanscrit.
