Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். A species of plantain, ஓர்வாழை. கல்லகம், s. A rocky mountain, மலை. கல்லக்காரம், s. Candied molasses, candy, பனங்கற்கண்டு. கல்லக்காரம்விளைய, inf. To become candied-as the molasses of sweet toddy. கல்லங்காய், s. A fruit which becomes as hard as a stone, கற்காய். கல்லடிக்க, inf. To hew or cut stone. 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. A doll, statue, a puppet. சித்திரப்பா, s. As சித்திரகவி. சித்திரப்பாவை, s. A portrait or picture of a person or persons, real or imaginary, a carved figure. (நன்.) சித்திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A picture, a portrait. சித்திரப்பூம்பட்டாடை, s. Flowered silk cloth. (c.) சித்திரப்பேச்சு, s. Artful speech, cunning, jesting shrewdness. சித்திரமண்டபம்--சித்திரச்சாலை, s. A painted chamber or hall. சித்திரமெழுத, inf. To draw a picture, to paint, to sketch. (c.) சித்திரவெழுத்து, s. Elegant, nice, beautiful writing; caligraphy. 2. Variegated or fancy painting. 3. An anagram, as ஞிமிறு for மிஞிறு. சித்திரரேகை, s. Ornamental lines drawn on the body of a person. 2. One of the lines in the hand. 3. The wife of Kuvéra, குபேரன்மனைவி. சித்திரர்--சித்திரக்காரர், s. Fancy painters, portrait painters, limners, embroiderers. 2. Artizans, carvers, sculptors, engravers, சிற்பர். 3. Carpenters, தச்சர். சித்திரவதை--சித்திராக்கினை, s. Cutting and slashing in battle, prolonged butchery, cutting off member after member. 2. Ingenious and varied torture in inflicting death. (c.) சித்திரவித்தாரன், s. One artful, clever, or dexterous; one fluent in speech. (p.) சித்திரவித்தை, s. The art of fancypainting, sculpture, carving, engraving, &c. சித்திரவேலைக்காரர், s. Any fancyworkers, imitators of nature--as flower makers, artizans, sculptors, engravers. 2. Fancy-painters. (c.) சித்திரவேளாகொல்லி, s. A mode of music, a fine melody, கொல்லித்திறத்தினொ ன்று. ciṟumai (p. 189) s. Smallness, littleness, diminutiveness, அற்பம். 2. Want, indigence, misery, wretchedness, poverty, adversity, தரித்திரம். 3. Oppression, suffering, துன்பம். 4. Disease, நோய். 5. Inferiority, youth, minority, இளமை. 6. Scantiness, paucity, fewness, scarceness, குறைவு. 7. Failure, swerving from a virtuous, or religious course and consequent disgrace, இழிவு. 8. Insignificance, paltriness, frivolousness, எளிமை. 9. Fineness, minuteness, delicateness, slenderness, நொய்மை. 1. Low parentage, obscurity of birth, இழிபிறப்பு. (c.) சிறுமைபட, inf. To be poor, to be in adversity or in depressed circumstances. 2. To be a mean, degraded, beggarly object--oppo. to பெருமை. 3. To be oppressed. சிறுமைபடுத்த, inf. To impoverish; to debase, degrade. சிறுமையர், s. The low, the base, கீழ் மக்கள். (p.) சிறுமையிற்கல்விசிலையிலெழுத்து. Learning in youth is as durable as engraving in stone. என்சிறுமைசொல்லிமுடியாது. My poverty is inexpressible. சிறுமையிலடிபட்டவன். One tossed about by poverty, &c. சிறுமையும் பெருமையுமவனவன் செய்வினையால் வரும். cilā (p. 186) s. A stone, a rock, கல். Sa. Sila.--Note. The word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation in the compounds. The Tamil word from this is சிலை, which see. சிலாசாதனம், s. An engraving on stone. See சாதனம். சிலாதலம், s. A stony surface, பாறை. 2. Stone seats, கல்பரப்பியவிடம். சிலாநதி, s. Name of a river, (lit.) a stony river, ஓர்நதி. சிலாவங்கம், s. A kind of stone, or one containing lead, ஈயக்கல். சிலாவட்டம், s. A hone, a grind-stone, சாணைக்கல். (சது.) சிலாவருடம்--சிலாவருஷம், s. Showers, or tempests of stones, கன்மழை. 2. One of the seven-fold classes of clouds to be employed for the destruction of the universe, at the general delugé. See முகில். சிலாவிக்கிரகம், s. A stone-idol. 34)

mẕungku (p. 346) கிறேன், மழுங்கினேன், வேன், மழுங்க, v. n. To be blunt, or dull--as an edge or point, முனைமழுங்க. 2. To be obscured, be deprived of lustre or glory, காந்தி குறைய. 3. To become dull in feeling, to lose keenness of intellect, புத்திகுறைய. 4. To fade--as a color, the brightness of a jewel, or the glory of a state, ஒளிமங்க. 5. To be dim or obscure--as the sun or moon in an eclipse or behind a cloud, பிரபைமங்க. 6. To pass by without strict examination, inquiry or notice, மறைந்துபோக. (c.) அவன்மழுங்கச்சிரைத்துப்போட்டான். He shaved off all the hair from the head and face. மழுங்கன், s. A plain jewel without any engraving. மழுங்கல், v. noun. Any thing which is blunt, dim, or unpolished. 2. A loggerhead. 3.
