amai (p. 20) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To yield, come to a right state, submit, comply, obey, acquiesce, சம்மதிக்க. 2. To become settled, peaceable, quiet; to subside, படிய. 3. To be at one's disposal, as a thing that may be effected, acquired, brought to good order, &c., வசமாக. 4. To fit, suit, join nicely, be adapted to, இசைய. 5. To be destined, be subject to a divine appointment or destiny, good or bad, விதிக்குட்பட. 6. To be made, formed, adjusted, திருந்த. 7. To be satisfied, contented, composed, comfortable, resigned, திருத்தியாக. 8. (in the third person only) To be enough, sufficient, போ துமாக. 9. To happen, occur, come to pass, சம்பவிக்க. 1. Most of the meanings of this word have reference to the mind. சாஸ்திரத்திற்கமைந்துநடக்கிறவன், He is one who obeyed the shasters. ஐம்புலனமைந்தவன், s. One who has suppressed the five senses, or to whom the senses are subject. இது என்விசாரணைக்கமைந்த காரியம். It is a matter at my disposal. என்விருப்பத்திற்கமைந்தபடிநடந்தது. It has occurred to my satisfaction. சுகதுக்கம் ஊழின்படி அமையும். Good and evil are appointed according to former character. செயுநீர்மைசெய்யாதமைகலாவாறு. Owing to dissatisfaction at inability to do charity. (குறள். 22. அதி.) அமையவுண்மின். Eat enough. இரட்சிப்பு இறைவனுக்கமைந்தது. Salvation is of God. அமையாமை, neg. v. noun. Unsubmission, insubordination, disquietness, unfitness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அமைவு, v. noun. Subjection, subordination, acquiescence, பொருந்துகை. 2. iṉi (p. 57) adv. Now, immediately, presently, இப்பொழுது. 2. Henceforth, hereafter, பின்பு. 3. A particle of place, from this limit, onward, இப்பால். (நன்னூல்.) இனிக்கள்ளமில்லை. There is no more injurious, offensive matter, &c., no longer any alloy, spuriousness, &c. இனிக்காரியமில்லை. There is no further business. There is no more hope for him--said of a dying man, &c. இனிநம்மெல்லை. We are now close on our limit; we approach our boundary. இனிப்பிழைக்கிறதா? Can he possibly survive? (he will certainly die). இனிப்பேசு. Now you may speak, there is no longer any restraint. இனிப்போதும். Now there is enough. இனிமேல். Hereafter, at some future time. இனியார்? Who else? இனியாற்றாது. I am unable to proceed further (I am altogether exhausted). இனியெங்கேபோவாய்? Whither will you go next? What further resource is left you? இனியென்னசெய்வாய்? What can you do further? இனிவேண்டாம். It is needed no longer, or no more is required. பண்டறியேன்கூற்றென்பதனையினியறிந்தேன்.... Formerly I knew not, but now I know who Yama is. (குறள்.) 46)

eṭṭu (p. 73) கிறேன், எட்டினேன், வேன், எட்ட, v. a. To stretch forth, to reach after, தாவ. 2. [with the dative.] To be obtained, be got, to be caught, அகப்பட. எட்டாதபூதேவனுக்கு. The flower that is out of reach is dedicated to God. [prov.] மனோவாக்குக்கெட்டாதது. What is incomprehensible or unutterable. கைக்கெட்டினதுவாய்க்கெட்டாமற்போயிற்று. The mouth did not get what the hand had reached--I almost got it, but it escaped my grasp. The fates were against me, &c. --spoken in cases of disappointment, &c. கண்ணுக்கெட்டினமட்டும். As far as the eye can see. எனக்கெட்டாது. I cannot reach it. 2. I cannot get it. 2. I cannot comprehend it. கிணற்றுக்கிந்தக்கயிறெட்டாது. This rope is not long enough for the well. எட்ட, inf. [used adverbially.] Far, far off, further, away, aloof, தூரமாக. எட்டநட. Step on, step out. எட்டப்போ--எட்டிப்போ. Go further. எட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To keep away, தூரமாக. மழையெட்டக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The rain has kept off a long time. எட்டவிட, inf. To communicate, inform. அவனுக்கிந்தச்சொல்லையெட்டவிடு. Communicate this news to him. எட்டாக்கை, s. A very distant place, not near enough to be serviceable. எட்டாதபொருள், s. Things incomprehensible--as the Divine being, mysteries, &c. எட்டுமட்டும்பார்க்க, inf. The act of rejecting. கழிப்பு, v. noun. Expulsion, rejection, emission, கழிக்கை. 2. Offering to planets, demons, &c., to remove their malignity, சாந்திகழிக்கை. 3. Blemish, defect, fault, குற்றம். 4. That which is refused, rejected. 5. [in arithmetic.] Subtraction, கழிப்புக்கணக்கு. கழிப்புக்கழிக்க, inf. To expel malign influence by offerings. This is done by waving boiled rice, cakes, &c., over the head of the patients after which the materials used are thrown away. 70)

kẕutai (p. 98) s. An ass, கத்தபம். 2. (c.) A dolt, மூடன். 3. (p.) The sign of the sixth guardian of the eight angles or points of the world. வடமேற்றிசைப்பாலன்குறி. கழுதைப்புண்ணுக்குப்புழுதிமருந்து. Dust is the medicine for an ass's wounds; i. e. for the poor any thing serves for medicine. கழுதையுங்குதிரையும்பிணைந்தாற்போலே. Illmatched--as an ass and horse. கழுதைக்கரணம், s. [in astrology.] One of the eleven தைதுலாகரணம். கழுதைக்குடத்தி--கழுதைப்புலி, s. A hyena, புலிக்குடத்தி. கழுதைக்குட்டி--கழுதைமறி, s. A young ass. கழுதைநிறம், s. Grey, the color of an ass. கழுதைக்குணம்--கழுதையாட்டம், Stupidity. கழுதைத்திசை, s. [in astrology.] The north-west quarter, வடமேற்றிசை. கழுதைமயிர்பிடுங்கியூர், s. A country where they pluck off the hair of the ass; i. e. doing as others do without reason. கழுதைவாகனி, s. The goddess of ill-luck, மூதேவி. கழுதைவிட்டை, s. Ass's dung. கழுதைவிட்டையாயினுங்கைநிறையவிருந்தாற்போ தும். If the hand is full though with nothing but ass's dung. It is enough; i. e. get a great quantity. கோவேறுகழுதை, s. Mule. 79)

kāṇ (p. 103) கிறேன், கண்டேன், பேன், காண, v. a. To see, perceive, behold, view, descry, பார்க்க. 2. To gain sight of a deity, or a great person, the new moon. &c., மங் கலமாகக்காண. 3. To find, meet with, ascertain, gain the knowledge of, be aware of, recognize, தெரிய. 4. To experience, know, feel, உணர. 5. To discover, invent, originate, கண்டறிய. 6. What the first author made is original. காணத்தோன்றஇடுதல்--காணத்தோன்றக்கொண் டுபோதல். Giving and taking in sufficient quantity. காணுங்காணாதாகக்கொடுத்தார். He gave hardly enough. The gerund corresponds with the word 'seeing,' அவர்குருவாயிருப்பதைக்கண்டு அ வர்சொற் கேட்கவேண்டும். Seeing he is a Guru, we must pay deference to his words. காண்டோழி. Hear, my female friend-spoken by a lady. அதுசெலவுக்குக்காணும். That will be sufficient for the expense. சோற்றைக்காணக்காண அவனுக்குத்திமிரெடுக்கின்ற து. To be lost. காணாமற்றிருடினவன், appel. n. One who has taken a thing slyly, clandestinely. காணாமை, s. Invisibility. காணார், appel. n. Enemies--those who will not bow, பகைவர். செய்கைகாண, inf. To be newly cultivated, or cultivated anew, as land. உண்மையைக்காண, inf. To discover, perceive, or understand the truth, especially divine truth. ஈரங்காண, inf. To become moist --as a floor, land, &c. ஈரங்கண்டால்முளைக்கும். If it feel the moisture, the seed will sprout. ஈரங்கண்டாற்கால்வைக்கக்கூடாது. If the ground becomes wet, one cannot walk well. காணும், (the future of காண் in the third pers. neuter.) This form, in colloquial use, is equivalent to sir. 2. In poetry, it is often expletive. போங்காணும். Go, sir. தரியாதுகாணுந்தனம். Wealth is unstable. (நல்வழி.) அப்படியல்லகாணும். Henceforth, he will be good-for-nothing. இதுகாரியத்துக்குக்கூடும். This will serve the purpose. நடுவழியிலேகூடினான். He met me in the middle of the road. கூடிப்பிரியேல். Break not (old) friendships. (Av.) அமாவாசைகூடிவிட்டது. [prov.] The time of new moon has already come. ஆளோடேகூடிவிட்டான். He has begun to come into society (from obscurity or boyhood). 2. He is convalescent; he is getting around. ஆகக்கூடியதொகை. The total amount. கூடிக்கொள்ள, inf. To band together; to form an association, to take part in, to side with. 2. To meet together, to assemble. 3. To exceed, surpass. 4. To gain strength and vigor. கூடிவர, inf. To accompany. 2. To prosper, succeed. கூடிநாடித்திரிய, inf. To associate or consort with one, to be on terms of close friendship. கூடாநட்பு, s. False friendship. கூடாவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A simile in which the comparison is made with a thing having only a hypothetical existence, ஓர்உவமையலங்காரம். கூடாவொழுக்கம், s. Immoral conduct --as of anchorets who in secret break their vows. கூடல், v. noun. Approaching, assembling, &c.; seeking, uniting, cohabiting, being possible, &c.--as the verb கூடு. See also கூடல். s. கூடாமை, neg. [v. noun.] Impropriety, indecorum, பொருந்தாமை. 2. Inability, impossibility, impracticability. கூட்டரவு, v. noun. Collection, aggregate, series, பொருட்கூட்டம். 2. He is not afraid even of his guru. அவன்வீட்டிலேதண்ணீர்கூடக்குடியார்கள்.... They will not drink even water in his house--said in disparagement. நான்கூடஅறியேன். I also know it. அவனுக்குக்கூடக்கொடுத்துப்போட்டீர். You have given him too much. ஐந்துரூபாய்கூடத்தந்தார். He gave five rupees in addition. என்கூடவா. Come with me. கூடிய--கூடின, rel. part. Practicable, possible, convenient, proper, &c. என்னாற்கூடியபணிவிடைக்குக்காத்திருக்கிறேன். I am ready to do any service in my power. கூடியமட்டும்--கூடியமாத்திரம். As far or as much as possible; as much as one is able; to the utmost. கூடும். It is possible, proper, fit, practicable, lawful, &c. கூடாது. It is impossible, impracticable, inconvenient, improper, unlawful, unfit, &c. 2. Note to be done--either as command or an entreaty--according to the manner and tone of the speaker. கால்கைகூடாது. My hands and feet are worn out; i. e. with hard work. என்னாற்கூடாது. I cannot; I will not. கூடாதகாரியம். An impossible thing. கூடலர்--கூடார், s. Enemies, foes, aliens, பகைவர். 26)

koṟi (p. 147) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To work or force off the husks from grains of rice with the fore-teeth--as persons, or with the beak--as birds; to bite or nibble grain, &c., பல்முதலியவற்றாற் கொறிக்க. 2. (fig.) To pick, eat but little; to piddle, கொஞ்சங்கொஞ்சமாயுண்ண. 3. [prov.] To make a ticking, clucking sound, கட்டுவிட்டொலிக்க. 4. To chirp--as a lizard, &c., பல்லிமுதலிய கொறிக்க. கொறிநெற்பதமாயிற்று. The paddy is grown so ripe that the husk can be easily forced off. அவன் என் தலையைக் கொறிக்கப்பார்க்கிறான். He attempts to nibble my head, i. e. to injure me. ஏன்சும்மாகொறிக்கிறாய்? [prov.] Why do you chatter in vain? கொறித்துப்பார்த்தல், v. noun. Trying rice that has been for husking, by biting, to ascertain whether it is dry enough. 2. kol (p. 146) --கொல்லு, கிறேன், கொன்றேன், வேன், கொல்ல, v. a. To take life, kill, slay, murder, கொலைசெய்ய. 2. To deprive mercury of its metallic properties by oxidation; to kill mercury, &c., இரசமுதலிய வற்றைக்கொல்ல. (c.) 3. (fig.) To vex, tease; to molest by continual importunity, அலட்ட. அரசனன்றுகொல்லுந்தெய்வம்நின்றுகொல்லும். The king is swift in executing judgment, but God waits. பார்க்கும்பார்வைஆsைக்கொன்றுபோடும். [prov.] His stern looks are enough to kill one. தன்னைக்கொல்லவரும்பசுவையுங்கொல்லவேண்டும். Even a cow that attacks one may be killed, i. e., we may destroy life in selfdefence. கொல்லத்தக்கசினம். Mortal wrath. கொல்லாமற்கொல்ல, inf. To speak sarcastically, to put one to shame by sarcasm. 2. To do one a great injury, to ruin one. 3. To compass one's death indirectly. 4. To touch the heart, by returning good for evil. கொல்லாமை, v. noun. [neg.] Abstinence from killing, one of the virtues. கொல்லாவிரதம், s. Vows to abstain from killing--as made by Jainas, Saivas, &c. கொல்லாவேதம், s. The sacred books or religion of the Jainas, அருகர்வேதம். கொல்லாவேதன், s. cīvaṉ (p. 191) s. Life, vitality, the vital principle, உயிர். 2. The sentient soul; according to the Vedantic system, the emanation of the deity incorporated with the body, giving it life, motion and sensation; hence also called, சீவாத்துமா. It is opposed to the abstract state of the soul, or as identified with deity, பரமாத்துமா.--Note. According to the Agamas, the soul is eternal, but destined to obsorption in the deity, which is the ultimate object in view in furnishing it with bodies, and with various means for its illumination. 3. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s.
