eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. He will not let me begin; spoken figuratively in allusion to the discharge of arrows. எடுப்பாரும் பிடிப்பாருமுண்டானாலிளைப்புந்தவிப்பும் மெத்தத்தோன்றும். Where there are many attendants much trouble is experienced. பிள்ளைக்குமூக்கெடுக்க. To raise or force out the upper part of the nose of an infant--as a nurse by pressing with two fingers. அரசனாலயமெடுத்தான். The king has built a temple. இந்தப்பாரமெடுக்கமாட்டேன். I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A docile, tractable, yielding person; one who has no opinion of his own. எடுத்துக்கட்ட, inf. To fabricate, invent. எடுத்துக்கட்டு, v. noun. Fabrication, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. Invention--as of a word. எடுத்துக்காட்டல், v. noun. An author's adducing examples, illustrations, &c. (See உத்தி.) 2. Citing, quoting, &c. எடுத்துக்காட்டு, s. An example, illustration, உதாரணம். எடுத்துக்கைநீட்ட, inf. To help one--as a waiter, or attendant. எடுத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To take to one's self, தனக்காகக்கொள்ள. 2. To be overcome in argument--as a party in controversy, &c., to be confuted, தோற்றுப்போக. அவள்பேச்சினாலயலெல்லாமெடுபடுகின்றது... The whole neighborhood is raised by her clamor. எடுபட்டவள், s. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To enter upon an occupation. 2. To suspend one from office. பூவெடுக்க, inf. To gather flowers. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To dig a well. 2. [prov.] To select a spot for a well in reference to the situation of the house and other surrounding objects that ill luck may not result, as also to the nature of a soil or the depth at which water may be found, judged of by the produce of the land, &c. வயிறெடுக்க--வயிறுகடுப்பெடுக்க, inf. To have a looseness. தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language from other authors. See உத்தி. எடுப்பு, v. noun. He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. ettu (p. 73) கிறேன், எத்தினேன், வேன், எத்த, v. a. To inveigle, cheat, seduce, entrap, defraud, entangle by specious appearances, வஞ்சிக்க. 2. To coax, wheedle a child, &c., இதஞ்சொல்ல. என்னையெத்தியதைவாங்கிக்கொண்டான். Having deceived me, he obtained the thing. எத்தப்பார்க்க, inf. To intend deceiving. எத்திப்பறிக்க, inf. oṭu (p. 81) . A poetic form of the third case or social ablative, sometimes also used as an instrumental-meaning with, or by, மூன்றாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. 2. A poetic expletive, ஓரிடைச்சொல். போதொடுபொதுள. The flowers being close. ஊசியொடுகுயின்றதூ சும்பட்டும். Cotton and silk sewed with a needle. கொடியொடுதுவக்குண்டான். He became entangled in a creeper. அவனொடுவந்தான். He came with him. 47)

oṭṭu (p. 81) s. Patch, a piece stuck or fastened on, whether of cloth, board, or metals, இணைக்கப்பட்டது. 2. Birdlime or a noose connected with it, to ensnare birds, a snare, gin, &c., புட்படுக்குங்கண்ணி. 3. A small earring, sticking close to the ear, also called ஒட்டுக்கடுக்கன். 4. A narrow outer verandah, ஒட்டுத்திண்ணை. 5. The divisions of an army, battle array, படைவ குப்பு. 6. A favorable opportunity for securing some advantage in an affair, நற்சம யம். 7. Wager, stake, agreement, vow, சபதம். 8. Rivalry, emulation, இகலாட்டம். 9. Allegory--as when it is said the axletree of a cart will break though loaded with peacock's feathers, if the quantity be sufficiently great; i. e. a great hero will be subdued by weaker persons if the number be great, ஓரலங்காரம். 1. Success, வாய்ப்பு. 11. [prov.] Stubble, தாளடி. ஒட்டிலேபட்டசிறுபட்சிபோலாகவேயுழல்கின்ற பேதைமனமே. Oh! my inconsiderate mind struggling for relief as a little bird entangled in a net. (சச்சி.) ஒட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To peep, to watch, to pry (hiding behind something), ஒளித்திருந்துபார்க்க. 2. To watch an opportunity, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டிட்டுக்கொள்ள, inf. To lay a wager, to lay down stakes, to make trial by. ஒட்டுக்கடுக்கன், s. A peculiar kind of earring worn alike by both sexes in some parts of the country, சிறு கடுக்கன். ஒட்டுச்செடி, s. A kind of amaranth whose seeds stick to the clothes, ஓர்செடி. ஒட்டுத்திண்ணை, s. A kind of step used for sitting on at the margin of the verandah running the whole length, seats running cross-wise at the ends of the verandah, சிறுதிண்ணை. ஓரொட்டு, adv. Altogether, by the lump. 2. ktuvu (p. 91) கிறது, கதுவினது, ம், கதுவ, v. n. To mix or come in contact with, to be disturbed, கலங்க. 2. v. a. To seize, catch, entangle, grasp, lay hold of without ceasing, நீங்காதுபற்ற. (p.) 3. [prov.] To take more than a proper share, to encroach upon, to over-reach, அதிகமாகப்பற்ற. 4. kaṉmam (p. 102) s. Moral actions, especially in their effects--as the cause of transmigrations and their accompanying joys and sorrows, pleasure and pains, intelligence or stupidity, &c., சஞ்சிதகன்மம். 2. Actions, செய்தொழில். 3. Evil actions, evil, vice, தீவினை. (See கருமம்.) 4. Fate, destiny, the fruits, retributions, &c., of actions in former births, பிராரத்தகன்மம். Wils. p. 198. KARMMAN. In the Agamas, actions and their effects are of three classes, viz: 1. ஆகாமியம், moral actions, good and evil of the present life, considered as the source of future births with their suffering and enjoyment. 2. சஞ்சிதம், the accumulated actions of the soul in former births, the retributions of which are to be experienced in future transmigrations. 3. பிராரத்தம் or பிராரத்துவம், the enjoyment and sufferings apportioned to the soul in the present state --as the retributions of actions in former births. அவனைக்கொல்லாதேகன்மம்பிடிக்கும். Do not kill him, if you do, the action will seize you. கன்மங்கட்டுப்பட, inf. See கருமங் கட்டுப்பட. கன்மகாண்டம், s. A medical book treating of diseases, as caused by the sins of former births, and the means necessary to remove them, so that medicines may prove effectual, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். கன்மசண்டாளன், s. See கரும சண்டாளன். கன்மசாந்தி, s. A ceremony for the expiation of the evil of former deeds, கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மஞ்செய்தகுடி, s. A family guilty of wicked actions in former births, now made manifest by their sufferings. கன்மத்தியாகம், s. Expiation of the evil of a former birth. கன்மத்துரோகி, s. A wicked wretch, a criminal, சண்டாளன். கன்மநிவர்த்தி--கன்மநிவாரணம், s. See கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மந்தொலைய, inf. To become extinct, to be worked or eaten out and terminated--as former evil deeds. கன்மபந்தம், s. [as கருமபந்தம்.] The bond or connexion between the sins of former births and their subsequent punishment. கன்மபரிபாகம், s. Ripening, or expiration of the accumulated merit of the actions of former births, கன்மவொழிவு. கன்மபாதகம், s. A heinous crime. கன்மபாதகன், s. One guilty of some heinous crime, கொடியபாதகன். கன்மபூமி, s. The earth as the theatre of moral actions, or place where virtue and vice are practised, and their respective merit and demerit accumulated, பூலோகம். கன்மம்பிடிக்க, inf. To attend, follow, or pursue--as the guilt of crimes personified. கன்மம்புசிக்க, inf. To experience the good or evil of former actions. கன்மவலை, s. The net of moral actions, கன்மபாசம், i. e. the entanglements of births, or actions and their result, in subsequent transmigrations. கன்மவாதனை, s. See கருமவேதனை. கன்மரோகம்--கன்மவியாதி, s. See கருமவியாதி. கன்மவுடம்பு, s. Bodies assumed, as a result of former deeds, கன்மசரீரம். கன்மாதி, s. Funeral rites, &c., for deceased ancestors, கர்மாதி. கன்மி, s. A heinous sinner, a perpetrator of crimes, கருமி. கன்மேந்திரியம், s. The five organs of action, தொழிற்கருவி. See இந்திரியம். 68)

kẕṟṟu (p. 98) கிறேன், கழற்றினேன், வேன், கழற்ற, v. a. To unloose, unfasten, loosen, unhang, unhinge, unlock, unhook, unbolt, unrivet, uncrew, unbutton, unfetter, &c., கழலச்செய்ய. 2. To strip, take off (clothes, jewels, &c.). unclothe, divest, put off the shoes, hat, head-dress, &c; to dismantle, unrig, ஆடைமுதலியனகழற்ற. 3. kẕl (p. 98) --கழலு, கிறது, கழன்றது, கழ லும், கழல, v. n. To become loose--as a fastening, a nail, a shoe, a handle, a lock, a leaf, hair, knot, a part of any mechanism; to be unhinged, to slip off, slough off-as a snake's skin; to become extricated, disentangled, நெகிழ்ந்துபோக. 2. To be put out of joint, be dislocated, பொருத்துவிலது (c.) எண்ணெய்மயிரைவிட்டுக்கழன்றது. The oil has come off the hair. தலைச்சாத்துக்கழன்றது. The head-dress is untied. நின்றவன்மெல்லக்கழன்றுவிட்டான். kiruttiyam (p. 111) s. Act, actions, performances, operation, தொழில். 2. Moral actions good or bad, involving future retributions, கன்மக்கிரியை. 3. A course of conduct, நடக்கை. 4. Work, business, employment, லௌகிகவேலை. 5. Religious rules, prescribed duties, கடமை. 6. Rites, ceremonies, &c., religious acts or practice, சடங்கு. 7. The operations of the deity--popularity in the characters of creator, preserver and destroyer; but in the mystic parts of the Agama system, the works of obscuring and enlightening the soul are superadded. Wils. p. 243. KRUTYA. தன்கிருத்தியந்தான்பார்க்கவேண்டும். Each one must perform his appropriate duties, personal, social, relative, civil, &c. கிருத்தியகர்த்தா, s. An operating deity, or a god who performs either of the five great operations in the universe. கிருத்தியகர்த்தாக்கள், s. (pl.) Agents who carry on operations in the universe; also, those of the விஞ்ஞானகலர் and பிர ளயாகலர் class of souls that have advanced so as to be cleansed from மலம், and permitted to be operative. கிருத்தியப்பிழை, s. Misdeeds, misbehaviour. 2. Failure or transgression in the performance of prescribed rites, ceremonies or other duties. கிருத்தியமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not practise the rites of the religion. ஒருகிருத்தியமுமில்லாதவன். One unemployed. கிருத்தியமுடிக்க, inf. To perform prescribed duties--as religious rites, ceremonies, &c. கிருத்தியம்பண்ண--கிருத்தியம்நடத்த inf. To perform the works of creation, &c..--as a deity, ஐந்தொழில்செய்ய. The direct object of this work is fancied to be; 1. To cleanse the soul from its moral defilements. 2. To cause it to experience the fruit of former actions. 3. To give it a temporary rest. 4. To produce an equilibrium between the good and evil actions of the soul. 5. To emancipate it from the பாசம் entanglements. (சிவ. சி.) 2. To perform works, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 3. To perform the duties of one's calling, தொழில்செய்ய. 4. To perform the funeral rites for a deceased ancestor, உத்தரகிரியைசெய்ய. பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations of deity under various names, forms and modifications, viz.: 1st. சிருட்டி or படை த்தல், the work of creating or transforming matter, evolving it from the primitive Maya, producing words, furnishing the soul with its appropriate body, according to its actions in a previous birth, &c. In the popular system, this office is ascribed to Brahma. 2d.திதி or காத்தல், the work of preserving, usually ascribed to Vishnu. 3d. சங்காரம் or அழித்தல், the work of destroying, or of reducing the universe to the primitive Maya, through numerous involutions, --as earth into water, water into fire, &c. This office is ascribed to உருத்தி ரன், who by his worshippers is identified with Siva whom they consider supreme. 4th. திரோபவம் or மறைத்தல், the work of obscuration, or the veiling of the soul in moral darkness, and beclouding the understanding, so that the divine being cannot be perceived, while the mind attracted and illuded by visible and sensual objects, is excited to the performance of new actions, by which absolute liberation from பாசம் entanglements is prevented, and connection with Maya and its consequent transmigrations--except where the sanchita (சஞ்சிதம்) of former births is exhausted --is indefinitely prolonged. This is ascribed to மயேச்சுரன். 5th. அனுக்கிரகம் or அருளல், this is a work of benevolence as exerted for the benefit of the soul in furnishing it with appropriate bodies by which to expiate the guilt of former actions, though obscuring it with திரோ பவம், while it is thus working itself clear, at length withdrawing the veil and showing it that all visible and sensual objects are illusory and deceptive; also annihilating the passions and exciting disgust toward the objects of sense, and utter indifference to all mundane affairs, and thus causing entire cessation from physical and moral actions, and maturing it for final emancipation, and union with the Supreme. It is ascribed to சதாசிவம். சமுசாரகிருத்தியம், s. Domestic affairs, household business. 10) *

kutr (p. 119) கிறது, ந்தது, குதரும், குதர, v. a. To separate, to adjust, to disentangle--as the birds their feathers, பிரித்துக்கோத. (p.) குதர், s. Separation, பிரிவு. குதர்செய்ய, inf. To lay open, to tear open; to separate, dishevel, scatter. குதர்செல்ல, inf. To deviate, to miss the way. (இனியநாற்பது.) 20) *

kuḷṟu (p. 130) கிறேன், குளறினேன், வேன், குள ற, v. n. To stammet, through anger, confusion of mind, &c., உளற. 2. To howl, to yell, to make a hideous--as jackals, &c., நரிபேய்முதலியனகுளற. கன்னாபின்னாவென்று குளறுகிறான். He speaks nonsence. குளறுவாயன், s. A stammerer. குளறுகை, v. noun. Stammering. குளறிப்போக, inf. To jar--as a voice in singing, or to cry out for pain. குளறிப்போட, inf. To entangle, to bring to confusion. குளறியடிக்க, inf. [prov.] To roar and beat the breasts through grief. குளறியடித்துக்கிடக்க, inf. To lie in a great confusion. குளறுபடி, s. Confusion in business. குளறுபடியாய்க்கிடக்கிறது, It remains unsettled, irregular. 11)

koḷuvu (p. 147) கிறேன்,கொளுவினேன், வேன், கொளுவ, [vul.] v.a. To hook, clasp, buckle, latch on a nail, to hook on; to grapple, பூட்ட. 2. To entangle and ensnare, to take in, to entrap, inveigle, அகப்படுத்த. 3. To take into partnership, கூட்டுச்சேர்க்க. 4. To contrive,. to manage by artifice, contrivance or scheming, தந்திரஞ்செய்ய. 5. [prov.] To put on shoes, sandals, &c., செ ருப்புமுதலியதொடுக்க. 6. v. n. To be engaged --as in an employment; to be ensnared or entrapped, &c., கொளுவுண்ண. 7. To make an impression--as on the mind, பற்ற. 8. [prov. impersonal.] to have cramp, stitches, &c., in the bowels or side, &c., குடல்தூக்கிக்கொள்ள. அந்தவேலையிலே கொளுவினபின்பு. Since he was engaged in the business. கொளுவிக்கொள்ள, inf. To hook, to engage, to entangle. சங்கிலிகொளுவிக்கொண்டது. The chain has become entangled. கொளுவிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To entangle, catch, to ensnare a man--as a lewd woman. w. (Rott.) To prosecute a law suit. 3. To hook in, &c. கொளுவியிழுக்க, inf. To challenge one, or provoke one to a quarrel. 2. To bring one into trouble, difficulty, &c. கொளுவிவிட, inf. To fasten on earrings, &c. 2. To engage one in trade, an office, &c. 3. To marry a woman to one in low life. 4. To set people quarrelling. கொளுவிவைக்க, inf. To adjoin. (R.) கொளுவுகயிறு, s. [prov.] The loop of the string in an ola book, by loosening which the leaves may be taken apart. சண்டைகொளுவ, inf. To pick a quarrel. வேலிகொளுவ, inf. [loc.] To hedge; to enclose with a fence of wood. 12)
