akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. ari (p. 23) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To itch acutely as in a cutaneous disease, or from the bite of vermin; to irritate, as a cough, தினவுபிடிக்க. சிரங்கரிக்கிறது. The itch itches. அரிகரப்பன், s. An eruption attended with itching, ஓர்கரப்பன். 47)

aẕuku (p. 32) கிறது, அழுகினது, ம், அழுக, v. n. To rot, putrify, decay, corrupt, பத னழிய. 2. To be raw as sores, ulcers, &c. புண்ணழுக. அழுகல், s. Rotten fruit, &c., anything rotten or putrified, அழுகினது. அழுகிக்கெட்டுப்போதல், v. noun. Decaying gradually. அழுகுசப்பாணி, s. A sore on the hands or feet--supposed to be from the lick of a poisonous reptile--causing the flesh to putrify and drop off by little and little, ஓர்விடநோய். 2. The poisonous reptile causing the sore, அழுகு சர்ப்பம். அழுகுசர்ப்பம், s. The name of a reptile whose lick is supposed to be poisonous, ஓர்விஷசெந்து. அழுகுணி, s. A kind of eruption, chiefly about the ears, ஓர்கரப்பன். 13)

avi (p. 30) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To become sodden, boiled, cooked by boiling or by steam, as rice or other substances in liquid, வேக. 2. To become extinguished as a light, the sight of the eye, &c., become extinct or suppressed (as the senses of an ascetic by austerities,) தணிய. 3. To perish, become ruined or destroyed, அழிய. 4. [impersonally.] To feel hot attended with perspiration, to swelter, புழுங்க. 5. To heat as moist straw, fruit, &c. heaped up, to ferment as vegetable matter, வெதும்ப. 6. To become salivated; heated, corroded, sore, &c., as the mouth or skin with lime or other caustics, or the flesh by a tight bandage, வாய்வேக. 7. To be in the state of raw sores, small blisters, eruptions, &c., as found in some cutaneous diseases, புண்ண விய. 8. To be hot, close, confined, as in a crowded room by the exclusion of air, &c., உஷ்ணமாக. 9. To be afflicted, வருந்த. (c.) அவிந்ததானியம், s. Spoiled, damaged grain. அவியாதநெருப்பு, s. Inextinguishable fire. அவியல், v. noun. Boiled food, அவி ந்தது. 2. A kind of curry without acid, ஓர்கறி. 3. Heat of the body with perspiration in sultry weather, sweltering, புழுக்கம். 4. Fermentation, heating of vegetable matter, of grain, &c., வெப்பம். 5. Soreness of the mouth occasioned by heat in the system--chiefly found in children--canker, salivation, &c., வாய்ப் புண். 6. Heat from a crowd of people, உட்டணம். (c.) அவியல்மணம், s. The offensive smell of fermenting vegetable matter, &c அவியற்கறி, s. Boiled meat. அவியற்காய், s. Boiled fruit, fruits fermented, spoiled, &c. அவியற்பல், s. Soiled teeth. 19)

āṇi (p. 38) s. Excellence, principal or transcendent qualities, மேன்மை. 2. (c.) A kind of corn on the feet, supposed to be caused by the prick of a thorn, &c., காலி லுண்டாகுமணி. 3. A kind of block set into the mortar, when that is worn too low, உரலாணி. ஆணிக்குருத்து, s. The heart, or prime part of a palmyra shoot. ஆணிச்சிதல், s. [vul.] The core of a suppuration. ஆணித்தங்கம்--ஆணிப்பொன், s. The best kind of gold. ஆணித்தரம், s. First quality, மு தற்றரம். 2. [in pearls.] Superior pearl, நல்லமுத்து. 3. (fig.) Firmness, உறுதி. ஆணித்தரமானவன், s. An excellent man, one of first rate accomplishments. ஆணிப்பூ, s. A disease of the eye --a kind of cataract. ஆணிமுத்து, s. A very superior pearl. ஆணிவேர், s. The principal root of a tree, as உச்சிவேர். மார்பாணி, s. A kind of venereal disease, an eruption upon the breast. குதியாணி, s. A corn in the heel. காலாணி, s. iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. [in rhetoric.] An indirect answer--as when one is asked if he has areca nut, he answers that he has betel, meaning that he has no areca. These modes of answering are of five kinds, விடைப்பொ ருளைத்தருவதாய்வருவது. See விடை. இறைபுரிய, inf. To hold the reins of government, அரசாட்சிசெய்ய. 2. To administer justice, நீதிசெலுத்த. இறைப்பிளவை--இறைக்கள்ளன், s. A kind of scirrhus, eruption in the finger joints or between the fingers at the roots, கையிறையில்வருமோர்புண். இறைமகள், s. To become broken--as a vessel; to crack, burst, break in pieces, split, to be fractured--as the skull, &c.; to break with force suddenly, to break or burst open--as a bank or shore; to break open--as a letter or seal, &c.; to be broken--as the skin; to be hurt--as by a wound, தகர. 2. To become broken--as the ranks of an army, to be discomfited, to retreat before the foe, இரிய. 3. To become broken--as the heart with grief, to be disheartened, dispirited, dejected, alienated, &c., to be in despair, மனம்நெகிழ. 4. To fall below in competition, rivalry or comparison, தாழ. 5. ūtu (p. 69) கிறேன், ஊதினேன், வேன், ஊத, v. a. To blow--as with the mouth, to blow the fire, to puff and blow--as with hard labor, வாயாலூத. 2. To blow a musical instrument--as a trumpet, துளைக்கருவியி சைக்க. 3. To blow with a bellows, a blowpipe, &c., துருத்திமுதலியவற்றாலூத. 4. oṭu (p. 81) s. The name of a tree, ஓர் மரம். 2. [as ஒடக்கட்டி.] concealed matter in a boil or imposthume after the surface is healed, an abscess imperfectly healed, the core, புடைகொண்டபுண். ஒடுக்கட்டி, s. A boil under the armpit, ஓர்பரு. ஒடுத்தங்க--ஒடுநிற்க, inf. To remain as concealed, unremoved, insidious matter in a boil, causing a new eruption, பருவிற்சீத்தங்க. ஓடுநின்றாற்பின்புங்கட்டும். If matter remain, new eruptions will form. ஒடுவடக்கி, s. A plant used for curing new ulcerations, caused by matter remaining in a boil-commonly called குப்பைமேனி. 2. A tree, திராய்மரம். ஒடுவெண்ணெய், s. Oil applied to cause absorption of matter in a boil, or to cure new eruptions, ஓர்தைலம். 46)

oṭṭu (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒட்டினேன், வேன், ஒட்ட, v. a. and v. n. To stick on, to stick up, to glue on, cause to cleave or adhere, பொருத்த. 2. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. To stand near a wall, a pillar, &c., in order to over-hear, to way-lay, &c., விசேஷங்கேட்கவொளித்துநிற்க. சுட்டமண்ணும்பச்சைமண்ணுமொட்டாது. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. A small young one of birds, சிறுகுஞ்சு. 2. [prov.] A small white louse, பேன்குஞ்சு. ஒட்டுக்குடி, s. A family or person, lodging or dwelling in another's house, garden, &c. ஒட்டுக்கும், adv. Wholly, entirely, முழுதும். ஒட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. [prop. ஒற்றுக் கேட்க.] To over-hear by listening in a hiding place, &c. ஒட்டுக்கொடுக்க, s. inf. To allow access, to be accessible. 2.
