āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. (p.) ஆற்றுக்காலாட்டியர், s. Agricultural women of low caste, உழத்தியர். (p.) ஆற்றுக்கால், s. A dike, channel for conveying water to the fields, ஆற்று வாய்க்கால். ஆற்றுச்சுழி, s. A whirlpool, vortex, ஆற்றுநீர்ச்சுழி. ஆற்றுச்செருப்படி, s. A small water-plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆற்றுணா, s. Rice tied up for a journey, கட்டுச்சோறு. (p.) ஆற்றுத்தும்மட்டி, s. Colocynth, பேய்க்கொம்மட்டி, Citrullus colocynthis, L. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், s. The natural construction of a sentence. See பொருள்கோள். ஆற்றுநெட்டி, s. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. An immoral man. நல்லாறுடையான், s. A moral person, one whose conduct is agreeable to rule. சிற்றாறு, s. A rivulet, a brook. 66)

urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. Forcible language that cannot be controverted, சொற்றிட்பம். உரைவாசகம், s. Prose composition, discourse, language. பாட்டுமுரையும், s. A poem with commentary. திருவள்ளுவருரை, s. eẕutu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுதினேன், வேன், எழுத, v. a. To write, paint, draw, mark, stain, trace (letters, &c.), inscribe, வரைய. 2. To foreordain, to predestine. This verb is soused from the notion that each one's fate is written by Brahma in the skull, தலையிலெழுத. 3. To write composition, draw up in writing, வசனாதிகளெழுத. 4. To engrave, சித்திரமெழுத. எழுதக்கைதிரும்பவில்லை. The hand is not yet trained. எட்கிடைநெற்கிடைவிட்டெழுத. To write leaving the space of a sesamum seed between the letters, and of a grain of rice between the lines--the order to be observed in writing. எழுதாக்கிளவி--எழுதாமறை, s. The vedas, lit. unwritten works--an appellation adopted with reference to their meaning being handed down by oral explanation and not written, or to the accent, pronunciation, &c., which cannot be written, வேதம். எழுதிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To grant by writing, write and deliver as a voucher. 2. To betroth a girl by written contract. 3. To write for another, draw up a document. 4. To write lessons for a learner. 5. To give a list, inventory, &c. எழுதிக்கொள்ள, inf. To write a letter, petition, &c., to a great person; to write for one's self. 2. To enrol. 3. To write and deliver vouchers reciprocally. எழுதிச்சேர்க்க, inf. To register, file a writing as a notary public. எழுதிவைக்க, inf. To recount,register, write and keep for a memorandum, &c., to write and leave behind for the use of others. எழுதினஉடன்படிக்கை--எழுதின வொப்பாசாரம், s. Written contract. எழுதுகோல், s. A writing reed, எழுதுங்கோல். 2. A painter's brush or pencil, தூரியக்கோல். எழுதுபடம், s. A picture, கிழி. மேற்பாடம்பார்த்தெழுதுதல், v. noun. Copying from a written book. பெயர்த்தெழுத, inf. To copy, to transcribe. குறிப்பெழுத, inf. To note down the time, &c. of the birth of a child. திருத்தமாயெழுத, inf. To write correctly. சரமகவியெழுத, inf. [prov.] To write a stanza, commemorative of the death of an ancestor, or other near relative, mentioning the day, hour, &c. of the moon, as a memorandum for ascertaining the time to perform the annual funeral rites. மறுமொழியெழுத--பதிலெழுத, inf. Royal commands, the order of a king or other ruling power. குருகற்பனை, s. The precept of a Guru regarded as sacred, to be observed with undeviating scrupulosity. தெய்வகற்பனை, s. cā (p. 174) கிறேன், செத்தேன், வேன், சாக, v. n. To die, இறக்க. 2. To perish or be injured --as grain--, &c., கெட. 3. To dry up--as a sore, &c., காய்ந்துபோக. (Sa. Jya.)--Note. சாவ and sometimes சா are used in poetry for சாக. and சாம் for சாகும். அவள்பேரிலேசாகிறான். He is dying (from love) for her. சாவதுபிழைப்பதாயிருக்கிறான். He is dangerously ill. செத்துப்பிழைத்தாயா. Are you just come to life? Spoken of one absent, or inattentive who afterwards asks for an explanation. செத்தவீடு. A funeral-house. கால்கைசெத்துப்போயின. The arms and legs are wearied by walking, &c. சாகக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lose a near relative, to be bereft--used chiefly in expressions of regret, and in lamentations for the dead. சாகக்கொல்ல, inf. To kill, to kill outright. 2. (fig.) To harass, to torment. சாகத்துணிந்தவன், s. One who voluntarily braves death in battle, or by any desperate act. சன்னியாசிகள்பந்தி, s. [R. Catho. usage.] The order of monks. பாலசன்னியாசி, s. One who devotes himself from his youth to ascetic life, lives in celibacy, &c., 2. The pupil of a முனி, muni, முனிசீஷன். 5) *

Thread, yarn, twine, line, cord, பஞ்சிநூல். --Note. Rules in Garmmar or other works are of six kinds: 1. பிண்டச்சூத்திரம், the opening of a subject by giving an abstract of the work. 2. தொகைச்சூத்திரம், a synopsis, the divisions in brief, their number, &c., a general rule. 3. வகைச்சூத்திரம், an analysis with general divisions; particular rules. 4. குறிச்சூத்திரம், definitions, &c., demonstrative rules. 5. செய்கைச்சூத்திரம், directory, as in grammar, for permutation, elision, &c., connective rules. 6. புறனடைச்சூத்திரம், supplementary rules to obviate objections; give reasons, explanations, &c., respective rules. Thess are sometimes reduced to two, குறிச்சூத்திரம் and செய்கைச்சூத்திரம். சாத்திரத்தைச்சுட்டுச் சதுமறையைப் பொய்யாக்கி சூத்திரத்தைக்கண்டுசுகம்பெறுவதெக்காலம். When shall the shastras be burnt, the four Vedas proved false, and I through a knowledge of the mystery, be made happy? சூத்திரக்காரன், s. An ingenious or curious artist, an engineer, சூட்சவேலைக்காரன். 2. A man of fine parts, of quick perception, ready wit, &c., சூட்சபுத்தியுள்ளவன். 3. A man of good tact, management, economy, கெட்டிக்காரன். சூத்திரக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. 2. The strings of a purse, a bag, &c. (Compare சூட்சக்க யிறு.) 3. Any thing that puts a machine in motion. 4. The unseen line or spring of creature action, as moved by the divine hand in every event of life, கடவுளது சூட்சம். சூத்திரதாரி, s. The man who manages the springs, strings. &c., of a puppet, பதிமையாட்டி. 2. God--as moving all things, கடவுள். (p.) சூத்திரநிலை, s. The arrangement of rules in grammar, or other scientific or literary works; being of four kinds: 1. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, rules following each other in a regular order. (See ஆறு.) 2. சிங்க நோக்கு, rules having reference to those preceding and following. (See சிங்கம்.) 3. தவளைப்பாய்த்து, a rule referring to the next but one preceding or succeeding. (See தவளை.) 4. பருந்தின்வீழ்வு, a rule referring to several other rules distant from each other. See பருந்து. சூத்திரப்பா, s. [com. நூற்பா.] A simple, easy kind of metre, a species of அகவல். being of a didactic or prosaic metre, adapted to treatises of instruction. The நன்னூல், திவாகரம், பிங்கலந்தை and other works are written in this style. சூத்திரப்பதிமை--சூத்திரப்பாவை--சூத் திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A puppet moved by springs, strings, &c. 2. Creatures--human especially--as influenced by the Supreme Being in all their actions. சூத்திரப்பதிமையாட்டுகிறவன், appel. n. A puppet player. 2. (fig.) A subordinate who having gained the mind of his superior directs it at his own pleasure. சூத்திரப்புறனடை, s. Note appended to a rule, &c., ina literary or scientific work. சூத்திரப்பெட்டி, s. A box whose lock is a puzzle. சூத்திரமாட்ட, inf. To put the machine in operation. (c.) சூத்திரமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in the form of a rule, a text, a mystery or contrivance. சூத்திரமானகனவு, s. Ingenious theft, artful fraud. சூத்திரர், s. Artificers, mechanics, engineers, architects, carpenters, &c., தச்சர் முதலானோர். 2. See சூத்திரன். சூத்திரம்வைக்க, inf. To contrive plans. சூத்திரவேலை, s. viṉā (p. 398) s. Sagacity, prudence, புத்தி. 2. Attention, ஞாபகம். 3. A question.--oppos. to விடை, கேள்வி. 4. One of the modes of explanation. See உரை. 5. (Beschi.) in computation, where the numbers are of the same kind, and the integers and fractions each one வினா, as 1 is one வினா, 1?? two வினா; 1?? 1/4 that is an integer with two fractions is three வினா. அதெனக்குவினாவில்லை. I don't remember it. அவனுக்குவினாப்போதாது. He has not sufficient discretion. வினாவோடேகேள். Hear with attention. தேவினாமூர்த்தம், s. Interrogation, a query, a problem. வினா, 5., There are according to சது. five special categories, in questioning; 1. அறியான்வினாவல், asking what one does not know; 2. அறிவொப்புக்காண்டல், seeking to learn whether another's knowledge agrees with one's own; 3. ஐயமறுத்தல், clearing up of doubts; 4. அவனறிவுதரன் கோடல், learning what the other knows; 5. மெய்யவற்குக்காட்டல், discovering the truth.--According to Nannul these are அறிவினா, அறயாவினா,ஐயவினா, கொளல்வினா, கொ டுத்தல்வினா, ஏவும்வினா. வினாக்குறிப்பு, s. vētam (p. 402) s. The holy books of the Hindus--said to have been revealed by Brahma, but compiled from tradition by vyasa. They are four in number; 1. இருக்கு, Rig Veda, chiefly relating to ritual worship; 2. எசுர், Yajur Veda, concerning the ceremonies observed in sacrifices; 3. சாமம், Sama Veda, containing odes, hymns and chants; 4. அதர்வ ணம், Atharvan'a, with mantras or magical formulas, the least esteemed of the four. உபவேதம், s. The four secondary sciences. These are அருத்தவேதம், commentary on the Vedas; ஆயுர்வேதம், Physic; காந்தருவவேதம், music; தனுர்வேதம், archery. வேதகலாபம், s. Religious persecution. வேதக்காரர், s. Brahmans skilled in one or more of the Vedas. (R.) 2. [Heathen usage.] Roman Catholics. வேதக்கொடியோன், s. An epithet of Dron'acharya as the Veda-bannered, துரோணாசாரியன். (சது.) வேதசாஸ்திரம், s. Sciences subordinate to the Vedas, of which there are six: 1. மந்திரம், mantras; 2. நிகண்டு, vocabulary; 3. வியாகரணம், grammar; 4. சந்தோபிசிதம், prosody; 5. நிருத்தம், explanation of mystic words; 6. சோதிடம், astronomy, astrology.--According to Wils. சிட்சை and கற்பம், are given for the first two. வேதாந்தம், s. [lit. the end of the Vedas.] A refined system of philosophy taught by Vyasa in the Uttara-mimamsa, and reduced by himself to 5 stanzas. It was commented on by Madevacharya, Sankaracharya, and Ramanujacharya, severally in the Dwaita, Adwaita, and Visishta--adwaita systems. The first and last allow a distinct existence of matter, but not its eternity. The second denies the real existence of matter, and resolves all existence into God.
