One who ruins a family. 2. the ruiner of a family, being one of the number. குடிகேடு, s. Ruin to a family; an unavoidable ruin. குடிகொள்ள, inf. To inhabit, dwell; to take possession of the mind--as a deity or devil; or of a house--as a demon; also--as bats, snakes, &c.; to be seated or eatablished--as a lingering or chronic disease. என்னுளங்குடிகொண்டகுலதெய்வமே. Militia. குடிப்பழுது, s. Stigma on a family, disgrace, disrepute. குடிப்பாங்கு, s. The habits of a cultivator, or an agriculturist. குடிப்பிறப்பு, s. High birth; being born of a distinguished family. குடிப்பெண், s. The lawful wife--as distinguished from a concubine. குடிப்பெயர், s. Family name. 2. [in gram.] Nouns of family names--as in ஊர்கிழான். குடிமகன், s. A feudatory, or a man of the servile tribe in relation to the families (குடி) of superior caste, to which under certain restrictions he is subject. The connexion is commonly hereditary. 2. A barber, அம்பட்டன். குடிமக்கள், s. Servile castes in relation to their feudal chiefs, eighteen in number: 1. வண்ணான், washerman. 2. நாவி தன், barber. 3. குயவன், potter. 4. தட்டான், gold or silver-smith. 5. கன்னான், brazier. 6. கற்றச்சன், mason. 7. கொல்லன், blacksmith. 8. தச்சன், carpenter. 9. எண்ணெ ய்வாணிகன், oil-monger. 1. உப்புவாணிகன், salt-dealer. 11. இலைவாணிகன், betel-seller. 12. பள்ளி. 13. பூமாலைக்காரன், garlandmaker. 14. Grave-digger, commonly a பறையன். 15. கோவிற்குடியான், [prop.] பணி செய்வோன், chank-blower. 16. ஒச்சன், pujari at a temple of பிடாரி. 17. வலையன், fisherman. 18. பாணன், tailor. The special servants in the above are the barber, washerman, black-smith, carpenter and grave-digger. குடிமதிப்பு, s. Assessment, valuation of property for taxation. குடிமார்க்கம்--குடிமுறை, s. Domestic life. 2. Proper conduct as a householder. குடிமிராசி--குடிமிராசு, s. The right or privilege of a hereditary occupant. குடிமிராசிகொடுக்க, inf. To endue with particular மிராசு privileges. குடிமை, s. Customs or manners of the higher classes, மேற்குலத்தார்நடக்கை. 2. Lineage, family, descent. குடிவரலாறு. 3. Vassalage, servitude, feudal dependence, feudal right or cunnexion; a feudatory in reference to his chief. (See குடிமக்கள்.) --Note. The chief is entitled to the service of his feudatory whenever required, and the latter to a proportion of the produce of the land, to perquisites at weddings, funerals, &c. 4. Domestic life, family economy, குடிச்செயல். 5. A king in relation to his subjects, அரசன். (குற.) குடியரசு-குடியாட்சி, s. Democracy, government by the people. குடியிறை, s. Tax, impost--as collected from the subjects, குடிவரி. குடிவாரம், s. Share of produce to the inhabitant or cultivator--as distinguished from மேல்வாரம். குடியழிக்க, inf. v. a. To ruin a family. குடியழிய, inf. v. n. To be buried or ruined--as a family. குடியழிவு, v. noun. Ruin of a family. 2. A great evil, often hyperbolically used. குடியானவன், s. An inhabitant; emphatically a caste man, one not of a low caste. குடியியல்பு, s. Domestic life, family management. 2. Domestic order, domestic rules of management. குடியிருப்பு, s. Living--as a family, or an inhabitant; residing, குடியிருக்கை. 2. An inhabited, settled, or populated place, a village, கிராமம். 3. The parts of a village inhabited by different castes respectively. The name of the caste is commonly prefixed --as செட்டிகுடியிருப்பு, a chitties' village. குடியிறங்க, inf. To settle, tarry or halt --as a family or a tribe. குடியிற்பிறந்தவன், s. One born of a good family. குடியிற்பிறந்து குரங்காட்டமாடுதல். Being born of a good family, and falling into disgrace by bad conduct. குடியிற்பிறந்து செடியில்விழுந்தான். He was born of a good family, but married low; lit. fell into the bush. குடியெழும்ப, inf. To evacuate a house, village, &c., commonly from some unlucky and disastrous event, or anticipation. குடிவாங்க--குடிவாங்கிப்போக, inf. To remove from a place--as a family; to abandon a dwelling. 2. To migrate, to emigrate--as a family. குடியேற, inf. To settle in a new country, to colonize, to people. குடியேற்ற, inf. v. a. To settle people in a country, to stock with inhabitants, to people, to populate. குடிவாழ்க்கை, v. noun. Domestic economy, house-keeping. 2. Regulation of a household. குடிவிளங்கப்பண்ண, inf. To render a family illustrious' and prosperous. குடிவைக்க-குடியிருத்த, inf. To settle or establish a family. 2. To provide a family with the means of sustenance. சிறந்தகுடி, s. A family in prosperous circumstances. சுகவாசிக்குடி, s. A tenant; a renter or cultivator--as distinguished from மூரிக் குடி. See மூரிக்குடி. நல்லகுடி, s. A good or well-ordered family. 2. A well-settled family, a family in prosperous circumstances. நைந்தகுடி, s. An impoverished family. பசுங்குடி, s. Husbandmen. பயிர்க்குடி, s. Husbandmen, tillers. வந்தேறுகுடி, s. A new settler. குடியோட்டி, s. A kind of thistle, ஓர் பூண்டு, Argemone mexicana, L. 46)

nuḷai (p. 278) s. Inferiority, baseness, meanness, ஈனம். 2. [vul. for நொள்ளை.] Blindness. (Beschi.) நுளைப்புழுக்கையன், s. A base or mean person, a shave. (R.) நுளையர், s. [sing. நுளையன், fem. நு ளைச்சி.] A low tribe or fishermen, நெய்த னிலமாக்கள். 2. [in contempt.] Mean ones, as நுளையாஅப்புறம்போ. கடல்மீனுக்குநுளையனிட்டதேசட்டம்.....The name given by a fisherman to fish must be the name; i. e. the meanest knows his own trade. நுளைமுண்டை, s. A dirty fellow, (lit.) a mean widow. 23)

(சது.) 5. The badge-string of the sacerdotal, the royal and of some mechanical tribes, பூணூல். 6. A string tied round an image in a Roman Catholic Church, in token of a vow, பொருத்தனைநூல். 7. A wedding-badge, தாலிநூல். 8. Carpenter's or mason's line, எற்றுநூல்.--In combination it takes grammatical changes like நால். Of நூல் or sacred learning there are நூ three: 1. முதனூல், an original scientific work regarded as divine, the Vedas; 2. வழிநூல், a work derived from and agreeing with the original, being an enlargement, as the Vedanta; 3. சார்புநூல், a work following the original, secondary, but differing in some particulars; collateral writings, as the Adwitta. நூற்பலகல். Study many books. (Avv.) நூலில்லாமல்மாலைகோத்தல். Stringing flowers without a thread; i. e. fabricating. நூற்மறைதெரிந்துசீலத்தொழுகு. Search the Shastras, and lead a regular life. (Avv.) நூலச்சு, s. A weaver's reed, நெசவச்சு. 2. [prov.] A goldsmith's mould for drawing wire, கம்பியச்சு. நூலடி, s. [prov.] A line or membrane passing from the privy parts to the anus. 2. A mark made with the carpenter's line, நூற்குறி. நூலட்டவணை, s. Contents of a book. நூலரங்கேற்ற, inf. See அரங்கேற்ற. நூலறிவு, s. Knowledge of science. நூலாசிரியன், s. The author of a work. நூலாதாரம், s. A primer or first book; the alphabet; [ex ஆதாரம்.] நூலாமாலை, s. Craft, artifice, devices. (R.) நூலாய்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Critics, reviewers, revisers. நூலான்புடை, s. A spider's web. [Madura usage.] See ஒட்டடை. நூலான்பூச்சி, s. The spider, சிலந்திப் பூச்சி. (Beschi.) நூலியற்கை, s. Moral of legal rules. நூலியாப்பு, s. The composition of a work, being of four kinds: 1. தொகுத்தல், substance in brief, compendium, synopsis; 2. விரித்தல், detail, amplification; 3. தொகைவிரி, compendium and detail; 4. மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, translation. நூலிழந்தவள், appel. n. A widow; a woman divested of her wedding-badge, தாலியறுத்தவன். நூலிழை, s. A single thread. நூலிழைக்க, inf. To reel yarn, to disentangle yarn from the skein and wind it on the reel, to unwind yarn. நூலுண்டை, s. A ball of thread, yarn, cotton, &c., நூலுருண்டை. 2. A weaver's bobbin with the yarn, தார்க்கெண்டை. நூலுத்தி, s. The proper arrangement of words, as தந்திரவுத்தி. நூலுந்தாலியும். The wedding string and badge. நூலுரைப்போன், appel. n. A teacher. நூலுரையுணர்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Learned men, கற்றோர். நூலுறிஞ்சி, appel. n. A weaver. (in contempt.) நூலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a treatise. See உறுப்பு. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To buy thread as a weaver. 2. See எடு, v. நூலேணி, s. A rope-ladder, கயிற்றேணி. 2. [in mythol.] Fancied threads or strings, as a guide, by which to pass and repass through the sky, to and from the world of the celestials. 3. [prov.] The shrouds of a vessel, பாய்மரத்தேணி. நூலோடுதல், v. noun. Warping for the loom, பாவோடுதல். நூலோட்ட, inf. To sew or stitch loosely, to haste. நூலோர், s. [pl.] Brahmans as wearing the sacred thread, பார்ப்பார். 2. The learned, the literati, அறிவுடையோர். 3. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். (சது.) நூல்கேட்க, inf. To learn a science under a teacher. See கேள், v. நூல்சுற்றுதல், v. noun. Rolling or winding yarn, thread, &c., on a ball, skein, &c., 2. Winding thread round a sacrificial pot. See கும்பகலசம். நூல்செய்வித்தோன், appel. n. The patron of a work, or a person who moves the author to write a book. நூல்திரிக்க--நூல்முறுக்க, inf. To twist yarn. நூல்நிமிண்டுதல், v. noun. Twisting broken threads together. நூல்நிமிண்டுகிறபேச்சு. Unconnected talk. நூல்போடுதல், v. noun. Marking with a thread, as a carpenter, &c., குறிபோடு தல். 2. Putting on the thread of the Brahman or other caste, பூணூல்போடுதல். நூல்போட்டுப்பிளத்தல், v. noun. Marking and cleaving, as timber. 2. Making an exact division, commonly into halves. 3. [in irony.]Administering strict or rigid justice. நூல்வலை, s. A fisherman's net. நூல்வல்லோர், s. [pl.] The learned, the literati, கல்விமான்கள். 2. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். நூல்வழக்கு, s. The sentiments or theory of a work, நூலினேற்பாடு. நூல்வழிநிற்றல், v. noun. Acting up to the moral precepts of a book. நூல்விடுதல், v. noun. Spinning a thread and letting itself down, as a spider, or caterpillars. நூல்விதி, s. Injunction, prescription or rule laid down in books. நூல்விரிவு, s. Amplification or detail of a work. நூற்கயிறு, s. String made of thread. நூற்கருத்து, s. The sentiments of an author. See கருத்து. 2. The author's meaning of any given passage. நூற்சுழி, s. A skein of thread. நூற்குச்சு, s. A tassel of cotton thread. நூற்குஞ்சம், s. A number of threads composing the warp in a loom. See குஞ்சம். 2. A skein. நூற்குற்றம், s. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. See under குற்றம். நூற்சரடு, s. Cotton thread for stringing beads. நூற்சார்பு, s. Sentiments inculated in a work, &c. See சார்பு. நூற்சுருள்--நூற்சுருணை, s. A skein or clew of thread. நூற்பகந்திரம், s. A venereal ulcer on the peritoneum. See பகந்திரம். நூற்படுகு, s. A weaver's warp. நூற்பந்து, s. A ball of thread. நூற்பயன், s. The general ends or objects of literature. See நாற்பொருள். நூற்பழக்கம், v. noun. Acquaintance with science, literature, &c. நூற்பா, s. A kind of அகவல் verse, commonly employed by lexicographers, சூத்திரப்பா. 2. Warp in weaving, தறியிற் பிணைக்கும்பா. நூற்பாவகவல், s. The நூற்பா verse. நூர்புலவர், s. [pl.] Persons of accomplished or distinguished learning. நூற்புறத்திணை, s. Proof from established authority; a term used by Beschi in Tonnool. நூற்புறனடை, s. Notes of an explanatory character given at the end of a work. See புறனடை. நூற்பொருள், s. Subjects treated of or inculcated in a book. 2. Contents of a book, நூலட்டவணை. நூற்றீட்சை, s. Spiritual illumination by the Shastras. See தீட்சை. நூற்றார், s. A weaver's bobbin; [ex தார்.] நூனயம், s. Advantage or pleasure of learning, கல்விநயம். 2. Superiority of one work over another, on the same subject, நூலின்மேன்மை. நூனாழி--நூல்நாழி, s. A weaver's shuttle. See நாடா. நெ. A letter compounded of ந் and எ. 12)

piṭi (p. 314) s. Handle, haft, hilt, catch ஆயு தப்பிடி. (c.) 2. A female elephant, பெண் யானை. 3. A she-camel, பெண்ணொட்டகம். 4. A female Yak, bosgrunniens, பெண்க வரி. (சது.) 5. (c.) A hold, gripe, clutch, pinch, seizure by the hand, பற்று. 6. Firm grasp of the mind, comprehension, கிரகிப்பு. 7. (fig.) Confidence, reliance, trust, நம்பிக் கை. 8. Help, power, refuge, support, உதவி. 9. Religious belief, opinion or tenet, மதக் கொள்கை. 1. A fist, a closed hand, கை முஷ்டி. 11. A handful with the hand closed, a small quantity, பிடியளவு. பிடிகாசு, s. [prov.] A small sum kept back by a purchaser as auspicious. பிடிகாரன், s. [prov.] A fisherman by occupation மீன்பிடிக்கிறவன். பிடிகொடுக்க, inf. To suffer one's self to be taken. 2. To give a handle. 3. To speak or act so as to commit one's self, to divulge one's affairs unintentionally. பிடிகொடாதபேச்சு, Talk of which the meaning cannot be made out. 2. Abuse or irony in terms not to be taken hold of for prosecution. பிடிக்கட்டு, s. A little bundle especially of palm-leaves, tied up. பிடிக்கொழுக்கட்டை, s. A kind of கொழுக்கட்டை pastry. பிடிசுட்டுப்படைக்க, inf. [prov.] To bake little cakes and offer them to the household gods. பிடிதண்டம், s. Unjust seizure of a person. See தண்டம். பிடிநெல்லு, s. A handful of paddy, taken from each marcal by the servants at the public store, as their perquisite for measuring. பிடிநெல்லுக்கிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To take the handful of paddy for measuring. பிடிபிடியென்றுநிற்க, inf. [fig.] To hasten a business. பிடிபோட, inf. To put a handle to any implement. பிடிப்பிச்சை, s. A handful of rice given by a house-wife to the Brahmans, or other religious mendicants. பிடிப்பிட்டு, s. A small kind of confectionary, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. பிடிமண், s. A handful of sand. நானுன்வாயிற்பிடிமண்போடுகிறேன். I put a handful of sand in your mouth-spoken in anger. பிடியரிசி, s. Handfuls of rice taken from the daily allowance, for charity. பிடியாள், s. A person seized or taken into custody. 2. As அமஞ்சியாள். பிடியெழுத்தாணி, s. A style in a handle, usually folding and with a knife. பிடிமானம், s. Affection, attachment, fondness, favoritism, அன்பு. 2. Relish, zest; a liking, பிரியம். 3. Acquisition, money amassed, தேட்டம். 4. Frugality, sparingness, parsimony, உலோபம். Rigidness, bigotry, pertinacity, perseverance, உறுதி. பிடிமானமில்லாமற்செலவுசெய்கிறான். He expends profusely. பிடியன், appel. n. [vul.] A pot that will hold any given quantity. 2. s. A female elephant, as பிடி. பிடிவாதம், s. Stubbornness, contumacy, pertinacity, perverseness, முரண்டு. 2. Firm determination--as of an enthusiast who tortures himself till the god complies with is request; persistence, strenuousness, விடாநிலை. 3. Unyieldingness, spitefulness, வைராக்கியம். பிடிவாதக்காரன், s. An obstinate, selfwilled person. பிடிவாதி, appel. n. As பிடிவாதக்காரன். பிடிவிட, inf. To let go one's hold or grasp. 2. vlai (p. 378) s. Net, trammel.--Of nets are கயி ற்றுவலை, large sea-nets; கரைவலை, a draw-net; வீச்சுவலை, casting net. வலைகாரர், s. [pl.] Fishermen. வலைக்குணுக்கு, s. Metal-weights on the lower edge of a net. வலைபோட--வலையெறிய--வலைவீச, inf. To cast a net, as a fisherman, &c. வலைப்பட, inf. To be ensnared, caught in a net; to run a risk; to be endangered. (சது.) வலைப்பூச்சி, s. the spider. வலையர், s. [sing. வலையன், fem. வலைச்சி.] Inhabitants of villages near the sea, பரத வன். 2. Fishermen. 3.
