An inverted construction in poetry, by which the last word in a verse is connected with the first, விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள். கடைதிறப்பு, v. noun. Opening a door. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. [in grammar.] Letters proper to end a word, இறுதிநிலை. கடைபோக, inf. To end, terminate, conclude, முடிய. 2. To be fulfilled, நிறைவேற. கடைபோட--கடைவைக்க, inf. To ascertain clearly, to know certainly, தெளிய. 2. To determine, resolve firmly, be decided in purpose either in a good or evil course, துணிய. 3. To remember, to bear in mind benefits, to be grateful, &c., to be deeply sensible of one's obligations for favor received, மறவாமலிருக்க. 4. To have an abiding sense of the importance of virtue and religion, சன்மார்க்கத்திலுறுதியாயி ருக்க. 5. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. To grasp, resort to--as the soul for its last refuge, பற்ற. 7. To provide, be provident, be economical, வீண்செலவுசெய்யாது வைக்க. (p.) கதவிலரேதற்சார்ந்தார்வண்ணங்கடைப்பிடியாதார். Unkind are they who are forgetful of the situation of their friends. (காரிகையுரை.) மற்றதன்கள்ளங்கடைப்பிடித்தனன்று. A linch-pin, அச் சாணி. 2. A peg or pin used to keep a tenon in a mortise, or for any similar purpose, பூட்டாணி. கடையாந்தரம்--கடையீறு, s. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A shop where commodities of various kinds are sold. மளிகைக்கடை, s. A wholesale ware-house. காசுக்கடை, s. An exchange. அடிக்கடை, s. The first shop in a market-street. மருந்துக்கடை, s. [in Christian usage.] One who has repented; a convert. குணப்பண்பு, s. [in gram.] Sensible qualities of objects--as bitterness, whiteness--as distinguished from குறிப்புப்பண்பு, ideal quality, and தொழிற்பண்பு, acting quality. See பண்பு. குணப்பிழை, s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them. The enumeration of பரிமேலழகர், the commentator of the Cural, as agreeing with the Agamas, is:--1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், self-existence, independence. 2. தூயவுடம்பினனாதல், immaculateness. 3. இயற்கையுணர்வினனாதல், intuitive wisdom. 4. முற்றுமுணர்தல், omniscience. 5. இயல்பாகவே பாசங்களினீங்கிநிற் றல், freedom from the snares and illusions to which a derived intelligence is exposed. 6. பொருளுடைமை, unbounded kindness. 7. முடிவிலாற்றலுடைமை, omnipotence. 8. வரம்பிலின்பமுடைமை, infinite happiness. Another enumeration, as given in Jaina books, is--1. கடையிலாஞானம், infinite wisdom. 2. கடையிலாக்காட்சி, omniscience. 3. கடையிலாவீரியம், omnipotence. 4. கடையிலாவின்பம், boundless happiness. 5. நாமமின்மை, being nameless. 6. கோத்தி ரமின்மை, without descent. 7. ஆயுவின்மை, without age; eternal. 8. அந்தாரயமின்மை, unobstructed. 13)

caṉṉatam (p. 173) s. Temporary possession, i. e., the presence of a demon in a person to utter oracles as to the result of a sickness, the means to be used for healing, whether a person will have issue, &c., ஆசேவம். 2. Oracle, the utterance of oracles, தெய்வங்கூறல். 3. (fig.) Rage, excessive anger, உத்தண்டம். 4. (fig.) The vanity and parade of one elated from office, &c., வீறாப்பு. (c.) சன்னதக்காரன், s. One who utters oracles by possession. சன்னதங்குலைய, inf. To depart--as the demon from one possessed. 2. To be deprived of authority, office, &c. சன்னதங்கேட்க, inf. To consult the oracle. சன்னதங்கொண்டாட, inf. To be possessed; to be in a rage; to assume parade, &c. See சன்னதம். சன்னதமழைக்க, inf. [prov.] To invoke the demon by singing its praises, burning incense, &c., to come, and take possession.--Note. It is often not known whether any of the company will be possessed, or who, if any. சன்னதமாட, inf. To whirl the head and be agitated, as one temporarily possessed. சன்னதமேற--சன்னதம்பற்ற--சன்னத ம்வர, inf. To possess a person, as a demon to utter oracles. 2. (fig.) To be provoked, உத்தண்டங்கொள்ள. தன்னைமறந்தசன்னதம், s. [prov.] Extravagant pride, forgetfulness of one's low origin, &c., பெருமைபாராட்டல். 78) *

tṭumāṟu (p. 222) கிறேன், தடுமாறினேன், வேன், தடுமாற, v. n. [improp. தடமாடு.] To be puzzled, perplexed, disconcerted, bewildered, கலங்க. 2. To be displaced, to be deranged, to be disordered, கலைய. 3. To doubt, to hesitate, to be in suspense, சந்தேகிக்க. (c.) மனந்தடுமாறேல். Be not perplexed. (Avv.) தடுமாறித்திரிய, inf. To roam, as a vagabond. தடுமாறியிடமொழிக்க, inf. To manage business without method or order. (R.) தடுமாறிவிழ, inf. To slip and fall. தடுமாற்றம், v. noun. [improp. தடமாட் டம்.] Perplexity, perturbation, bewiderment. கலக்கம். 2. Doubt, hesitancy, suspense, சந்தேகம். 3. Mistake, proneness to mistake, தவறுகை. 4. Aberration of mind, delirium, மயக்கம். (c.) அவனுக்குத்தடுமாற்றமாயிருக்கிறது. He is confused. தடுமாற்றக்காரன், s. niṉai (p. 277) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To consider, reflect, கருத. (p.) நினைவு, v. noun. Thought, &c., as நி னைப்பு. (c.) நினைவாயிருக்கிறது. There is recollection. எனக்குநினைவில்லை. I do not remember it; I cannot call it to mind. நினைவுகூர, inf. To recollect. See கூர், v. நினைவுகேடு, v. noun. Loss of memory, forgetfulness, மறதி. 2. Loss of consciousness, as in sleep, swooning, drunkenness, &c., கருத்தழிவு. நினைவுதடுமாற்றம், v. noun. Delirium, derangement. நினைவுத்தப்பு--நினைவுமோசம், s. A mistake in thought, forgetting. நினைவுவைக்க, inf. To apply the mind, to fix the thoughts on the Deity, or any object, மனம்வைக்க. 2. To hanker after, to desire, இச்சிக்க. 3. To think of one, நினைக்க. 4. To remember with gratitude, or affection, ஞாபகஞ்செய்ய. நினைவோட, inf. To occur as a train of thought, to be pursued, as an object in the mind. 210)

niṉai (p. 277) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To think, consider, reflect, யோசிக்க. 2. To meditate, contemplate, சிந்திக்க. 3. To extend, design, have in view, எண்ண. 4. To bear in mind, call or recall to mind, to remember, ஞாபகஞ்செய்ய. 5. To imagine, fancy, suppose, பாவிக்க. 6. To exert volition; to will, to purpose, தீர்மானிக்க. 7. To think upon, to design to eye with mercy, கடாட்சிக்க. 8. To be pleased, to please to do a think, &c., பிரியமுற. 9. To be grateful for, to remember with gratitude, நன் றியறிய. (c.) நினைக்கவும்ஆகும். He no sooner thinks than it is done. நினைத்தகாரியஞ்சொல்லுகிறது. To tell, as a soothsayer, &c., what one has in view and the result of his application. நினைத்ததுமுடிப்பான். He will accomplish whatever he undertakes. நினைத்துவந்துதவினார். Unsolicited, he came to my help. தாங்கள்நினைத்திருந்தநன்மையினாலேஎனக்குயாதொ ருகுறைவுமில்லை. By your kind remembrance I am free from want. அவன்நினைத்ததுசித்தித்தது. The thing occurred as he expected. நினைத்தபடி. According to thought. 2. At pleasure, according to choice. நினைத்தகாரியம், s. The thing intended, நோக்கினது. 2. The thing in veiw in consulting a soothsayer, எண்ணினது. 3. A thing wished for, or expected, விரும் பினது. நினைத்துநினைத்துப்பேச, inf. To tell by little and little, with after thoughts; sometimes retracting what was previously said; commonly in a bad sense. நினைத்துப்பார்க்க, inf. To reflect, consider, deliberate. 2. To endeaver to call to mind, to try to recollect. நினைப்பு, v. noun. Thought, idea, reflection, எண்ணம். 2. Recollection, remembrance, ஞாபகம். 3. Imagination, conception, fancy, supposition, notion, பாவனை. 4. Object, design, intention, purpose, நோக்கம். 5. Care, attention, thoughtfulness, விழிப்பு. 6. A memorandum, a memento, a memorial, நினைப்பூட் டுங்குறிப்பு. 7. Reverie, whim, freak, conceit, வீண்தோற்றம். (c.) ஒருநினைப்புக்குக்கேட்டேன். I asked it for a certain object. நினைப்பறிய, inf. To know one's thoughts, views, wishes or intentions. நினைப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be mindful, cautious, attentive, thoughtful. நினைப்பாளி, appel. n. A person with a good memory, ஞாபகமுடையோன். நினைப்புக்கூட்ட, inf. To collect one's thoughts. 2. To remind another. நினைப்புமறப்பு, v. noun. Remembrance and forgetfulness. நினைப்பூட்ட, inf. To put in mind, to remind, ஞாபகமுண்டாக்க. 2. To suggest, to awaken attention, நினைவுறுத்த. 211)

mṟ (p. 346) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To forget, அயர்க்க. 2. To be diverted from a course of conduct, so as to cease from it, விட்டுவிட. 3. To neglect, disregard, அசட் டைபண்ண. 4.
