There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. Round, black spots in fruits, when they are over-ripe, or spoiled. ஆனைக்கண்படுதல்--ஆனைக்கண் வி ழுதல், v. noun. The appearing of spots, or defects in fruits. பலாப்பழமானைக்கண்பட்டுப் போயிற்று. The jack fruit has got a defect or flaw. ஆனைக்கதுப்பு, s. The frontal sinus of the elephant, from which secretion exudes when the animal is in rut. ஆனைக்களிமுளையான், s. An elephant's stall. 2. A row of elephants. ஆனைப்பாகன், s. An elephanteer, or one who tames or guides elephants. ஆனைப்பிச்சான், s. A plant, ஓர் பூண்டு. ஆனைப்பேன், s. An insect that lives in the brinjall plant, கத்தரிச்செடியிலு ண்டாகுமோர்பூச்சி. ஆனைமஞ்சள், s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆனைமதம், s. An elephant's rut. ஆனைமத்தகம், s. An elephant's skull or part of the head, கும்பம். இ. A short letter, similar to I in English, ஓர்குற்றெழுத்து. 2. A demonstrative prefix, சுட்டெழுத்து--as இந்த, this. 3. A termination of the second person singular, முன்னிலையொருமைவிகுதி--as உண்டி, thou hast eaten. 4. An imperative second person singular, முன்னிலையேவலொருமைவிகுதி-as சொல்லுதி, say thou. 5. A feminine appellative termination, பெண்பால்விகுதி-as கூனி, a hump-backed woman. 6. A singular termination, common to the masc. and fem., உயர்திணையொருமைவிகுதி--as மானி, an honorable person--பாவி, a sinner. 7. A termination in the singular, common to each gender, இருதிணைமுக்கூற்றொருமைவிகுதி --as செவியிலி, a man, woman, or animal without ears. 8. An expletive inserted at pleasure, when the preceding word ends with any letter except ய், and the following word begins with ய், சாரியை--as காலியாது, from கால், foot and யாது, which. 9. A termination of some participles, வினையெச்சவிகு தி--as எண்ணி, சொல்லி, &c. 1. A prefix to ஆனைமயிர், s. The hair of an elephant's tail. ஆனைமயிர்க்காப்பு, s. Bracelets of the hair of elephants' tails. ஆனைமலை, s. The name of a mountain in the south near Madura. ஆனைமுகவன்--ஆனைமுகன், s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். 2. An Asoor, கசமுகா சுரன். (p.) ஆனைமுதுகு, s. A fabulous bird --said to devour the elephant. ஆனையிலத்தி, s. Elephant's dung. ஆனையூர்தி, s. Indra whose vehicle is the elephant, இந்திரன். 2. Ian, ஐயன். (p.) ஆனையேற்றம், s. Learning and practising to ride on an elephant, யானை யேறிப்பழகுகை. ஆனைவணங்கி, s. A kind of plant whose flower is supposed to resemble the trunk of an elephant. It is also fancied to be a preservative against the attack of a wild elephant, which, it is said, will retire abashed at the sight of it, தேட்கொடுக்குப்பூண்டு. ஆனைவாழை, s. oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. See தளை. ஒன்றார்--ஒன்னாதார்--ஒன்னார், s. Foes, unfriendly persons. (p.) ஒன்றுகுடி, s. A family or person living in another's house, garden, &c. See ஒட்டுக்குடி and ஒதுக்குக்குடி. ஒன்றுகூட்டு, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

kṟi (p. 101) s. A spiced mixture with fish, meat, or vegetable--eaten with boiled rice, பதார்த்தம். (c.) 2. (p.) Pepper, மிளகு. கறிக்குடலை, s. A doubled leaf for carrying curry in the hand. கறிக்கூட்டு, s. Curry condiments ground together. கறிச்சுரை, s. A class of gourds, any of the edible species, சுரை. கறித்தும்பை, s. A plant so called because it is esculent. கறித்தூள், s. Curry powders. கறித்தேங்காய், s. A cocoanut suitable for curry. கறிபதார்த்தங்கள், s. Things proper to form the main ingredients in curries, not the curry seeds. கறிப்பாலை, s. A plant, ஓர்பாலை. கறிமசாலை, s. The ingredients of curry. கறியுப்பு, s. Culinary salt, உப்பு. கறிவடகம், s. Curry condiments ground together and dried in cakes to be kept for use. மரக்கறி, s. Curry of vegetables. இலைக்கறி, s. A dish of greens or pot herbs, அடகு. புளிங்கறி, s. A sour curry. துவட்டற்கறி, s. kuṭl (p. 116) s. Bowels, entrails, intestines, garbage, குடர்--Note. இரைக்குடல், கல்லுக்கு டல், சிறுகுடல், தீனிக்குடல், பெருங்குடல்மணிக் குடல், மலக்குடல்--are different kinds of குடல் (See those words.) 2. A kind of fungous matter in the hollow of gourds, &c. காய்குடல். 3. Pith in the body of trees, மரக்குடல். 4. Streaks running down the interrior of plantains and other fruits, பழக்குடல். குடலதிருகிறது. The bowels tremble. குடலுங்கூந்தலுங்கொண்டதுகோலம். The bowels and the hair must be treated as accustomed. குடலழுகினபூசனிக்காய். A pumpkin, the internal part of which is rotten. குடல்கொழுத்தது. The bowels are grown fatty; causing a bad appetite--also exciting pride. குடலெரிகின்றது. The bowels are yearn. குடலேறிக்கொண்டுது. The bowels are twisted or deranged--as by assuming an unnatural position. குடலொட்டிக்கழிய. To have a flux from noxious matter in the bowels; to have a severe and copious discharge at stool. குடலேற்றம், s. Twisting or derangement of the bowels, See ஏற்றம். குடல்மாலை, s. The folds or turnings of the bowels. குடல்வலி, s. Aching pains in the bowels, caused often by continued hunger. குடல்வாதம், s. A disease causing flatulency and frequent watery discharges. குடல்கவ்வு, s. The omentum, caul. குடற்பிரிவு, v. noun. [prov.] A dislodgment of the bowels. குடற்புரை, s. The orifice of the bowels. குடற்பை--குடற்போர்வை, s. The womb, uterus. குடலறவோட, inf. To run very fast so as to cause the bowels to pant; lit. loosen or part. குடலைப்பிடுங்க, inf. To draw out the entrails. 2. (metoph.) To heave, retch, nauseate. குடல்காய்தல், v. noun. Drying of the intestines--being without food: starving. 31)

A small pot of water, wound round with thread and otherwise ornamented, placed on heaps of grain, deified temporarily by incantations, and worshipped as the representative of a deity--as many pots being set as there are deities invoked on the occasion, மந் திரகும்பம். கும்பசலம், s. The water in the sacred pot, afterwards sprinkled on the people, or sipped by them, as possessing mystic virtue to cure disease, to expiate sin, &c., மந்திரகும்பநீர். கும்பவஸ்திரம், s. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. To carry in procession the sacred pot with appropriate ceremonies. கும்பம்நிறுத்த--கும்பம்வைக்க--கும்பம் ஸ்்தாபிக்க, inf. To set up a sacrificial pot for worship. கும்பம்போட--கும்பங்்கொட்ட, inf.
