uṇ (p. 59) --உண்ணு, கிறேன், உண்டே ன், உண்பேன் or உண்ணுவேன், உண்ண, v. a. To eat, drink, suck--as a child; to take food, whether solids, liquids or other kinds, to taste, அருந்த. 2. To feed, make a full meal --as a dinner, &c., புசிக்க. 3. To enjoy, suffer, experience, or receive the fruits of actions performed in former births, or in future the actions of the present, அனுபவிக்க. 4. To imbibe, absorb, விழுங்க.--Note. With verbal roots and sometimes with verbal nouns it forms a passive--as அடியுண்ண, to be beaten; அலையுண்ண, to be distressed. உண்டசுற்றமுருகும். Relations or friends who have eaten together will cherish towards each other kindly feelings. உண்டசோற்றுக்கிரண்டகம்பண்ணப்படாது. One ought not to be ungrateful to his benefactor. உண்டார்மேனிகண்டாற்றெரியும். A person's diet may be known by his appearance. உண்ணக்கைசலிக்க. To be so delicate as to tire by eating--as a dainty child, &c. 2. To be wearied, cloyed, sated, &c. by too profuse a supply of food. உய்யாவினைப்பயனுண்ணுங்காலை. While experiencing the inevitable fruits of former births. உண்கலம், s. A plate or dish to cat from, a porringer, commonly brass, தாலம். உண்டாட்டு, s. Play of females, மகளிர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Play, sport, விளையாட்டு. 3. Festivity, drinking, joviality, மதுவுண் டாடுகை. உண்ணி, s. An appellative termination often contracted to உணி--as தூக்குணி, &c., one who eats, an eater. உண்ணீர், s. Water to drink. உண்பிக்க, inf. To cause to eat, drink, &c., feed one, உண்ணுவிக்க. தூக்குணி, s. One so vile and daring as not to fear hanging. 2. A malefactor who is hanged. 3. One who hangs about to get food. அழுகுணி, s. One who is always weeping; also one who is disposed to weep. அடியுணி--குட்டுணி, s. One who is beaten. குத்துணி, s. One who is stabbed. 2. A dastard, mean spirited person. இரப்புணி, s. A beggar, one who eats what he begs. அடையுணி, s. One dependent for food. கட்டுண்ண, inf. To be tied up. வெட்டுண்ண, inf. To be cut down. தடையுண்ண, inf. To be hindered. மையுண்கண்ணி, s. A woman with painted eyes, (lit.) she whose eyes have absorbed paint. முலையுண்ணுங்குழந்தை, s. An infant at the breast. நீலுண்டுகிலிலை. uy (p. 63) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To live as man, beast, or vegetables; to subsist, survive, revive or flourish--as trees, plants, &c., சீவிக்க. 2. (p.) To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A shop where commodities of various kinds are sold. மளிகைக்கடை, s. A wholesale ware-house. காசுக்கடை, s. An exchange. அடிக்கடை, s. The first shop in a market-street. மருந்துக்கடை, s. An apothecary's shop. கசாய்க்கடை, s. (Tel.) A butcher's shop. சாராயக்கடை, s. An arrack shop. கீரைக்கடை, s. A green-grocer's shop. சவுளிக்கடை, s. A cloth-merchant's shop. விரற்கடை, s. kol (p. 146) --கொல்லு, கிறேன், கொன்றேன், வேன், கொல்ல, v. a. To take life, kill, slay, murder, கொலைசெய்ய. 2. To deprive mercury of its metallic properties by oxidation; to kill mercury, &c., இரசமுதலிய வற்றைக்கொல்ல. (c.) 3. (fig.) To vex, tease; to molest by continual importunity, அலட்ட. அரசனன்றுகொல்லுந்தெய்வம்நின்றுகொல்லும். The king is swift in executing judgment, but God waits. பார்க்கும்பார்வைஆsைக்கொன்றுபோடும். [prov.] His stern looks are enough to kill one. தன்னைக்கொல்லவரும்பசுவையுங்கொல்லவேண்டும். Even a cow that attacks one may be killed, i. e., we may destroy life in selfdefence. கொல்லத்தக்கசினம். Mortal wrath. கொல்லாமற்கொல்ல, inf. To speak sarcastically, to put one to shame by sarcasm. 2. To do one a great injury, to ruin one. 3. To compass one's death indirectly. 4. To touch the heart, by returning good for evil. கொல்லாமை, v. noun. [neg.] Abstinence from killing, one of the virtues. கொல்லாவிரதம், s. Vows to abstain from killing--as made by Jainas, Saivas, &c. கொல்லாவேதம், s. The sacred books or religion of the Jainas, அருகர்வேதம். கொல்லாவேதன், s. Argha--as the teacher of கொல்லாவேதம், அருகன். சாகக்கொல்ல, inf. To kill, to kill utterly. 2. To harass, torment. நன்றிகொல்ல, inf. To be ungrateful. 2. To abuse kindness. (குற.) கொல்லி, s. That which kills--as in ஆட்கொல்லி, ஈர்கொல்லி, கன்றுகொல்லி, சோறு கொல்லி, தாயைக்கொல்லி, தந்தையைக்கொல்லி, பிள்ளைகொல்லி, மரங்கொல்லி, மீன்கொல்லி, மூட் டைகொல்லி, &c. 2. A bow, வில். (p.) 3. Experimental knowledge. செய்பாகங்கைபாகமறியவேண்டும். One must be acquainted with the preparation and prescription of medicines. செய்பொருள், s. [in gram.] The objective case, செயப்படுபொருள். செய்யாமற்செய்தஉதவி, s. A favor conferred where none has been received. (c.) செய்யுங்காரியம், s. A thing that ought to be done, a duty. 2. To be ungrateful. நன்றிகெட்டவன்--நன்றியற்றவன்--நன் றியில்லாதவன். appel. n. An ungrateful man. நன்றிகொல்லுதல்-நன்றிகோறல், v. noun. Being ungrateful, (lit.) slaying benefits, செய்நன்றிமறத்தல். (p.) See கொல், v. நன்றிசொல்ல, inf. To acknowledge benefits, to thank. நன்றிநினைக்க, inf. To remember benefits, to be grateful. நன்றிமறத்தல், v. noun. Forgetting benefits. நன்றிமறப்பதுநன்றன்றுநன்றல்லதன்றேமறப்பது நன்று. To forget a benefit is bad; to forget an injury is good. நன்றிமறவேல். Forget not a benefit. (Avu.) நா நாவெடுக்கவில்லை.
