There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. tku (p. 220) கிறேன், ந்தேன், or தக்கேன், வேன், தக, v. n. To be fit, meet, suitable requisite, proper, decent, adequate, practicable, consistent, தக்கதாக. (c.) 2. To be worthy, eligible, ஏற்க. 3. To be proportionate, according to, commensurate with, பொருத் தமாயிருக்க. 4. To be lawful, just, equitable, right, உரிமையாக. 5. To be peculiar to, appertain to, be proper for, இயல்பாயிருக்க. எண்டகுசெல்வம். Requisite prosperity. வியத்தகுகல்வி. Admirable erudition. (p.) தகுந்தாற்போல. As convenient, as proper. செய்யத்தகுங்காரியம். The thing proper to be done. 2. A possible or practicable thing. தகுந்தமட்டும். As far as in one's power. தகாத, adj. Improper, unsuitable, unfit. தகாதது, appel. n. That which is unfit. தகாதவன், s. An improper, unsuitable, indecent, unfit, incompetent or despicable person. தகாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Unfitness, unsuitableness, inadequacy, impropriety, inability, unworthiness, incompetency, inexpediency, incongruity, தகு தியின்மை. தகுந்தகாதென்றறிய, inf. To know whether a thing is proper or not. தகுமானபுள்ளி--தகுமானமனிதன், s. A worthy, responsible, competent man; a man of substance or wealth. (c.) தகுந்த அவுழ்தம், s. Proper remedy. தகுந்தசெலவு, v. noun. Proper expenditure. தகுந்தபிராயம், s. Proper age. தகுமானஏது, s. A reasonable cause. தகுமானவேளை--தகுந்தவேளை, s. Due time, proper time. தகும, (third per. neuter.) It is proper, necessary. தகும்படி, adv. Properly, decently, orderly, &c. 2)

tṭṭu (p. 222) கிறேன், தட்டினேன், வேன், தட்ட, v. a. To knock at, as a door, கதவைத்தட்ட. 2. To strike, as a gong; to tap, pat, slap, அறைய. 3. To touch or strive so as to displace, to shake off as dust, &c., தட்டிய திர்க்க. 4. To reject, as a temptation, to discard, விலக்க. 5. To strike in playing on drums, tambourines, the guitar, &c., with a plectrum, or otherwise, கொட்ட. 6. To strike against, commonly accidentally. dash against, மூட்ட. 7. To strike or ward off, to parry, தடுக்க. 8. To evade, palliate, equivocate, புரட்ட. 9. To frustrate, thwart, குலைக்க. 1. To procure one's dismissal from office, அகற்ற. 11. [with dative.] To be scanty, wanting, as food, rain, water, &c., to be reduced, as the milk of a cow, குறைவுபட. 29. To elude, to escape, தப்ப. 3. [with dative.] To be at fault, to fail, as the hand playing on an instrument, writing, performing an operation, &c., or the tongue in reading or speaking, &c., தவற. 31. To hobble as a verse, தலைகாட்ட.--Note. The meanings are often cant. அனேகரைக்காய்ச்சல்தட்டிப்போட்டது. The fever has prostrated many persons. தண்ணீர்தலைதட்டநிற்கிறது. The water is head deep. [prov.] தலையைத்தட்டிப்போட்டது. It has carried off his head. தேடியபொருள்காலிலேதட்டினதுபோல. As if the thing sought for, had struck against the foot; i. e. getting accidentally the thing desired. நெஞ்சிலேதட்டிப்பார். Knock at your own breast, and inquire. பல்லைத்தட்டிவிடு. Knock out his teeth. மரங்கள் தெருத்தட்டநிற்கின்றன. The trees extend the whole length of the street. [prov.] தொண்டைக்குள்ளேஏதோதட்டுகிறது. There is something in my throat obstructing the passage. அவன்என்வார்த்தையைத்தட்டிப்போட்டான். He has disobeyed me. மழைதட்டிப்போயிற்று. Rain is deficient. அரிசித்தட்டிப்போயிற்று. The rice is nearly exhausted; or rice is very dear and scarce. தட்டாமல்முட்டாமல் விழுங்கிப்போட்டான். He has swallowed it (his large income) without difficulty. [prov.] தட்டாமல்வைக்க, inf. To place things so as not to touch each other. தட்டவைக்கப்பார்க்க--தட்டவைக்கநி னைக்க, inf. To put one on a wrong scent when in pursuit of another. தட்டிக்கிளம்ப--தட்டியெழும்ப, inf. To rice grow high, or tall. 2. To rise to affluence, influence, &c. 3. To be animated with joy, or zeal for an enterprize; to be roused with anger. தட்டிக்கேட்க, inf. To speak or remonstrate. தட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To quiet, to lull by tapping. 2. To cheer, to encourage men or beasts by patting on the back, shoulders, &c. 3. [in prison bars.] To tap a person so that another may grasp him. தட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To be exhausted, to be in want. 2. To strike against, to be resisted, by an obstacle. 3. To be retarded in reading, speaking, or business. 4. To fail, to prove inadequate. 5. To shake off the dust by striking the foot upon the ground. மேலேதட்டிக்கொள்ளாதே. Don't come in contact with me--said by one afraid of defilement. கப்பல்நிலந்தட்டிக்கொண்டது. The ship is aground, striking, &c. தட்டிச்சொல்ல, inf. To contradict. 2. [prov.] To speak, or repeat a lesson with hesitation; to stammer. தட்டிப்பறிக்க, inf. To strike and snatch away. 2. To get by stratagem. தட்டிப்பறைசாற்ற, inf. To publish by beat of drum. 2. To blab out private matters, to asperse one's character. தட்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To try to fish out secrets from one. 2. To sit one's erudition, caste, property, &c. 3. To try silver coins, by ringing, and snapping them with the fingers. தட்டிப்பேச, inf. To oppose, to remonstrate, to object, to protest against. தட்டிப்போட, inf. To strike and spill; to over-turn, &c. 2. (fig.) To overcome one in a game, &c. தட்டிமாற, inf. To evade, shift a fault upon another; to baffle one and escape. 2. To give one a heavy blow. தட்டியெடுத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To secure a thing for one's self, deceiving another. 2. To get a thing in spite of the endeavours of others. தட்டியெழுப்ப, inf. To tap and rouse one. தட்டியோட்ட, inf. (also. அதட்டியோ ட்ட.) To drive beasts rapidly. தட்டிவிட, inf. To strike and overturn. 2. To cheer by patting the shoulders of combatants, &c. 3. To animate, encourage. 4. To frustrate. 5. To contradict, refuse. 6. [prov.] To change the position of different yokes of oxen, in ploughing, putting the hindermost, forward, &c. 7. To cause the oxen to turn back to deepen the furrows. 8. (c.) To drive cattle faster, to accelerate their speed. இனித்தட்டிவிடு. Wait no longer. தட்டிவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To suggest, to throw in a word to effect an object; to speak once, expecting to speak again on the subject. தலைதட்டியளக்க, inf. To strike the measure. See தடவு, v. சொல்லைத்தட்ட, inf. tāẕcci (p. 235) s. Meanness, baseness, vileness, கீழ்மை. 2. Inferiority, disparagement, subordination, தாழ்வு. 3. Lowliness, humbleness, submissiveness, தாழ்மை. 4. Deficiency, want, scarcity; arrears, குறைவு. 5. Deterioration, degradation, loss; decay of wealth, power, fame, &c., கேடு. 6. Dishonor, discredit, disgrace, இகழ்ச்சி. 7. Incompetency, inadequacy, ஏலாமை. 8. Failure in competition or in an enterprize, &c., தவறு. (c.) அதைத்தொட்டுத்தாழ்ச்சியில்லை. There is no impedimen from that. இதற்கதுதாழ்ச்சியாயிருக்கிறது. That is inferior to this. ஒன்றுதாழ்ச்சியாயிருக்கிறது. There is something wanting, it is defective in one respect. தாழ்ச்சிப்பட, s. To prove inferior, to be incompetent, to be in disgrace. சங்கைத்தாழ்ச்சி--மானத்தாழ்ச்சி, s. Dishonor, discredit, disgrace. மழைத்தாழ்ச்சி, s. Want of rain, little rain. 17)

To insinuate itself, to take effect as poison, &c., பிடிப்புற. 5. To dye, to tinge, to take, as color, நிறக்க. 6. To kindle, as fire, anger, desire, &c., to ignite, தீமூள. 7. To apprehend, to comprehend, கிரகிக்க. 8. To pursue, aim at a thing தொடர. 9. To stick, ஓட்ட. 1. To become joined or welded, as metals soldered, &c., பொருந்த. 11. To be sufficient, போதுமானதாக. 12. To smart, to feel pungent, as pepper in the eyes, உறைக்க. 13. To be formed in the mind, as thoughts or opinions, எண்ணமு ண்டாக. 14. To form, as rust, as flowerbuds, as a flower, a young fruit, a stone in the fruit, துருமுதலியபிடிக்க. 15. To drive away. &c., துரத்த, used in the South. (c.) பணம்பற்றிக்கொண்டேன். I have received the money வரப்பற்றிக்கொண்டேன். The money, or goods, sent, came to my hands, I took charge of them. வீட்டிலேநெருப்புப்பற்றிக்கொண்டது. The house took fire. பற்றவில்லை. It is insufficient. 2. It does not stick, kindle, &c. பற்றாது. It is not enough. பற்றாக்குறைக்குநீவந்தாயோ. Did you come to share in what is insufficient for me? மாட்டைப்பற்றிக்கொண்டுவா. Drive the oxen here. பற்றும்பற்றாமலிருக்கிறது. It is not quite sufficient. கரையைப்பற்றிவா. Come towards the shore. மயிர்பற்றிப்போயிற்று. The animal has become shaggy. commonly spoken of sheep. பற்றவைக்க, inf. [prov. பற்றச்சுட.] To solder, To weld 2. To kindle a fire. 3.
