uṟai (p. 68) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To be pungent, biting, sharp, கார்க்க. 2. To burn--as the body from exposure to the sun --the mouth, or a sore from any thing pungent--the back after flogging, &c., எரிய. 3. To affect acutely, cut to the quick--as a blow, rebuke, a sarcasm, &c.; to impress, தாக்க. 4. To become firm, fast, steadfast, decided--as the mind, அழுந்த. உறைக்கமழைபெய்தது. To lead the calf to the cow to suck. ஊட்டுந்தாய், s. a foster-mother, செவிலி. See தாய். பிழைப்பூட்ட, inf. To reanimate, restore to life. 2. To furnish means of sustenance. இந்தவைத்தியன்போகுமுயிரைப்பிழைப்பூட்டினான். The doctor has restored him to life. நினைப்பூட்ட, inf. To remind, to put in mind. நினைப்பூட்டி, s. A monument. ஊட்டு, v. noun. Feeding, உண் பிக்கை. 2. s. A morsel, or portion given to a child, a sick person, &c., கவளம். ஊட்டுக்கன்று, s. A sucking calf. ஊட்டுமறந்தகன்று, s. ūṟu (p. 71) கிறது, ஊறினது, ம், ஊற, v. a. To spring, flow as water in a well, to issue, நீரூற. 2. To soak, to be steeped, pickled, காய்முதலியவூற. 3. To ooze through, percolate, filter, distil, கசிய. 4. To run or spread--as ink in paper, as dampness in land around a spring; to become moist, மைமுதலியவூற. 5. To form, become collected--as milk in the breast, toddy in palm flowers, &c., பால்முதலியனசுரக்க. 6. To form as raw flesh in a sore, to heal, காயத்திலூன்வளர. 7. To increase--as flesh in a person who has been wasted by disease, to increase by slow degrees, மெலி ந்தவுடல்தேற. (c.) தொட்டளைத்தூறுமணற்கேணிமாந்தர்க்குக் கற்றனைத் தூறுமறிவு. The more you dig in a sandy soil the more does the water spring forth; so the more you apply to science the more your knowledge will increase. கற்கவூறுங்கலைஞானம். By learning, knowledge is increased. இறைத்தகிணறூறும்இறையாக்கிணறூறாது. Water issues from the springs of a well constantly drawn, but from one not drawn, it ceases to do so; i. e. the more one gives, the more will be given to him. ஊறணி, s. A fountain, a spring of water, ஊற்று. 2. [prov.] Good, moist land where water oozes out, கசிவுநிலம். 3. Wet, marshy, or brackish lands, சேற்று நிலம். 4. Income, property stored up, வருவாய் (probably a corruption of ஊ றுநீர்). ஊறவூறக்கறக்க, inf. To milk the cow as fast as the milk forms. 2. To obtain money from a person as fast as he gets it. ஊறவைக்க, inf. To steep, pickle, imbue, macerate. ஊறுகாய், s. Pickled fruits, அடை காய். ஊறுநீர், s. Spring-water, ஊற்று நீர். ஊறுபுண், s. A healing wound, ஆறிவரும்புண். தேனூறுமலர், s. The honey forming flower. ஊறல், v. noun. Oozing as from a sore, &c., percolation, discharge, issue, ஊறுகை. 2. s. A small spring, springwater, ஊற்று. 3. A tincture, infusion, &c., மருந்திலூறல். 4. A taint, or faint mixture of another metal, பஞ்சலோகக்கலப்பு. 5. One's income acquisition, property amassed, &c., வருவாய். 6. A slight degree of verdigris, களிம்பு. ஊறற்பாக்கு, s. Betel-put soaked to render it fit for use. ஊறற்றாள், s. Sinking paper.

eṟumpu (p. 75) s. An ant, emmet, pismire, உறவி. எறும்பூருகின்றது. The ant runs or creeps. எறும்புப்புற்று--எறும்புவளை, s. An ant's hole. கட்டெறும்பு, s. A kind of ant whose bite causes swelling, acute pain Formica compressa, Fabr. முசிட்டெறும்பு--முசிற்றெறும்பு, (s.) [prop. முயிறு]. A kind of large red ant which makes its nest on trees, and whose bite is very painful, Formica elongata, Fabr. A medicinal oil is prepared from their eggs--called முயிற்றுமுட் டைத்தைலம். தலைப்புரட்டையெறும்பு, s. A kind of black ant with a large head constantly shaking. கடுத்தவாயெறும்பு, s. A black ant, with a large head, whose bite is severe. கொள்ளியெறும்பு--கொள்ளிவா லெறும்பு, s. An ant that stings. பேய்க்காலெறும்பு, s. A kind of small black ant with long feet. குருவெறும்பு, s. A kind of large red ant. சுள்ளெறும்பு, s. A kind of small black ant. சிற்றெறும்பு, s. A small emmet. தேனெறும்பு, s. A species of ant which forms honey in its nest. 30)

eḷ (p. 75) --எள்ளு, கிறேன், எள்ளினேன், வேன், எள்ள, v. a. To scoff, abuse, contemn, disregard, hold in contempt, despise, நிந் திக்க. 2. The oil has oozed out; i. e. from the pores which had absorbed it when rubbed on the skin. 2. The drugs infused in oil have yielded their virtue, it is time to remove it from the fire. ஆறுகக்கிப்பாய்கிறது. The river overflows. கக்கக்கொடுக்க, inf. To pamper, surfeit one (spoken in reproach). கக்குவிக்க, inf. To be importunate for any thing due, to dun. கக்குவான், s. A disease. the chincough, whooping cough, குக்கல்நோய். கக்கல், v. noun. Vomiting, சத்தி செய்கை. 2. (s.) Any thing ejected from the mouth, சத்தி. நெல்லெல்லாங்கக்கலும்விக்கலுமாயிருக்கிறது. . . . The rice-ears are all shot forth and shooting forth. கக்கல்நோய், s. To ache--as with colic, dysentery, &c.; to have pain as the leg from walking; the shoulders or head from carrying a load; the mouth from speaking; the arm from writing, &c., உளைய. 3. To be seasoned too highly, or otherwise spoiled--as curry, commonly, கடுகடுக்க. 4. (p.) To be like, to resemble, ஒக்க. 5. To be in doubt, or uncertainty, to hesitate, ஐயுற. 6. To be angry, impatient, fretful, கோபிக்க. 7. To pass swiftly, விரைய. கடுத்தபின். When (the king) suspects. (குறள்.) கடுத்துப்போனதண்ணீர். Bad water, water unpleasant to the taste. அடுத்ததுகாட்டும்பளிங்கேபோல்நெஞ்சங்கடுத்ததுகா ட்டுமுகம். The face indicates the resentment of the heart, as the mirror reflects the shape of things placed before it. ஊமன்கண்ணிலாதவற்குரைத்தலுங்காண்டலுங்கடுக் கும். It is as if a blind man saw a thing which a dumb man told him to look at. கடுவரைநீரிற்கடுத்துவரக்கண்டு. Seeing it coming as rapidly as the impetuous mountain torrent-- (வெண்பாமாலை.) கடுத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak harshly. கடுப்ப, inf. Used as a particle of comparison--as பிள்ளைகடுப்பப்பிணம்பிறங்க, the bodies (of those who fell in battle) appeared (to move their dying limbs) like infants. (வெண்பா.) கடுத்தல், v. noun. The fire by which the world will finally be consumed. கடையன், s. A man of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோன். கடையாகெதுகை, s. A rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையாட்டம், s. [prov.] Lingering in disease, excessive suffering from disease, வருத்தம். 2. Vexation, teasing, imminence, trouble, annoyance, உலைவு, lit. mean work. கடையாட்டப்பட, inf. To drudge, to be employed in mean work. 2. To linger in disease, suffer exceedingly, வ ருந்த. 3. To be vexed. harassed. &c.-as a nurse by troublesome children, உ லைய. கடையாணி, s. A linch-pin, அச் சாணி. 2. A peg or pin used to keep a tenon in a mortise, or for any similar purpose, பூட்டாணி. கடையாந்தரம்--கடையீறு, s. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A shop where commodities of various kinds are sold. மளிகைக்கடை, s. A wholesale ware-house. காசுக்கடை, s. An exchange. அடிக்கடை, s. The first shop in a market-street. மருந்துக்கடை, s. An apothecary's shop. கசாய்க்கடை, s. (Tel.) A butcher's shop. சாராயக்கடை, s. An arrack shop. கீரைக்கடை, s. A green-grocer's shop. சவுளிக்கடை, s. A cloth-merchant's shop. விரற்கடை, s. krṇm (p. 96) s. Tumbling heels-overhead-as an art, gambling, தலைகீழாயுருளுதல். 2. A variety in dramatic action, கூத்தின்விகற் பம். 3. (p.) Actions, moral actions, rites, நற்கிரியை. 13. Astrological or astronomical calculation, கணி தம். Wils. p. 191.KARAN'A. கரணம்போட, inf. To tumble, to play at gambols. 2. To solicit very earnestly-as a child, to go to play, &c. 3. To use all possible means, to take the utmost pains. கரணவாசனை--கரணவாதனை, s. kuṭi (p. 116) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To drink, to take drink, பருக. 2. To inhale, உறிஞ்ச. 3. To tipple, to guzzle, to drink toddy or arrack, to drink to excess, மதுவுண்ண. 4. To suck--as infants or other young creatures, முலையுண்ண. 5. To devour, to quaff, மண்ட. 6. To take or swallow-as liquid medicines, &c., மருந்துகுடிக்க. 7. (fig.) To absorb, to imbibe, உட்கொள்ள. 8. To smoke--as tobacco, &c. உயிர்குடித்தன்றிநில்லா. Not stopping except to drink the lives of those around. குடியாதவீடுவிடியாது. No tippler is content unless he drinks. குடிவெறிஅடிபடத்தீரும். Flogging is a sure remedy for intoxication. நல்லபால்குடித்துவளர்ந்தவன். One who has been virtuously brought up. நிலந்தண்ணீரைக்குடித்துவிட்டது. The earth has drunk up or absorbed the water. பால்குடிக்கிறகுழந்தை. A child at the breast. குடிகாரன்--குடியன் s. A drunkard, a tippler, வெறியன். குடிமதம், s. Excitement of spirits by drinking. குடிவெறி, s. Intoxication by drinking, intemperance. குடிநீர், s. A decoction, a tincture, a medical infusion, a diet-drink. குடி, v. noun. koḷuttu (p. 147) கிறேன், கொளுத்தினேன், வேன், கொளுத்த, v. a. To kindle a light; to set on fire; to inflame, ignite. தீப்பற்றுவிக்க. 2. To instigate quarrels; to enkindle strife, சண்டைமூட்ட. 3. To play the lute or other stringed instrument, வீணைமுதலியன வாசிக்க. (p.) 4. To impart, instil, or infuse knowledge, to form the mind, அறிவுகொ ளுத்த. (p.) 5. To communicate or infuse virtue, savor, force, vigor, &c. சாரமற்ற, adj. Insipid, unsavory, unrelishable. 2. [in discourse.] Powerless, vapid, uninteresting, not sound, profound, forcible or impressive, &c., உருசி யற்ற. சாரமற்றவன், s. One without knowledge, learning, strength, vigor, property, merit of austerities, &c. சாரஞ்சுட, inf. To burn the milkhedge, prickly pear shrub, &c., to get their ashes for making lye. சாரத்தண்ணீர், s. Lye, காரத்தண்ணீர். சாரந்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle lye on clothes to whiten them. சாரத்தின்சத்துரு, s. An egg, from its neutralizing qualities, முட்டை. சாரக்கட்டை, s. A temporary wall, made use of in turning an arch. (R.) சாரத்துளை, s. Scaffold-holes in a building. சாரம்போட--சாரங்கட்ட, inf. To erect a scaffolding. (c.) சாரஸ்திரி, s. [Com. சோரஸ்திரி.] A vicious woman, an adulteress, விபசாரி. (p.) சாரத்துவம், s. Adultery, விபசாரம். சாரவறுதி--சாரவிறுதி, v. noun. [prov.] Lightness, slightness--as of a blow, a fall, &c.; [ex சாரம், strength, et அறுதி or இறுதி, wanting.] சாரவறுதியாய்ப்பட்டது. It hit him but slightly. சாரவாக்கியம், s. [in astron.] A table or any tabular number in it for counting the progress of the planets.--Note. The letters of the alphabet are substituted for numbers with a view to assist the memory and secure correctness in the tables. Compare சாவாக்கியம். நீதிசாரம், s. cuẕutti (p. 198) s. Deep sleep, profound repose, entire insensibility, one of the five அவஸ்தை, or states and stations of the soul in the body, that of deep sleep, அயர்ந்தநித் திரை. W. p. 938. [in the agama philosophy.] Foresight, anticipation, an intellectual, faculty that argues future events from present circumstances (as one of the seven அவத்தை of states and degrees of intellect).
