aṭukku (p. 8) s. A pile, row, tier, regular arrangement of goods or things, regular series, order, adjustment, system, வரி சை. 2. Orderly arrangements of subjects, the heads or topics in a writing or discourse, &c., எழுதுமுறை. 3. Four threads of yarn-in use among weavers, நூலடுக்கு. (c.) 4. Repetition of a phrase implying alarm, &c., with no other words intervening, அடுக்குச் சொல், as தீத்தீத்தீ, fire, fire, fire. (p.) 5. [in anat.] A layer, சிரேணி. அடுக்கடுக்காகவைக்க, inf. To arrange many things in rows, pile up in order. அடுக்கானகன்னி, s. A perfect woman. அடுக்குக்குலைக்க, inf. To put in disorder, as things in a row, pile, &c. அடுக்குக்குலைய, inf. To become disordered, deranged as business affairs, to go to decay as one's circumstances. அடுக்குத்தீபம், s. A kind of lamp in temples, used by the priests before the idol. அடுக்கத்தொடர், s. Repetition of a word or phrase two or three times, as, பாம்புபாம்பு. அடுக்குப்பண்ண, inf. To arrange, put in order, prepare. அடுக்குப்பார்க்க, inf. [prov.] To rehearse as stage players, previous to the public exhibition. (ஒத்திக்கைபார்க்க is used on the continent.) அடுக்குப்பானை, s. Pots arranged, especially in a cook-house, one upon another for various uses. அடுக்குமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmine, ஓர்மல்லிகை. அடுக்குமுள்ளி, s. A species of the முள்ளி shrub. அடுக்குமெத்தை, s. A couch with pillows placed one upon another. 2. A house built of different lofts, or stories. அடுக்கூமத்தை, s. A species of the ஊமத்தை. 13)

Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. [in grammar.] A class of particles comprising four kinds, viz.: 1. வேற்றுமையு ருபு, the particles which form the declensions. 2. வினையுருபு, those that form the inflections of verbs including three species, (a) விகுதி, verbal terminations. (b.) இடை நிலை, characteristics of tense and several other intervening particles in the formation of verbs, derivative nouns, &c. 3. சாரியை, auxiliary, component particles employed in the formation of the two classes of verbs. 4. ஒப்புருபு, particles of terms of comparison. 5. The relative participles, ஆகிய, ஆன, &c., affixed to nouns to make adjectives of them. உருபுத்தொகை, s. The suppression of the characteristics of the cases --as மரநுனி. உருபுப்புணர்ச்சி, s. Sand'hi--the union of the particles of inflections with nouns and pronouns, வேற்றுமையுருபுமுதலிய புணர்கை. உருபுமயக்கம், s. The use of one case for another--as the dative for the local ablative, &c., வேற்றுமையுருபுமாறுகை. அமுதம்பூவையைக்கிள்ளையையருத்தி. Feeding the minor and parrot with milk--here the objectives are used for the dative. (நைட.) உருபுமாலை, s. Declension of nouns. உருபுவிரி, s. The expression of the case--as மாத்தினுனி. உவமையுருபு, s. A particle of comparison--as மதிபோலுமுகம், face like the moon. சொல்லுருபு, s. The use of a word for a particle representing the case--as, தடிகொண்டடித்தான், He beat with a stick-here கொண்டு is used for ஆல்; அவனைக்காட் டிலும்வலியன். caraḷi (p. 166) s. Practising the seven tones or notes in music; also, the notes as disposed on the gamut, சத்தசுரப்பயிற்சி; [ex சரளம், order.] 2. [prov. improp. for] சளி.] Phlegm in the chest or throat, கோளை. (c.) சரளிகற்க--சரளிபழக--சரளிபாட, inf. To learn to sing by the gamut, to practise the tones in music. சரளிப்பதம், s. A lyric composed so as to have the notes of the gamut intervene between the different lines or forms of rhythm. சரளியலங்காரம், s. Exercising the voice in the seven tones with changes or varieties. (p.) சரளிக்கட்டு, v. noun. [prov.] A collection of phlegm in the chest, சளிக்கட்டு. 59) *

taṟ (p. 230) [prop. தத்.] A Sanscrit prefix in Tamil, the த் being changed to ற் before க், ச், ப். தற்காலம், s. The exact precise time of an action or occurrence, the expected time, the given time being, நிகழ்காலம். 3. Coincidence in time, அக்காலம். 4. [astron.] A given time for which calculation is made.--Note. This word is often used synonymously with தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், which see. தற்காலகிரகநிலை, s. Planetary positions at a given time. 2. The horoscope at the moment of birth. (A term used in nativities.) தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், s. The true longitude or position of a planet at a fixed time. தற்காலமத்திமம், s. The mean longitude at a given time. தற்காலவிலை, s. The price at the time. தற்காலவிலைப்படிதருவேன். I will give as the price may be at the time. தற்காலிக்க, inf. [in astron.] To determine longitude, &c., for a given time, to make a reduction in the elements of calculation of the time given or sought. தற்சணம்--தச்சணம்--தட்சணம்--த க்ஷணம், s. The very moment, not a moment intervening, உடனே. 2. The present moment, அந்தக்ஷணம். தற்சம்ம, s. Words from the Sanscrit used in Tamil, or any of the other cognate languages, without change--as கமலம், the letters of which are the same in Sanscrit and Tamil, but சக்தி in Tamil, is சக்தி in Sanscrit. (சது.) தற்சமயம், s. The particular juncture, the exact moment required, அச்சமயம். 2. The best opportunity, a special season or juncture, உற்றசமயம். தற்பதம், s. Deity, கடவுள். (சது.) தற்பரம்--தற்பரன், s. Absolute deity independent of agencies, assumed energies or operations; i. e. deity quiescent or the male principle in the deity, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். தற்பரை, s. The Sakti, or female principle of deity, சத்தி. 2. [in astron.] The thirtieth part of the twinkling of an eye, ஒருமாத்திரையில்முப்பதிலொன்று. தற்பவம், s. Words of Sanscrit origin which have undergone a change in their derivatives, வடமொழியிற்றிரிந்தசொல். 16)

Earth, பூமி--This word is commonly used நட்டு in combination--as நட்டாறு, the midst of the river, நட்டுச்சி, exactly the meridian. நடக்கடல், s. The mid-sea. நடுக்கடல்போனாலும்மறுப்படாமல்வரக்கடவீர்..... Even though you go into the midst of the sea, may you return without harm. நடுக்கட்ட, inf. [prov.] [com. பொதுக் கட்ட.] To sequester property. நடுக்கட்டு, s. A girdle. See under கட்டு. நடுக்கண்டம், s. The central portion of a continent. 2. The middle piece. நடுக்காரர், s. [prov.] Arbitrators, judges, umpires. நடுக்கிளி, s. The head player in a square. See under கிளி. நடுக்குடி, s. A house-hold in the midst of others, as being safer than if alone. 2. A family of midding circumstances, rank, &c. 3. [prov.] The head-family of a tribe or class. நடுக்கேட்க, inf. To hear a case in law. 2. To refer a case for decision. நடுக்கொண்டவீடு, s. [prov.] The middle house. (c.) நடுக்கொள்ளைக்காரன், s. One who plunders without regard to either party. நடுச்சாமம், s. Midnight, the middle watch from 12 o'clock till 3. நடுச்சுவர், s. A partition wall. நடுச்சொல்ல, inf. To decide a case, to mediate. நடுத்தரம், s. That which is middling. See தரம். நடுத்தலை, s. Crown of the head, உச்சி. நடுத்தீர்க்க, inf. To give, or pass judgement in case. நடுத்தீர்ப்பு--நடுத்தீர்வை, s. Judicial judgement. 2. The final judgement. 3. (fig.) Devine judgements--as pestilence and other calamities. நடுத்தீர்ப்புநாள், s. The judgement day. நடுத்தெரு, s. The middle street of a town or village. நடுநாள், s. The fourteenth or middle lunar asterism, சித்திரைநாள். (p.) நடுநியாயம், s. Equity, fair dealing, uprightness. 2. An incantation in the Saiva worship, the letters of which are mystic symbols of the forms of deity, or of the idol worshipped. The words are ஆம், ஊம், ஓம், சிவாயநம, in which ஆம், is அடி, basis; ஊம், is நடு, middle; ஓம், is முடி, top; சி, is சிவம், formless deity; வா, is சத்தி, the female principle, obscuration. நடுநிலைமை, s. Mediocrity, middle circumstances in life. நடுநிற்றல், v. noun. Becoming bail or security for one. (not the law term.) 2. Being upright, impartial. நடுநீதி, s. Impartial justice, equity, &c., as நடுநியாயம். நடுப்பகல், inf. Mid-day, noon. (c.) நடுப்படுத்த, inf. As நடுக்கட்ட. நடுப்பார்த்தல், v. noun. [prov.] Acting as an inspecter, commissioner, delegate, &c., by order of a court, மத்தியஸ்தம்பார் க்கை. நடுப்பெற, adv. [vul. நடுப்புற.] In the middle, in the centre; between, among. நடுப்பெறஉளுக்காரு. Sit in the middle. நடுப்பேச, inf. To plead, as நடுச் சொல்ல. நடுப்போர், s. [prov.] The midst of the work, operation, affair, &c., (lit.) the midst of the battle, இடைநடு. நடுமதியம்--நடுமத்தியானம், s. Noon, mid-day. நடுமையம், s. Middle, centre. 2. Zenith, meridian. நடுராசி, s. Middling in quality, size, &c., moderate, நடுத்தரம். நடுவதுபாதி, s. That which is in the midst, intermediate. நடுவதுபாதியிலேவந்தான். He came after the beginning of an affair when half of it was over; he came last. நடுவத்தசாமம்--நடுவத்தொருசாமம், s. [prov.] Midnight. நடுவயது, s. Middle age. நடுவறுத்தல், v. noun. Judging, as an umpire, deciding, discerning, perceiving, comprehending, ascertaining, discussing a controversy. நடுவறுத்தான், appel. n. The name of a plant, மூக்குரட்டைக்கொடி, Boerhavia diffusa, L. நடுவழி--நடுப்பாதை, s. Mid-way. நடுவன், s. Yama, the god of death, awarder of rewards and punishments, இயமன். (p.) 2. [prov.] A judge, arbiter, awarder, நியாயாதிபதி. நடுவாந்தரம், s. Midst of a work, process, time, &c., intermediate, மத்தி. (c.) நடுவாந்தரத்திலேபோய்விட்டான். He died prematurely. நடுவிரல், s. The middle finger. நடுவிலவன், s. [prov. நடுவிலான்.] A middle brother. நடுவிலே. In the midst, amidst. நடுவின்மை, s. Partiality, injustice, நீதிஇல்லாமை. (p.) நடுவீடு, s. The middle or interior of the house where the idol is kept. 2. An obscene expression, used in the south. நடுவீடுபெருவழியாயிற்று. The very interior of the house is become a public road; i. e., the family is ruined. நடுவீட்டுக்குநாயகமாய்வந்தான். He has come to lord it over us. நடுவீதி, s. The midst of the street. நடுவெலும்பு, s. The back bone, the spine, முதுகெலும்பு. (c.) நடுவெளி, s. Midst of an open plain, space, &c., இடைவெளி. 2. Immensity of space, a filled by the deity, பரவெளி. நடுவெளிக்கமலபாதம், s. The lotuslike feet of the deity, as filling all space. (p.) நடுவேபேச, inf. To interrupt one who speaks. 2. To speak as a mediator. நடுவேபொல்லாப்பாக, inf. To become detached in friendship.
