aḷ (p. 33) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To measure, fathom, expore, estimate, அளவுசெய்ய. 2. To apportion, mete out, measure out, பங்கிட. 3. To extend, reach, எட்ட. விசும்பளந்தாண்டுநின்றிடுஞ்சிகரியை. The turrets which reached to the sky. மரக்காலைப்பாய்ச்சியளக்கிறான். He measures thrusting in the marcal; i. e. into the heap. பறைவெட்டியளக்கிறான்--பறைதட்டியளக்கிறான். He measures by striking off the excess of the grain. ஐயனளந்தபடி. As God allots. அளக்கை--அளத்தல், v. noun. Measuring. அளபு, v. noun. Measurement, அ ளவு. 2. The lengthening of the sound of a letter, அளபெடை. அளபெடுக்க, inf. To lengthen a letter, whether vowel or consonant, by the insertion of another short letter or mute, as the case may be, for the sake of the poetry, and sometimes for euphony, as, கழூஉ for கழு; மாத்திரைமிக் கொலிக்க. அளபெடை, v. noun. The lengthening of a letter chiefly for the sake of the verse. There are two ways of doing this. 1. உயிரளபெடை, the addition of a short vowel to a long one, either in the beginning, middle, or end of a word--as ஈஇ கை, gift--for ஈகை; படாஅ கை, banner--for படாகை; and குழூஉ, multitude--for குழு. Again this is divided into இயற்கையளபெடை, and செயற்கையளபெ டை. 2. ஒற்றளபெடை, the lengthening of the mutes, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், வ், ய், ல், ள், and ஃ by being repeated twice either in the middle or end of a word when they are placed after one or two short syllables, as அரங்கம், முரஞ்ஞ்சு, மண்ண்ணு, அம்ம்பு, கொள்ள்க, விலஃஃகி. அளப்பம்--அளப்பு, v. noun. Measuring, அளக்கை. 2. (fig.) Fate, destiny, ஊழ். 3. Needless repetition, chatter, அலப்பு. 4. Expressing dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்கை. வனிதையரளப்பிலர், The damsels are without number. அளப்பளக்க, inf. To repeat, use needless repetitions, prate, chatter, அ லப்ப. 2. To complain, grumble, express dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்க. அளப்பன், s. [prop. அலப்பன்.] A babbler, prater, chatterer, வீணாகப்பேசு வோன். 13)

āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

uyir (p. 63) s. Life, soul, vitality, animal or vegetable life, சீவன். 2. Wind, காற்று. 3. A vowel, உயிரெழுத்து. 4. A living being, human, brute, or vegetable; an animal, ஓரறி வுயிர்முதலியசீவராசி. உயிருமுடலும்போல. As closely united as the soul and body. உயிர்போய்விட்டது. Life is gone. மன்னுயிர்க்கிரங்குகிறது. To be compassionate to other living creatures. உயிரடங்க, inf. To be in a state of insensibility, be in a swoon, to be suspended as the vital powers. உயிரடைய, inf. To revive, to be reanimated. உயிரளபு--உயிரளபெடை, s. The lengthening of a vowel in verse. See அளபெடை. உயிரறுதியும். Till the very end of life. உயிருதவி, s. Aid in a fatal juncture. 2. Aid by sacrificing life for another. உயிரெடுக்க, inf. To take away life. உயிரெழுத்து, s. A vowel, ஆவி. உயிரொடுங்க, inf. To be reduced as the powers before death, உயிரடங்க. 2. To die, சாவ. உயிரொளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To feign great weakness, sickness, inability, &c., in order to gain or effect an object, உயிர்மறைக்க. உயிரொளித்தகள்ளன், s. A cringing deceiver who though rich and strong makes pretensions to the contrary. உயிரோம்ப, inf. To support life, maintain, உயிர்காக்க. உயிர்கலக்க, inf. To revive, to be diffused--as life through the body in one that has been swooning, &c. 2. To reunite as the soul with the body in one restored to life. 3. (fig.) To be relieved from anxiety, &c. உயிர்குடிக்க, inf. To devour life, kill (a war term), also used of demons and ferocious deities, கொல்ல. உயிர்கொள்ள, inf. To take the life of an antagonist--as in battle, &c., உயிர்வாங்க. உயிர்க்கட்டை, s. The body, உடம்பு. உயிர்க்கணம், s. One of the four auspicious feet with which to begin a poem consisting of three நேர்--as தே, மாங், காய். 2. Vowels, உயிரெழுத்து. See கணம். உயிர்க்கருணேசம், s. The power of affection which is friendly to life, இச்சாசத்தி. உயிர்தருமருந்து, s. A restorative, a cordial, an elixir, மிருதசஞ்சீவினி. உயிர்த்தறுவாய், s. A great emergency, a critical juncture, extreme danger. See பிராணத்தறுவாய். உயிர்த்தானம், s. The seat of life, any vital part of the body, உயிர்நிலை. உயிர்த்துணை, s. A friend in extremity, ஆபத்திற்சகாயஞ்செய்பவன். 2. A friend dear as life, பிராணசிநேகன். 3. (p.) A wife, மனைவி. 4. A husband, கணவன். 5. God, கடவுள். உயிர்த்துணைவன், s. A very dear friend, உயிரையொத்தசிநேகன். 2. (p.) A husband, கண்வன். உயிர்த்துணைவி, s. A wife, மனைவி. 2. A lady's choice female friend, உயிர்த் தோழி. 3. Sarasvati the consort of Bramah, சரச்சுவதி. (p.) உயிர்த்தோழமை, s. Intimate friendship. உயிர்த்தோழன், s. A very trusty or bosom friend, a friend dear as life, பிராணசிநேகன். உயிர்த்தோழி, s. A lady's choice female companion, உயிர்ப்பாங்கி. உயிர்நிலை--உயிர்நிலையகம், s. The body as the seat of life, or station of the soul, உடல். 2. The vital parts essential to life, உயிர்த்தானம். உயிர்பிழைக்க--உயிருய்ய, inf. To survive a calamity, escape from, or live through a time of peril, தப்பிப்பிழைக்க. 2. To live, maintain life, subsist, உயிர் வாழ. உயிர்போக, inf. To expire, to die. உயிர்ப்பழி, s. The guilt of murder, உயிர்க்கொலை. 2. Vengeance, divine or human, persuing the murderer to death, regarded as the ghost of the murdered person, பிரமகத்தி. உயிர்ப்பிராணி, s. [vul.] A living creature, a brute, an inferior animal, சீவபிராணி. உயிர்மாய்க்க, inf. To destroy one's self, commit suicide, தன்னுயிரைப்போக்க. 2. To murder, kill, கொலைசெய்ய. உயிர்மெய்--உயிர்மெய்யெழுத்து, s. An animated consonant, a consonant combined with a vowel, ஓரெழுத்து; (lit.) a living body. உயிர்வாங்க, inf. To take away life, உயிரெடுக்க. உயிர்வாழ்க்கை, s. The enjoyment of life, சீவிக்கை. உயிர்வாழ, inf. To live--as men or brutes, சீவனோடிருக்க. 2. To enjoy life, be happy, prosperous, சுகமாகவாழ. உயிர்வேதனை, s. Causes of pain or distress, of which twelve are given, viz.: 1. அனல், heat or fire. 2. சீதம், cold. 3. அசனி, thunder-bolts. 4. புனல், water. 5. வாதம், wind. 6. ஆயுதம், weapons. 7. நஞ்சு, poisons. 8. மருந்து, medicines. 9. பசி, hunger. 1. தாகம், thirst. 11. பிணி, disease. 12. முனிவறாமை, malice. toṭai (p. 262) s. The thigh, in which sense, for butcher's meat, are, பெருந்தொடை, the upper part of the thigh; பின்னந்தொடை, a hind-quarter; முன்னந்தொடை, a fore-quarter of a sheep, &c. 2. Flower-garland. பூமாலை. 3. Bow-string, நாண். 4. Arrow, அம்பு. 5. Surrounding wall, bulwark, fortification, மதிற்சுற்று. 6. Block projecting from a wall to support a beam, சுவர்ப்புறத்து நீண்டவுத்திரம். 7. A bunch of flowers, பூங் கொத்து. 8. Verse, poetry, பாட்டு. 9. A series, train, connexion, succession, tissue, composition, commonly poetic, தொடர்ச்சி. 1. Rhyme in poetry, செய்யுளுறுப்பினொன் று, [ex தொடு. (v.)--There are five classes of rhyme, each containing eight verieties, and three single ones making fortythree in all. The five classes are: 1. மோ னை, மோனைத்தொடை, the rhyming of the initial letter of the line or foot through the stanza. The varieties of this class are: 1. அடிமோனை, முதன்மோனை, rhyming of the initial in the foot of each line. 2. இணைமோனை, of the first two feet in each line. 3. பொழிப்புமோனை, of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉமோனை, of the first and fourth foot. 5. கூழைமோனை, of all the feet in the line but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாய்மோனை, in every foot bu the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்மோனை, of all the feet but the penultimate. 8. முற்றுமோ னை, in every foot. II. இயைபு, இயைபுத்தொ டை, the rhyming of the last feet or letters in the lines. The varieties are: 1. அடிஇயைபு, முதலியைபு, rhyming of the last letter of the first foot in each line. 2. இணையியைபு, of the last letter of the first two feet. 3. பொழிப்பியைபு, of the last letter of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவியைபு, of the last letter in the first and fourth. 5. கூழை யியைபு, of the last letter in each foot except the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாயியைபு, in the last letter of every foot but the second. 7. கிழ்க்கதுவாயியைபு, of the last letter in every foot but the penultimate. 8. முற்றிழைபு, of the last letter in all the feet. III. எதுகை, எதுகைத்தொடை, rhyming of the second letter of every line in the stanza, comprising, 1. அடியெதுகை, முதலெதுகை, rhyming of the second letter of the first foot in each line. 2. இணையெதுகை, in the second letter of the two feet. 3. பொழிப்பெதுகை. that of every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவேதுகை, that of the first fourth. 5. கூழையெது கை, that of all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவா யெதுகை, that of all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாயெதுகை, that of all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றெதுகை, in the second letter of all the feet. IV. முரண், முரண்டொ டை, a kind of poetry consisting of words taken in contrast, or by antithesis, as இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவிந்தன்னவெண் மணலொருசிறை, by the side of the waters, dark as the wide spread nocturnal gloom, the white sand appeared, as if the moonlight had formed itself into heaps. Of this there are eight varieties, as 1. அடிமுரண்,முதன் முரண், contrast in the first foot of the lines, with one another. 2. இணைமுரண், that in the first two feet of the lines. 3. பொ ழிப்புமுரண், that in every other foot of the lines. 4. ஓரூஉமுரண், that in the first and fourth. 5. கூழைமுரண், contrast in all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாய்முரண், in all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்முரண், in all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றுமுரண், in all the feet. V. அளபெடைத்தொடை, rhyme formed by அளபெடை, or lengthening a letter for a verse, which are of eight varieties, as 1. அடி யளபெடை, முதலளபெடை, forming rhyme by அளபெடை, in the first of each line. 2. இணையளபெடை, in the first two feet. 3. பொ ழிப்பளபெடை in every other foot. 4. ஓரூஉவள பெடை, in the first and fourth. 5. கூழையள பெடை, in all but the last. 6. மேற்கதுவாயள பெடை, in all but the second. 7. கீழ்க்கது வாயளபெடை, in all but the penultimate. 8. முற்றளபெடை, in all the feet. VI. அந்தாதி, அந்தாதித்தொடை, rhyme by the occurrence of the last syllable, word or words in the stanza as the first of the sacceeding. VII. இரட்டைத்தொடை, by the repetition of the same in every foot through the line. VIII. செந்தொடை, poetry of numbers without rhyme, a kind of blank verse. For further particulars, see these in their respective places. தொடைமுறியஅடிக்க, inf. To break one's thigh in beating him. தொடைமேல்தொடைபோட, inf. To sit with one thigh on the other (deemed impolite.) தொடைதட்டிவெள்ளாழர், s. [in burlesque.] Barbers. தொடையகராதி, s. A division of சது ரகராதி, which see. தொடையிலேதட்ட, inf. To strike the thigh in token of bravery, defiance, admiration, surprize, &c. தொடையைநிமிண்ட, inf. To pinch the thigh as a punishment of a school boy, &c. தொடைவாழை, s. A tumor on the thigh near the groin. 2. [prov.] A shrub whose leaves are used to cure the tumor. தொடைவாழைப்புறப்பட்டுக்கிடக்கிறான். He lies sick of the thigh-tumor. தொடைவிகற்பம், s. The different species or varieties of rhyme. 46)

To be diminished, as water in a tank or river; to ebb, to flow back to the sea, வற்ற. 3. To lengthen, to become long, நீள. ஆறுஒருமுழம்வடிந்தது. The river is fallen a cubit. புண்ணிலேசீவடிகிறது. Matter comes from the ulcer. வடிகாது--வடிந்தகாது, s. [also வடிசற் காது.] Ears with the perforation much enlarged, தொங்குசெவி. வடிகை, v. noun. Ebbing of the tide, வற்றுகை. 2. Dropping of tears, blood, &c., ஒழுகுகை. வடிசல்--வடிதல்--வடியல், v. noun. Ebbing; decreasing, வற்றல். 2. Being long, lengthening, நீளம். (சது.) வடிவு, v. noun. The ebb, as வடிசல், 2.
