uyr (p. 63) --உயரு, கிறேன், உயர்ந்தேன், வேன், உயர, v. n. To rise, become high, tall, elevated, to grow, or rise high, வளர. 2. To rise as water; to ascend as a paper kite; to rise towards the meridian as a heavenly body, மேலெழ. 3. To become proud, vain, self-conceited, consequential, to be elated, இறுமாக்க. 4. To be excellent, exalted, eminent, dignified, மேன்மையுற. In neuter forms it is found chiefly in the past tense. 5. To be raised or lifted up, உன்ன தப்பட. உயரப்பறந்தாலுமூர்க்குருவிபருந்தாமோ? Though it soars high, will the sparrow become a hawk? ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்மூவருக்கும். The study of the vedas belongs to the three superior castes. வரம்புயரநீருயருநீருயரநெல்லுயருநெல்லுயரக்குடி யுயருங்குடியுயரமுடியுயரும். As the banks are raised, the water will rise, as the water increases, so will the rice, rice will increase population, and as the population increases, so will the dignity of the crown. உயரநினைப்பவன்தாழ்வான். uyrttu (p. 63) கிறேன், உயர்த்தினேன், வேன், உயர்த்த, v. a. To lift up, elevate, raise higher--as a wall in building, a heap, &c., உயரச்செய்ய. 2. To raise (the price), increase (expenditure), அதிகப்படுத்த. 3. To promote to higher office, to make great, to exalt, ennoble, dignify, aggrandize, மேலாக்க. 4. To extol, magnify, praise, கனப்படுத்த. 5. To receive one with honors, show respect, treat in a dignified manner, உபசரிக்க. 6. To raise the voice in singing, speaking, &c., to lift up the heart, affections, thoughts, &c., எழுப்ப. 7. To raise an arm, a leg, a weapon, &c., to raise the head above water, raise the head when in a lying posture, மேலெடுக்க. 8. To assume, elevate one's self, make much of one's powers, பெருமைப்படுத்த.--Note. Instances of உயர்த் தல், in the past are found in verse, but in the present and future it seems to be seldom or never found. நரகந்தன்படத்தையுயர்த்திக்காட்டும். The cobra raises its hood and exhibits it. சேவலையுயரியதேவநாயகன். The leader of the gods (skanda) who has exalted the cock as his banner. வலனுயர்த்தவண்ணலஞ்சேல். The lofty carp banner which has exalted victory to view. (நைடதம்.) உயர்த்திப்பேச, inf. To dignify, speak of one with high respect. உயர்த்தியாய்க்கேட்க, inf. To bid high in an auction, &c. 16)

eḥku (p. 73) கிறது, எஃகினது, ம், எஃக, v. n. To be elastic, stretchable, நெகிழ. 2. To become stretched or drawn out, நீள. 3. To become unfastened, unclasped, unloosed, &c., அவிழ. 4. To spring back, rebound--as a bent bow, bamboo, &c., எதிர் தாக்க. 5. To be lifted, drawn, or carried-as by a well beam, தாழ்ந்தெழும்ப. 6. eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. He will not let me begin; spoken figuratively in allusion to the discharge of arrows. எடுப்பாரும் பிடிப்பாருமுண்டானாலிளைப்புந்தவிப்பும் மெத்தத்தோன்றும். Where there are many attendants much trouble is experienced. பிள்ளைக்குமூக்கெடுக்க. To raise or force out the upper part of the nose of an infant--as a nurse by pressing with two fingers. அரசனாலயமெடுத்தான். The king has built a temple. இந்தப்பாரமெடுக்கமாட்டேன். I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A docile, tractable, yielding person; one who has no opinion of his own. எடுத்துக்கட்ட, inf. To fabricate, invent. எடுத்துக்கட்டு, v. noun. Fabrication, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. Invention--as of a word. எடுத்துக்காட்டல், v. noun. An author's adducing examples, illustrations, &c. (See உத்தி.) 2. Citing, quoting, &c. எடுத்துக்காட்டு, s. An example, illustration, உதாரணம். எடுத்துக்கைநீட்ட, inf. To help one--as a waiter, or attendant. எடுத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To take to one's self, தனக்காகக்கொள்ள. 2. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To enter upon an occupation. 2. To suspend one from office. பூவெடுக்க, inf. To gather flowers. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To dig a well. 2. He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். Increasing heat or sunshine as the sun rises towards the meridian, காலைவெய்யில்--opp. இறங்குவெய் யில். ஏறெடுக்க, inf. To lift up the head, eyes, &c., மேலெடுக்க. 82)

ēṟṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏற்றினேன், வேன், ஏற்ற, v. a. To raise, hoist, lift up, எழுப்ப. 2. to load a cart, &c.; to ship; to put upon a shelf, &c., set a load on one's head, set up, pile up, stow, பாரமேற்ற. 3. To put in, cause to enter, insert, drive in--as a nail, உள்ளேற்ற. 4. (p.) To teach, instruct, உ ணர்த்த. மச்சிலேற்றியேணியைவாங்கிவிட்டான். He has put me in the loft, and taken away the ladder; i. e. he has induced me to engage in the business and then deserted me. நிறைந்ததண்ணளியினனென்பாரதனைக்குடைமேலேற் றிமுழுமதிமுக்குடையென்றார். he said, the triple, full-moon-like umbrellas--thus transferring the benignant qualities of the possessor to the umbrella. ஐ. The diphthong ai, the ninth vowel, ஒன்பதாமுயிர். It may be written for அய் or vice versa. In the beginning and middle of a word, when followed by ச, ஞ், or ய, ஐ is sometimes substituted for அ--as அரைசன் for அரசன்; மைஞ்சு for மஞ்சு; ஆலையம் for ஆலயம்; மையல் for மயல். Words beginning with ஐ often take அய் instead--as அய்ய ன் for ஐயன்; அய்யோ for ஐயோ, &c. 2. The form of the second or accusative case, இரண் டனுருபு--as அவனை, him. 3. A termination of the second pers. sing. முன்னிலையொருமைவி குதி--as பெரியை, thou art great; வந்தனை, thou art come. 4. A termination of nouns chiefly feminine, பெயர்விகுதி--as தெரிவை, a woman; தந்தை, a father. 5. An expletive இதையதின்மேலேற்றிச்சொல்லலாம். This is applicable to that. தன்வருத்தத்தைமாலைப்பொழுதின்மேலேற்றி. Ascribing her sufferings to the evening twilight. குற்றத்தையென்மேலேற்றப்பார்தான். He sought to fix the blame on me. ஏற்றிப்போட--ஏற்றிவிட inf. To transport, to export goods. ஏற்றுதுறை, s. Place of exportation or embarkation, துறைமுகம். ஏற்றுமதி, s. Export. 2. Cargo. ஏற்றுமதிச்செலவு, s. Shipping expenses. ஏற்றுமதிபண்ண, inf. To export a cargo. விளக்கேற்ற, inf. To set up, to place a lamp, to light a candle. குடியேற்ற, inf. ōngku (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓங்கினேன், வேன், ஓங்க, v. a. To lift up, raise the arm, a weapon, a pestle, கையோங்க. 2. v. n. To grow high, rise above others, above the level; to be lofty--as a building, a mountain, a tree; to shoot forth, rise--as a flame, உயர. 3. To mount, soar, எழும்ப. 4. To rise to the surface--as planted rice when flooded, எழ. 5. To be exalted, dignified, eminent, பெருமையுற. 6. To improve, increase in wealth, renown, learning, &c.; to flourish, prosper, increase in size, &c., அதிகரிக்க. ஓங்கியவொள்வாள். The up-lifted glittering sword. நெஞ்சோங்குபரத்துற்றோர். Those whose hearts are placed on the Supreme God. (நன்னெறி.) துக்கசமுத்திரத்திலேயோங்குகிறான். He rises above the waves in the sea of sorrow. ஓங்கிப்பார்க்க, inf. To stand on tip-toe and look. ஓங்கிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To rise and catch, either by becoming erect, or standing on tip-toe, or jumping. ஓங்கியசெல்வம், s. Abounding wealth. பிறன்மனைநோக்காதபேராண்மைசான்றோர்க்கறனொ ன்றோவான்றவொழுக்கு. The magnanimity which disdains to look on another's wife, is it an act of propriety merely? It is exalted virtue. ōccu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓச்சினேன், வேன், ஓச்ச, v. a. To cast away, throw, discharge a weapon, bow, &c., எறிய. 2. To cause to go, to ride, govern, செலுத்த. 3. To drive away, chase, scare away, ஓட்ட. 4. The mode of using the hands in dancing which are of twenty-three kinds, viz.: 1. பதாகை, stretching all the five fingers keeping them close and straight. 2. திரிபதாகை, bending the thumb and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 3. பிறை, keeping the other four fingers close together separately from the thumb. 4. சர்ப்பசிரம், keeping the palm of the hand curved. 5. சாளையம், bending the little finger and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 6. மான்றலை, keeping the middle three fing ers down and lifting the other two up. 7. பதுமகோசரம், keeping up the palm of the hand opened having the fingers bent. 8. சிலீமுகம், keeping the tip of the forefinger at the bottom of the thumb and the tips of each of the rest at the middle of the adjoining finger. 9. முட்டி, folding all the four fingers and keeping the thumb above the middle finger. 1. சிக ரம், folding all the other fingers and keeping the thumb stretched. 11. சூசி, stretching the pointing finger and keeping the thumb curved while the others are folded. 12. கபித்தம், keeping the tips of the thumb and fore-finger close together and the other folded. 13. கடகம், keeping the tips of the thumb and forefinger together, the middle finger bent and the rest stretched. 14. சந்தங்கிஷம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, stretching the rest. 15. அஞ்சவாய், keeping the ringfinger and little finger separately stretched up and keeping the tips of the rest together. 16. முகிழ், keeping the tips of all the fingers together. 17. திரிலிங்கம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, the rest curved and the wrist a little bent. 18. மிருகசிரம், stretching up the pointing finger and the little finger and keeping the rest close together. 19. சிங்கநகம், keeping up the palm of the hand having the fingers almost folded. 2. கூர்மம், stretching up the middle finger while the others are bent down. 21. பூரணம், stretching all the five fingers straight not being close together. 22. மென்னிலை, bending the thumb and stretching up the rest. 23. முன்னதம், separating the fore-finger from the rest. கரவாளம், s. kiḷppu (p. 111) கிறேன், கிளப்பினேன், வேன், கி ளப்ப, v. a. To detach or raise up some heavy thing; to raise up one side of a thing; to disengage, to dislodge, to displace, எழுப்ப. 2. To dig up, to heave or lift up, பூமியின்கீழிருப்பதைக்கிளப்ப. 3. To excite, to induce fever, heat, &c., சுரமுதலிய வற்றைஎழுப்ப. 4. To rouse, animate, urge, ஏவிவிட. 5. To instigate, to rouse persons or things that are still, மூட்டிவிட. 6. To agitate, to discuss, கதைகிளப்ப. 7. [prov.] To raise a wall in building, to erect, to cause to grow higher, சுவர்முதலியகிளப்ப. கிளப்பிவிட, inf. To excite, to instigate, to stir up. கல்லுக்கிளப்ப, inf. To dig up stones. காந்தியைக்கிளப்ப--காந்தலைக்கிளப்ப, inf. [vul.] To excite heat latent in the body--as by cold food, &c. கொதியைக்கிளப்பிவிட, inf. [vul.] To excite heat, fever, &c., in the system. 2. To increase heat in the ground--as a slight shower, &c. கோபத்தைக்கிளப்ப--எரிச்சலைக்கிளப்ப, inf. To stir up anger. தலைகிளப்ப--தலையைக்கிளப்ப, inf. To look, to raise one's head; to lift up the head--as one sick, &c. 2. fig. To begin to signalize one's self. பத்தியைக்கிளப்ப, inf. To excite devotion in one. பேரைக்கிளப்ப, inf. To get a name, to promote one's celebrity, or notoriety; to make illustrious. வாலைக்கிளப்ப, inf. To raise the tail, --as a dog, a calf, &c. வாதபித்தசிலேட்டுமங்களைக்கிளப்ப, inf. To excite the three humors, வாதம், பித்தம் and சிலேட்டுமம் of the system. 52)

To be streaked. கீற்றன், s. [prov.] Striped cloth--as கீற்றன்புடைவை. கீற்றுநாமக்காரன், s. A worshipper of Vishnu as having the நாமம் or tridental mark on his forehead. கீற்றாய்வெடித்திருக்க, inf. To have clifts, chinks or chaps--as in timber. கீற்றுக்கால், s. A chapped foot. See under கால், s. கீற்றுமுடைய--கீற்றுப்பின்ன, inf. To plait or braid cocoanut-leaves. தென்னங்கீற்று, s.
