akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். cāṇ (p. 174) s. A span of twelve fingers' breadth, or form the end of the thumb to the end of the little finger extended, ஓரளவு. (c.) சாண்கும்பி--சாண்வயிறு, s. The abdomen a span long. சாண்வயிற்றுக்குப்பாடுபட, inf. To labor for the cravings of the belly a span long. சாண்வயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a mere livelihood, (lit.) to nourish a span of belly. சாண்சீலை, s. [loc.] The fore-lap, the cloth covering the privy parts. சாணளப்பான்--சாணளந்தான்பூச்சி, s. A kind of insect that moves forward by its head and tail, measuring its length at every movement. சாணேற முழஞ்சறுக்க. To climb a span up and slide a cubit down--spoken of slight advance, profit, &c., followed by great decrease. சாணோவயிறு சரீரமெல்லாம்வயிறோ. Is his belly a span long, or is he all belly-spoken of one who supports himself dishonorably. எறும்புந்தன்கையாலெண்சாண். The ant measures eight of its own spans, i. e., no one is to be despised for his low condition or estate. 93)

cīviyam (p. 191) s. Life, existence, state of being, உயிரோடிருக்கை. 2. Living, livelihood, means of subsistence, சீவனம். 3. The season of life, வாழ்நாள். 4. The enjoyment of life, ஆத்துமானுபவம். (Sans. Jeevya.) சீவியநாள்மட்டும். While life lasts; as long as we live. இச்சீவியம், s. The present life, the present state. மறுசீவியம்--வருஞ்சீவியம், s. The other life, any future state of being. நற்சீவியம், s. A good or virtuous life. 38) *

tḷmpu (p. 229) கிறேன், தளம்பினேன், வேன், தளம்ப, v. n. To wabble, flap, fluctuate, as water in a moving vessel, அலம்ப. 2. To be unsteady as a water pot floating; to wabble, as a spinning top; to together, stagger with the weight of a load, to shake, as the top of a car when drawn; to move as drops of water on a leaf, தள்ளாட. 3. To vacillate, or be unsteady--as a load, அசைய. 4. To fluctuate, waver, hesitate, அலைய. 5. To be in straits for a livelihood, be agitated, முட்டுப்பட. 6. To move, to swerve, நிலைகுலைய. (c.)*********** அவனைத்தளம்பவிடார்கள். They will not let him swerve, to the other party, &c.; i. e. will not suffer him to want. நிறைகுடம்தளம்பாது. The water in a full jar does not shake. அவன் நெஞ்சு தாமரையிலைத்தண்ணீர்போல்தளம்பு கிறது. His heart wavers as the waterdrops upon a lotus leaf. தளம்பியூற்றுண்ண, inf. To spill, as water from a vessel. (c.) தளம்பல், v. noun. Wavering, wabbling, as water, or a vessel. (c.) தான்தளம்பல் பிறருக்கூன்றுகோல். He is wavering himself, but a staff to others. [prov.] 33)

tāṉ (p. 236) The reciprocal pronoun, himself, herself, itself, the genitive being தன்; in composition sometimes தற். 2. One's self. 3. An emphatic or intensive particle, signifying indeed, really, certainly, தேற் றச்சொல்; as அப்படித்தான், it is so. (c.) 4. An expletive, or அசைச்சொல் suffixed to any noun or pronoun of any person, and declined instead of it, as நிலந்தனைக்கொத்தினான், he dug the earth. 5. Personal identity, சுயம். (p.)--Note. According to the Agamas, the soul is the person or being, and the body and mind with their powers and faculties, are merely adventitious; being the fruit of actions, &c. தானேவளர்ந்துதவத்தால்கொடியெடுத்தவன். One who has grown great and become famous of himself through meritorious austerities; often used of one who has risen by the kindness of another, but forgotten his benefactor. தானொருவனுமேதனியாகவந்தான். He only came, he came alone. தான்சாகாமருந்துதின்னலாமா. May any one take medicine to kill himself? தானுள்ளபோதுலோகம். The world is one's while he lives. தானாக்கனியாததுதடிகொண்டடித்தால்கனியுமா. Will a fruit, not ripening of itself, ripen by being beaten with a stick? தானுந்தலைவனும். The soul and God. நீதான். You yourself, you certainly. அவன்றன்னைக்கண்டேன். I saw him. (p.) அவன்றான். He himself; he certainly, truly, really. தானாக, inf. To be absolute, unique, self-existent, independent, தானாயிருக்க; applicable to the deity. 2. To be assimilated, தன்வண்ணமாக. தானாக, [adverbial.] Of his, her, or its own accord; spontaneously, voluntarily. 2. Of or by himself, herself, itself. தானாக்குதல், v. noun. Assimilating a person or thing to one's self, itself, &c., தன்வண்ணமாக்குதல். தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language, from other authors, one of thirty-two உத்தி. தானேயானவன்--தான்தோன்றி, appel. n. The self-existent, the deity, கடவுள். தான்பிழைக்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To regard or consult one's own safety, to be careful not to betray, involve or jeopardize one's self. 2. To seek one's own interests, livelihood, prosperity. 23)

pl (p. 301) adj. Many, several, diverse, sundry, manifold, numerous, &c., ஒன்றல்லன. [Compare Sa. Bahula.]-- In combin. பல், பற், பன், as பல்பொருள், பற்பல, பன்மணி. பலதுளிபெருவெள்ளம். Many drops make a great flood; i. e. many small sums make a great amount. பலதீட்டுக்கொருமுழுக்குப்போடுகிறது. One bathing for various pollutions; i. e. many difficulties settled at once. பலகலப்பு--பலகலவை, s., Mixture of diverse things, miscellany. பலகலப்பு ஒருசாதி. A caste of mongrels; lit. several mixtures in one caste. பலகாயம், s. Different spices. பலகாரியம், s. Various things or affairs. பலகாலம், s. Many days, a long time. பலகாலும். Various times, frequently, often. பலகோசம், s. Land registered in the names of several. (Govt. usage.) பலசந்தமாலை, s. A poetic treatise containing one hundred stanzas, in which the verses are not uniform, but various and diverse, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். பலசம்பத்து, s. Various acquisitions, various kinds of wealth. பலசம்பாரம், s. Spices. 2. Different spices. பலசரக்கு, s. Various commodities, grocery, drugs or spices. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A grocer's shop. See கடை. பலசோலி, s. Many business. பலதரம், s. Sundry times, often. 2 Various kinds. பலதாரம், s. Plurality of wives, பல மனைவி. பலதிரட்டு, s. A compilation, as கலம் பகம். பலதிரட்டுவாகடம், s. A medical compilation. பலதுறை, s. (lit.) Many ways, பல வழி. 2. (fig.) Sundry affairs, ways, &c.,நர்னாபேதம். பலதுறைப்பட்டு விரிந்தசெய்யுள். An extensive poem consisting of a great variety of themes. பலதுறையிலும் நடக்கிறார்கள். They are conducting themselves in various ways, religious or other. பலநாட்செய்தி, s. Reports, narrations, annals, chronicles of olden time, written or spoken. See நாள். பலபட, inf. To become many, to be divided into many parts, to ramify. 2. To be various, diversified, multiform, பலவிதப்பட. 3. To be divided as a party into factions. பலபட்டடை, s. People of various castes. See பட்டடை. பலபட்டறை, s. As பலபட்டடை. 2. Diverse kinds of business, பலதொழில்,--Note. With உம், it signifies, great variety of suffering. &c. வயிறுவளர்க்கப் பலபாடும் படவேணும். It is necessary to make various exertions to procure a livelihood. பலபாடும்பட்டுத்தேறியிருக்கிறேன்.I am now at last quite easy and tranquil, after so many troubles and hardships. பலபெயர்த்திரிசொல், s.. Different obscure names denoting an object. பலபொருளொருசொல், s. A word with different meanings. பலபொருள்குறித்த ஓரிடைத்திரிசொல், s. As பலமுறை. பலவிதம், s. Multiformity, multifariousness, நரனாவகை. பலவினீட்டம், s. A collection of many things. (p.) பலவினைத்திரிசொல், s. A difficult verb expressing different subjects,பலவகை வினைத்திரிசொல். பலவின்கூட்டத்தற்கிழமை, s. An inseparable quality relating to a noun of multitude--as படையதுதொகுதி. 2.
