irṇṭu (p. 49) s. and adj. Two, இரண்டா மெண்.-- As an adjective prefix, it often becomes இரு and ஈர், double, இரட்டிப்பான-as இருநிறம், two colors, a double color; ஈர லகு, two syllables. See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். I will give double the quantity. பத்திரட்டி, s. Twice ten. இரட்டிக்க, inf. To double, repeat, reiterate, இரட்ட. 2. (c.) To return --as a disease, வியாதிமக்களிக்க. 3. To plough the second time, always crosswise, இரண்டாமுறையுழ. 4. To differ from, be discrepant, &c., வேறுபட. 5. To disagree--as different kinds of food eaten at once, to be indigested, போசனம் ஒவ்வா திருக்க. இந்தச்சாட்சியந்தச்சாட்சிக்கிரட்டிக்கிறது. This evidence differs from the other. மகரமிரட்டித்தது. Double-threaded cloth, either coarse or fine, sack-cloth, ஓர்வ கைச்சீலை. இரட்டுப்பை, s. A sack made of coarse cloth. இரட்டுறமொழிய, inf. To state a rule so that it may comprise another, the one plainly apparent, the other to be made out by study; or the use of terms of double meaning either of which serves to make good sense, though the ideas will be wholly different; or the use of terms by which one thing is employed and another implied. See உத்தி. (p.) இரட்டை, s. Two things naturally conjoined--as a double fruit, leaf, &c.; twins, two things alike, இரண்டொன் றானது. 2. (p.) Gemini in the zodiac, two females, மிதுனராசி. 3. Even, even numbers--opposed to ஒற்றை, இரட்டையெண்-as 6, 8, 24, &c. 4. A couple, tow, சேரடு. 5. A female songster, பாடுவிச்சி. ஒற்றையிரட்டைபிடித்தல். A kind of play, playing at odd and even. இரட்டைக்கிளவி, s. Double words imitating certain sounds, ஒலிக்கு றிப்பில்வருமிரட்டைமொழி--as சளசளவெனமழை த்தாரைகான்றன. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the same word is repeated through the line, (see தொடை)--as ஒக் குமே யொக்குமே யொக்குமே யொக்கும் விளக்கினு ட்சீறெரியொக்குமே யொக்கும் குளக்கொட்டிப்பூவி னிறம், the color of the flower of the water-plant கொட்டி, resembles the delicate flame of the lamp. (p.) இரட்டைப்படவெண்ண, inf. To count even, making a series increasing by a common ratio--as 2, 4, 6, &c. இரட்டைப்பாக்கு, s. An arecanut with two eyes producing, if planted, two trees. இரட்டைப்பிள்ளை, s. Twins. 2. [prov.] A double young areca or cocoa-nut tree. இரட்டைப்புரிக்கயிறு, s. A rope or string made of two strands. இரட்டைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting of twenty verses of வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, or நேரிசைவெண்பா and ஆசி ரியவிருத்தம், and composed according to the rules of அந்தாதி. See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இரண்டகம், s. Treachery, perfidy, duplicity, dissimulation, double-dealing, துரோகம். (c.) இரண்டகம்நினைக்க, inf. To frame a treacherous design. இரண்டகம்பண்ண, inf. To betray, act treacherously, perfidiously. இரண்டகவாதி, s. A treacherous person, an insincere friend, துரோகி. இரண்டன்மை, s. Sameness, (lit.) being not two--as அத்துவைதம், which see. இரண்டாந்தரம், s. Secondary kind or class--as of cloth, tobacco, &c. 2. The second time. இரண்டாம்பட்சம், s. Second or secondary class, kind, &c., not the most approved. இரண்டாம்பாட்டன், s. A great grand-father, மூதாதை. இரண்டாவது, s. That which is the second. 2. adv. Secondly. இரண்டுக்குப்போக, inf. [vul.] To go to stool, (usage of children.) இரண்டுக்குற்றது, s. [vul.] The dusk of the evening, used for an inauspicious or untimely season, &c. இரண்டுங்கெட்டவன், s. An indifferent man, neither good nor bad. இரண்டுசொல்ல, inf. To evade, refuse, give an indirect or evasive answer. இரண்டுசெய்ய, inf. To act perfidiously. 2. To act against one's command, to behave disobediently. இரண்டுநினைக்க, inf. To be hypocritical, to meditate treachery under a show of honesty. இரண்டுபட, inf. To vary from, differ in the issue or event, disagree, dissent, become opposed, வேறுபட. 2. To be discrepant, appear discordant, &c., ஒற்றுமையின்றாக. 3. To be doubtful, ஐயுற. இரண்டுபடுத்த, inf. To disjoin, disunite, cause to differ, sow dissension. இரண்டுபண்ண, inf. (p.) இருசுடர்த்தோற்றம், s. One of the divisions of பெருங்காப்பியம், சூரியசந்திரோத யங்களின்வருணனை. (p.) இருசுழி, s. A double curl as a mark. இருசுழியிருந்துண்டாலுமுண்ணும் இரந்துண்டா லுமுண்ணும். A person of a double curl may live in luxury or be reduced to beggary. இருதலைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand burning at both ends. ஒருதலைக்கொள்ளிநடுவிலெறும்பைப்போலானே ன். I am like an ant between two fires; i. e. I am in straits. இருதலைப்பட்சி, s. A kind of bird fabled to have two heads. இருதலைமணியன், s. A snake said to have two heads--one at each end. இருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. Two-edged sword or knife. இருதிணை, s. The two classes உயர்திணை and அஃறிணை into which Tamil nouns are divided. (See திணை.) 2. [in poetry.] Repetition of a foot or feet in two lines with different meanings, வந்தசொல்லேயிரண்டடி யினும்வரப்பாடுவது. See மடக்கு. ஈரடிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெ ண்பா of two lines--the குறள்வெண்பா. (p.) ஈரடுக்கொலி, s. Reiterated words imitative of sound--as நெறுநெறென்றுமுறிந் தது, it broke with a reiterated crash; வண்டில்கடகடென்றோடிற்று, the carriage rolled along with a rattling noise. (p.) ஈரறம், s. The two kinds of அறம், or virtuous actions according to the shasters; viz.: இல்லறம், matrimony and its accompanying household virtues; and துறவறம், the virtues of ascetic practice. (p.) ஈரறிவுயிர், s. Beings that have the sense of feeling and tasting--as snails, shells, &c., பரிசமுஞ்சுவையுமறியும்நந்துமுதலிய செந்து. (p.) ஈராசிடைவெண்பா, s. A species of வெண்பா, with two ஆசு affixed to the end of the third foot of the second line. (p.) ஈராடி--ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] A changeable state of the wind and weather, previous to the change of monsoon, indicative of rain. 2. A calm, a lull, the failing of the wind at this season, காற்றினமைவு. 3. Fickleness, hesitation, fluctuation of mind, நிலையின்மை. இக்காரியத்திலென்மனமீராடிப்படுகின்றது. In this affair my mind wavers. ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] Two wives. ஈரி, s. A play of girls, two stones being taken up from the ground while a third is tossed in the air, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. (c.) ஈரிலைப்பயிர், s. A young shoot when two leaves appear. ஈரிழை, s. Double-thread used in some kinds of cloth--as in muslin. ஈரிழைச்சல்லா, s. A muslin whose warp consists of two untwisted threads. ஈரீற்றா, s. A cow that has had two calves. (p.) ஈருடல், s. [in mythology.] Beings possessing the form, in part, of two bodies--as Vishnu manifested in the form of man and lion, இருதன்மைத்தாயவுடல். (p.) ஈருயிர்க்காரி, s. iṟngku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறங்கினேன், வேன், இறங்க, v. n. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To disembark, get out of a boat, or from one boat into another of smaller size, கப்பலினின்றிறங்க. 5. To be taken down, unladed, unladen, disburdened, சாமானிறங்க. 6. To fall or sink into the appropriate place--as a post into its hole, to be driven home--as a nail, உள்ளிறங்க. 7. To sink--as a denser body, to settle to the bottom--as earth in water, water in oil, &c., அமிழ. 8. To arrive at a place other than one's home, to pitch, alight, encamp --as an army. to halt, பாளயமிறங்க. 9. To get into the right road, நேர்வழியிலிறங்க. 1. To be brought down or reduced, தாழ்வடைய. 11. To abate--as fever commencing with the head and descending to the extremities, சுரமிறங்க. 12. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. The subsiding of swelling, &c. from the head to the extremities, விக்கமிறங்கல். இறவு, v. noun. Lapse, passage, a place of descent, செல்கை. 5)

To stitch leaves together to be used instead of plates. இலைத்திரி, s. A roll of leaf inserted in the perforation of the ear to cure the sore occasioned by piercing. இலைநரம்பு, s. The fibre of a leaf. இலைபறிக்க, inf. To pluck off leaves. இலைப்பாசி, s. A kind of plant. See பாசி. இலைப்பொல்லம், s. [prov.] Sewing leaves together, இலைதைக்கை. 2. A piece of leaf, commonly plantain, to eat from, வாழையிலைத்துண்டு. இலைமூக்கரிகத்தி, s. A kind of knife for cutting the stem of the betelleaf, வெற்றிலைக்காம்பரிகத்தி. இலையறுக்க, inf. To cut off leaves. இலையுதிர்வு, s. The fall of leaves, இலைவிழுகை. 2. An ancient forest, முது காடு. இலைவாணிகம்--இலைவாணிபம், s. Cultivation of, and trade in vegetables. இலைவாணிபர், s. Sellers of betelleaf, vegetables, &c.--one of the eighteen குடிமக்கள். இலைத்தல்--இலையிலைத்தல், v. noun. Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. Deliverance from a state of suffering, indigence, &c., உய்வு. 3. The marriage of a destitute girl under favorable auspices, கன்னிகையீடேற்றம். ஈட்டுக்கீடு, s. Like for like, retaliation, requital. கடையீடு, s. Ground the lowest in value and assessment. தலையீடு, s. A very fruitful soil, known to be such by its aspect. 6)

To be strewed, scattered, poured out, &c., சிந்த. 3. To trickle or fall down--as rain or tears, சொரிய. 4. To be divested of, liberated from, கழல. (p.) நெஞ்சுகவாய்மலரன்னகண்ணீர்மல்க. umri (p. 62) --உமிரி, s. A kind of delicate, brittle herb, saltish in taste, growing in sandy soils which are occasionally overflowed by the sea. It is used for pickles. Salicornia Indica, L. There are various kinds--as காட்டுமரி, சிற்றுமரி, நிலவுமரி, பேருமரி, and நீருமரி. 2. A snail, நத்தை. உமரிக்காசு, s. Cowries, shells used as money. 68)

umi (p. 62) s. Husk, chaff, hull, bran, தானியங்களினுமி. (c.) உமிக்கரப்பான், s. A small kind of eruption especially in children. உமிக்கரி--உமிச்சாம்பல், s. Ricehusk, charcoal used for cleaning the teeth, polishing metals, &c. உமிக்காந்தல், s. A fire by ricehusks. உமிக்கூர்--உமிமூக்கு, s. The apex of rice chaff broken off, or several of them. உமிச்சட்டி, s. A vessel containing chaff in which fire is kept alive. உமிச்சிரங்கு, s. A superficial troublesome kind of itch. See நமைச் சிரங்கு. உமித்தவிடு, s. Bran mixed with fine or broken chaff given to cows, coarse bran. உமிநகம், s. Very thin nails. கூருமி, s. See உமிக்கூர். குற்றுமி, s. Broken husk. 76)

uruvu (p. 65) கிறேன், உருவினேன், வேன், உருவ, v. a. To unsheath, draw out of a case or sheath, வாள்முதலியவற்றையுருவ. 2. To draw between the finger and the thumb--as a hair, thread, straw, &c., to free it from oil, moisture, &c.; or a necklace, to remove the beads; or a tamarind twig, to remove the leaves, &c., தழைமுதலிய வுருவ. 3. To draw the hand with pressure down a limb, or any part of the body, to allay pain, inflammation, &c., also down a pole, or other cylindrical body, சுளுக்குமுதலி யவற்றிற்குஉருவ. 4. To loosen or tighten a noose, கயிற்றையுருவ. 5. To pierce through, penetrate, pass through, enter, or transfix, --as an arrow, a needle, &c., ஊடுருவ. உருவினவாளுடனேவந்தான். He came with a drawn sword. நெஞ்சிலம்புபட்டுருவிற்று. The arrow reached the heart and pierced it. மெல்லெனப்பாயுந்தண்ணீர்கல்லையுமுருவப்பாயும். To bore through, or into, as with an instrument, or as beetles and other insects. உருவத்தைக்க, inf. To stitch through. 2. To nail through, transfix. 3.
